Georgia Southern University Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Morgan

High school is not that big of a deal. Teachers did not prepare me for college, you prepare yourself. Nothing is that serious or that difficult that you won't be able to handle. Have fun, sit back, and enjoy the ride.

Patrick

Advice I needed dearly in high school can be summarized in two simple words: start early. I was always a procrastinaor in high school, mostly because I could get away with it, but if there's anything college has taught me, it's that if you want to get anything done, you need to start on it right when you find out. It started with my application process. I waited far too long to apply to Georgia Southern University and when my application finally arrived, availabilities were slim, especially in freshman housing, which is why I was placed in housing that I didn't find satisfactory. Also, the first semester of college taught me the importance of studying instead of cramming which is what I used in high school. College exams are far more complex and comprehensive and cramming is ineffective for me. My first semester of college has taught me that I need to take initiative instead of waiting till the final moment before I begin something.

The advice I would give myself is to learn great study habits. Do no depend on your high school teachers to prepare you for college. Prepare yourself! Have fun - make new friends - take risks! Try not to be too hard on yourself or stress too much. If you do the best you can do, then that's enough. Most importantly, don't forget to pray.

Bedford

I would tell myself to take the classes that I knew I was going to take in college just so I would not be starting from the beginning with the classes I am taking now. Just because I did not want to take the classes in high school does not mean that I should just save them for later. Taking the classes that I am taking now would have been smart.

allison

One thing I would stress to myself as a senior in highschool would to be to actually care about my classes! I think I did not take class as seriously as I should have and did not evelop proper studying habits and I'm definitely paying for that now. Everything is not as big of a deal as it seems and I need to focus on the important things in life like family and friends.

Holly

I would certainly tell myself to stop considering any other college beside Georgia Southern University. Not only have I begun to expand my education vastly from what it was not one year ago, but I have grown roots in the community of Statesboro and developed a network of friends and classmates that have changed me into the adult I want to be.

kara

I would tell myself that going to college really can make a difference. It is a lot easier to go to college fresh out of high school then it is to try and go back 10 years later. Having a college education will make things so much easier. It will allow you the pride in knowing you finished your degree, it will help find a job that you not only like but that you enjoy going to. No, things won't always be easy but with strenght and deadication you will be able to graduate. Once you finish no one will be able to take your degree away from you. Graduating from college is a honor, one that should not be taken forgranted. After all is said and done you will be happier with your life and the choices a college education will allow you to have.

Janet

Going to college is fun and not as horrible as you imagine. Don't procrastinate for the next few years because it is worth the time and effort of getting a head start on a failing economy. By now you could have already had your Masters degree in whatever field of study that you were interested in. There is so many opportunities out there and it's important to get ahead early. Once you have a foot in the door with education the rest comes easily. There is little to be said about work experience without a degree these days, so get on the ball!

Tashawna

You should really push yourself to do your very best. College is a place when you go to set a career goal for your and have a better life for your future. Not going to college is not an option, because education is key. In this economy today, you can not afford to settle for a low-income job. You should not want a job, you should want a career and always push yourself to do better. Your parents have very high standards and expectations for you. My mother always says, "I want you to do better than I did, I want you to be someone, I don't want you to have to struggle." College and even life itself is not designed to be easy. Things are always going to be difficult and as you progess and start to find your way things are going to get harder. If life was made to be easy everyone would be rich and there would be a lack of order and balance in the world. You can do anything you wish, even though things might get challenging, everything will be fine as long as you keep in control of your actions.

Samantha

Be sure to spend time with those who matter to you because the distance you put between the two of you when you go off to college will make things difficult in seeing them. Let go of the relationship with Josh because going into my freshmen year with a boy at home makes it harder to interact with others. Having him still in your life makes it harder to be away from home, by the time Christmas break comes around you'll be done and the first semester of college will be over and that time you spent reserving yourself because of him will be wasted. Go to college to have fun and do well in school, you will actually learn how to study so you do well in your classes, and enjoy the time you have with those who you choose to surround yourself with because those are the people that will be there when you need them.

