What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Nicolas

Do not do homeschooling! You can make it through the trials. Homeschooling will not give you the education or opportunities you need to prepare for college.

Jason

If I could go back and talk to myself in High School I would tell myself to work harder on the education and talk colege courses that are available and I would also tell myself to go straight to college out of High School so I wouldn't be older and have a family and then go back to school it is to hard to wait SO do school when you are young so there is no regrets

Zachary

Knowing what I know now about college life and making the transition from high school, there are a couple of things that I would advise myself regarding. One of the biggest pieces of advice I would give to my high school self would be to not procrastinate in school and in studying for test. The principle of being disciplined and learning to learn is critical in having the best educational experience possible. Practically, your high school GPA, your ACT score and other key academic factors play a big role in your financial aid status, as well as determining what kind of colleges you can get into. Basically, academic scores and study habits play a vital role in your overall college experience. I would say to myself to not wait until the last minute to prepare for college, begin immediately to develop good study habits, prepare adequately for test, and do your best where you are currently at!

Joseph

I would advise myself to go as far as I can go and make a difference in everything I am apart of and don’t let anyone take your dream away. I would tell myself that you must seek for help, when you need it and don’t let pride take you over and make you not make it to the end of the road where living and glory to your King will come from your life. I would tell myself don’t let yourself get closed inside of yourself if you need to talk call someone or talk to someone who is a close friend you have made because you don’t want to get trapped in your mind of thoughts. Lastly, always shoot for the best grades you can get and don’t lose interest in doing your best even with subjects you don’t like. Also, make sure you really want to start a school where you think you want to go and look at your personality before you really decide. Never close yourself out of the real world because you feel love doesn’t want you because of fear of rejection.

Abbi

The transition from high school to college is one of the most difficult and exciting transitions of your life. You'll be delighted, social, overloaded, home-sick, driven, terrified, eager, nervous, involved, exhausted, and overwhelmed all in your first few months of your college experience. There will be days where you feel like you're living the dream and other days where you're scared and ready to pack your bags and head home. My advice would be to always keep your priorities in line. When you're feeling like you're ready to give up, remember why you're there. You're learning so that you can one day go out into the world and make a difference. Never let feelings of inadequacy and fear hold you back. You are fully capapble of succeeding, and you will thrive. You'll make friendships of a lifetime, and you'll learn more about life, the world, and yourself than you ever thought possible. Always keep your eyes on God, and remember that you are smarter and stronger than you think. Don't be afraid of change or new experiences. Be adventurous, work harder than you ever have, and conquer this challenge.

Alexis

There are many things that I would do differently if I were to do it all again. I would definitely learn to read ahead and study before you go to class in order to ask appropriate questions while the teacher is advising in the classroom. I would also look online for different ways to learn a particular subject in the event the teacher does not teach to my learning needs. Another important aspect of High School is to focus on practical situations where you would really use the knowledge. Any time you have a practical application of knowledge you will remember it more easily. If there is a subject that is not your favorite, put extra time into because it may be you learn differently and could love that subject if you truly understood it as others do. Everyone is different and each has their own strengths. Know your own strengths and weaknesses so you can get help in areas you may need and help others in areas in which you excel. Push aside competition and help others because a future boss will want a team player.

Rebekah

Learn how to priortize now while it's still easy. If you can begin to manage your time wisely in high school, managing your time in college will be ten times easier! Priorities and time management are the keys to enjoying college life. Make sure you get your work done. If you cannot complete your highschool work, your college work will be much harder than it needs to be. Get your work done early so you don't have to worry about it later! Have a solid set of goals. Know what you want to accomplish and then accomplish it! You don't have to settle for the average performance or achievement. But your dreams will only become reality if you make them. So work hard and dream big! You can do it! You just have to put your mind to it and your effort into it. Go get 'em, kid!

