What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Lorie

Social life is very bland because all of VA is pretty bland.

Hanna

I'm involved with The Ethiopian Student Association, I am the vice president and have been on the exec board for 3 years. I love my organization, we always have fun and annually meet our goals.

Kelsey

*socially, george mason has few on campus activities that happen after 9 o'clock. there are few traditions and closeness between the students besides the people that have already bonded at events off-campus

Carson

I don't know too much about Mason activities, because I work a lot and don't get involved in the Mason clubs and groups. It does seem that they offer a wide variety of groups to choose from.

Jimmy

George Mason offers many clubs for students and allows students to create clubs that may not already exist. This allows for a lot of room for involvement in the Mason community. Mason also offers fraternities that are engaged in social programs.

Paul

I do not consider myself a social person, I am more focused on my studies.

travis

I have no social life ... im married

Lisa

I don't live on campus so I don't know what goes on when I am not here. But there's a good presence of Greek Life here and they do a lot on campus and you see their letters everywhere. Ethnic clubs are also abundant due to our diversity. Basketball games are pretty much the most popular athletic event. All the other sports are not worthy. The people I hang out with at school are mostly people I've known since high school plus mutual friends. We just sit around in the JC and make fun of people.

Megan

At Mason, your either in a Frat/Sorority or you play a Sport.... Students in dorms leave their doors open until you have a problem with stealing and then you are pretty concious of who is around, when your leaving your door open or unlocked. I met my closest friends through playing Lacrosse. If im awake @ 2am on a tuesday, im either drunk or studying.

Roxie

offers all kinds of clubs/activities for different interests

Kat

Theres always stuff going on, the religious groups are very active. I think the fraternities and soroities are active too but im not sure.

Cristina

I wish our lacrosse games were filled like the mens basketball games are. I am a very competitive person and i love watching other sports and supporting my fellow athletes.

Quinn

GMU is boring. people do not have social life. They just go to classes. most of them work before or after the classes.

Mike

There is really three types, Greek, Athletes, and other. Greek kids are a big part of the school and dont accept others. While athletes are accepting of everyone and very wide spread.

Hayley

I think sporting events are a great way to bond and support your school. I find that a large turnout really gets me pumped and shows that people support my team when we are competing. I'm not sure about what there is to do on campus on the weekends i would rather go to a party somewhere. I think Greek Life should be sponsored by the school more.

James

students go home too much on the weekends and most parties are frat or sorority parties.

Callie

The most popular groups here on campus are the sports teams and the sororities and fraternities. These groups both offer a lot of involvement, fun, and activities. My closest friends are the girls on my team (lacrosse), and I'm dating one of the guys on the baseball team. Most of the athletes hang out with the other athletes which is fun so we all get to know each other a lot

Warner

The basketball team is probably the most popular team on campus, I found being a greek organizations is probably the only thing that has given me a since of belonging on campus and given me somewhat of an actual college experience, other then that nothing, I party on the weekends and thats about it, Mason tries to have their sober eventso nthe weekends but their a waste of money, who actually wants to do that shit in colleege,

Caitlin

I'm friends with mostly athletes because I am an athlete. I am also friends with the people on my floor.

Josh

on campus life sucks because not that many students live on campus, there is nothing to do on the weekend. if you dont make friends your first week at school you probbably never will. In order to have an active partying life you better go greek.

Katy

Sports. Uganda help is a good group too if you like world issues. Students dont leave their dorm doors open. Last weekend I went to DC and a party.

Alex

If someone is not willing to go out and find people to hang out with on the weekend or find a party to go to, then it will be really hard to go out and have a social life. But htere are many organizations on campus to meet people. People just need the motivation to go out ad join them.

Ryan

Michele Goubadia ruins our social life.

jackie

Joing a sorority really gets you involved on campus and allows you to meet many people. My freshman year I was not involved in one and only met people who lived on my floor and that was not how I wanted the my college eperince to be.