Nicole

If I were to go back in time and give advice to myself I would not say anything that could alter the way I lived my undergraduate years. This is not due to the fact that I did not make any mistakes or have any regrets during college, because I certainly did, but I firmly believe that life is composed of making wrong decisions and the lessons that we gain from them. I got my heart broken during college, blown money on unnecessary items, signed up for classes that were clearly above my head, but in the end I learned how to cope with the decisions I made and I truly believe that all of these experiences have molded me into the mature woman that I am today. I could go back into time and re-direct myself to not make those mistakes, but ultimately if I had not gone through them, I seriously doubt that I would be as independent and strong as I am now. Making wrong turns in life and living through the hard times is exactly why I believe we are here because only then can we learn to enjoy the good things in life.

Juamecia

I would advise myself to have better study habits. My senior year, I did good by studying the night before and on the day of the test, but this isn't possible in college

Adriana

In high school I felt that I was not the type who would do well in college; however, if I could go back I would tell myself that I am entirely capable of college and that I can succeed. I would also tell myself to open up more and to step outside of my comfort zone--because going through your first semester without friends is extremely difficult. Finally, I'd tell myself not to be afraid of all the great things I can accomplish with enough passion and dedication.

nicole

I'd tell myself to stay more focused and don't let anything come between anything and my studies. I'd also say becareful on the friends I chose. Lastly, I'd tell myself to not procrastinate, that will be the death of me.

Walking into high school four years ago was a whole new adventure for me. There were all kinds of classes I could take, boys to flirt with, friends to make, and so much more. Even though it was an overwhelming page to turn in my life, I took it on as a challenge and did as well as any other ninth grade student. In the next few years, my concentration fell. If I could go back to that year, I would not have concentrated on sports and social time and concentrated more on my studies. It really is true that there is no such thing as too much studying. I graduated a week ago and am now enrolled in the community college in my home town, and then plan to transfer to a four year university. Looking back on the past few years, there were many nights I chose not to study when I should have. In these upcoming years of college, I plan to concentrate as much as possible on my studies because once that test is taken or that assignment is turned in, there's no looking back, you can only plan to do better in the future.

Alexandra

If I could go back in time when I was a senior in highs school and give myself advice about the transition to college I would stress any number of things. One bit of advice I would suggest to myself would be to consider thinking about taking a realistic number of credited hours. Instead of taking sixteen hours like everyone else stick to twelve or even fourteen because now I can only withdrawal from three more classes the rest of my college career. I would also advise to get involved. Being involved has helped my leadership skills grow and improve as well as keeping me busy enough that I do not have time to get into trouble. The last piece of advice I would give would be to make time for fun. Do not commit every hour of your life to studying. Make lots of friends and go enjoy being a young adult. Have responsible fun. I would advise myself to study hard and do the very best I can but remember to make wonderful memories that are completely unforgettable!

cody

If i could go back in time to my senior year in high school I would do things alot different. I would have spent more time focusing on my grades and applying for scholarships. Now I know the importance of a education and understand that it comes with hard work. I would have told myself to work harder, and the earlier you start the easier it is going to be.

Samantha

If i could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself to enjoy it and not worry so much about leaving. I graduated high school early because i could not wait to be independent. So I guess in essence I would be telling myself that independence is way overrated. Although high school sucked in many ways so does college. College comes with many responsibilities i could have waited to attain. Being younger than most of the freshman here does not help either, it is hard when they can go out and do things that because I am younger I cannot do. Waiting and just going through high school like evryone else instead of getting ahead would not have been such a bad thing.

Eric

Study more and pay attention in all my classes. Sustain a suitable GPA to qualify and apply for many scholarships. Learn to manage time between school and social life.

Carson

I think that I would tell myself to actually join an organization, to make more of an attempt at making friends, try to experience more of the world, use more of the resources the school has to offer and try to make an effort to study.

Ariel

Most say that attending college is valuable because of the degree you obtain when you are finished. Often times leaving out all the other benefits of attending college, or in my case the 4-year university commonly referred to as Georgia Southern. It is obvious that people take these years out of their life and spend all of this money in order to hopefully improve their future careers, but I think in most cases the greatest values of a university lies much deeper. As only a sophomore at GSU I have matured more than I ever thought possible, made more friends than I could have ever imagined, and created more memories than I can count. Sure I have learned more about the world than I ever would have had I not come here, especially since I am an International Studies major, but I have also gained those things in life that one holds onto and looks back on and cherishes for the rest of their life. I have grown through my valuable experiences and I am changed for the better because of the incredible people here. Most importantly, I have made lasting memories none of which would exist without college.

