Evergreen Valley College Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Andrea

It is not as daunting as you might think. It is nothing like high school, unless there are high school students in your class. Online courses are the best ever! I know you never went to mainstream school. College can be done your way, whatever you may decide that is. It is really pretty easy.

If I were to go back in time, and had the opportunity to tell myself one thing while I was still in college. Would be to work hard. In High school I wasn't the best worker. I was smart yes, but I never actually put myself to work until now. I believe I could have gotten into a university if I worked hard back in High school. I wish I didnt waste my time slacking off while in High school. All of those opportunities have been wasted. And No going to community college isn't exactly bad. But in order to get the opportunities I had before. I will have to work twice as hard. So I would tell myself now. Don't waste your time. Do your best and strive for the best. Never give up when times look tough. Everyone will pay off in the end.

There are many things I wish I knew back in high school. A sense of fashion would have helped me achieve a higher social standing, but to be honest, I really wish I wasn't so hard on myself. In high school, I felt that joining numerous clubs, volunteering to several organizations, and taking advanced classes, would get me into a good college, which would ultimately decide whether I would be successful or not. In college, I have discovered the responsibilities of having a job while attending school full time, paying the bills, doing the laundry, running errands, etc., and at the same time, trying to figure out what I would want to accomplish out of my life, and what I have to offer to the world. I never really went out to hang with my friends, or attend the school dances. My advice to high school self would be to just let loose once in a while, take advantage of the responsibilities I don't have, and enjoy the companionship of my friends. High school is just the threshold to the real world. Work hard, but enjoy it as well.

If I could go back in time I wouldn't tell myself to do anything different as far as transitioning goes. The transition wasn't the hard part for me. If I had to give myself advice it would be to do more research about different majors and different classes and things of that nature. Although I have enjoyed my experience at the school I am currently attending there are a couple of other schools that offer more classes in my major. Although I wasn't sure what major I was going to have back in high school I still wish I would have done more detailed research, because it was not until this past semester that I came across other local schools that have better programs for my major.

For all of you who are going to be attending college for the first time, I would like to advise you all to be very focus on yourself. This means, take it slow at first. Figure out what you can handle and what you can't. If you are going to be a full time student try not to have many hours at work. Make sure you are going to be eating healthy. Your eating is going to help you concentrate more on school. You will have energy and your goodnight rest too. Have enough time for studying and homework. Dont be out too late. Try and find a tutor if you are having trouble in your classes. Be very communicative in college. Its the key to help you get what you need to help you succeed. I was foster youth so I had to be communicating with a lot of counselors so they would understand my needs. There is always going to be somewhere out there that is willing ot help. Don't be afraid to ask your professors for help or any questions. Communicate with your proffesors. Be very cooperative in class and do all homework. good luck!

I would tell myself to make the decisions that I plan on making, that I don't need to go to an University right at this minute. That I need to save my money and focus on my goals, and my major. Be ready to learn different monolgues, and Literary genre. Try harder to look for scholarships, grants, anything that can help you get money for school. But most of all I would tell myself that, I will be fine in the future, I will make it to become an actress. That with me choosing to go to Evergreen Valley College I can learn a lot from my teachers. They can show so much I never thought I would learn within the years I've been there. Also by the time I want to apply to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts I will be prepared, confident, and ready.

Dear High School Senior Amber, Take this as a warning to your future; be prepared! College is not the easiest thing to get through. For one, there will be money problems. There will also be relationships that are meant to last, and some that are not. You will discover classes you will fancy, and some you will definetly not (english), but you have to endure. Truthfully, it's going to be difficult to understand, but do not worry, everything will be fine. You will feel overwhelmed at first; trying to figure out what you are going to do with your life, and what classes to take, but you just have to be patient and focused on your goal. Breathe in the college life and experience it while you can because you never know if you will have a second chance. So the advice that I really have for you is, be patient and open-minded (especially about english), stay strong, keep your focus and look forward to your future. You can get through it. Love Always and Forever, The Older more Grown-up Amber

Don't stress yourself so much about the transfer from high school to college. You're a good student and you'll do great when you get there! Just take the time while your in high school to deepen friendships, play sports, and spend time with family, because you won't have time for that later, and your friends will all be going to different colleges. I'd also work on your self-confidence, if I were you. You will be getting a job in sales in about a year, and you'll need all the confidence you can get to do well at the job.

If i had the opportunity to go back in time and talk to myself my senior year in high school, and give myself a worthy advice, I would tell myself to be responsible and independent. The world in college doesn't run by everyones schedule it runs on your own schedule. I tell myself to be responsible because i have to keep track of the dates and times certain classes are. There is no parents that should be involved of the bussiness that you have to take care of in college. The teachers will not go the extra mile to remind you to turn in your hw or aware you of the due dates. It's a huge transition from childhood to adulthood. It's the time when you start to become independent. Working and making your own money to pay for your lunch, books, and gas money. When you are sick you make your own doctor appointments. Most importantly to speak up for yourself because if you dont then you will get run over by everyone. These are two major preperations for college that will also help prepare you for life.

Stay focused, work towards achieving your educational goals, and never procrastinate. These are just a few tips I would not only give myself as a high school senior but to any other student that is about to embark upon their first year in college. As a sophomore in college transitioning into a 4-year university I have learned alot of skills that have kept me on track for the past 2 years. One tip I would give myself is to set your goals before entering college. It is very important to be aware of what you are getting yourself into. Another tip I would give myself is to stay focused and avoid anything that will deter you from reaching your goals. College life isn't only about working and studying but is also an opportunity to meet new people and enjoy the freedoms of exploring a new life. It can be very easy to be put off track but as long as you stay focused and keep your mind on your goals you will achieve them. Follow these simple tips and you will not only achieve your biggest goal in life but will also have a successful college experience.

If i could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior, i would say: Go to college, straight from high school. I would say dont wait so long to go back because it gets harder with time. I didnt go back till i was 23 and it has been harder then normal. It is very do able though. Im proud of my progress.