Jillian

Well high school self, I would just tell you to not give up any hope. You need to know that it is okay to move on from friends you had in high school, and it's okay to look towards a brighter future. Following your dream and the path God wants you to take will help you soar great heights. Things will come and after you graduate you will meet so many wonderful people. Don't be anxious about finding the one--he comes in very soon after you transfer. Focus on work and love life right now. Live each day step by step like you always have!

Ashley

To the girl who will start college in just a few short months: don't be afraid to fall in love. Fall in love with new people. Fall in love with your studies. Fall in love with adventures. High school friends and memories are great but the only way to truly love college is to let go and be ready to meet new friends and make new memories. You've always been one to take academics seriously, but know you really do need to study. Put your whole heart in all you do. The only way you will be succesful is to live passionately. Keep vibrancy in your friendships and a passion for what you are learning. Don't be afraid to try new things and step out of your comfort zone. True growth comes from stepping out of your box. Laugh often, love deeply, live boldy. Don't forget what you're passionate about.

Brittany

I would tell myself that going to community college seems like a great idea, but I should just go to Evangel right away. By going to Evangel right away, I would graduate on time. If I went to Evangel right away, then I would be able to find a job that I could come back to every year instead of struggling to find one with the short amount of time I have left. Going to Evangel right away would have been a smarter move to begin with!

susana

I will work on my study skills and seek help more. i will also take placement tests ahead of time. i will plan my classes better and try to get advice from people who currently attend the school.

KingeAnn

If I could go back I would tell myself to be prepared for the amount of work in college. To start saving money and that its going to be easy. I would tell myself to be willing to go out of their comfort zone and make new friends and explore different oppertunities

Hortensia

I would share with myself, not to waste time just having fun or relaxing from school. This is the time to make use of the education opportunities. Why? when you are young, it comes easier to retain and apply. Also not to take for granted the assistance that is given. College is the time for adventure and investigation because it is so much to gain. When you get it, be serious, you will see the payoff in the end. Find something that you are interested in and stick with it. Do not allow others to sway you on your decision or direction you want to go in. College is fun and it is difficult at times, however the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it and see the benefits when it is applied. Share with her the things I am learning and how I'm going to use them. I'll share about our discussions online and the interaction I have with the instructors. Speak on things I know have been a question in our mind. Help her see the excitement that doesn't have to be put on hold. We never stop learning.

Megan

You will experience a lot through college. Some of what will happen will be good, but some will be very bad. You have a tendancy to keep your thoughts to yourself and obsess over frienships too much. Broaden your horizens. Socialize more. Do NOT let what dad says get to your head. You are a strong girl. Your boyfriend is what saves you in two years, because throughout the crazy transition, you're going to hit a hard low. You will be depressed. Do NOT let this stuff get to you -- to me. And PLEASE, for the love of God, search up as many scholarships and grants as you can before school starts. If you do not, you will regret it. College is a big place, Megan. A very big place, and an even bigger change. Just because you will be away from family and friends never means you can recluse. This school wants the best for you--for us. But you just have to let it in. If not, you will get hurt, and cause unnecessary stress. Trust me, it is ridiculous. (p.s.- Hobby Lobby is a great place to work, but don't do it.)

laurie

I would tell myself to focus on my school work and soak in everything I possibility can. I would remind myself that I am fortunate to have free education and to take advantage of this privilege.

Amanda

"The past is gone, the future is a mystery, but today is a gift." These words were spoken by my elders throughout my whole life. Although, all I wanted to do was rush to college in order to finally start my life. I was involved in many things throughout highschool, but mentally I was not there. Ultimately, I graduated without any attachment to my hometown. The ability to have memories and friends to come back home to is a blessing, not a hendrance. The transition to college was easy for me as I expected. However, I was the only one who had no desire to go home, not even an ounce of homesickness. Therefore, my advice to myself in high school is to genuinely live in the present. Take a hold of the gift of today, make close friendships that you will miss and those which you can have memories of later. If you do not make those friendships and memories, it is as if that chapter in life was wasted. Moreover, do not waste the gift of today for it is precious, and one day you will desire the memories which only experience can bring.