Kathleen

I have gotten an incredible growth experience out of attending college thus far. I have discovered who I am as a person now, and who I want to become in the future. I have learned what I am capable off and have learned to strive for what I want to achieve. I have gained academic knowledge that will prepare me to excel in my choosen field after I graduate, but I have also been given inspiration to always remain down to earth no matter where life takes me. I have met amazing people that have taught me to have an open mind and appreciate all the diversity that this world encompasses. I wouldn't change my college years for the world because it has taught me to work hard for my education and to take a step back and enjoy all that life has to offer.

Ashley

So far, from my college experience, I would have to say I have learned how to 'market' myself to fellow students and professors. By branching out and meeting new students, I have been given the opportunity to make so many new friends. I also think that I have learned so much more self-discipline and responsibility. I have learned how to manage my time and learned very good work/study habits. Also, by moving out, I have learned to be more self reliable and independent. College has completely changed my outlook on life and I have learned so much about different cultures and people. My college experience has been unforgettable and I would not change a thing about it.

Ayana

I have learned so much in my college experience that contributed to my spiritual, physical, and educational growth. My involvement in the National Organization for Women has changed my views on the word “feminism” and opened my eyes to the negative connotation that comes with being affiliated with that word. My everyday conversations have enhanced, which is amazing. I never would have thought I would be debating in my living room about politics, or heath benefits. My spiritual life assisted my journey as a college student and grew as I did. Attending this University was one of the best things for me. A college degree is like the key to a locked door. I am able to pursue the career I want or a different one. My family and friends will be very proud of me, and I will feel extremely accomplished. I am hanging in there, and will be the first in my generation to obtain a college degree.

JESUS IS LOVE

Angel

I have received several benefits such as knowledge needed to be succesful and experience.

Addison

I have learned that partying is not what college is about. I am currently in a 12-step recovery program and have been sober for 2 years. I always thought you spent your freshman year adjusting to the party life and then get your studies. I was completely wrong. I began college sober and I have continued my sobriety. I have found what I want to do in life, which is Logistics with a minor in Spanish. My peers and professors have encouraged me to always achieve my goals and that is what I am doing. I am currently in the Gamma Beta Phi honor society. I give back to my community and school by participating in this organization. I know that if I were not sober today, I would not have had this wonderful opportunity to succeed in life.

Juan

My college experience has showed me many things thus far. The very first thing was the freedom of finally being on my own. This freedom allowed me to develop a responsibility which has applied into my every day schoolwork. For example responsibilities such as getting to class every day, turning in assignments, and studying on my own for exams. College has also allowed me to make new connections with people I already consider valuable to my present and future. But connections are not as valuable as the education I am receiving. This far I am able to say college has been a true challenging journey, the education I've received enriches the value of the degree I am pursuing and will one day allow me to get the job of my dreams. In general, college has been valuable to my everyday as well as my academic life, an experience that so far has taught different values and given me qualities that will be used in the everyday world for years to come.

Danielle

I feel that after I leave Kent State University (and attend graduate school), I will be prepared for my dream career: clinical child psychologist. Graduate school is extrememly hard to get into, but with all the oppurtunities on campus, I feel I have an advantage over many applicants. I have been able to work directly with professors on their research projects, giving me valuable experience. There has also been many job-related experiences available on campus. For example, I can work in the psychology clinic. This will give me my first real-life experience working with clients. Graduate schools will look at this and know that I have the skills neccesary to work with clients before they accept me. My teachers have also opened my eyes to issues unrelated to psychology. For example, my Nonviolence teacher has motivated me to get involved and be an activist on issues I feel strongly about. I have been able to create a student organization to help changethese issues. This campus has fully-allowed me to reach my potential. On any other campus, I would not have been able to gain these varied experiences or broaden my interests to the extent I have..

