What is your overall opinion of this school?

Carol

I have been a panther since the beginning of this fall semester and so far I am enthralled not only by the facility itself but by the quality of education provided. It is all quite exciting and ultimately amazing.

Sofia

I love the people you meet there. One thing i would change to have more dorms on campus. I love that FIU so big. When I tell people about FIU that they love it. I spend most of my time at the gym, thats where like everyone hangs out. I love the school admistration. FIU has a lot of school pride. The school doesn't have anything unusual that I haven't noticed yet. The most student complaints is bills or when student drop classes and want a refund.

Juliana

FIU has amazing food and restaurants! Those which include Chilli's, Subway, Einstein Bagels, Chik fil A, Starbucks, and way more! This school is huge, definitely too large, but that suits most people since everyone is very social and outgoing. It also has the second highest number of foreign students in the state of Florida, most of them being Hispanic, which is not that big of a shocker since it is located in Miami. The main campus is very entertaining! It contains a pool area, a gym, several play rooms, and a six floor library. There are various campuses throughout South Florida, but the transportation system serves great for this purpose.

Admissions to FIU is one of the most competitive in the state.

Mishka

My overall opinion about this school is it has a lot of excellent social and academic opportunities; it provides an great environment for student success!

Matthew

I believe FIU is a great school. It was actually the only school I applied to as a high school student, and I have always wanted to come here. There are many benefits at FIU such as great professors, many resources such as the learning center, a tutoring center, and a large variety of on campus food venders. FIU is very large and is continuously growing. For some this might be a bad thing, and it is when it comes to parking. However, we should take pride in our school for being so large, diverse, and ultimately becoming world renowned. I love Florida International University.

Daniela

Overall FIU is a good college experience. when it comes to tuition, your getting a great price for university credit. Even though parking seems to be an issue at times, they are constantly trying to improve the traffic and parking situation. There is plenty of school spirit with constant events held by SPC. This campus is pretty active and one will always see something happening. As long as one does everything on time and accordingly, you should have no problems getting classes, books or financial aid.

Isis

FIU is one of the best university's out there. I wouldn't change one thing about it. Its size is just right and the people you meet there will forever stay in your heart. A great benefit is that the professors are always willing to help you, whether in class or in office hours. One of my favorite things of my school is its pride! Whether by joining a club or attending the sport games, students at FIU do their best to support their outstanding school. GO PANTHERS!

Stevens

Definitely a College Town atmosphere, everyone on campus is so friendly and willing to help you if you have any questions. The school size is just right and is getting a lot bigger in population. People are amazed that I'm at FIU and congratulate me for such an achievement. Most of my time I spend it in class since I have back to back to back classes everyday. The school's administration is very professional and punctual meaning they are on top of their game when it comes to aiding students with their requests. School pride is always the key to the success of this school. Almost every student on campus proud of being a panther by wearing gear of FIU. The one thing students complain about frequently is the parking in school but every semester it is getting much better and more room to park. One experience I will always remember is my Freshman Orientation. The presentation and experience was amazing and was excited to start my first semester. and the Best thing about FIU is the diversity on campus. The school is rich in different cultures, races, ethnicities, religions, and sex affiliations. The school offers numerous majors that you can embrace into your career.

Florida International University is a respected college, primarily due to its School of Business and it has expanded its resources to include a School of Law and a medical school. The college hosts approximately 40,000 students, with numerous locations throughout Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. The South Florida region is much less of a college town, as compared to Tallahassee and Gainesville upstate and Boston, Massachusetts. For those who enjoy a large college, FIU hosts 2 large campuses, the Modesto Maidique Campus and the Biscayne Bay Campus. People have a positive reaction when I say I attend FIU, but not nearly as positive as the one I've witnessed by others who have said that they attend University of Miami. The school has somewhat of a decent selection of degree programs. On the downside, the persons I often encounter when I have a scheduling conflict are highly unknowledgeable about my concerns. I often have to navigate through several departments to receive a legitimate answer or payment correction. I have witnessed the level of pride of FIU, although it is not nearly as great as the pride of University of Miami.

The assistance when needed is always available. I have an excellent experience with my advisers. I do not have an issue with any part of FIU. It is just right in size, I consider it to be a large campus, yet not too big. People admire FIU, and do consider it to be a reputable facility. I spend most of the time on my campus in the library, and in the gym. It is a very peaceful environment. FIU is a college town. Very optimistic, endless activities going on at all times, driven by the students. The administration is excellent There is a lot of school pride. Being in FIU on the day of a game is very exciting

We are International for a reason. If you want to become a global citizen, incorporating the global learning and perspective FIU helps you build, then this university is the place for you. FIU is a big campus; I remember getting lost there during my first stay. It's the right size especially for freshmen, since their main buildings are bult closely. The residence halls aren't apart and are close to each other, so one doesn't have any difficulty in getting to other halls. In fact, we have PantherTrams or small vehicules that take students around campus. FIU is an enormous school in terms of population having more than 40,000 students. Because of that, the adminstration can get slow at times. But imagine the exposure one gains by being amongst a multitude of diversities. We don't have school pride. We have PantherPride! I remember my first orientation day. I had just come from a different country with three huge bags right into the university. Being early for dorm check-in, I had no place to keep my bags. The FIU Orientation Office kindly let me use their storage space till the time my check-in date came. I believe FIU's parking makes one more attentive and alert because there's a shortage of it.

