Florida State University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Melissa

I think my classmates are motivated to succeed but often look for an easy way out.

James

They are full of life, new ideas, intellegent thoughts, and self-control.

Amanda

Goal oriented and proud to be a seminole.

Josiah

Nice people.

Julia

About 2/3 are here to actually learn and get training for careers, the other 1/3 is made up of partiers, girls looking for husbands, and people who came just because college was the next step after high school.

Elizabeth

I have only really walked around campus so far, but the student body seems friendly and willing to give out advice. I am starting my first semester at FSU in Fall 08 and have only walked around campus twice during the summer.

Raneitra

They are focused and committed to success.

Brogan

In high school, you could walk out during lunch and just see all of the different cliques sitting about. Everyday, it was all of the same people hanging out together. Since I have been at FSU, I have not experienced this early education phenomenon. I see a cornucopia of students all around campus. Things like major, politics, religion, race, LGBTQ issues, socio-economic status: they seem to matter far less than they would have before. For the most part, students interact well outside of their normal groups.

Stacy

Most FSU students are from Florida, but being an out of state student at FSU I never really was bothered by anything except when they talked about bright futures (and woe is me, I pay 200 a semester for school)... it had it's benefits, I got to pick a different friend to spend thanksgiving and easter with for the past 5 years!

Becca

There is an organization on campus for every interest/group/idea that you could imagine. The diversity is pretty good - but is primarily white. The democratic group seems to be more active than any other political organization. Get involved in student politics too - they do make a difference.

Alicia

people wear anything to class from pajamas to high heels

Caroline

All kinds of people are here! Greek life is huge, i feel like greeks and non greeks are completely separated.

Jessica

Most students just wear jeans, a t-shirt, and flipflops to class.

Harper

A lot of FSU students are from Florida but the few that do come from out of state, I would advise them to get involved with Greek Life because it really helps so much with the transition. Most students dress casual to class, you'll see the girls and boys with Greek T-shirts and sweats on and you'll also see girls with their hair and makeup perfected...it depends on the day of the week I guess. I think most people are very easygoing and friendly here at FSU. At least that is what I have experienced so far. VERY VERY VERY easy to make friends here.

Emmerson

Most students are dressed down for class, like t-shirts and jeans with flipflops. Not so much in my classes, but on campus, that is what is most common.

Robert

Very diverse. Every class I have has all different shades and sizes of people. Not just one race or gender sticks out in any of my classes.

Laura

I like that it feels like there is an equal ratio between guys and girls that attend FSU. I don't feel like I go to an all girl university ot vice versa. My classes are balanced out and it doesn't seem like there is more or less of one gender.

Blake

i think the student body is very diverse. just walking around campus you can tell that different ethnicities are present. i dont think anyone would feel out of place. students wear the usual jeans and a t-shirt with flip flops to class. i think that financial background are prevalent because we are all so broke! everyone talk about trying to save money and that they cant afford anything

Cameron

A lot of religious people come to the union to try to change your faith but usually someone is always testing them. No student would feel out of place at FSU, there are many different people that all relate together. Most students just wear jeans and a t-shirt, the real busy girls wear dresses and what not.

Lauren

on campus there is no discrimination at least to what i have seen. i wear very "bum" clothes to class like jeans and a shirt with flip flops its a very laid back atmosphere when it comes to clothing. most students are from Florida but there are those from Panama City, Panama because there is an FSU campus there. we definitely talk about earnings mostly everyone wants to be well-off.

Nina

Very diverse. Because we have such a big international and study abroad program, there are always international students in my classes which is nice.

Jenna

I feel that we are a very diverse student body and we have many races, religions, and social classes at FSU. I think a student from the lower class would feel the most out of place at FSU because there are a lot of rich students. Most students wear everyday clothes to class. Different types of students interact during class but not as much out of class. Most FSU students I've met are from south Florida or central Florida. Students are not very poitically aware although some are very active in politics. Students do talk about how much money they'll earn one day or hope to earn.

Kelly

I think that Greek life tends to be a big thing on campus. However, like I said earlier...FSU is really diverse and that's something that I really enjoy about our school. I just wish Tallahassee was a bit more cultured

Alice

As a business student, a lot of my friends are definitely focused on the amount of money they will make in the future. I was surprised to realize how many people in college come from affluent backgrounds, much more well-off than mine. Nearly all of my friends have very nice houses and their parents are often college-educated as well. I guess it is the natural progression that my friends in turn are expecting their incomes to be equally high or higher. We have a lot of entrepreneurs and I'm sure they'll get there!

