What are the academics like at your school?

Leslie

A lot of my professors don't know my name personally especially since most of my classes are big lectures but in the 20-30 person classes they know my name based on how involved and spoken up I am. Students study far more than I expected, everytime I go to the library it's usually pretty full and study groups are a big thing which is helpful.

Jesse

class is great, most of the time its actually fun to go the education is mostly theoretical

Dale

There are classes with 2,000 students or classes with 15. It just depends on your major or what courses you decide to sign up for. The best class I took was a poetry class where there were 20 students and we got to write our own work and have workshops. (I'm an English major... give me a break here.) Least favorite was psychology. As for studying goes, it depends on the person. When I'm at the library, there are always people here. FSU students definitely have intellectual conversations outside of class, and there are always performances and concerts here if you're into that. There are also great opportunities to get to know professors here and create a mentoring with them, and later you may even be able to conduct research under them.

Yes, some of my professors know my name, especially the ones from my freshman year and some from this semester. My favorite class right now would have to be Games and Decisions or Applied Microeconomic analysis. Both classes force to rethink how you see things. Games and Decisions forces you to make a decision based on the correct probability and payoffs; while, Applied Micro Analysis allows to see the best possibly way to make business decisions accoridng to shifts and curves in the market. My least favorite class was Financial Marketing, Bank and Monetary Policy from last semester. I never understood it, but I will definitely take it again this semester because I want to be able to grasp the concepts. Students study every day (depending on what else is going on, but it is usually still every day). Class participation is common in classes that seem more difficult, have more opinion topics, or just have fun, interactive professors. FSU students definitely have intellectual conversations outside of class because the topics discussed in class usual affect the students lives in ones way or another. Students at FSU are competitive but it's a healthy competition that makes you want to excell beyond the point where you would normally cease. The most unique class I've taken is an Honors Music Seminar in Ethnomusicology. I loved the class and the concept of the class. I also loved doing a music based project on the history, rituals, and popular music of a certain nation. My major is Applied Economics. It is a challenging major, but it is so very intersting! Not only do you learn the laws of supply and demand, but you apply to things that are relevant to businesses as well as households. Also, you take that application and make the best decisions that you can given the informatino available. I spend time wtih professors outside of class for homework/assignment help and also to talk about future careers in economics and even graduate school. FSU's academic requirements are up to par with how they need to be, and I do not feel that they need to change. The education at FSU is geared to what you want to be geared to. some classes are meant for simply learning to some (like my Mythology, Shakespeare, and Music classes) while others are geared towards job training (like Applied Micro) for some. It is what you make it.

I dont even knw my professors names, so I doubt that they knw me! Favorite class:Anatomy Lab. Least fav:ANYTHING involving chemistry. I think the majority of students study a LOT more than me....I watch TV instead. Class participation is common on the first day of class (mandatory), tests/quiz days, and finals week. Intellectual convos....not that I can tell. Students are competitive. Everyone wants to be the best. Unique class:Classical Myth. Dietetics is my major. It focuses on nutrition and diet. I dont see my professors outside of class...Very high standards and academic requirements. Its a lot of work, but it should be, so Im not complaining! Some people gear their education to getting a job, some learn random stuff just for the heck of it. I refuse to do the latter...

Professors do not know my name. Classes are so big most of the time that it is hard for them to know my name. My least favorite class was race and ethnicity w/ Mickelson. The class was unnecesarilly hard and only his previous students recieved good grades. I am straight A student and got a C- in the class! errghh. The Psychology department is wonderful! I dont feel like students have the best intellectual conversations out of class, but i say this because there are so many freshman everywhere so you only hear them! Once you are a 2nd semester sophmore or a junior, conversations get much better, and not only about partying. I do not spend time with professors outside of class. FSU education so far for me has been geared toward getting a job. Its great!