Alex

Yes students in Presidents Park (freshman housing) leave their doors open. Once students move out of Presidents Park they do not. There are absolutely no guys at Mason...I met my closest friends my freshman year of college they lived on my hall and became part of my sorority. If you are not an athlete or in a sorority or fraternity you have no social life. When I go off campus I shop, go into DC, go to the bars in downtown ffx, arlington, and dc.

whit

greek life tends to be popular on campus but there are a number of other activites. There are lots of things to do as long as you look for them and are open to trying new things

Allison

Theres a ton to do. We have all kinds of clubs and organizations for EVERYONE, we have breakdancing, rockclimbing, sports, etc. I used to be involved in Pride and we were all pretty close, and hung out alot. Theres always something to do on campus, whether its people coming to speak or art shows, or events. We also have pretty decent parties depending on what frats you go to, a little known secret is that the Jewish frat throws the best parties. We have greek life, but its not really that important unless your actually in one. Theres still alot to do in D.C. too, which isn't too far. We go to alot of protests.

Ashwin

I dont drink and I dont smoke... Social Life Rocks....I have no clue abt on campus students as i stay off campus

Mel

The aquatic center is a fun place to hangout

scott

non existant

Sasha

The basketball events seem to be the most attended and they're a lot of fun. I have no idea if people leave their dorm rooms open, I can't afford to live on campus. I enjoy the traditional events each year, cultural week was fun and greek week was interesting. I'm looking forward to mason day and the fall event to welcome back the students was also a lot of fun.

Lee

Students in the Park (freshman dorms) leave their doors open. This is something that I have missed, because once you move out of the freshman dorms, the doors get shut for whatever reason. I met my closest friends at freshman orientation, in my classes, and through other friends. Every year, Mason hosts a variety of events, ranging from Welcome Week to Mason Week. On a Saturday night, my friends and I often just hang out at someone's room and watch movies or tv..the possibilities are endless (and yet none of them involve alcohol!)!

Kathleen

I don't live on campus so I don't really know what goes on during the weekends. We do have Mason day every year, where we just celebrate Mason. We also have a huge Homecoming Block Party. I met my closest friends at the chapel and I hang out mainly with them. Last weekend I worked and then went out with my friends.

Maria

I live off campus am married with a family. Not too much time for a social life.

Kristin

The groups I'm in include, Students for Life, College Republicans and Alpha Phi. I am the Treasurer for Students for Life which is a club solely against abortion. We've had a few really good speakers come and talk about abortions, including a doctor who decided to stop doing them. College Republicans is one of the best clubs I've been in. Every meeting there's either a speaker or a discussion, and plus they go on two really nice trips to Republican conventions throughout the year. Lastly, joining Alpha Phi has been the best decision I've made Spring semester. I've met so many new people and got to know a lot of other people better by joining this sorority and doing philanthropy work with them. These girls are truly amazing and classy, and I know the next three years are going to be full of great experiences and hardwork.

Gene

I don't live on campus so I really don't know much about what goes on there for fun. I have met all of my friends through classes, and they are not all COMM majors. I think fraternities and sororities are really only important to the people in them, noone else cares.

Brittney

Last weekend, I went home due to an unexpected water outage in the "D.C area," as Housing told me on the phone friday morning. Also, it was full of homework so I did not exsactly go out and party.

Caroline

At George Mason if you have any kind of interests there is a club for you. If there isn't a club make one, it's easy if you can find others to join. The organizations range from academic to religious to interest groups. Greek life at Mason is not like many schools. There is no greek row or any greek housing. Fraternities and sororities hav events, but only get time to shine one week out of the year (Greek Week). Mason basketball is biggest athletic event students attend. It usually gets packed and special games, like Homecoming, are often sold out and packed. If football is your sport you won't really find it at Mason. The football team is a club sport with little support. The school newspaper, the Broadside, sponsors "Game of the Week" where they give free promotional items to the first 20 or so students that come. Ike's is were you will end up when you are hungry on a late night. It's a diner on campus that is only open late. It serves up greasey dinner and breakfast most nights until 3am.

Erin

Sororities and Fraternities are definately present on campus though there are no sorority houses and the frat houses are off campus. If you don't participate it's not a big deal and it's not all that many students that are involved. Sports are a big deal. I play lacrosse and all the athletes are friends with each other and support each other at games. Basketball is our main sport that most students support since we don't have a football team which is frustrating and causes lack of school spirit. Some students leave their doors open while others choose not to. Depends on the student, I'd say it's half and half. A good number of people utilize the free theater on campus too. The dating scene is just as it is everywhere, nothing special. People party on the weekends. Not much to do on week nights and everything that happens party wise is off campus which means you need a driver and this is frustrating. Not much to do on a Saturday night that doesn't involve going to a party, if there is one.