Mike

FSU is a very diverse school. People of all races, religions, ethnicities, etc. are welcome with open arms and no discrimination. A lot of students are politically involved and I chooses not to hold grudges towards those holding different views. This school has a good number of students with middle to upper middle class backgrounds as well as those students able to support themselves.

Andy

I'm am very happy with how diverse the student pop is. Students are generally not politically aware just like non college students. College students generally realize that there is no incentive to care because so little is in our control. Especially the info presented to us about the candidates

Justin

There is a lot of diversity on FSU's campus. We have people driving Land Rovers and people who don't even own a bike getting along like best friends. People dress very casually for class. Most of the students I've met are from South Florida.

Evan

There is not much discrimination between different ethnicities and religion on campus, but some kids feel uncomfortable around African American kids because of the stereotype they are given from the less affluent that live close to the campus and are often seen near the bars. There really isn't any discrimination between different economic classes, and everybody generally gets along well. The kind of student that would feel out of place at FSU would be somebody that likes to have a lot of alone time. If you choose to live on campus you do not get much alone time and there is always something going on. Also if you are extremely shy there are plenty of people that will go out of their way to warm up to you and make you feel more comfortable. If you want to keep to yourself or play video games most of the day you might be bothered by everybody else around you. Most students wear a t-shirt and gym shorts to class, but in some of the higher level classes they wear suits and other business attire. Also some of the fraternities require their brothers to wear khakis a button down and a tie. Different types of students constantly interact. The attitude is very friendly between students and students usually hang out with a number of students from different ethnicities and backgrounds. Also most groups do not restrict themselves to any certain clique one might associate themselves with. In the dining hall there is typically the table that has all guys, and it can be either frat-looking guys or nerdy-looking guys, or there will be a group of mixed boys and girls. Sometimes there will be a table of all girls with the same stereotypes of the all guys table. And other times there will be some student sitting by themself, and sometimes somebody comes along and asks if they would like to sit with their group. There really isn't any area that most FSU students are from inside Florida, but generally all students are from within Florida. There are not that many students that have a very strong financial background, but many have strong to medium financial backgrounds. There are not that many that can be considered low-income, but there are still some from the lower income classes. The most common would be kids from middle-class families. Most students are politically aware and active, and many are registered to vote in this upcoming election. Political banter between students is common and is generally between what presidential hopeful they are backing and why. There isn't any predominant group of students that is classified left or right, but most of the students that I know are politically conservative. The politically left and liberal students are generally louder about their stance and more defensive about why they make their decisions, but there doesn't seem to be any more of either side of the spectrum. Often students think ahead to how much they might earn and what good they will be able to contribute back to the community because of their success. Some students are more greedy and just focus on how much they will be able to make for themselves, but the majority don't really talk about how much they expect to make unless somebody asks them about their major and what they plan to get a career in.

Ron

There is unfortunately a dearth of political activism on this campus. The standard form of footwear worn yearround is flip-flops.

George

There are mostly frat and sorority girls around FSU.

Harper

I don't think anyone would feel out of place at FSU... that's whats awesome is I've made friends with kids in frats and with the "creative" types. I think the thing that FSU has taught me about social interaction is that being open to new ideas, new people, and new ways of thinking is the best approach to life. 2 a

Mandy

I think that FSU is a very diverse campus with a varied population. I don't think anyone would feel out of place at FSU. Most students are very open to other cultures, races, orientations, and religions. FSU students are very laid back, with most students wearing jeans or sweats to class, most bearing the Seminole colors. Most students are from Florida, or are local. Students are very active on campus, with a large conservative population on campus.

Megan

I have only seen positive reactions the the racial religious, and LGBT groups on campus. I have never heard any nasty or vulgar things in relation to these groups. In truth it feels like everyone is part of a giant community. I really don't seen anyone feeling out of place here. Maybe someone from an extremely large city but other than that I think it is pretty well rounded. It feels like most FSU students are from South Florida, but you have the occasional people that are from out of state. Most are from Florida because of Bright Futures Scholarships.I see all types of socio-economic backgrounds. There isn't a specific one that is especially prevalent.

Parker

There's a fair amount of groups on campus. Mostly it's racial groups or frats and sororities. The kind of student that would feel out of place would be, I think, foreign students, but that's what a lot of groups are doing for them. Giving them a place to share their experiences and be with others that share their background. FSU students are primarily from Florida, but all over. I'd like to see more people from around the world. Just so I know that this is a place that is esteemed by people other than Floridians. Theatre students usually joke about, or try to avoid, topics pertaining to their future financial situations.

