Probably the most popular groups that I hear about are the football and basketball teams. Clubs often times depend on majors and I always hear about the business clubs which are prevalent in everyday talk. My closest friends I met at work and I have one best friend from classes. Oktoberfest is the biggest event of the year for the school. Fraternities and sororities are not very big around here, there are only a couple and not high on anyone's list. Off campus I work, I live, I do pretty much everything off campus and because the town is small I'm still close.
The biggest groups on campus seem to be the Black Student Union, Greek life, Hispanic-American Leadership Organization, and the Student Government Organization. In sports, we exceptional when it comes to basketball and wrestling, with a football team that is kind of hit-and-miss. All athletic events are free for students, so we make up most of the crowd during games. The biggest organization I am a part of is the Sigma Chi fraternity, where we are attempting to rebuild the Greek foundation this university used to have years ago. We are adding a new fraternity next semester, so the growth aspect is there, it's just a matter of getting our name out there more than it already is. Something traditional that is done in Hays, Kansas is Oktoberfest. Our Volga-German background has been an inspiration for this event for years and years, and each and every student that comes here enjoys the event, as well as the locals. People don't party too much when it isn't the weekends, but the late life is usually thriving. People don't seem to sleep until about 1:00 or 2:00 a.m., and it seems like everyone's dorm room is open. Off campus, there is bowling, mini-golf, regular golf, the mall, movie theatres, movie rentals, sports bars, and plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Oktoberfest is a big event that many of the students take place in. I would say some people party quite a bit at least 2-3 nights a week. There are other activities you can do that do not involve drinking such as go to the movies, play putt-putt golf, frisbee golf, or go to the famous Sternberg museum. Throughout the year there is what is called the Encore series and they usually take place on a weeknight and they vary from acrobats to comedians to musical events. They usually have pretty good shows. One year Ruby Studdard, a former American Idol singer, came and performed.