Florida International University (F.I.U.) is a cultural diversified school that provides many opportunities to minorities, foreign students, and those alike with a bright and achievable future ahead of them. F.I.U. is like a very own civilization, a home to many that has an abundance of buildings, school and food related stores, and a beautiful scenery filled with abstract art. There are areas I enjoy adventuring to, such as the Green Library, when I need alone time to study or read, or the Graham Center, when I want to meet up with friends or when I want to make fun of the horrible and really loud music vibrating against every wall; it's inescapable. F.I.U. has a diversity of places to attend to to fit your mood.

Zahra

FIU is a unique institution, a family oriented one. Because we have a few campuses, the student population is not too large. In one phrase, "FIU is AWESOME!!!"

jacquie

FIU is not too big and i think it is a great school. I spend most of my time either in the cafeteria with a friend or studying in the library. The resources on campus are great. There are many events going on at both campuses. It is easy to get involved, and there is never a boring week at school! I love that there is always an event with free food or music or FIU stuff! Both campuses are good for different reasons but overall a great university.

mayra

The campus is big, you have to walk a lot if you are taking classes from different college. FIU is known as international school that is located near south beach, so a lot of people go out there and party. IT is near a good location, where they're lots of plazas, restaurants and convenient stores. GC building the place where most people spend as it is where the cafeteria is and the lounge area is and the bookstore is there and so is a starbucks, which is upstairs. Across from it is the library. There really isn't much school pride. One complaint i hear constantly is about the business advisors, that it is hard to get an appointment with them and when you do, it is for 5 minutes. It is a great campus, where you can lay on grass and study with the beautiful weather.

Bartleby

It's terribly overcrowded, and the people who work there generally are selfish; that's why I rephrase FIU as the university that is good at F****** It Up. There's a lot of things done under the table that students should realize; I'm transferring ASAP.

Brett

FIU began as a commuter school. The main campus is in the heart of Miami, 30 minutes from the beach and 20 minutes from downtown. In the last 10 years they have grown immensely and now offer more options for living on campus. There Biscayne Bay Campus is a smaller quite, natural setting by the ocean while the Modesto Maidique Campus is a large urban campus that includes a football stadium and many other typical college life amenities.

Lauren

If you plan on leaving with your BA in four years, consider somewhere else. The classes are not conveniently scheduled and the administration has drastically cut classes which hurts professors (as they are paid by the class) and students. FIU IS COMPLETELY CORRUPT!! IF YOU ARE A GRAD STUDENT CONSIDERING BEING AN ADJUNCT GO SOMEWHERE ELSE THEY WILL SCREW YOU HERE. FIU administration thinks the concept of a "deadline" for making decisions is a joke and will rob Peter to pay Paul...and guess what...the students are Peter!! The crap they pull with mis-leading happy happy we are commited to your education BS is tantamount to FRAUD.

stuart

okay, my opinions are totally skewed because i'm on the smaller of the two larger campuses. The best thing about FIU are the people! And the fact that the university is very young so you contribute to the legacies and traditions. The campuses reflect the city (Miami) and is VERY diverse. You can run into anyone from anywhere. But naturally , people do tend to stick to their pockets of ethnic and cultural comfort. There isn't a lot of school pride but we're working on it. I for one love FIU, flaws and all. I really dont think it can get better than this, inexpesive and good education. I think college is what you make of it, and I regret nothing except for all those study abroads I never did.

Cameron

No spirit, too commuter, expensive to live at, good quality education at great price, not great money management, priorities in administration not always the best, administration is way too political.

Nemo

Really big place. I haven't personally been to some of the alleged bigger universities but to me the sheer size of the place and the amount of students is mind-boggling. The advantage of the huge size is that there is a place for everyone to feel confortable and to hang out by choice, not because "everywhere else was full" you know?

Julian

FIU pretty much, in spending, robs Peter to pay Paul - we have tons of shiny new buildings but we have elevators that don't work.

Gabi

I hate Friday classes. I wish the Honors college were not so pretentious. I think the English and Political Science department has some great professors.

Vanessa

Like everyone else, I which FIU's parking was better. I also wish that the Financial Aid office, especially, as well as the rest of the school provided better customer service and was more willing to help a student out then knocking them when they're down.

Dale

Need more parking for students.

Natalie

Most people have no faith in FIU, but it's really accomplished a lot in a short time. People who do hang out on campus stay around GC. It's tough to get people involved at such a big school in the middle of a big city. Most people have "better things to do." I wish more of the student body had school spirit and cared to get involved. If our athletics improve as much as they say they will, I think that would have a huge impact.