Leslie

Most students wear whatever to class, whether its sweats because they came from the gym or business attire because they have a meeting afterwards people just wear whatever they want and it's acceptable. Most FSU students are from Florida because of their amazing scholarship programs but I have met many a student from out of state.

Jesse

very diverse, open minded

Dale

There are all kinds of people at FSU. There is a high population of homosexuals, because it is a liberal arts school. Most people come from in state, but I have met quite a few folks from up north as well. There is a high population of Greek life here so most people wear 'frat gear' to class- Sperrys, North Face jackets, Costa sunglasses, Guy Harvey shirts, etc. (We are in the South here, come on.) But it isn't overwhelming, and you can generally wear whatever you want. (one time I even saw a guy wearing a skirt and platforms... not kidding.) FSU is pretty laid back and allows you to express yourself as you please.

Lauren

I have been affiliated with racial, religous, and socio-economic groupds at FSU as well as other organizations. They are amazing groups for people to feel at home and comfortable with in a place that many do not call home. No student would feel out of place at Florida State! There is something for everyone. What do students wear to class: everything! I usual opt for the business casual with heels approach while some of my friends opt for gym wear or even pajamas! Different types of students always interact whether it be through different organizations or even dorm life. The four tables of students in the dining hall can be described, in the beginning of the year, as hometown friends, band friends, future frat/sorority friends, or even roommates. By the end of the year, the only word that can describe it is diversity. Most FSU students are from Florida, specifically south Florida but there are students from everywhere! There is no prevelant financial background for studnets. Yes, students here are very politically aware and active! When I was a freshman, I joined the Vote!FSU Coalition which helped people register to vote and also educated people about candidates so that they can make an educated vote. Since there are 40,000 students on campus, I am never sure if they are predominantly left or right, but center seems like a moderate guess. Students do talk about how much they wish to earn one day.

Morgan

My experiences, at first, were almost traumatic. Coming from PG County Maryland, right outside of DC, where there is a 92{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} Black population, it was VERY hard for me to adjust to FSU's population. I wanted to hop an a plane and go to Howard ASAP! However, Ive adjusted (sort of)...I think that any minority who was raised in an area where they were NOT a minority would feel a little out of place. At least, I did. Most students are chill when going to class. Usually a t-shirt from some random FSU event, shorts, and flip-flops. Different students do interact. Im not necessarily one of them, but others do. One table of rich white sorority/fraternity students (discussing why they have an 07 lexus and not an 08), one table of black students (discussing whats upcoming for the BSU), one table of average white students (probably one black girl/guy who was raised in a white area), and one table of students who are tediously studying for their next exam which is a month away...Most students are from Florida. Most students have a moderate to high income financial background (not me, but most do). Students are politically active and tend to be extreme with their decisions. Everyone talks about graduating and grad school...not much beyond that.

Emily

I dont think that any student would feel out of place here. The only thing would be whenever you get around the sorority girls and frat guys- they flaunt money like its nothing and so it makes you feel like your poor! Other than that we are pretty diverse.

Amanda

FSU is an extremely open minded campus. There are many people from all back grounds and all walks of life and I have never seen any sort of hate crimes. Most students wear jeans and tank tops or t shirts to class. Just wear whatever you are comfortable in. It seems that a lot of FSU students come from south Florida but FSU has students from all over the US and the World. And most of the students are from middle to upper-middle classes. Although there is both extremes also.

Megs

There is no student that would be out of place. FSU is VERY diverse, and also very tolerant of our fellow 'Noles. Jeans and t-shirts are common class attire, there are the random Sorority girls who always get dressed up, but they are few and far between, and there are just as many lazy bums who stroll in wearing their pjs, or even their clothes from the night before! We all interact together, everyone respects each other. It doesn't matter who you are, most people are willing to help and are nice to each other. It's not uncommon to have discussions with totally random strangers at the bus stop or in the elevator or line at financial aid! Students are VERY active politically, from any and all sides. And it's not just in politics, Florida State students are willing to stand up for what they believe, we are known to take up the cause that we feel is important and needs or deserves to be heard. Being in the capital city provides a clear outlet to voice our thoughts and feelings to those in charge. We have opportunities to be proactive in ways other students from other cities may not, simply because we are right down the street from the capital building!Florida State has something for everyone, and everyone will fit in anywhere they want to place themselves. It is not uncommon for random people to be sitting next to one another in the dining hall and become fast friends, simply because there might not have been any other open tables. At FSU, this is not awkward, simply what we do, we help one another out.

