The Southern Baptist roots are still prevelent and religion is a big thing. There are very much social extremes that create a dangerous environment. People are either at church, taking 'study drugs', or binging.

I wish I had known about my school's nickname for being the "Country Club" of the state. I went to a small private high and was one of two black students in my grade. I did not like it then, and I did not like coming to a college which was basically a larger version of my high school. I do not like the fact that my college is predominatly composed of rich white protestant students. I wish it was more diverse, not just a pretty, expensive "country-club."

The South and Furman are very conservative compared to the North/Midwest. Sororities don't matter for girls' social lives but fraternities matter for the guys. Everyone knows everything about everyone else. It's a small school and has a heavy work load.

I wish I had known that Furman was such a difficult school. High school could not have prepared me any worse for the challenge presented by Furman's academics.

Everyone was tht best at everything in high school. Everybody was either valedictoran, student body president, homecoming queen, star quarterback... You think you're special until you realize that you are no better than the guy in chemistry class beside you.

I wish I had known that there would be an annual tuition increase of almost $4,000 every year. Although I love the school, I would not have come if I had known this beforehand because now my family is strugging financially on account of my college education.

The school is overly conservative. The students come from wealthy families and protected "bubbles," and lack a grasp of the real world. As a result, they tend to be arrogant, close-minded, and self-righteous.

I wish I could have prepared myself with the knowledge that it is so easy to say "yes" to everything because so many things look interesting. It's not hard to become busy here! I wish I had known what I wanted to major in. It would have made my class choosing much less stressful.

It is not as diverse a place as I had originally thought.