My proffessors all know me. I am in my major, and have personal relationships with almost all of my professors. Of course there is always that one person who you just don't mesh well with, but they are always proffessional. It's a little rough during the liberal studies stuff because you're classes are bigger and they are weeding people out, but once you get past that, you will truly enjoy your collegiate experience and even *gasp* enjoy going to class! I study a decent amount. It doesn't completely consume my life, but my grades are important to me. I have worked hard to get here, I pay a lot for it, why would I want to throw that away now? Of course FSU students have intellectual converstations outside of class! That is who we are, we are intellectuals, just because we can party it up on the weekends, doesn't mean we also don't enjoy expressing our opinions and things we have learned and know to one another. Students are VERY competitive. We take pride in what we do. We are intelligent, high functioning students who have all fought long and hard to get here, we want the best, we EXPECT the best, and that includes from our classmates and peers. I am a Family and Child Sciences major in the College of Human Sciences. Picking this major was the best decision I have ever made. I have loved EVERY minute of it, have learned soooo much, and now that it is coming to an end, I am exploring every way to prolong it as long as possibl! FSU's academic requirements are strict, but they are possible. They expect a lot from us, but if you just suck it up and do it, it always works out and makes sense in the end. I do not regret or feel any of my classes were a waste of time. (except maybe College Algebra...)FSU is very much geared toward your career. We have many options to speak with alumni who are in our career, we have a nationally recognized career center to help you with your resume and internships and such. Alumni from FSU tend to prefer to hire students from FSU, we have a great alumni career network full of jobs just for fellow 'Noles!

- Some professors really try to get to know you, but sometimes classes are too big. If you need more personal attention it is easy to access most professors. - My favorite class so far has been physics. The professors in that department are amazing. My least favorite would be Calculus 2. It is hard to find good professors and they are really needed for such a hard subject. - I personally study a lot, but there are others who do not. - Class participation is common for some classes, but is sometimes are to facilitate it in a class of 300. - I have experienced some very deep intellectual coversations on many different occations outside of class. - I have a competitive side, but I haven't seen anyones flood over into school activities. - My freshmen english class was writing about shopping. I didn't really expect to be able to take something like that. - I love the Civil Engineering department! I work for one of the professors and he is wonderful both in the class room and on a personal level. I also work closely with the physics department and they are a great group of professors to work with. I don't spend tons of time with the professors outside of class, but I do often have other interactions with them. - I feel that FSU's academic requirements are pretty fair. - I haven't witnessed anyone just trying to get the job. Most people seem to be very passionate about their area of study and really want to learn it. In the end I think most will be successful because of that.

In smaller classes professors know my name. My favorite class is my management class. One of the first things my professor said was "I love this school." She is positive about campus and during lectures, tells stories and keeps my attention. My least favorite class is my marketing class. My professor always complains about the school and when she lectures, she basically reads out of the book. I think students study a lot! It may not seem that way, but students really care about academics. Around finals and tests times, I find that students are in studying and I always meet groups of people who I can study with. Class participation is common in my classes. I have classes where the teacher lectures the whole time, but I see that teachers are noticing that an interactive class is a more successful one. Students do have intellectual conversations outside of class. I see students bringing up class subjects and casually conversating with fellow students. I always bring home what I learned, and learn from my friends too. Students are competitive, but they are more helpful towards their competition. There are times when students are competing for a limited high grade in the class, but they always help other students in need. The most unique class I've taken was an online class about the old south. It was interesting and a different atmosphere because it was online. The old south aspect made me think and I actually traveled to Savannah to learn more about it. No, I don't spend anytime with professors outside of class except the occasional office visit to review an exam grade. Education is definitely geared more towards getting a job. If it were for learning, there would never be curves in classes. I think it is fine the way it is because a job is our ultimate goal. Learning is something that occurs even outside of college; we don't even need to learn half of the stuff they teach us anyways.

I am a student of the Recreation and Leisure Services program at FSU. My professors in my program know my name. Within in my program some students are highly competitive, but it is a program based on individual and group work, being competitive pushes you away from your classmates. The program needs some help to address the changes in the recreation field, there is little emphasis on special events, but in the feild, it is the fastest growing.

Nelly

Yes, it surprises me. Race and Ethnicity, the professor is awesome, she makes the material interesting to learn! Classes with monotone professors aren't fun. Depends on how much material will be on the test/quiz. Yes. Some of them. Sure. I haven't taken any that were really unique. I'm undecided. No. I think some of the requirements are kind of dumb. So far it seems like learning for its own sake.

Megan

I love my courses. I love my professors. FSU is still (i think) one of the top 10 criminal justice schools in the nation, and seeing as how that is my my degree focus, im excited! We do have intelligent conversations outside of class. It is not all about boys/girls and partying!