Samantha

- I feel that there is a very broad diversity at FSU, with opportunities of involvement for all different people. - I think there is a place for everyone at FSU. - Some people come to class looking like Barbie. I personally go in t-shirts. The later your classes are, the better people look. - Everyone interact with everyone on campus. - If there were four tables in the dining hall my guess would be one is a student ministry group, one is the party table, one does nothing but study, and the other is a group of well rounded individuals. However, it is mostly freshmen in the dining halls, so they are still searching for their place at FSU so those table could trade people 1000 times. - Most of the students are from Florida because of Bright Futures, but there are others from out of state. Who doesn't want to come to the sunshine? - There are a large range of financial backgrounds. - You will see political posters everywhere. - These posters will be for every different political party. - Most of the student are ambitious and want to make something of themselves, but they don't walk around talking about how much they are going to make. Who knows if they will live to tomorrow to graduate?

Ali

In the Seminole Creed, diversity is a HUGE HUGE HUGE deal. I know that students have followed this diversity aspect. Teachers have led a great example of not only accepting, but promoting diversity. Students too have promoted diversity. Organizations all around campus are incredibly diverse, and people are accepting to it too. I can't think of a student who would feel out of place around campus because students and teachers are so welcoming. Some days students wear sweatpants. Regular days, I see jeans and a nice polo or blouse. Around the business building there are days where everyone is wearing business attire. It is generally a very laid back and casual attire. I see different types of students interacting all the time. We rely on each other for support in school, so we look past the outside most of the times. However, it is more common to see students only bonding with those who look like them. A lot of students come from right here in Florida. Some from the north, but most are close to home. I think that the middle/uppermiddle class students are what forms most of FSU. Students aren't that politically aware to be honest. I am not myself, and I find that I have more important things than take the time to learn about political things. There are plenty of students though that are aware, and help people like myself become aware. The bad thing about it is that it is bias.

Liz

The student body here is very diverse and welcoming. Certian activities (Greek) look down upon differences in demographics, but there are many other areas for those excluded or un welcome to participate. The atmoshpere is very casual and what you wear to class is determined by what you do on the campus out side of the classroom. Most students do not discuss what their financial status is, but their appearance and the "tables in the dining hall" give a good indicator of what backround they have.

Nelly

There are always people "preaching" near the union. I think anybody could feel welcome here. It ranges from pajamas to designer clothing. Yes. Skaters, Art students, Business students, Others. Everywhere. I don't know. Yes. I don't know. Sarcastically they say they'll make millions.

Lindsay

I don't really think anybody could feel out of place at FSU. There is something for everyone, as long as you look. Most students dress very casually. A lot of sweat pants and t-shirts. The main areas students are from is: Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Orlando, and South Florida.

Jill

I think people only feel left out here at FSU if they aren't involved. Being such a large school with so many students, it is almost critical to get involved so that you have a niche and some type of organization to call 'home.' Most students wear t-shirts and flip-flops to class, since there is no reason to waste the cute outfits for going out :) I would say that most FSU students are from various parts of Florida.

Meghan

One of the things I love about FSU is that there is a group for everything. One of the biggest organizations on campus is the Black Student Union (BSU) and promotes the interests of the black students on campus. The diversity here allows everyone to fit in somewhere, regardless of your religious background, racial/ethnic affiliation, sexual orientation, etc. Most people are very open to this diversity and accept that there are people from different walks of life. It makes coming here with an open mind a must because at one time or another you will encounter someone that will be different from you and you will have the ability to learn from them, as well as have them learn from you. Most students wear jeans and t-shirts to class. Nothing too fancy. My only suggestion is don't wear pajamas. Also, beware of Old Navy flip flops (the old kind at least) because the bricks and paint get really slippery when it rains! The majority of students here are on some form of scholarship - whether it be Florida Bright Futures, academic scholarships, athletic scholarships, etc. In regards to financial background, most students seem to come from a middle class family, but have hopes of establishing themselves more financially in the future. In regards to politics, not everyone is educated and aware of what is going on. There are political parties for FSU's Student Government Association (SGA), College Republicans, College Democrats, etc. Overall, I see FSU as a predominately left university, though it is very easy to find students with opposing political stances.

Gene

I haven't seen much racial issues although i've notice the student body tends to be a little separated when it comes to fraternities and sororities. i think anyone can fit in here unless you are just completely into the big city scene because FSU is NOT that at all. A lot of students here are from south florida i've noticed. I see a lot of wealthier students here mainly in the sorority/ fraternity scene. but there are students from all family income levels. A lot of students talk about what they'll earn oneday. that's what we're here for right?
