Eureka College Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Lanie

I would tell myself that college is a whole new experience. The people there are not judging as the people are in high school. There is going to be a lot of opportunity to become involved, but you can get yourself in too deep and be involved too much. You need to be able to know how much you can handle and still do well in school. You are going to be exposed to many new things that you need to learn to adjust to. You have to work hard and stay focused so that you can keep yourself proud and on the right path .

I have been given all the tools to help me succeed at Eureka College. I have only been at the college for one year and I know I made the right decision. I have amazing friends and I know are going to be with me in hard times and easy times. I know Eureka has helped me grow in many different ways this year. One of the greatest things I love about Eureka, is that is a home. When I go home on break, it's great to see my family but I miss being at Eureka.

I would tell myself to relax and have more fun my freshmen year. I was very nervous about moving to a new state that I feel I missed out a little in my first semester here. I would also tell myself to make time to pick up that theater minor and to study abroad. These were two things that I wish I could have made time for, but it just didn't work out.

Greg

The most important thing I would say is to take things a little more serious. College isn't cheap and you don't want to spend the rest of your life paying off loans because you couldn't complete the required classes on time. I would also tell myself to have more fun. It's college. Go out and have a good time. Let loose every once in a while. No one knows you so this is the BEST time to make the impression that you want to make.

The main thing I would stress to myself about college is to do what you really want. It is a new place, you are going there to further your education, but also to grow as a person in society. I truly believe that by choosing Eureka College my life has changed for the better. Coming to college is a huge transition for all students, I had to remind myself that even though it can be stressful and I may become doubtful at times, the outcome is what I really want. Do not change your goals or aspirations to make it easier on yourself. If you come in with the mindset that college is going to be a great time and you are going to work your hardest to learn as much as you can, you will. A positive mindset is the best medicine for the transition from high school to college.

I think that parents should take a look at where their children will be living. Make sure it will be a safe school that will allow their children to go to class even at night without being afraid. For students, I would reccomend to stay on campus. Commuting to school is a fine thing to do but you really get to experience a whole new world of living when you stay on campus. When picking a school, I would suggest picking a school that is right for you and not what your parents think is a good place. You are the one who has to go to class everyday so you will need to be able to be comfortable with where you are going to school. No matter what you choose to do, try to be as involved as possible because you will regret it when it ends. College goes by awfully quickly. Don't be afraid and don't let anyone bring you down.

The advice I would give to parents and/or students about finding the right college and making the most of a the college experience, would be make sure the size of the school is something you really want. Smaller the school the closer bond you will have with the professors and students but not that very eventful. The bigger the school the more social opportunities you get to have but will fight harder to stand out, which can have pros and cons. College is going to be one of the most memorable moments in your life and you want to be in a place where you can experience those moments.

Bryce

GO to the place that you feel is right. You will know!

Ashley

I would suggest going and taking a tour of the colleges you are interested in. When I was on Eureka's campus and people were walking by you and saying hi even though they did not know you, thats when I knew this was where i needed to be!

Travis

Take time to explore what kind of person the individual is. If they are a low key, laid back, individual then those are the qualities they need to look for in a school. When a person goes to buy shoes they dont just try one size or style, they explore the different qualities in which makes it fit best and other times price and style are considered as well. Search and explore different places to decide what is right for you and make sure you get exactly what you want to achieve out of your college career. Try and find the place that is going to make you, the best that you can be so you walk away from college with a degree and a great expirience!

The advice I would give to parents is rather simple. That is simply do not push your children into making a decision about the school you think is the best, but this doesn?t mean that you shouldn?t voice your opinion. I think that the parents should help weigh that pros and cons of the schools. To the Students I simply would tell them to pick a school where you feel comfortable. Every college is different and offers you a different experience! Visit as may schools as you can before you make a decision and choose one because you like it not because your parents, friends, or significant other attends or thinks you should attend.

Erica

The best advice I would give to students is weigh your options. Visit the school to see which one best fits you and your major. Make sure the community is friendly and willing to help.

Bryce

Strectch your self. Make new friends. Step out of your comfort zone, and try somehting new

In order to find the right college fit and make the most of the college expereince, parents and students should spend time visiting college campuses and researching those that could be used to enhance the emotional, spiritual, and intellectual qualities of the student. College should be used as a time to grow as a person, discover whom one is, and become a culturally aware, responsible citizen who is prepared for a career in the "real" world. In order to accomplish such feats, students should dive into their college experience with set goals and a sense of spontaneity, which will allow them to thrive academically and socially. Finding the right college comes with an understanding of which atmospheres feel most like home and which campuses can accompany the family atmosphere students desire. The college experience is yours for the taking--make the most of such precious years! Grow into the person you want to become and allow your experience to shape you. After all, you get to choose the person you will become!