Curtis

I have learned how to live independly while having some people to lean on if I steer off my path. I have met a variety of people and made connections that if I needed to, in the future, could ask for a favor. When it comes to eduacation, I have learned how to be successful in my classes. One thing that is vitally important is figuring out how to manage your time in the most effective and efficient way. I had to balance a few different things such as classes, homework, soccer, and working out at the RAC ( Recreation Activity Center). It is valuable to attend college because when I graduate, I will be able to get a job that will be related to chemistry. Also working with chemistry teachers in the lab over the summer will help open up job opportunities and at the very least show that I have job experience in the area. Having connections are important to making it in life and attending college gives me countless chances to make these connections that otherwise would be difficult to achieve.

Shamika

I have learned about my learning style. I learned that I am a kinesthetic learner, so now I know not to take to many lecture classes at one time. By attending college I am building my resume and preparing myself for a good job when I graduate from college.

Victoria

College is such a valuable experience to me because it is giving me so many opportunities and such a positive future. I plan to become a nurse because I love helping others no matter what the task. Attending college has given me the opportunity of a lifetime and the ability to fulfill my life long goals. My college experience has caused me to grow up and become more independent in a positive way. I am able to perform duties everyday that I always relied on my parents to do while I was in high school. I love being more independent and I appreciate other individuals treating me as an adult. College has been the best decision of my life and I cannot wait to see what the future brings.

Laura

I have gotten a lot out of my college experience so far. I have met a lot of different people and learned a lot about the world around me. I am a Psychology major with a minor in Child and Family Development. I plan to be a Marriager and Family Therapist but until then I enjoy taking my Psych classes and taking the steps up the ladder that is my future. Upward and onward!

STEPHEN

MY COLLEGE EXPERIENCE THUS FAR HAS TAUGHT ME TO STAND ON MY OWN WITHOUT ALWAYS RELYING ON MY PARENTS TO DO EVERYTHING FOR ME. BEING AWAY FROM HOME HAS GIVEN ME A GREAT SENSE OF INDEPENDENCE AND A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT BEING AN ADULT IS ABOUT.

Kyla

I have learned so much from attending Georgia Southern. I feel as though it has opened my eyes to many different ideas I would have otherwise never known. Everyday I learn something new. I also find that the people I interact with here are very intelligent and have a lot to say. College is important not only to become brighter, but to experience the world in a different light. I am leaps and bounds from where I was when I graduated, and I wouldn't trade a minute of my college experience so far!

Lidija

I have learned many things during my college experience so far. I have learned to become independant as well as financially independant. I have learned the value of paying for school. Even though it took me a while to figure out, I finally know what I want to do as a career choice once I graduate.

Tim

I majored in English because literature and the English language are two things I'm passionate about. College, to me, was more about self discovery and gaining human insight, but if it helped me gain a career in the process, awesome. I wouldn't take back the experience for anything.

Radhika

I've have gotten the value of being able to set deadlines for certain things, like homework, and being able to focus on homework a lot and work hard on every part of it. And if I need help, to ask for it. I've learned the value of studying hard to be able to get things right. I've gotten many new and awesome friends out of the college experience as well, which is also valuable too.

Matthew

My college experience thus far has been absolutely amazing. I have enjoyed every aspect of my college career from the beautiful campus to the many extracurricular activities. The landscape of the campus is what I was most attracted to about this school and experiencing it first hand has been so much more enjoyeable than I ever imagined. The extracurricular activities have brought me much closer to the campus life than I thought it would with the intramural sports as well as the on campus activities. If the campus life was not good enough for my college experience, the classes and professors would be. I am only a sophomore, but I have already had some amazing teachers that have led me to the career path that I wish to pursue. I have learned first hand from some professionals in the fields that interest me. This experience has been so much more than I ever expected, and keeps impressing me every day. The affect that it has had on me will stay with me throughout the rest of my life. In simple terms, I will always be a Georgia Southern Eagle.

Alyssa

Growing up was hard. I come from a family with divorced parents, and being the youngest of four children didn't leave a whole lot of money left for my education. But that's ok; I'm doing it on my own. I have always been a self motivated person. I problem solve. I work hard. I study to earn my grades. Attending Oakland Community College has given me the opportunity to save money. It has provided me with smaller class sizes, and knowledgeable teachers. It means that sure, my complete college experience has been delayed, but it also means I will be able to attend the university of my dreams in just two short years. When I transfer I will continue with my educational excellence and I will know that because of my college choice, I will be all the more successful in life. Money is everything in this economy. Saving it by making smarter choices, and earning it by putting yourself out there. So please; this would mean the world to me.