TuaShannon

Hey im Tua Shannon Sherrod. I know a little bit about college. In order to do will you have to put time in to study your work. You cant be shy to ask the teacher a question or if you need help. If you need help stay after school talk to the teacher get with a freind, are help by some at school. When you have a test study for it. In also know how to ready in college because you will need it. You read everything about colege. Me I have trouble with reading in im not to tell people because they will help you out in anyway the can. So read, read, read!!!!!

Joylynn

College is a great place to make friends; all you have to do is put yourself out there. Keep your door open, study in a quiet yet public place such as the dorm lobby or the library, and talk to the people sitting around you in class. Just don't hide in your room all day. All those AP courses and dual credit courses are definitely worth doing the extra work in high school and will save you time and money in college. Set rules and guidelines for yourself to manage time. For example, don't get on social media until all your classes are done for the day, set aside time to do homework for each class. Do afternoon classes' homework between or before morning classes to leave extra time after classes for other activities. No, you don't need to jump into a relationship right away. Get to know people as friends first so you're not wasting your time on dating someone you will break up with anyway. Enjoy the friendships first. Learn, experience, and do new things as often as you can. It's worth it.

Charley

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I wouold tell myself so many things. First, I would tell myself to apply for more scholarships and put in more hours at work. Second, I would tell myself to try and be more open to new people and new things when I first move into campus. I would also say to not try and latch onto the first people that I meet because there are so many people to meet and I do not have to be best friends with all of them. Lastly, I would tell myself to develop better time management and study skills. It would have been much better to start the school year off with these skills instead of developing them throughout my first semester at Evangel.

Brittany

College can be very expensive. I would tell myself to learn to make a budget and really think about if I really need something. Yes, go out and have fun with friends, but make sure to have money saved to pay for school and emergencies. I would also tell my self to not be afraid. Step out and meet new people. Yes, I am shy, but after several years of college I finally just stepped out and made some wonderful friends. I love my friends oh so very much! One more thing I would tell myself would be to be organized. Set a time for homework and a time for hanging out with friends. Procrastination isn't the best to be practicing all the time. Here and there its not so bad, but it can be very stressful, which isnt good for anyone! Just have fun, but be responsible at the same time.

Amanda

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a highschool senior, I would give myself the advice of making a schedule that allows for plenty of study time. I was a homeschooled highschooler and much of my time was spent unscheduled and playing the piano or singing. One of the hardest transitions I had to face upon arriving on campus was scheduling my time so that it allowed for studying. I was noticing during the first three weeks of being on campus my grades were slowly dropping, and I was slowly beginning to not study. After brainstorming my problem of nearly failing classes, I discovered several outcomes. One that seemed to work the best for me was to by a calender that I have hung on my wall, a planner I carry with me, and a stopwatch. I know schedule out how long I need to spend on a subject, and I now choose to study instead of always hanging out with my friends. I would like to tell my highschool self to make a schedule that allows time for studying, because I believe if it was already a habit my transition would have been easier.

Kaitlin

Listen to your parents. You may not think that they know anything right now, but they have most of the beneficial information. When you get out of high school, jumping into a two year school is something to be highly considered. You are already in the mindset of learning, that will not get easier with time. It will cost you both time and money. Those may not be important to you right now, the future should always be considered. You can attend a community college for less money, and even take part time classes while you work along side of that. You always need a back up, you need plan b. The last thing that you want to do is find yourself stuck in a dead end job for the rest of your eternity. You need challange and to be able to fine tune your craft, be sure to keep those things state of the art. Knowing you, if you don't you will never truely be happy.

michelle

honestly i would just tell myself to culm down. when i was in high school i thought i was going to be lost in college. i thought i would be lost without all the peolple i new, in a new bilding, with a new atmostphere, but i was not. the transition from high school to college was not a transition at all. it was like any other thing i have ever done. knowing all this know whould have helped my past self from worthless worry.