Lindsay

Some of my professors know my name. I have some 200 people classes, and some 30 people ones. The smaller classes give profesors a chance to learn everyone's names. Students study different amounts at all times of the day and night. Study rooms always have someone in them, even at 4 in the morning. One of my professors for chemistry, hold study sessions on Sundays before Monday tests, so we see him outside of class. Usually people only see their professors outside of class in their office hours. Students are competitve depending on their major.

Jill

It is definitely easy to get to know your professors. Even if it is a large classroom with over 100 students, contacting your professor and staying in touch with them is extremely feasible. My least favorite classes are writing classes of any kind. Students at FSU study A LOT, contrary to what people may think. People are always in Strozier until all hours of the night. Believe it or not, we do have an academic side to us :) Students here definitely have intellectual conversations outside of class! FSU students are very competitive, in my opinion. Whether it be for parking, winning an intramural game, or cheering on our athletic teams, we are always looking for a win. The major dislike that I have towards FSU's academic requirements are the credit hours required to graduate. I, for example, will be done with all of my major classes ON TOP OF completing two minors by the end of this semester (Spring 2008). However, I still have to complete a WHOLE YEAR'S worth of extra credit hours so that I can graduate.

Meghan

My favorite classes thus far have been my religion courses (Religious Ethics and Moral Problems, American Protestant Thought, Religion/Self/Society, Christian Tradition). My least favorite classes were the computer class that every Florida college student is required to take and Baby Bio (Biology for non-majors). Most professors make an attempt to get to know their students, but in larger classes that seems virtually impossible, so class participation is a must! Also, most professors have a portion of your final grade be based on class participation, so asking questions and voicing your opinion can even take you from a B- to a B+. Based on your major, the amount of time you spending studying varies, though the majority of classes are interesting enough to spark conversations outside of class. Your major also depends on how competitive students are. Fields such as Communications and Exercise Science are far more competitive than others. I do feel that, as a whole, the academic requirements are definitely manageable. Both the Social Sciences (for Sociology) and Religion departments offer a wide variety of classes in practically any topic you could want to study under either. These fields are based more on reading and writing than formulas and tests, so if you want to be in either field, expect to have reading every night and write more papers. The advisers in both departments are extremely helpful and the passion that most professors have in these fields are evident in lecture.

Gene

In my english classes they do, but in my regular classes, there is no way. Most of my classes have at least 100 students in them. My favorie class is economics. I really dislike mythology that I'm taking right now. Students study a lot i see. participation is usually common. yes they have intellectual conversations outside of class. And i've seen some very competitive students. i haven't taken a really unique class yet, but its only my second semeseter. I am an economics major but i am not formally admitted yet because my liberal studies aren't complete. I haven't spent time outside of class with any professors although they are very available for help. i think the academic requirements are fair. and education anywhere is what you make of it.

Jesse

I'm sure a few in the French department do. My favorite class was French Literature in Translation. Or... the Ethics class I took Freshman year. Least favorite was probably biology. At FSU, most students study just before the test. :) Class participation becomes more common the higher the subject level. Some students do discuss outside of class, some student don't. They usually take place at clubs and other extra curricular clubs. Students at FSU are mildly competitive; at least, in my experience they were. I believe that education at FSU is geared towards getting a job. There are a few classes for the sake of learning. But they (the administration, and professors) know how hard it is going to be for us. So there are a lot of opportunities at every level to beef up your resume and attend job fairs and what not.

Jamie

Most professors here know the students' names. If they don't, it's because they teach large classes or lots of classes. My favorite class was Social Influence with Fred Randy Blass. It was so inspirational. Every day was exciting and surprising, and I couldn't wait until the next class period.

Blake

Professors especially in upper level (3000 or 4000 level) classes know my name. I'm a finance major, so anytime I don't understand something, I go to my professors and they know me because they see me outside of class 2-3 times a week. Students are competitive but we help each other out at the same time. The most unique class I've taken is Investment Theory. We set up our own investment portolio and keep track of it all semester. I love my major and love learning about it. I don't like all of the liberal arts requirements...such as the "x" or "y" requirements. I feel they are a waste of time and unnecessary. I feel like if you know get to know your professors well enough, they can lead you in the right direction towards getting the right job.

Jack

professors and faculty are amazing. check ratemyprofessors and you'll see. most are very nice and fair--and these are the type that make going to class engaging. it's nothing like high school where they baby you. they tell you flat out what they expect, and you work at your own pace. you'll find them lenient and caring about their students.

