Florida International University Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Johandra

The most popular student groups are the ones that offer a lot of opportunities to meet other people. Fraternities and sororities are big on campus. We may not have a lot of Greek houses, but they definitely have a presence on campus. Other big groups include UNICEF, SGA, and professional honors societies.

Sofia

I work at the gym which is where like everyone hangs out. On a sat night you go on campus and there are always activities happening. People in Miami are always partying so there's always something to do. Students in dorms keep the doors close.

There are many events and groups at Florida International University. Fraternities and sororities seem to be very popular and appealing at FIU. People want to join and others support by buying cooked goods at bake sales. Our athletic program isn’t great but getting better and the support is growing. Our administration is even awarding Panther Points when students attend games and a student can build up their points to win great prizes like HDTV 1080 TVs, IPads, laptops, IPods and more. Guest speakers and theater is not as popular at FIU. Before football games most students play drinking games off campus. I met my closet friends at orientation and a few from an ecology class where we have to spend 5 Saturdays out in some environmentally significant areas. If I am up at 2am on a Tuesday I am usually finishing school work, but other than that on the weekend I am hanging out with my friends. Last weekend my friends and I went to south beach. There are traditions at FIU like Sammies foam party, the homecoming dance, and homecoming concert. People party at least every other weekend. My friends and I don’t usually go to clubs every weekend because we have a lot of school work and would like to be successful in college. There are many things one can do on a Saturday night that does not involve drinking. For example, partying in Miami, going to game night at Biscayne Bay campus, going to the beach, going to a FIU basketball game, go to chili’s for dinner, or just hang out on campus with some good friends. There are so many off campus activities available for FIU students because we are in Miami. People can go to clubs, hookah bars, drinking bars, the Miami zoo, the seaquarium, the beach, go snorkeling, swimming, thousands of restaurants to dine at, and there is even a skating rink 15 minutes away from the MMC campus. FIU students have many opportunities to be involved with the school , the city and have fun.

Daniela

The most popular and well known group in FIU is SPC. they are in charge of all campus events for students. the fraternities and sororities are constantly active on campus and many students attend athletic events.

Isis

The most popular groups at FIU are the sorority's and fraternity's. However, that is not all. There are many other clubs that are active and showing their school spirit. One club that is always active is SPC, or Student Programming Council. They plan activities on campus and many are free to students. For instance, every Friday they play a movie on campus with two showtimes, 5pm and 8pm.

Sarah

There are endless amounts of organizations, clubs, etc. I am involved in Water for People. It is out of Colorado. We assist in raising awareness in bringing reliable aqueduct systems to third world countries. Athletic events and guest speakers are very popular. There are various activities on a daily basis on campus. My closest friends were met through mutual classes. Fraternities and sororities are important, and do have weekly events promoting self advancement opportunities. I attended a musical show at the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. On a Saturday night catching up on homework or upcoming tests is always a good idea. Work around the house, help with the family, movies.....etc. Seeking employment opportunities, relaxing, helping around at home. There is always something to get done.

Adnan

The most popular are the fraternities, Student Government Association, and the Resident Hall Association. I'm involved with so many things including all mentioned above. I can tell you more about it during a session. FIU is big on football, volleyball, and basketball. Hey! We are the winners of the Sunbelt Conference! FIU is big on traditions. If you kiss your loved one on the Kissing Bridge, you'll get married to that person. Rotate the revolving cube near the Deuxieme Maison building before an exam and you'll get A's! (Only if you studied) Step on the FIU seal and you won't graduate! And plenty more!

Zahra

Student Alumni Association, Greek Life, Dance Marathon, Relay for Life, Student Government Council, Student Programming Council and Student Organizations Council are some of the most popular organizations and activities at FIU. There are honor societies and clubs as well.

I feel as though fraternities or sororities are not that popular at FIU. I do not live on campus so i dont know about the living arrangements. But the activities at school are usuall from SPC or SGA and they are quite fun and entertaining. Football games are pretty important. The stadium is huge and it is always packed and you can definately see the school spirit. I met all of my friends through classes on campus honestly. My best friend i met in Biology II lab and we became friends because we have similar interests and career goals.

Student life is what you make of it. There are 2 greek houses on campus. A healthy dose of sports on campus and parties, especially around homecoming.

Lauren

Is there Social life here.....I wasn't aware.....

stuart

its MIAMI! there's always something.

Cameron

Social life is great for those who care, but most do not.

Nemo

I don't like on campus so my social life does not revolve around fiu parties or events. From what I hear the fraternities and sororities have a great time...

Julian

No such thing.

Vanessa

Sororities, fraternities.

Dale

there needs to be more activities for students on the weekends.