Tina

Enjoy every moment of this time. Life gets harder from here on out- so let yourself enjoy these times. At the same time study hard and keep doing your work. Getting a good grade is so much more fufilling then you can understand. Advenutre out a little bit, take every oppurtunity for adventure. (Live in the moment, don't just take pictures of it!) It all seems chessey to say, but this is really how life should be. Appreciate everything you can. Life throws a lot at you, but nothing more then you can handle!

Kristin

Lets be clear, since you already know the direction you want to head in, do not doubt yourself. Your career path is a road less traveled but it is your passion and dream. Your direction is set and clear, there are many ways to get there but your dreams are tangible. They are not abstract or impractical. If you want to do something you love doing, do not let anyone stop you. Confidence is key, even if you do not know where you are going. This University you are headed into will equip you with knowledge and integrity. Dreams require sacrifice, hardwork, and faith. Sacrifice in your time and energy, hardwork inside and outside of school, and faith in yourself that you can do this and in the end you will have no regrets. Keep your life simple and focused. Give college your all because it is only four years of the seventy plus years you will live. College life is going to be amazing if you allow yourself to enjoy it.

Joseph

In all honesty, I hated all of high school. Even though I hated high school, I wouldn't change anything about my senior year because without it I wouldn't appreciate my college experience as much. I never have enjoyed school as much as I do at Evangel University. The advice I would give myself for my senior year would simply be, "hang in there and don't worry about the next step."

Kate

I would advice myself to have more confidence. I was very insecure when I was younger and constantly felt as if I didn't measure up socially, professionally and physically. I felt as though I would never succeed in anything in life and was constantly worried that I wouldn't succeed in life. Looking back on it now, I realize that life cannot be measured in years, but only on a day to day basis and sometimes only in minutes. Worrying and stressing about years down the road will only empty today of it's strength. The key is just to take things one moment at a time and realize that everything falls into place. The things in life that work out are meant to be and those that dont you will always learn to live without. I would tell myself to relax, live each day as if it were my last and know that amazing thing are bound to happen in my future.

Darius

Transitioning from high school to college is hard because you no longer have someone telling you what to do. College is not about going to parties all the time but it is about finding out who you are and learning how to be responsible. The best advice is to never procrastinate because when you get projects and studying done early your grades will improve from it. Learn how to manage your social life and your studies because college is too expensive to be messing around and ending up with low grades that are going to be meaningless. You need to go to your classes all of the time and actually pay attention. Take good and eligible notes that you can study from and use when you need to. The most important advice I can give to you is to be yourself, don't give in to peer pressure and don't let anyone change who you are. You know that you were always about getting good grades and putting education first. Don't let anyone or anything change that. You got this, you can succeed and I know that you will become the person that you always wanted to be.

Alexis

I would advise myself to go to Colorado State University instead. Evangel is not what I thought it would be and I wish I had known that earlier.

Chelsie

If I could go back and talk to my high school me the advice I would give is that everyone is going through the same thing as freshmen. Am I going to get along with my roommate? Will I make any friends? Will I pass my classes? Will I LIKE my classes? Will the professors be tough? Will I like it here? Is this REALLY the right school for me? Whatever the answer is to any of those questions it doesn't matter. You're there. Be you. Go out for the intermural sports. Join clubs. Volunteer every opportunity you get. Talk to strangers. Make friends. Be a better you. There are tons of people, don't make time for those who don't treat you well or make you feel less than you are. If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask. Don't be afraid to try something new. Chances are you'll make new friends and have memories that last a life time. Make the best of your situation but don't take anything for granted. You are you and no one can take that away from you so embrace it and love yourself.

Bethany

I would advise myself to stay in my studies more. A social life is much needed but only okay as long as its not interrupting my studies.