Alyssa

From my college experience, I have leanred to be more open to people, not be afraid to stand up for myself, and also that I need to totally rely on God in order to make it through the day.

Brittany

I have managed to attend the University of my choice through my academic success and the money I acquired from my summer job. My parents are inable financially to help pay for my college education leaving me to find ways, such as scholarships, to allow me to attend college. Trying to find scholarships and a summer job were obstacles that I found discouraging. However, working at Wendy's over the summer put into perspective the true importance of getting a higher education. I plan to make a difference in this world with the help of a college education. I plan to save children's lives and be apart of the satistic of young adults being successful despite poor circumstances. The college experience is focused around one key characteristic, independence. Learning to develop time management skills, important social skills, and ultamately making my own decisions as an adult has been rewarding in a fire by baptism way.

Laurence

This year i have found out what it is like to be responcable and to get envolved with my peers. As the year progresses I can keep pushing thanks to all the teachers support in and out of class and the people all over the campus are just like a professional environment where everyone gives you the respect that you are due and in turn it is returned to every person.

Sarah

In the last two years of high school, I attended Cuyahoga Community College Western Campus and earned my Associate of Science degree. Other than the degree, I got a lot out of my time at Tri-C. First of all, my time at Tri-C taught me a few things about the college experience. I learned how to manage my time better to ensure that I had enough time to study for tests and complete assignments. I also learned about scheduling classes and college life in general. I did not attend any high school courses in the final two years of my time at Tri-C. It was valuable to attend Tri-C because I saved money and the classes were more interesting and challenging than high school courses. I got to work towards my Bachelor's in Microbiology and Medical School.

Reut

Out of my college experience so far I have gotten a rich pool of new knowledge that I have never been introduced to before. I have also learned to live by myself and take care of myself in ways that I never needed to before. I learned to break out of my shell and step out of my comfort zone since I had moved to a new place with people I have never met before, I learned how to not be shy and make new friends, and more than anything I gained a new sense of responsibility and maturity and a want and need to succeed and take myself to the places I want to get to in my life.

Brianni

The things that I have received out of my college experience was life long friends, knowledge of things that I didn't know before and independence. Before I came to college I was depressed and lonely, attending college help me meet new people, become more social and more friendly. I joined the fashion club and we put on the biggest fashion show that my college has ever seen. I found myself at college, I became a happier person at college. It is valuable to attend because it gives you independence and responsibility. Getting your degree is essential in this world if you want to get ahead in life. So while I am in a 2 year college, when I graduate I plan on going to a 4 year college to get my Bachelor's degree. College is just the ultimate living and learning experience that I wouldn't trade for the world.

Angela

I've learned how to manage my time and be responsibel as well as planning ahead. I learned to interact with others with different views , accept and respect them. My college experiences will totally be major help for me in the future because to me it was example of how I'd actually be in the real world. Respecting others, volunteering and paying attention to details that was all important through this experience.

Judy

I have recently graduated with a certificate in Legal Assisting and I'm attempting to go to an online college to obtain an Associates or Bachlor degree in the same field. The experience I had from the traditional college was challenging & rewarding. I had the opportunity to meet new friends & social networks that will carry me a lifetime. I hope I will find the same from an online college, but never having attended it is hard for me to say at this time. I have always dreamed of having a degree. Until now, I never thought it was possible. I'm a divorced, disabled mom with 2 of my 4 children still at home. I have overcome many obsticles to get where I am & I would love the opportunity to further my education.

Arielle

I've learned how to be independent. I live in an apartment off campus, and I've learned to balance school with my personal life and hobbies. I've also learned so many things in my classes that have inspired me to research further on my own. If I hadn't gone to college and taken some of the writing classes I had, I wouldn't have decided that I want to go to grad school and continue my education. I've also met some of the most interesting people I know through college, and I'm sure I'll know my best friends at Georgia Southern for a long time after I graduate. Georgia Southern isn't perfect, but I'm glad for the opportunity to attend college at a reasonable price, and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

Briana

So far, I have learned that it is okay to playh as long as you can work. I have also learned that it is okay to rely on other people for assistance. I have learned that these next 4 years will be the best of my life.
