Before coming to Famu; I wish I know the seriousness of waking up for classes on time, the true responsibilities of maintaining a high GPA, and the negative influences that lurk among the campus. For those new students getting ready to attend any university; I strong recommend that you focus on your GPA because once you mess up the freshmen semester it is great difficulty to raise that GPA. My GPA is not as bad as many others, but ut did drop when I came here. Also, be careful with the partying. Their tempting trust!

Before I came to this school, I wish I would have known about all the temptations, the many opportunities available for students, and that having faith in you is what really matters when things get hard. The temptations on campus that stopped me from doing what I was really suppose to do, like set Fridays. The many opportunities available on campus, we could receive by visiting SGA, reading the school newspapers or visiting the career center. I wish I would have realized how hard it really is to afford to pay for college. I have recently had to take a semester off from scholl because of financial issues. Only one of my parents can contribute to paying for my education and what my financial aid does not cover my mother has to pick up. When I was in high school I did not grasp the fact that going to college was so expensive and always thought finding a scholarship would come easily.

Before I came to college I really did not understand what my teachers meant when they would say "College isnt the same as high school," but now I do. College life is different from being in high school, yes I have more freedom, but with freedom comes responsiblities. I had to increase my study habits, time management skills, and become a lot more independent, aIthough it built survival skills, I should have taken it more serious. I know now that college is serious and it is a portal between trying to become an adult and actually becoming an adult.

The level of caring that the professors have for students. They really want to see students succeed so they help you as much as they can. They don't baby students so you have to work for your grade but if you put forth an honest effort they meet you at your level and help to to reach the expectations of the department they represent and the university as a whole. The amount of reading, studying and papers that you write in college is far more different and difficult. It's not impossible it's just alot of determination and effort.

I should have known that the financial aid office on my campus does a bad job of getting money to students. I wish I would have had a better understanding of money management before I set foot on FAMU's campus. I came to college from a fairly poor family so my budget was not very large. I mismanaged my funds and before the first month was over I was calling my mother for food money. I think that school should put in a finance class into high school senior curriculum so that they can be better prepared to take on the task of handling funds for survival.

Gregory

That the school wasn't very helpful.

I wish I had known about how much their out-of-state tuition was and how horrible they are toward us with financial aid issues. Out-of-state students pay over $545 per credit hour compare to $105 per credit hour for in-state students. In-state students recieve more financial aid awards than out-of-state who may have a better GPA standing as well as a more financial need.