Alexander

No one can change the past, but what you do will affect your future, and the future of those around you as well. Trust your gut and the guidance of those around you. Don't be afraid. Meet people and you will make friends. Stop knowing and not doing. DO!

Christer

I would have told myself to work harder in the class room in my AP classes. I also would have told myself to start saving for college while in school.

Molly

There are so many different ways to gain knowledge and to learn don't ever limit yourself. At times you might feel defeated maybe because of money, grades or who knows what but that is never an excuse to stop trying your hardest. By holding even just these few things in mind and moving forward in pursuing whatever education it might be that you want you will never regret learning. Remember if you have questions and don't understand somehting you are not the only one. So get out there and have no regrets about learning and taking the courageous steps in getting there.

Elizabeth

Having strong academics is definitely important, but after two terms sit down and really think about which classes are making you happy and which ones are not. Just because you are good at something does not mean you have to major in it and interest is not as good as passion when deciding a career. Have some confidence in yourself and your abilities and do not pass up oppurtunities to learn more about yourself and what you really want out of life.

Joyce

I would tell myself work a little harder and get your GPA better than what it is, apply for as many scholarships as you can because you'll definitely need them and don't slack off.

Whitney

Most importantly, I would begin by telling myself to slow down. Life is not a race so stop living in the future and running on auto pilot during the present. As cliché as it sounds, you have to start living as the person that you already are and not who someone else wants you to be. I would tell myself that I will not feel whole again until I return to knowing and living for God as I had been the previous years before my senior year. Lastly, I would look myself straight in the eyes and let me know that I am loved and have much to offer the world.

Elizabeth

If I could go back and talk to the Elizabeth as a senior, I’d tell myself to not be afraid to get involved. Getting involved is crucial in order to make the most out of college. Being far away from home, it’s easy to get home-sick. I learned the more involved I am, the less I’m able to focus on my homesickness. Another thing I’d tell myself is to not rush into a relationship once I get to school. Relationships can be a distraction when you’re in a new area with new people. I was overwhelmed when I first got to campus and rushed into a relationship to take away the pain I felt of feeling alone. When I was in my relationship, I loved it because I wasn’t focused on the stress of school. However, when the relationship ended, I had nobody because all my time previously was focused on the relationship. The absolute best advice I’d tell myself is to get involved and to not rush into relationships. Wait a semester to date because if you don’t, you’re going to realize how much you missed out on.

Britni

USE TIME MANAGEMENT. Oh my goodness, I can not stress this enough. As a high school student, I was able to slide through with really good grades and never put much effort into anything. That really got the best of me when I got to college. I didn't manage my time well, and when it came to my first test, I got my first C. It was a very eye opening experience for me. After that, I realized I never wanted to get such a bad grade again. College requires so much more studying and effort. Time management is key! My best friend since being in college in my planner. So, get a planner and start learning how to manage your time wisely before you go to college, because it will put you a step ahead of others who don't realize the importance of this.

Thania

To take your classes more seriously. You only have a certain amount of time to get things done and there is no time to full around. You have to know how to manage your time with your friends and with school work. You can have fun, but know that sometimes fun is not the option. This is your future that you are working towards and you need to buckle down and get serious because sometimes second chances is not an option. Friendships last for a lifetime, but know how to pick your closest friends because the friends you make in college are the friends you have in life. College is not a place to just have fun and be independent, its a place to be focused and responsible because your future depends on how you do in college. Make friends with your proffesors because you never know if you need them for a job reference.

Benjamin

The first thing I would warn myself of is that NC State wont accept your application for the spring semester so you should try and apply for the fall and try applying to ECU or anywhere else at least for one semester. Second I would warn myself that the community college that I attend doesn't accept stafford loans so save up as much as you can to help pay for the semester. Finally I would tell myself that you can go through another semester away from your girlfriend, she will come see you and will help pay to get you to NC State so that both of you can spend time with one another. I would then tell myself that I don't need really nice things to be happy, all it takes is a little time and great friends and you will have all the happiness the world can offer you.

