What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Laura

Much of the information I wanted to know about the school and its amenitites were available to me throughthe website and the various offices available to students.

Shane

Academically, I feel that I was well prepared for school. I was confident in what I wanted to study and what I wanted my career to be, however what they don't tell you in high school is that if you go to college undecided it could be costly because each class you take costs money and some classes you just don't need.

Sabina

Nothing quite prepared me for the frat and sorority nonsense (I still consider that culture absurd). The other thing that shocked me was the price of everything- transporation, additional class supplies and resourses, textbooks, etc.

Rachel

Not to buy a meal plan. I would have saved a lot of money and had a lot more edible meals. It honestly is not important, but I would buy a very selective meal plan that has a lot of Flex Bucks to eat at restaurants so that I could go out more with my friends. It was great and all to sit down at Fresh Foods and Suwanee (our main dining halls besides the Athletics cafeteria which is delicious food but has limited hours) but I would rather not have to pay over $1000 for food that is sub-par.

Elizabeth

I wish I had known that managing money is not easy and that making and sticking to a monthly budget is really helpful.

Cinthia

I wish I would have known how inconsisent the weather is and that there would be a lot of walking to get to places.

Kaitlyn

One thing I wish someone had told me about freshman year is that you don't need to be scared or nervous. My high school was really bad, with a few really amazing teachers, but for some reason they had the idea put in our minds that college was going to be extremely difficult and the professors were going to be really mean. My first day of classes I was extremely nervous, but once I met the professors after the first couple of days I realized that there was no need to worry and that I was just creating stress for myself. All of the professors I had first semester and now during my second semester are fantastic, nice, and helpful, there truly is no need to worry.

Landis

Before attending FSU, I wish that I had known more about the student organizations present on campus. Had I come in with some knowledge of interesting student groups I might have been more inclined to join during my first semester. This would have lead to a broader social interaction during my first semester of my freshman year. However, I am now attempting to find my way into a number of organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and a knitting club.

Bailie

Prior to attending Florida State University, I wish I had known exactly how passionate the professors and staff at the school are. Transferring from a two-year institution to a larger, four-year institution, I though I would be just another student passing through a vast student body. However, I have quickly discovered that every professor and every person on staff at FSU wants every single student to thrive and achieve his or her dreams. Professors are always willing to help students by giving them advice and helping them find the resources they need to help achievce their full potential.

Christine

I wish Florida State University was more focused on providing easily accessible information to students. It always seems as if I have to scour three websites and have my calls transferred five times before I can reach anyone that is able to answer my questions, be it concerning my major, course enrollment, or housing. For example, I am planning on enrolling in a few summer courses, yet I have no idea what sessions to sign up for or even what classes will be offered.

Alan

I wish I had known what a great social experience awaited me and I would have been more motivated to complete community college in a more timely manner. Florida State encompasses the perfect mix of social experiences and academic progression. I've met many lifelong friends throughout the journey and will continue to develop new relatioonships in my remaining time on campus

The weather is temperamental. Be prepared for anything at any given moment. Time management is literally the only way to succeed... Anywhere. Regardless of what you think or do, someone is paying for your class whether its your parents, yourself or taxpayers... So ... Go to class get an education. We are the less than one percent of the world's population that actually has this opportunity take advantage of it. Learn and don't be afraid to try new things, if you hate science take a bio course you might find a new passion... Its never too late for that.

sydney

Hannah

I wish I had known more about what Florida State has to offer its academically minded students. The Honors Program at Florida State is very prestigous and places first year students in a more confined classroom setting in order to better challenge its students. The students involved in this program are able to receive more one-on-one attention from their professors and classmates, which fosters closer ties between students. In addition, there are numerous honors societies in which a student may join to create friendships with other students striving for academic excellence.

Victor

Coming from a small town, I was surprised at how much crime exists in a Tallahassee. Knowing this may have changed my decision to go to FSU but crime is something that happens regardless of the campus.

Sarah

I wish I fully grasped how important high school grades and test scores are to your college experience. If I had studied a little bit harder my entire tution would be paid through Florida Bright Futures. Instead, I only get 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} covered and now I am struggling to find other alternatives.

samantha

I wish that I would have known who my roommates would have been so that I could have lived somewhere perfect the entire time.

Just how much it costs to go to college. I was aware of the costs on paper but actually having to save up all my money I earn and still take out loans is a completely different experience that I didn't realize until I got to college.

Kelsey

I wish I had known more about the off-campus housing opportunities as well as other scholarship opportunities. I wish I had known more about tutoring and different ways the University offers academic help to students who need it.

I wish I would have known how alone you are. No longer is everything handed to you and you aren't always reminded of when things need to be taken care of. You have to be very independent and outgoing to reach out and make friends and take care of all your responsibilites on your own with not all the help you were given in high school. Being smart is not the key to college, time management is.

Briana

I wish I had known more about the majors offered and how competitive some of them are.

rachel

how to find more money to help my parents pay for school, Fafsa does not give money out to everyone even if they really do need the help so I wish i had more oppurtunities to find money espcially with my dad being unemployed now.

Brogan

I wish I would have known to talk to my acemdemic advisor before I signed up for my first classes. I ended up taking a class that was not needed and I did very poorly in. If I would have known that my advisor would have chosen a better class for me to take I would have started my freshman year with a better GPA and wouldnt have wasted my time and money on a class. I now go to my advisor everytime I sign up for classes and I'm on a much better path.

Jennifer

Before I came to this school or actually college in general is the big difference there is between being a student in a high school versus at a university. After graduating from the international baccalaureate program, where there is an intense, tremendous amount of workload I did not even flinch at the matter of being in college. However, in high school you are going and staying at a fixed time per day and constantly you are reminded by your classmates, and teachers about when certain assignments are due. This helps to alleviate some disorganization, but at college, its all you!

I wish that I would have known about the contracts for a meal plan and housing before I signed it. In a way, they trick you into signing it without telling you everything. For spring semester, I intended on getting rid of my meal plan, but apparently the contract is for the entire year. Now I have to find a way to get $1,600 for spring semester. Same with housing, I was going to move into an apartment so I could save money next semester, but I am stuck in this contract.

Eric

One thing I wish I knew before I came to FSU would be that everything will be taken care of. Coming from NJ, I was scared to be on my own for once but FSU made it really easy for me to come in, ask questions, and learn about the community and myself.

The undergraduate research at FSU gives students the opportunity to work with highly acclaimed faculty and staff in their desired field. Students are able to recieve a Research Intensive Bachelor's certificate.

Alyssa

Coming from the Mid Atlantic Region, I wish I had known about the daily thunderstorms (at least in the summer) and the humidity! Not that it would have changed my decision, but I would have at least attempted to be a bit more prepared.
