What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

Carol

All are welcomed! Granted: the location of each stereotype is dependent on the building you might be crossing. As stated earlier, there is a high percentage of possibility you will encounter all these kinds of stereotypes as an FIU student. Predominantly, and because of the Miami electronic dance music scene prevalence (do blame ULTRA festival for the atrocity), these kind of bright color wearing- bass blasting individuals can be spotted more often than the rest. But bright colors in walking into a dull morning of an exam can make your morning slightly better.

Jocks, Cheerleader, Nerd, Geek, Loner, Druggie, Band Member, Rock and Roller, Heavy Metal-er, Religious Christian, The Socially Acceptable But Not Really That Cool Guy, Goth, Latin Student, Science Nerds, Greeks, And many more. Just look at the people around you and see what kind of person they are.

I do not like to use the term "stereotype" very much, as I think that negative (and often untrue) characteristics are often associated with the term. I much rather like to use "background" in its place, and throughout my university, at least from the impression that I've gotten, there are MANY diverse backgrounds among students. I have no problems with communicating with people and making friends, so I have become well-acquainted with all sorts of people on campus. At FIU, you will find people from all kinds of backgrounds: people come from Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Africa, and of course, Latin America, which is the dominant cultural background that most students at FIU share. I've made friends with people who are in fraternities and sororities, people who are very geeky, people from all sorts of social classes, and the best thing I see is that everybody seems to get along well with each other. There is no real discrimination between students at FIU, simply because there is so much diversity.

The biggest stereotype of students at my school is that everyone is a commuter and just picks FIU as their university because it's easy to get accepted to and it saves them money. While the majority of students at FIU are commuters, this stereotype is very inaccurate. We are an international university and being one means that there are many visiting professors and international students that make the diversity at FIU one that is unparalleled at most institutions. You'll also find that many of the commuter students truly wanted to go to FIU for a variety of reasons such as our law, business, and medicine programs, not just for convenience.

I would say a classic stereotype at FIU is calling latin students refugees. There are many latin students attending FIU, including myself, and they are not true. Latins are proud of there heritage and some may be more outspoken than others, but they do not need to be stereotyped against.

There are many stereotypes at Florida International University. A few examples are all our students are all Hispanic, FIU is a commuter school and our athletics programs are horrible or not supported. Though some people do live on campus, it is accurate that FIU is mainly a commuter school. That would also explain our large Hispanic population. Our school is only a little over 60 percent Hispanic, but it is an international school, there are students from many from different parts of the world. Our athletic program isn’t great but getting better and the support is growing. Our administration is even awarding Panther Points when students attend games and a student can build up their points to win great prizes like HDTV 1080 TVs, IPads, laptops, IPods and more.

Florida International University is actually quite diverse in its population with students from all over the world and of different backgrounds. I would say that the most common stereotype at FIU is probably that of "frat kids." There are numerous fraternities available for one to join and they certainly make their presence felt on campus by wearing apparel and participating in school activities throughout campus. Many people have a misconception that the people in fraternities are just out to party and have a good time, when the reality is that most are actually hard working students.

That they did not do got enough in High school to go to another school in the state like UF for example.

As in any other school, there are many different stereotypes. Everybody hangs out with their own group. However, as you walk around the campus you will definitely see groups of sorority's and fraternity's hanging or walking around. I would say that they are the most common stereotype on campus. Our school is very spirited, so you will always see them and other clubs advertising or preparing events for the benefit of our school.

Frat kids are rich, so they pay money to buy friends.

Given that the South Florida region is a highly diverse cultural melting pot, students from outside cities, states and countries will often take note this fact. FIU is viewed as a commuter school, in that the majority of students that attend do not live on campus. FIU is a large school, which has a wide variety of stereotypical students, such as geeks, business professionals, athletes and mathematicians. Given that Miami is highly rated on the scale of "beautiful people" in comparison to other cities, there is a higher proportion of attractive students to non-attractive. The majority of the student base is close to their early 20's, although there are many students in their upper 20's, as far as their 60's and 70's who attend. FIU is somewhat of a party school, with occasional events on campus, but that distinction is far more common in Florida’s upstate colleges, such as Florida State University and University of Florida.

Florida International University has a reason for having "International" in its name. We are one of the most diverse schools in America. Apart from being located in Miami, the university is home to a huge number of nationalities. In fact, the atrium in the Main Center or the Graham Center, has flags for every nationality in the university. Don't worry about not finding your designated friend circle, because every kind exists at FIU. We have multiple fraternities and sororities, of honor, professional, and social kinds. We have organizations or clubs for every single thing from poetry clubs to FIU's very own established Student Government. And don't worry about the lack of girls, it's Miami ;)

The stereotype of students at my school are preps, surfers, frat and sorority kids, and business-attired students. This stereotype is quite accurate because many students dress as if they have ransacked American Eagle, or immigrated from the beach with shells strangling their necks and flowery shorts resembling the patterns on their surf boards. Then there is the students who wear fluorescent form-fitting t-shirts with capital letters that is not even remotely interpreted as an acronym. Finally, there is the professional "clean-cut" students that are nicely dressed, but one may wonder if this sophisticated appearance reflects their academic stance. They are a walking mystery to me.

When I was in high school, FIU was always portrayed as the "backup school" in case you don't get into the university of your choice. After being rejected from my dream school, I had no choice but to attend to FIU. I had the idea in my head that I'm only at FIU because I had no better place to go. But after a very short while, I got involved with Student Government and other organizations on campus and my view about this institution changed very quickly. Soon I realized that FIU gives you many opportunities to learn outside the classroom. I met student leaders, who were the brightest students I had met and they were going to FIU too. I realized after a while that FIU isn't a backup school; it's an institution that not everyone has the priviledge to attend! Only those who think and are Worlds Ahead can be the proud students of this institution!

Too many spanish people at FIU

Jocks, fraternities and sororities are the known social, party kids. There are the geeks that work for the school, the IT department of it.

I don't know! It's either well diversified, hence the name Florida "International" University, or something else, which I can't see clearly.
