George Washington University Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Isabella

Rich kids are the most common stereotype. While this is sorta true, I would not say that it's the majority of students.

Meredith

Well the stereotype of students at GW is that everyone is rich. And although there is a majority of students who are from wealthy families, there are still a large number of people working hard and maintaining scholarships. Although there is some truth within the stereotype of GW students, it's more of a huge misunderstanding of the students here.

Mike

Although I came here thinking that such stereotypes would be impossible in such an international environment, I found within a few weeks here that they are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

James

Like all stereotypes, they're based upon some amount of truth, but there are plenty of students here who don't fit the stereotype.

Skylar

For the most part no, but some groups definitely fit that stereotype. Its sad that few people give the rest a bad name.

Michael

For as the wealthy part, i know that most of my friends are well off, but not rich. A lot of my friends are on either athletic or academic scholarships, and/or student loans. There are some stuck up students, but it is a crowd that you wont even notice if you dont want to.

Alex

yes, there are many people who are wealthy and are from the northeast but i don't think that it comprises the entire student body

Charlie

Absolutely.

Steve

A majority of students are from NJ and NYC but not everyone There are a lot of students interested in politics but not everyone

Tyler

no

Eric

maybe

Seth

For some of the population yeah

Alex

No, while there are many rich and jewish kids, GW has a diverse student body

Rory

Some of them are. There are a proportionately high amount of Jewish students and students coming from middle-class to upper-class families. You have to look at who GW is marketing to, and bluntly, who can afford to come to GW.

Parker

they apply to a portion of the population, that is very evident, but not prominent

Alex

There are obviously some rich snobby spoiled students because we are the most expensive school in the nation, however, there are more students who simply love dc and are on financial aid or scholarship than students who got in because of daddy. There is a very large gay male population. There are attractive men at GW, you just have to look. But overall the male population has too high of an ego.

Scott

Yes Yes

Shawn

Yes, living in the DC area is unlike most college campuses. You can't go out at night to a bar or club and expect to not pay at least 5 - 10 dollars for the cover charge alone.

Craig

In some areas this is true, but there are many kids that are here on academic and need-based scholarships who are not like that at all.

Zach

sometimes. Most stereotypes have some sort of basis.

Catherine

No.

Ryan

yes

Max

The stereotype that many of the students are very affluent is true, but not all are. Also there are a lot of students from the New York/New Jersey area, but not all students are.

Sarah

somewhat. most people are interested in politics but most students are just curious and that translates into politics because we're in DC. there are completely different levels, if you're not interested it's easy to "catch the bug" here but it's not like everyone goes out at night talking about the upcoming election. A lot of students are wealthy but so many are on financial aid. Most students have jobs and work for their own money. There is a sizable jewish population on campus but it's not overwhelming at all

Katie

Not all of them. There is a good mix of people here

Katie

Yes

Todd

Yes

Rebecca

James

Devin

Mark

They are inaccurate, but there are a lot of wealthy and influential families that send their child here. However every student is not rich and super wealthy here

Jacquelyn

for the most part

Cody

They are pretty accurate, although there are a lot of other, laid back kids who make fun of the stereotypes. They don't get as much attention.

Catherine

No

Ariel

Somewhat. Although there are students at GW who are materialistic or wealthy, this is not true of the whole student population. Many students are on financial aid or have received scholarships.

Amy

Somewhat

Paige

to some extent but not necessarily accurate enough to judge the overall student body so quickly.

Parker

Not really, I've found a ton more diversity here than I expected. Last year I had five roommates - we were all from completely different regions of the United States and from different background.

Lauren

Largely, yes.

Ashleigh

yes

Lindsay

These people exist but it is not true of the entire population of students.

harriet

Sometimes

Steve

Some, but not totally true

Thomas

Well, it is the most expensive school in the world, so only certain people can really afford it. There are many Jewish students and the campus is very political.

Harper

absolutley

Andy

As with all stereotypes, they usually apply to some of the population. However, from what I have found at this school, there are few people who fall into any of these categories, and even fewer still who fall into all three.
