I am going to be finishing my first year here at Elgin Community College and it really is a great place to start your college education. All my professors have been really helpful during class and during their office hours. ECC also has many great resources to help you succeed. Personally, I have found The Write Place to be helpful with my writing assignments. The atmosphere is great and there are many spots on campus to study.

Maryana - 04/08/2021

I think Elgin Community College is a great place to go to school. The professors are hands on and give a lot of time to the students, which is incredibly helpful when handling a pandemic. The atmosphere at a community college is familiar but unfamiliar. ECC is a great stepping stone for your future if university isn't where you want to go right away. ECC is comfortable and accepting, there isn't that fear of leaving everything behind because you quickly learn that people are helpful and fun to be around. The campus is so open that people always want to be at school even if it is just to talk to other people. This college opens doors that people don't always know about until they get there. Elgin Community College is a place to grow and learn.

Sam

Elgin Community College was a fantastic learning experience and college experience to start out as ECC provided me with a great education that was very affordable as well. Though I recently graduated in May 2018 and will be attending Loyola University in Chicago starting in January of 2020, ECC was the foundation that's helped me get to where I am and to where I want to be in my Computer Science and educational career. Thanks ECC!

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Learn as much as you can about internships. Get involved with clubs in high school so it is not such a shock in college. Speak to your teachers as much as possible, try to make them your references and try to get as much advice out of them as possible. Realize that in college you have to motivate yourself. Learn how to teach yourself material, and don't rely on the teacher to spoon-feed you difficult material. Try to work and go to school if possible. If you can do it, then you will be ready to work in college. If you can't do it, then you will know how to adapt so that you can do it in college. Build up your resume and work experience and try to learn a little bit about a lot of different subjects. Be open to new things, and make yourself try new things.

  3. Describe the students at your school.

My classmates seem to be in college for the status of saying that they went to college. They seem to have the same mentality as they did in High School. It seems like all they want to do is skate by with a passing grade and shudder at the thought of studying for tests or research papers. Some students come to school in pajamas and are late to class which is disrespectful to the teaching staff and their fellow students.

  4. What kind of person should attend this school?

Elgin Community College is a school for those with little resources or people not looking for the challenge of a 4-year school. It is also good for students who need to work on the basics a little more before continuing on. Community colleges are great for obtaining an associates degree or certification.

  5. Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

I only chose to attend this school because it is the community college in my area. I graduated early from high school in December 2014. Now I am attending community college in the spring and summer of 2015 in the hopes of completing 2 years of my bachelors degree before attending a four year university.

  6. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

How much classes and books are. This was something that I needed to be prepare for before attending ECC. It's less than university, but at the same time, it's a bit of a stretch moneywise.

  7. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

At my school, it is sometimes very difficult to get questions answered. Many of the departments are not responsive to students seeking help. I wish the faculty would have more patience with confused students, and instead of trying to answer their questions as quickly as possible, would attempt to answer questions to the best of their abilities.

  10. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The apathy among the student body is probably the most annoying thing about my school. So many students just don't care about their studies, friendships, or extra-curricular activities. Because it's a community college, most students don't take it seriously. For a student who actually does care about ttheir education, it's frustrating to be around this attitude. It's also difficult to push yourself to succeed. When you're able to look like a high-flying over-achiever in comparison without even trying, it's tough to remind yourself to actually work at your education.

  11. Describe your favorite campus traditions.

My school is best know for the opertunities it gives the community. My school allows traditional and non-traditional students to attend school and firther their education. Also the education that I recieve in my major is taught by instructors that have real life experiences. This has allowed me to go beyond the school and further my education into my major field.

  12. What's unique about your campus?

That it is very affordable. Many classes will transfer depending on the school the student is transfering to. Also, you are able to pick what classes you want and when you want to take them. You can have all morning classes or afternoon or evening. With these two things, it makes going to this school more relaxing and more stress free.

  13. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

The teachers are the same as at 4 year universities, so I get the same quality of education at Elgin Community College as any Illinois state school. Also the tuition is cheaper than any of the state schools and you are still getting quality enducation. The community college also has an agreement with state schools that allow credits to transfer. This is very beneficial because students can begin their education at a community college and save money to go to a 4 year school.

  14. What are the academics like at your school?

The academics at ECC are very diverse and have a lot of depth. So far my favorite class has definitely been botany, a class which ignited my interest in the world of plants and plant nutrition. My least favorite class so far has been General Chemistry I because, for whatever reason, the field and practice of chemistry is very challenging to me. I would say that most students at ECC value the education that they are getting and classes generally have a good deal of participation. The students are not terribly competitive at ECC, which is nice because there is an atmosphere of trust and fellowship between most students. My particular major is Environmental Law, and although ECC doesn't have a program for that directly, the school that I am planning to transfer to, NIU, does. I have spent a good deal of time with my botany professor and anthropology professor out of class and they are very unique people.

  15. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

I would say that the most active group at ECC is the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. There are frequent meetings and events planned and organized by Phi Theta Kappa on a weekly basis and the students generally respond well to these events. Another very popular student group is the Socrates Cafe, which delves into critical reasoning and fair argumentation.

  16. What is your overall opinion of this school?

I have really enjoyed my time at ECC so far. The campus is large and inviting, the faculty are very friendly and helpful, and the professors are very personable. The best thing about ECC is definitely the cost of tuition. Although, it is relatively cheap it does still put a strain on me financially though, which is why I am applying for scholarships. However, I cannot imagine getting a better headstart on my education than through ECC. When I tell people that I am attending ECC, they usually congratulate me because ECC is a widely recognized institution. As far as student complaints go, the only real complaints that I have been exposed to are that the parking lots are too small.

  17. What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

I really don't think that there is a single stereotype for students at ECC, but if I had to identify one I suppose I would say that some people think that students who attend ECC are lazy for not going straight to a four-year university. In general this stereotype is dead wrong and almost all students at ECC are hard-working and dedicated to pursuing their educations.
