Georgia Institute of Technology-Main Campus Top Questions

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

Michelle

While the people here are nice, most are introverted; therefore, it is hard sometimes to carry on a conversation with those who are introverted. In addition, I wish that clubs of interest would promote their meetings/events better. While sending emails sort of helps, sometimes a visual cue around campus could jog my memory of when a meeting is better than searching throughout my email for the information.

David

When people say that Georgia Tech has the toughest workload in the country, they are not exaggerating. Deciding to attend Georgia Tech is making the decision to accept several hours of homework each day and sometimes even stay in on the weekends to finish work or study. While this seems rather bleak, they are still a plethora of opportunities to get engaged and involved around campus. Those who are most successful on campus are individuals who do get involved, but are able to balance all these obligations at once.

Joris

The most frustrating thing for me is that I very rarely get any private time to myself. I value time to myself, and with so many people in one place, not to mention having to share a dorm room, I find it hard to get some alone time. However, after my freshman year, more housing options open up, so I should be able to get some more privacy in the next academic year.

Bret

The lack of financial assistance for those with financial need.

Angel

The most frustrating aspect of school is that almost all of my classes focus on problem solving. Having to learn how to efficiently solve problems by using complicated mathematics or writing successful computer code is tough, time consuming, and stressful. The process sometimes involves disbelieving in myself, having to ask for help, and dealing with feirce headaches. However, having to learn to problem solve is also the most rewarding thing about my school. Once a solution is discovered, the reward is good grades and a higher self esteem.

Desmond

The most frustrating thing about this school is the professors and sometimes, the academic workload. Some of the professors are not available, thereby relying on TA's to answer your questions.

Amrita

Most classes are incredibly hard and require a large amount of studying. The stress that is caused by all of the classes gets in the way of having a social life.

Hamid

It is not that difficult to make B's in most classes, but it seems extremely difficult to make A's. The grading scale is different in this school compared to other schools, which does not properly standardize your GPA compared to other schools. I have also felt the class workload is so great that it impedes me from making progress in other extracurricular activities.

Ryo

Certain classes have easy but very time consuming graded homework assignments. It functions as a grade buffer and good study material, but the assignments get repetitive and tedious very quickly. It is nearly impossible to avoid them, since many of these classes are graduation requirements for almost every major. These classes take away a considerable amount of time from studying and club activities, so it is vital to take these classes in small numbers per semester or stack them in one semester and get it over with (at the cost of doing nothing but tedious work for a semester).

Jeimy

The most frustrating thing about my school is that at times I feel as if I am learning so much that it feels as if I were drinking out of a fire hidrant. Sometimes, it gets to the point of where I eat, sleep, study and repeat the cycle for four months. Honestly, time management and good organizational skills are just as important as intelligence itself.

Shibani

The most frustrating thing about my school can oftentimes be the lack of positivism among the students. You don't always get to see smiling faces and happiness at a predominately-engineering school, which can sometimes add on to the occassionally lackluster nature of the student body which we are infamous for. Students are often cursing at their professors and workload and spend more time expressing their stress and frustration than attempting to overcome challenges they face. I do wish we had more inspiration and encouragement available to students to keep them going.

Nicholas

The most frustrating thing about going to Georgia Tech was the difficulty and complexity of work and how fast and how much the professors taught at once. Professors in college move through material very quickly and if you haven't read the text book or haven't taken time to taken time to understand your notes beforehand you will get left behind. Reading and familiarizing yourself with future material was not one of the things I was taught to do in high school so the difficulty and speed of material I was expected to know definitely proved to be frustrating.

Eric

It is a split between the difficult classes and the uneven ratio of men to women.

Pouria

Georgia Tech has a reputation for being a "nerdy" school because of its academics and large male to female ratio. However, someone who attends Georgia Tech knows there is so much more to this school. There are people from all different backgrounds with different interests, so I wish Georgia Tech tried to emphasize that more. Most students will also say that the most frustrating thing is the workload, but I believe that the rigorous course work is for the best, and will teach the students to be independent har workers.

