What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

Sidra

The stereotypes at my school are the typical stereotypes on any college campus. It includes fraternity guys (who are really good looking and love flirting with girls), sorority girls (who are really loud and preppy), stoners (who get high to study for a test), and Student Government students (who are really involved and friendly). There is a great diversity of students at FAU. You'll find many different backgorunds and Nationalities.

Florida Atlantic University has a reputation for having for having very stuck up people that attend, and at first glance this may seem true as well. However, once you get to know the students in your classroom, you will find that this is a misnomer. Many of the students are friendly, polite, and willing to help if you are having trouble understanding what the teacher is saying.

There are also people who are sometimes classified as FOBs (Fresh Off the Boat). This is a common term in South Indian/Pakistani/Bengali community, used to describe people who commonly speak their native tongue with their peers and are usually not in tune with the latest fashions and styles.

Florida Atlantic University is known for having diversity within the students. A big percentage of students are commuters, therefore, the stereotype of students at FAU are students who focus on school while managing full/part time jobs, husbands, children, family, and saving money by staying home with their families. There are all kinds of different types of students, and Florida Atlantic University has them all.

One stereotype of students at FAU is that they settled for coming here instead of another University because they couldn't get into the ones they wanted, jokingly referred to as Find Another University. This is not true, while a very small population may have had nowhere else to go, I can confidently say that nobody is stuck here. All of us want to be here, and are glad we made it into this school.

From all over Florida, the FAU stereotype seems to be that all FAU students are rich and that most are Jewish. This however, is completely false. Along with every university, FAU does not discriminate based on nationality, religion, or social status. FAU is in fact, an extremely multicultural university where students come from all over the US. Everyone is welcome at FAU and students come to FAU because they want to be a part of such an endearing and friendly university atmosphere.

Our students are very diverse. All of our student groups demonstrate many cultural interests including various religious groups, an outstanding LGBTQA resource center, and many different cliques ranging from typical jocks to intellectual students that discuss contemporary sociological theories. We have many fraternities and sororities as well that include students of many different backgrounds.

For FAU, the stereotype would be everyone attending is rich. The main campus is located in Boca Raton which is a fairly higher income area. However, many of the students are just like everyone else that has been hit in this economic situation. Many students' go to school, get an education, and make friends. Though the good thing about FAU is that their different campuses are driving distances for the most part. For example, I go to the main campus and their Davie campus; so you can definitely tell many of these students have jobs in the area and majority of them drive and make the same amount as you. In fact most of the time, students are in school just to get a degree and get a better job.

The stereotype is that students at FAU do not want to spend so much time on doing one thing; that they are not so motivated to go above and beyond. This is true for some of the students at FAU but by no means does this apply to the majority of the students at FAU. The student body is super competitive and is willing to do anything to make a great impression.

Geeks, at the Honors College. Slackers at the Boca Campus. This is not a n accurate portrayal. While there is a "nerd" culture at at the Jupiter campus, that does not mean that the Boca campus is trying any less. People also think of FAU as a safety school in the local area- but admissions are harder than some other big name state schools- and the GPA/test scores have been raised in recent years.

Michael

Although FAU has its share of party kids, I would say this stereotype is very incorrect. The students are very motivated to learn and although we study a lot, we also know how to have a good time.

Honestly, the most prevalent stereotype at FAU in the Boca Raton Campus is the rich prep. Boca Raton is a nice area, and people have the assumption that people who go to FAU must be a rich preppy student. This depends on who you hang out with. When you first start in your freshman year, you will see a lot of that type of student. However, once you go for a year or two and step into your more advanced courses, those students are for the most part no where to be found.

I would not say that stereotypes play a big role in the lives of students on FAU's campus. Yes, there are jocks, but FAU is not a highly sought out school for sports (yet). Yes, there are a lot of fraternities/sororities, but FAU does not have Greek housing, so the typical frat boy stereotype is not as prevalent on this campus. Yes, there are stoners, geeks, gays/lesbians, religious people, and every other typical stereotype a person could think of. It is not the groups that define FAU, but the individuals that go here. Every person is different and here for different reasons, and it is both interesting and fun to get to know people and learn their stories.

Honestly, as you get older, people can remain clique-ee - especially in the business world. Though, in college - at least at FAU - I feel like people can generally get along and "bridge the gap," so to speak. Especially during classes. As long as you're nice and open-minded, it's easy to talk to people. There's one thing that's bigger than who looks like a beef-head and who the stoners are - it's the school work. I'd rather ask the smart girl in front of me for help rather than wonder if her fake tan means she likes Jersey Shore.

I think that one of the most common stereotypes about FAU students is that we don't have enough campus life and school spirit because we have a high number of commuter students. This, however, is far from true! During the last three years, which I have spent at FAU, I've made many friends who live on campus or who live in off-campus apartments right behind the school! Furthermore, I've been heavily involved in several clubs, which are a great way to meet fellow students! FAU also has a brand new football stadium, new Greek organizations and an ever growing number of student clubs and organizations. I am proud to be an Owl and am looking forward to supporting FAU as an alumni!