Devin

I find that the environment in FIU is positive and welcoming. The library and other resources available to students are quiet helpful. Most people I talk to enjoy coming to FIU and do have pride in their school (i sure do). The budget cuts are affecting the school somewhat, as not as many classes are being offered and maybe not everything one would like, but even though the school has to count with significantly less money, I don't think the students have felt too much of a negative impact. One of the only problems I have with FIU is that everwhere you ask you get a different answer (this issue is especially true with regards to the Financial Aid Office)

Jess

I don't spend much time at FIU I pretty much go to class then tracel back home, since I live about 30 minutes away.

Elizabeth

Because its an international school, you are exposed to such a wide variety of cultures and different kinds of people. It's not located in much of a college town so if you're looking for that sort of experience its not really the place for you. However, as a commuter student its ideal because of location, number of classes offered and the scheduling for classes.

Christopher

Too much emphasis on athletics.

Eric

FIU is different from many other choices within the Florida State University System, because it is located in a metropolitan area rather than a "college town." The school also has a more modern feel since the buildings were recently constructed as opposed to the stereotypical campus style of brick buildings. The reaction I often get when I tell people that I go to FIU is "Why?" presumably because other Florida schools have more of a historical representation, but these people are often not aware of FIU's growth an expansion, including new medical and law schools. FIU's administration, like any bureaucracy, has its flaws. It is a typical college complaint, but athletics are put above academics in many instances. While this does have the opportunity to pay off for universities since athletics generates revenue, with the record of the Golden Panthers football team, it is sucking more money than it is bringing in. Especially with the recent budget cuts, many programs and services are suffering at the university, and it's hard to say that out of order priorities are not to blame. Yet, all that aside, FIU is a fine and diverse learning institution with positive aspects not well known to the general public.

Daniel

The school is just the right size. The tuition is hard to cover for out of state students however it is worth every penny. There is always something to do on campus but it can get dull if you don't go home for breaks.

cindy

I like the school. But I hate their parking. There just isn't enough space. I get there 45 minutes before class and it is difficult to find parking. I think the advisors can be more lenient. I have not been fully admitted to the college of ed, I need advising and I just keep getting thrown around.

Gabriel

This is definetly a commuter school, the best thing is to get involved on campus.

Kelly

FIU would be a good school if it were more organized. The professors, advisers, and administrators often don't know what they are talking about. i know it's not a private school, but people still pay money for it so I think it could be more organized. The people who are supposed to help you should me more cooperative and helpful.

Andres

I think the school is growing adequately, so for me the size is perfect. I spend most of my time either in the gym or in GC. But miami is definitely not a college town and it does not have that feel at all. I dont know enough about the administration, but from what i've seen they're great. There isn't much school pride, there aren't a lot of controversies, i doubt there are too many student complaints...But i do enjoy my time here and love FIU.

Kevin

Best thing is that there are many diverse people. One thing i'd change is parking. I think our school is too small. There isn't much reaction when I tell people I am from FIU, my family is alway proud. I spend most of my time in the library or the dorms. "What college town? GC?". I don't have a opinion on FIU's administration. Most recent controversy is probably the preserve. There is a decent amount of school pride. Don't see anything unusual. Orientation was very memorable. Parking is the most frequent complaint.

Lee

IT's a great school if the student would open up their eyes a bit. It offers so much, rare too many institutions.

Torry

The school is too large, this is definitely not a college town, and not enough school pride.

Monica

One thing that I would change about FIU is the university's size. FIU is fairly small and I wish it would grow more. However, sometimes having a larger student body/campus means that you lose being able to get to know someone -- and I would not be willing to sacrifice that.

Ana

FIU always has something going on, there is always an organization commanding your attention in the Graham Center. Also, no matter how big FIU is, there is always an opportunity to receive individual consult and advice. I've always been pleased with FIU. Parking is an issue but it's taught me how to stalk people coming out of the elevator.

Andres

It is a large school with many options. Most people think FIU is a low rank school, however, in recent years our prestige is quickly rising. It set in Miami where its great to be a colleg student because of the beach, night clubs and great ethnic foods. I would say a pride is definitely growing. This University will be well known in a couple of years with its new Law school and very new medical school.

Torry

FIU's culture can be brought together by the word diversity. Take that word and apply it to lifestyles also and that is what FIU is about.

Jessie

-the diversity is the best -I would change the advisment process -Our school is just right in size -Not impressed -In class, GC or GL -Miami, is too big to be a college town -They are messy, mess up all the time and misplace things often -Controversy, would be the funds that go cut -Not that much school pride as I would like -Unusual, is it diversity -biggest complaint: HOW HORRIBLE ADVISMENT IS FOR BUSINESS STUDENTS

Ryan

it needs a lot of improvement in education. better instructors hwo care for there students

Abdel

lack of financial aid

Paige

The best thing about FIU is the flexibility it offers students and the ability for students to work and study. I also like the environment of the campus, it is very relaxed and carefree. I wish it was less of a commuter school, but then again this is what distinguishes us from all others. Since it is a commuter school, I think it deters school spirit at times and causes low attendance to school events. Among the most frequent student complaints is the parking situation and the class selection. There has also been controversy over the amount of online classes and summer classes available.