Bill

Frats and sororietys. Im involved in wrestling. Dorms are left opens sometimes. closet friend was my suit mate freshman yr. Basketball is big, and so are concerts. People party every weekend. last weekend i got drunk. frat and soror are big. off campus i party.

Andy

There is a healthy academic life here but not much else. There is a lack of overall generally enthusiasm for most events except for basketball.

Amanda

The most popular team on campus is basketball. I was involved in club volleyball, it was interesting but their wasn't that many girls who stayed comitted. Students in the dorms normally don't leave their doors open. However, i think that type of atmostphere would be a lot more exciting. Athletic events are semi- popular, depending on the sport. I met my closest friends from class and my dorm. If i am awake on a Tuesday night i am probably on the internet. Mason Day happens each year, as long as different activities for the basketball team. There are a number of things to do off campus because of the location.

Harper

IF you really want to get in with campus life, I would say join a fraternity or sorority. Although this is not the only way to get involved, it's definitely one of the big ones at Mason. In the dorms, everyone left their doors open and almost everyone on our floor was friends. I now live with 4 of the girls I lived with on campus, off campus. Basketball games are huge, everyone loves them. People party thursday-sundays. If you don't want to drink, you can always go to a concert or head into DC/Georgetown to a comedy club. There are a lot of restaurants and movie theaters in Fairfax Corner or Fair Oaks area. Last weekend, I went to a club in DC Thursday night, went out to dinner at Outback on Friday night, and hung out with the roomies Saturday.

Ellie

Fairfax is certainly not a "college town," but that's hardly an issue since you can hop on the metro or on I-66 and get to DC in a half hour. A lot of people party at clubs in DC. It's also great to be able to spend the day at the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art, the Kennedy Center, the National Mall. Mason is not as open a community as some other campuses I've visited. The dorm culture really depends on the dorm, but in my experience, most doors are closed. The Northern Virginia culture seems to exude "I'll do my thing and you can do yours, and we'll leave each other alone unless we have a reason to interact." Nevertheless, the people you have in your classes/group projects are mostly very nice and cooperative.

Laura

Do students in the dorms leave their doors open? Nope. It is so weird how you can live across the hall with someone and not even know their name. We are encouraged to get to know each other and hang out with other people that live on our floor but it seems like everyone is too busy to have time to try and make new friends.

Joe

Large Greek population, but they are unable to become more popular because of GMU and county restrictions. Large athletic population.

Kelly

Off campus I work. But along with that are malls, lots and lots of restaurants. And DC is only a half an hour away.

Patricia

The Greek life is very much a huge presence on campus but you don't necessarily have to be part of those to enjoy their events and parties. This university holds so many different programs and events every week to ensure that we have something to entertain us on the weekends. GMU does a good job in trying to keep the student body active in their social lives.

Andy

Sororities and Fraternities are popular to join, also political groups. I was involved with Alpha Phi Sorority. Freshman year students leave their doors open, but as you get into upper class dorms they don't. Athletic events are becoming more popular as we are getting better at sports. Theater is sort of popular. The dating scene is not the best. I met my closest friends freshman year because we all lived on the same floor. People party a lot at Mason even though people do not think Mason is a party school. Fraternities and Sororities are very important especially freshman year b/c freshman wouldn't have any parties to go to if there weren't Greek life, it's also a great way to meet people and make friends. Last weekend I went home for Easter. On a Sat night I can stay in and have a movie night with my roommates or go bowling or something like that, which doesn't have to involve drinking.

Lauren

Fraternities and Sororities, Student Government, and religious organizations seem to dominate activity groups at Mason. I am a member of Gamma Phi Beta. I joined 1st semester freshman year and am still active as an alum. It is a lifetime commitment I made, and one I continue to be very enthusiastic about!!!I met many of my best friends during my collegiate years as a Gamma Phi!!! I am obviously biased in saying sororities and fraternities are very important:) Athletic events definitely gained popularity as my years as Mason passed.
