What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Nicole

I would tell my younger self that I should take school more seriously. It is important to go to college right after High School because you have so much more time to figure out what you want to do for a career. I would also tell myself that instead of working numerous jobs and longing for something more you could save yourself the a whole lot of hardship. I would also state that it is important to be active with your piers in school. Join more sports teams and clubs. It gives you a sense of belonging and pride in you school. Plus it builds your confidence to feel apart of something. You never want to look back and say I wish I did this or that because that time is lost. Believe in yourself and push yourself. Your are smart and worth all the effort.

I would tell myself that I'm smarted than I thought and to apply myself more. Don't let the family tell you that you can't do it or that there are no funds. Enjoy life and don't let what happened in the past hold you down. Make mistakes, don't be afraid of what people think, and follow your dreams.

I would tell myself to take harder classes and push myself more. I personally in my senior year, had easy classes due to what I chose for classes and what I needed in order to graduate. On my first day of college in my English class, I learned that by the end of the semester, we had to have 45 journal entries and they could be about whatever and have 10,000 words in all, along with, 6 essays and a 12-15 page research project essay.

I would tell myself you can do it, look for a school that will help you succeed and is student oriented. Dont take anytime off and go staright to college even if you dont know what you are goung to major in. Attend part time or full time but just start and dont give up. If you stumble along the way get up and try again dont quit.

If I could turn back time to speak with myself as a high school senior about collage life, I would encourage myself to keep my goals in mind and stay motivated. I would tell myself that college is no walk in the park; if I hope to reach my goals then I have to want it, no one will do it for me. Although I have a vast network of people pulling for me to succeed none of them can do the work for me. I would tell myself: like life, collage presents many opportunities along the path of success however, along this path there are just as many if not more obstacles designed to challenge the strength of one's resolve. In life we are not defined by our accomplishments but by our resolve, the will power to overcome life's obstacles, and when one of those obstacles knocks you down the courage to get up, brush yourself off and tackle it again. Collage is no different you can never truly fail if you are willing to get up and try again. Overcoming obstacles is its own reward giving one the confidence to meet the next one head on.

The best advice I could give myself would be to simply forget everything high school has taught me about learning and the world in general. College is a different breed of animal. One that requires time and money management, dedication, hard work, and a desire to never give up. When everything seems like it's at it's worst scream back in defiance and push forward. Cause you started high school with a dream. A dream that was born from many days spent playing with Hot Wheels cars in the sand as a child. To open up your own automotive shop. To restore your 67 Chevy Caprice. To earn a life from something you are passionate about. The road will be full of obstacles both big and small, some of the best friends you could ask for and others you wish you hadn't ever met. One day if you work hard enough though you'll be able to look back at that kid in the sand and smile knowing that every second was worth the struggle. Don't let your dream die.

As a freshman in a college that was my last resort, if I could go back in time and talk to myself in high school I would tell me to get my crap together and put in the effort it takes to get great grades. If I had known that I would be stuck going to a community college I think I would have taken high school a lot more seriously. I would push myself to do the best I can because I am an intelligent person I just did not apply myself as well as I should have in high school. I would also tell myself that Eastern Maine Community College IS NOT as easy as everyone makes it out to be. Everyone thinks that it is an easy shortcut with no dificulty at all but it is just as challenging as some of the classes in our state univiersity.

stay focused in high school, choose a better group of people to hang out with, do not use alcohol or drugs

Being a GED recipient, I would go back to my high school senior self and tell myself not to worry about going to public school. It doesn't impact how well you will do in college, in fact you will do better in college knowing that you have something to prove to everyone who said you were royally screwing up when you ditched public school.