Professors don't know my name; my favorite classes are my major-specific ones and my least favorite were undoubtedly the pre-reqs. I took a Meteorology class with an old man in a class of about 100 students and it was absolutely horrible. Another bad one was my College Algebra class Freshman year. There were too many students and the TA's couldn't speak English. It was dreadful, to say the least. FSU students seem to be dumb overall. And I wouldn't say they're particularly competitive. The most unique class I have taken was a lab for a class called "Introduction to Textiles" and I loved it. The TA was optimistic, helpful, and interested. I love my major but I think the department needs some work. The requirements are just fine.

Ashley

In my smaller classes (around 30 students), almost all of my professors know my name. In the lecture classes (over 100 students), I've only had one professor know my name, which was actually a huge surprise to me since I'd never had a conversation with her. My favorite class is my fiction technique class with Elizabeth Stuckey-French. I'm definitely not a fiction writer, but she has inspired me to try and I've actually came up with some good stories. My lease favorite class was micro-economics. The professor was an alcoholic and had no clue how to teach. The only class I've ever failed at FSU. The most unique class I've ever taken was Ethical Issues. We watched Buffy and analyzed it most of the time. Still not sure what that has to do with ethics. I hate that you have to take foreign language for a lot of the majors on campus. I think if someone wants to learn a foreign language, they should do it for fun, not because it's required. I'm actually horrible at foreign languages and it pulls my gpa down a lot.

Most of FSU's professors are down-to-earth individuals who enjoy teaching just as much as many of the students enjoy learning. Each college and/or discipline within the University has top-notch staff willing to go the extra mile to ensure that a student's education is on point. The only problem is, with so many students at Florida State, you don't meet many of these awesome professors until you are in upper-level courses. For example, FSU offers an intro-level, non-major Biology lecture class with 1500 students in it. Once you do jump this hurdle, though, it's hard to resist being able to knock on your professors office door and know they'll actually answer.

Florida State University gained its present name in 1947. Originally, it was known as the Florida State College for Women. At the time FSCW was renowned nation-wide as one of the most prestigious women’s colleges that not only educated their students academically, but also as an individuals. Their school goal was to create Femina Perfecta or the “Completed Woman.” They nurtured each student emotionally, physically, and mentally by educating them to be responsible and happy individuals, students, and citizens. After WWII and the GI Bill, FSCW became FSU and integrated males in the female student body, but FSU did not loose sight of FSCW’s mission. Even today professor and faculty staff seek to educate individuals, not a mass of anonymous students. There are a few classes that are very large, but most advisors will not recommend students take those unless they feel prepared for that particular academic setting. Most range from twenty to forty students. Science and math classes, the bane of most students’ existence, typically have twenty-five students. The largest class I have been in was forty students and the smallest was ten. While I would like to say that at FSU every professor is perfect, you will have good experiences with professor and bad ones. I know I’ve had both. The great thing is at FSU students evaluate their professor not a faculty committee and its up to the students’ response on whether a professor is rehired. But more often than not you will love your professor at FSU. My favorite professor actually gave me seven hundred dollars worth of anthologies upon her retirement as a gift!

My major is creative writing, so my favorite classes really include imaginative writing and fiction technique. I like that there are class workshops so that you get feedback on your writing. It is a good way to meet people when you are all discussing your favorite literary works and pieces that you have actually written. Personally, I completely dislike science and math, but my first semester I took Finite Math and it actually related to the real world and made sense to me. As for science, Archaeology-which I thought would be interesting-is one of my least favorite classes so far, as it turns out, I do not find digging very thrilling. I really enjoyed Social Psychology, and Relationships is one of my very favorites! Students are very competitive, especially when the major (creative writing, for example)is competitive and not everyone gets accepted. It depends on the class and most definitely the student to determine whether the teacher will know your name or not. In all of the English classes I have taken, my teachers have known my name. It is not as common for Professors to know their students names in a large lecture class, so generally the teacher will only know the students names who participate a lot.

Evan

Yes. Creative writing workshops. The professors know the exact questions to ask to make yourself answer them and make you a better writer by your own accord. Least favorite class is any lecture hall. Students study a LOT! Class participation is very common, encouraged. Yes. Yes. Most unique class I've taken is underground music and it is very interesting and engaging. English/Creative Writing program is stellar. Yes. Strong academic requirements. We hold students to a high standard. Both, which is how it should be.
