Franklin and Marshall College Top Questions

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Daniel

I love the school, but unless you have a car and spare cash, the local area is dead.

The professors at F&M are absolutely incredible. There are not graduate students here, so all of the professors want to work directly with their students. As a freshman, I was asked to do summer research with a professor in a department that wasn't even my major! When they say you are welcome at office hours, the professors here mean it. They really want to talk to you, and will even give advice about life outside of their classes.

F&M is great! People that don't like it here didn't want to come here in the first place. The other student review complaining about F&M is just a student that never wanted to be at F&M nor made any effort to form a social life, participate actively in student organizations, or realize that only 1/4 of our school actually plays sports.

The school is small. Classes are good and teachers are bright, but the kids are dumb because they were all recruited for sports since our sports teams are bad. The school took up STUPID kids to fill the sports teams. Think about it, about 1,500 kids are on athletic teams at any school you go to...this school happens to only have 600 more kids. This means about 3/4 of the school didn't get in, but was recruited cause they know how to kick a ball. Way to go!

Those who have heard of F&M acknowledge it as a good school with a great academic reputation, but there are a LOT of people who haven't heard of it ("Franklin and Marshall? Never heard of it." Get used to that). The biggest complaint from freshmen (and others without access to a car) seems to be that there aren't many places on campus to eat. There are a few good restaurants within walking distance (although they cost $, so most of us don't go that often). Everything that is said about professor accessibility (i.e., that it's basically AMAZING) is completely true.

I believe F&M is the perfect size. I came from a small private high school (500 students), and i am particular to small schools. A lot of people have never heard of F&M but those who have are quite impressed when they hear that you attend there. Small college town but the students do not frequent it. The F&M administration is always available and usually very willing to help.