Hiyong

The dining hall is slightly far away from my dorm and the food is mediocre at best, so I end up skipping many meals each week, which is an unhealthy lifestyle choice for any student.

Alvin

Being at this school requires you study more hours than you. There are many opportunities to get involved with other groups and grow your circle of friends, but then they will get in the way of your acedemic life.

Emily

The most frustrating thing about my school is the difficulty level of some classes. Sometimes I do feel a bit overwhelmed by some of the curriculum, but so far I have been able to make it through all of my classes with good grades. This school has challenged me in ways that I never imagined, but despite the frustration, I believe it will be worth it.

Hai

The most frustrating thing about my school is the degree of difficulty.

Lishan

The most frustrating thing about school is being able to understand the material that is taught in lectures and applying them to the exams. Sometimes the test material is straight forward and reflects the homework given, but a lot of the times, the test material either strays far from what we have seen or doesn't relate at all to what was taught in lecture. Having a greater consistency in course material will foster a more efficient learning environment.

Aimee

In my first year of college, it was frustrating to see many of my friends enjoying their freshman year with a lot less stress than my fellow peers and myself had at Tech. Many times, I want to transfer just because of how difficult the classes are. It was difficult adjusting as a freshman from the high school curriculum to the intense Tech load.

Laura

There's not really anything that is frustrating about the school. The most frustrating thing was having a real bad roommate my first semester. We were on opposite schedules and she had no respect for my need to go to sleep early in order to wake up in time for early classes.

Joshua

Georgia Tech is a very challenging school. There is no let up or down tome. They make sure you are busy with tests, projects, class work, home work, and outside work such as community service and extracurricular activities. It makes you really manage your time because if you don not it is clear that you will not graduate. It is also the best thing because it makes you a far superior person in the real business world.

vincent

Paperwork processing takes too long.

Ryan

The most frustrating thing about Georgia Tech would be the traffic /parking problem near and around campus. I usually walk everywhere I go just because sometimes its just faster to walk rather than drive your car to class. If you are lucky to find a parking spot on campus after waiting in the traffic, you have to pay to park unless you buy a parking pass that is over 600 dollars for a year's worth of parking that continues to rise in price as you read this.

Robert

For me, the most frustrating thing is running into the occasional narcissistic know it all. Other than that, there really aren't many things that frustrates me around here.

Corwin

It would have to be the amount of work we get and the crazy tests the teachers think up. Some times we're tested on things we haven't been taught or barely touched on.

Solomon

School.

Christine

Your have to work very hard for an A

Ashley

The teachers don't always accommodate for every type of student.

Justin

The workload if you get behind. As long as you stay on top of your work, it isn't very bad.

Rebecca

Having TA's that don't speak english......and as a result are absolutly no help!

Nick

certain outmoded policies are almost impossible to change and many employees (not faculty) are very traditional, illogical, and resistant to change

Kia

There are often times where you invest a lot of time into your studies at Georgia Tech and do not receieve the grades you feel you deserve.

Matthew

Classes are very tough and without enough dedication and effort it is easy to fall behind. The students do not support the athletic teams with enough spirit.

Herron

Campus Life

Christina

How each professor assighns way more work than it is possible to keep up with if one is taking more than 12 hours.

Colt

Sometimes the teachers(or TAs) are very hard to understand, given their accents.

Stephen

Very difficult.

Ava

Most of the professors don't speak english well at all. A lot of the professors make the classes really hard just for fun, like I got a 49/100 on my first test in calculus 3, but the average was only a 19/100 so I actually got an A on that test. Some classes with the same name are very different. My friend and I both took english 1102. My teacher had us reading Plato, Aristotle, Nieche, etc, and his teacher had him watching movies and writing about them. So unfair.

Jessica

The most frustrating thing about my school is the degree of difficulty of the classes.

Patrick

The most frustrating thing about Georgia Tech is that the professors don't seem to make much of an effort to help students pass the class. There are usually two office hours per week, and usually if you can't make it to one, you can't make it to the other (e.g. Office Hours M&W @2pm, but your class is MWF @2pm). Also, if you're doing bad in the class, professors usually don't offer extra credit or let you make up assignments (unless you have very extreme circumstances).