Natalie

I'm in a sorority and I think it's safe to say that Greeks are the most involved. unfotunately, it's a very small percentage of the student body. I know there's a lot of events going on but i dont think people attend them as much as they should. There's definitely a lot of partying...other than going out to a club/bar/friend's house to drink, you can go see a movie, play pool (but this often involves drinking as well!)...well, usually people involve drinking with everything. lol

Devin

FIU has a different activity going on almost every week, and sometimes several at the same time, they range from concerts to lectures by famous authors and so on

Jess

There are SPC and The Almuni association that are popular arund compaus. AS well as many sorrorities and fraternities. On the weekends I usually go to different clubs or shop, or veen the beach.

Elizabeth

I am involved in the Women's Studies Student Association. Essentially we organize and try to raise awareness toward women's issues and provide networking for its members. Our biggest event is the Vagina Monologues in February of every year which we host to raise money to end violence against women.

Eric

There are a decent amount of student programming events, such as a concert tonight featuring One Republic. Athletics are not very popular at this time. We get some good geust speakers but the are mostly only attended for classes. I met my closes friends at the Beacon, the student newspaper. Greek life has a very visible presence but there are many non-Greeks in the community as well. I live off campus so I'm sure there are many events that I do not know of , as well.

Daniel

FIU has many clubs and activities, so many that it is impossible to join ten percent of the organizations.

cindy

No clue, not really interested.

Gabriel

ALPHA KAPPA PSI

Kelly

I don't live on campus so I'm not inclined to participate unless someone is giving me gas money .

Andres

I am part of the Professional Business Fraternity- Alpha Kappa Psi and i dedicate a lot of my time to my fraternity to make a difference. Other than that i dont do much else due to time constraints.

Kevin

Events are plenty. I like a lot of groups. The dating scene is decent. A lot of friends. At 2 AM i'll probably be drinking. A lot of events, parties outside campus mostly. No opinion on most important frats/sororities. Last weekend I went to ale house. Saturday nights are good movie nights. Off campus I do many things.

Lee

GREEK, GREEK, GREEK. Basically the greeks run the school, from start to end.

Torry

Dorm life is not as vibrant as other schools in the country. I am almost always awake every morning at 2 am trying to find a way to make my college experience better, or trying to transfer

Monica

After 5 p.m. on Friday, the University Park campus becomes a ghost town until early the next Monday morning, which is also a real shame. I think there should be more big activities during the weekends - maybe concerts, film festivals, food festivals, etc. - so that students have more of an incentive to stay on campus during the weekend.

Ana

I am a pledge for Alpha Kappa Psi this semester. I am impressed with the amount of involvement available on campus. There is definitely a group out there for everyone.

Andres

Fraternities and Sororities are the groups that really get involved on campus. They run student government and bring lots of Panther Pride. FIU is constantly having activities. THere is always a guest lecture of some culutral event. Its great!

Torry

Greek life is active but very cliquish... whether the Greeks conscious or not of it Greek life is cliquish. FIU always has something going on every Friday and Thursday. If not there is always the Beach and College Nights at the Grove. Intramurals are active...

Jessie

-social greeks -I am in Alpha Kappa Psi, business fraternity -I meet my closest friend at a social greek event, off campus -Business symposium, job fair, homecoming, mega career week - partying occurs weekly - last weekend I went to my families house, went to a bar, studyed, and went to a sporting event - movies, bowling, dinner, theater

Ryan

what social life?

Abdel

more athletic activities please

Jordan

While there are many different clubs on campus only a minority of students get involved. Mostly it is the people in fraternities and sororities that get involved. But even then Greeks only make up about 1-2 percent of students at FIU.

Kai

The social life in FIU is amazing. There is always something to do in school and every week you hear about an event being hosted by an organization, greek or non-greek. Even on the weekends and in the most random places within the school.

Tate

Most popular Organization is going Greek. (Don't be a follower) Research something before you throw yourself in.

Ryan

FIU has tons of campus organizations that allow students the opportunities to pursue extra-curricular activities and socialize with other students. Athletic events have never been popular since the teams have been terrible, but the new football stadium opens in August 2008 so that should help... It's Miami, so there's always plenty to do.

vanessa

There are many activities at FIU but I feel as if there is not very much school spirit. A lot of this has to do with the fact that we are a fairly new school and our athletic teams, for example, don't get as much credit as they should. We need more clubs!

Alex

there is so much do to in FIU...i come in at 8am and i wont leave until 12am...as in at night...and thats because i need to go home and sleep..if i didnt have to, id stay in fiu for ever. we are young so tradition is not the biggest thing...but we do have 5 wonderful traditions and the fact that we have so many clubs and organizations and we live in the coolest city ever, there is never a boring day in the life of a panther

Tristan

not really involed socially

Natasha

SGA, SPC, Pi Kaps, Pike, I actually met my current boyfriend in my Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi. :) People party A LOT! Fraternities and Sororities definitely play a major role on campus... Most students on campus are very much involved in org/clubs, etc.