Ryan

I would tell myself that Evangel University is the perfect college for me to attend. With its positive atmosphere of great professors and student body, it is the perfect place for me. They push for you to strive in excellence at everything you do. They center themselves around the good news of Christ which gives this positive atmosphere even more reason to be positive. I have already met people who will be life-long friends. Also, I met the girl of my dreams whom I am marrying on July 26, 2013 while attending this college. Therefore, this decision of Evangel University was one definitely made right and I would never change.

Dominique

I would tell myself to do the best I can with what I have. i could have applied for more scholorships, increased my grades, or done harder in the areas where I thought I was weak. However, the main thing I would say to my senior self, things are going to be okay. Always, always keep God first.

Luke

If I could go back in time to my high school self I would tell myself to not be so narrow minded about my beliefs, opinions, and people I surround myself with. College is about sponging up knowledge, culture, and different types of friends as possible and for the first year or so I surrounded myself with items already in my comfort zone. attending such a culturally diverse, liberal arts focused university has shown me all the incredible features that something different than what i am used to can offer. I know the old saying states that, "ignorance is bliss," but that is a copout! Evangel university has showed me the value of accepting every kind of orientation, culture, belief, background, and all kinds of people. we are all here with goals and dreams so why not help each other achieve those without barriers being erected because of narrow minded viewpoints.

Kaitlyn

If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to start studying harder. School was always easy for me, so when I got to college, I was really lacking study-skills. Teaching myself how to study was one of the most difficult things about transitioning into college life. I would also let myself know that everything is going to work out alright. My senior year I was full of anxiety over picking a school and what it would be like to move away from home. I would like to save myself the stress and give myself more peace of mind.

Rachel

Get involved, even during your first year at college. There are so many things to experience, and the more you become involved, the more connected you will feel to community. Balance is crucial. Do not take on so many involvements that you miss the beauty of the moment. College life is not about the number of activities you are involved in but the relationships and experiences that shape you.

Shelby

If I could go back in time to give myself advice, I believe I would advise myself to not be afraid to push my involvement and goals to a higher level. I have always been afraid of not being good enough, but that has held me back from pursuing opportunities that could have given me valuable experience for my future career. I also would have advised myself to start living on campus for my freshman year instead of commuting to save money. I finally moved in the campus dorms my junior year, and I have already made more close friends than my first two years of college. Saving money is not worth the lifetime friendships you will make, and commuting can make it difficult to be involved in school activities and special events. Ultimately, I would advise to jump in, and enjoy these last four years of schooling before venturing completely out on my own, which I feel is advice I am already taking.

Vincent

To concentrate more on the studying and work aspect of my schooling and less on the extracurricular activities. Mant of them can be helpful but they can distract from the true goal and prize to be found in the ability to study.

osavbie

I would have adviced myself to have spend more time studying my books, because some of the classes i took this last semeter reflect most on having a background knoweledge of things i had in high school, but them i took my study for granted. I would have also adviced myself to work with friends who have a set goal in life.

Alicia

Dear Alicia Marie, I could tell you everything that you're going to do in life, but I would never want to re-write your entire past because that is what makes you into the beautiful and talented woman you will be. Although, there are a few things I'd like you to know in order to save you some hassle down the road. You're not going to go to UCA to be with that one guy either. The Lord has a BETTER university for you to attend where you will meet friends who invest POSITIVELY into your life. In order to help yourself in the future, you must help yourself now. STUDY! STUDY! STUDY! Those three words will be something that you REALLY have to work at when you get to college, so LEARN NOW! Most of all, always cherish yourself! You are beautiful (inside and out). Sweet Alicia, just always remember that the Lord is there even when it feels like you're all alone in this world. He WILL see you through. Let him be the lamp unto your feet and the light unto your path and EVERYTHING will be OK because HE is in control.
