I think Fresno City College is a good starter school. It'll save you money, you'll make some friends, but ultimately most people transfer to CSU Fresno State.

Fresno City College feels like it is at odds with itself. It has an excellent reputation for a 2-year college, and it has many career-based opportunities beyond what a 4-year university would ever be able to provide. The majority of the staff (teaching and otherwise) I've encounters are enthusiastic and interested in what they do, and often have relevant experience. The college has even recently added the requirement that teaching staff have master's degrees in a relevant field. However, as a non-traditional student with career experience and many units from other schools, I see a side of it where rules set by the college discourage the application of previous classes and experience toward accepted course credit. Also, the mandatory academic advisement can be difficult to navigate because different advisors can give conflicting information or leave out important details. That said, everyone has always been as helpful as they are able and I'm now well on my way to my Associate Degree.

I think it is a pretty cool school that would be really interesting to me and that they have the classes i would really like to take.

Fresno City is a place where all students can go to learn the general requirements they need for the Undergrad. I've met some really great people there, the professors are very knowledgeable for the most part, and the parking isn't too bad. Overall I really enjoy Fresno City College.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I came to Fresno City College with the desire to transfer after only one year to an art school in San Francisco. I based my class schedule on the art school's transfer guide and was completely focused on the subject I planned to major on there, which was filmmaking. After only one semester at Fresno City, I had completely changed my mind. Not only did more reaseach show me that the aforementioned art school was not right for me at all, but being thrust into the new enviromnet which was Fresno City made me open up to new experiences. I have shifted my major focus and I don't know what school I will be attending after FCC. Yet I'm okay with that. I will stay where I am for another year and do research to really find out where I want to be. If I could go back in time to talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to be open to different possibilities. Then I could have come to Fresno City unshackled by a rigid transfer guide and just let myself take the classes I am passionate about.

  8. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing right now is the budget cut, but I don't think my school has enough power to change that. Because of these cutbacks I have been reduced from full time student to not even part time and I have to sit in in classes I may not get into because of the already high demand of students wwanting to take that class. : (

  12. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing about school was managing my time. Back in high school we could procrastinate and still turn in late work. But now, if it's late, it won't be accepted. Using the correct amount of each hours for each class is very important as well as putting your effort into it. Everything was pilling up as i procrastinate to get things done when i wanted to. But i learned, there are deadlines to meet and behind these deadlines are consequences for no one but myself.
