When you step off campus what do you see?

Amanda

Many places to eat!! Good, college friendly food! and of course, many apartments and clubs.

Brittney

There is a lot of student housing around our campus, but there are also restaurants, parks, and many other places to go.

It depends on which way you go... North--student apartments, food, clubs, more apartments, food, clubs....and if you go a little bit further north you get to the suburban part of Tallahassee East--downtown, which is clean and friendly and charmingly southern, full of things to do (food), the capital building... South--Gaines St and the art district. Here there are art supply stores, thrift shops, local food vendors... West--the first thing you see is the lovely Doak Campbell stadium, then there are more options for food and living.

I see the beautiful town of Tallahassee. Some people may not know this, but Tallahassee has some of the most breathtaking parks in Florida. MaClay Gardens is only a 15 min drive from campus and it offers hiking, kayaking, biking trails, etc. I even saw a wedding there because of how nice the area is. If you are an outdoorsy kind of person, Tallahassee has lakes and parks every few miles that you can go and explore. I also see a really great art community in Tallahassee. Right off campus is this place called Railroad Square. I took my friends to see it and it is awesome. Every first Friday they have a big festival with artists all around Tallahassee showing and performing their work. Even just hanging out at the railroad tracks is something different to do off campus.

When I walk campus I see a budding town. There is everything you need within walking distance from campus (for the most part). And if it is to far to walk, the FSU bus will take you right there. There are shopping centers and restaurants lined up on Tallahassee's main drive, Tennessee. There are places that deliver and places that are the lowest prices so that they won't break the already broken "starving college fund" at all. There is so much to do here in Tallahassee, you'll never be bored.

Immediately surrounding FSU's campus is the capitol down College and some more urban areas on the other side of Tennessee St. Because FSu's campus is contained in one large block of land, students especially freshman probably won't find themselves going off campus much. Most of the popular student bars are either right across the street or a short ride (you can take the Night Nole, a free bus route that runs at night to popular bars and apartment complexes from campus) from campus. The campus is so beautiful you won't want to leave.

Honestly, Tallahassee isn't the most beautiful city in the world. The city itself is probably the biggest downside of going here. I was born and raised in Fleming Island, just south of Jacksonville, so I am very used to being outside and around water... Tallahassee barely has any lakes or rivers, and if they do, they're most likely man made. Also, there is "French Town" near one side of campus, across Tennessee Street, which is a bit sketchy. Aside from all of that, Tallahassee, being a college town, has some of the best apartment complexes with resort-style living (usually gated), and the campus itself is very nice and comforting.

Lots of hills, trees and nothing-ness. There are clubs, restaurants, a couple of parks, a museum and a "downtown" that is very empty during all times of the day or night (with the exception with a couple of events, at which point, downtown actually feels like a real downtown area). In comparison to Orlando or Miami, there is very little that is offered in the city of Tallahassee.

Jena

Students everywhere and a clean school with busses picking and dropping people off. Restaurants at the union and great buildings named after the majors filled with awards and posters advertising events and achievements made around campus.

Chelsea

One of the important aspects of going to school is the town you are living in, as well. Firstly, the area around campus is dominated with college-catered restaurants, student housing, and clubs. The circle around that area is filled with fancier eateries, parks, and non-college oriented bars. Around that there are farms, more parks, and where Tallahassee non-student residents live. The terrain of Tallahassee is difficult to maneuver on a bicycle and also can be confusing by car.
