Grambling State University Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Danielle

I honestly don't have any regrets. I wouldn't want to change anything that I've done. I would be a different person and have another outlook on life. Everything happens for a reason. When I was a high school senior I wasn't even thinking about college. My grandmother forced me to fill out an application. And it's the best push anyone could have ever given me. Being some what forced to come here was a blessing. I've matured so much spiritually and mentally; and I'm humble. I know who I am and I'm starting to understand my purpose in life; It's a wonderful feeling! The situations that I've gone through and the positions I put myself in are all important factors in shaping who I am today. I am more mature and extremely focused because of them. Since I haven't truly answered this question; the advice I would give myself is to not stress off of mistakes and to look at them for what they are, a teaching and a blessing wrapped in one.

Apply for scholarships now and apply to any that you fit the requirements for. Even ones that you dont fit the requirements for still fill them out anyway. Also, apply to as many as you possibly can. More advice I would give myself is to develop really good studying habits. In college it is really important to be well organized and have good time management skills. Make a habit of studying everyday. Also make a habit of going to every class because in college it is necessary to attend each class session. I would also tell myself to build a good sleeping system. Make a habit of going to bed at the same time and waking up at the same time. Also make sure that you get atleast 8 hours of sleep when doing so. Last but not least I would tell myself to start eating breakfast everyday!

If I had the opportunity to go back to being a high school senior, I would have did a significant amount of things different. I wish I would have been capable to acquire good study habits, and put those habits into use. Also having the knowledge that high school teachers are different from professors, no excuses are allowed. The transition can only be overbearing if you let it, but if you obtain goals their isn?t anything stopping you.

Being in college now made me realize how unprepared I was, I was not ready to go to college. If I were to go back two years from now when I was a high school senior walking down the halls of St. Paul Central High School, I would tell myself to put an extra three more hours into studying for classes. In High School I never study, I just did homework and did not try to comprehend any subject. In other words I did enough just pass. Stop being lazy and go the extra miles to understand the course that is being studied. Even if it is solving problems that are not assigned, or going to the library and reading books surrounding the subject, or maybe even go on the internet and find articles to really grasps the content of the class. Participate in class more, show active learning and like you want to learn whether your answer is right or wrong. Teachers love active students. Also be more active in the student body and join clubs or a school organization. This teaches you to interact with fellow peers to overcome obstacles no matter how minor or major the situation.

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, the advice I would give to myself would be to use the summer school sessions as well to take classes. For every summer break, I would go back home to Connecticut and work so I could save up and have some money for the following fall semester. When you heard someone went to summer school in high school, the first thing you thought of was, they failed a class. After my third year in college, I found out that going to summer school or what they called in college, "summer sessions" helped. I learned that I should have stayed in school in the summers and take up as much classes as I could to graduate on time or even a little before my anticipated graduation year. I do not regret that I didn't do that because it is only going to take me one year extra then intended to get my BSN degree, but if that advice was given to me as a senior in high school in 2006, I would have ran with it and pushed myself to finish college earlier.

Shamieka

The advice I would give my high school self is to make sure that you are making the right choice being so close but so far away from home when I could have gone to a school closer to home and help out my mother while she is looking for a new job after all the recent lay-offs. I would also tell myself to work harder than I ever have before because even when you are trying your hardest sometimes it's not good enough in college.

Breana

I would tell myself not to worry so much about appearance and what people think about you in high school. College is not about that. College is where you find yourself. Where you can be comfortable with who you are as a person.

Gerald

If I were able to go back in time and talk to myself as a highschool senior, I would tell myself that college is not as hard as I think it is. I would also tell myself to search and apply for more scholarships to aid myself in college.

Brittany

If i was to go back in time to talk to myself as a high school senior i would have told me self that there are three key things to preparing for college. You need to be financially equipped to go to college and have a plan on how your going to pay for the semester before it is too late. Scholarships are out there, and if you apply then you have a backup plan if your financial aid wont cover the costs. In college you need to be social. This is the time where you should get your name and face into the world. Socializing will get you far because sometimes it is not what you know, but who you know. Also, stay focused. Studying in high school is completely different than studying in college. You need to not be able to comprehend what you are learning. Just because you have read a passage does not mean that you understand what it being said. Take the time to get a tutor if you are having complications. The first year in college is life-changing. You are thrown into a new world. It is your time to shine.

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would advise myself to stay on top of everything, and make sure I choose a major that is more befitting to me. Attending Grambling State University for the first semester was an eye opener. I had to realize that we're in a world where education is the key. I chose to be lazy and not care about my education because I didnt chose a major that I would enjoy. However, I realize now, that getting my education is the only way I will be able to succeed. Everything that I do, I must do it for myself. Nothing in life is free. By staying on top of everything, I must put myself in a position to be prepared for anything. Knowing what I know now will enable me to be more aware of what's to come for the next three years of college.

Shatasha

If I was to go back and time and talk to myself as a high school senior i would tell myself to pay close attention in all my closes because i will need what i learn in high school for college classes. I would also tell myself to go ahead and go straight to college after i graduate instead of choosing to work a full time job. Because i will be behind other people i attended high school with and knowledge i learned would not be fresh on my brian. Also, go ahead and get your liscense because walking to classes in the rain and cold is really terrible with your asthma. I would tell myself that i must be on task at all time with my studying and homework. It is not like high school where i can pass a test and not hav to study. In college it is a whole different world and new experiences. My last words would be always be on top of my game because it will pay off in the end.

Our Destiny is Not written for us, but by us. We hold the power withing ourselves to achieve all that life will provide, both academically and in a life time. Never give up on dreams because the will never give up on you, and plan, plan, plan. If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail, and failing is not an option. I would dissiminate information about enrolling in a 4-5 year program at a university, the knowledge, resources and training that would maximize my opportunity to be successful. Understanding the financial aid process, scholarships, what is required from professors. Setting goals before each semester is a great plan to follow, keeping calenders, building relationships with professors, and studying to achieve academic goals. Also I would reccomend campus housing, it it is conducive to learning. I would stress the importance of health, mentally, physically and spiritually.

Janita

I would inform myself on how i would have to balance my school work with my social life. I would also inform myself that i would have to make sacrificies on things that I am doing. I would tell myself that it would be some hard times of the day but I will make it through the day. Also I would tell myself that there is a time to hang out with friends and, it's a time to be serious and do my work. High school is not like college most of the time you will have to depend on yourself and not others. I would tell myself to make the best out of my college life to succeed in life.

Sharon

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior and tell myself about college life and making the transition, what advice would I give? My advice to myself would be simple, do not take your education for granted. When I first went to college I did not transition well from high school to college. I did not have my priorities together. I wanted to have fun first, then study for tests and complete homework. When you go to college you must do the following things in order to succeed: (1) plan your time wisely, (2) be prepared and stay on task, and (3) don't give up so easily when it becomes a bit overwhelming. A mature student stick it out, even when the going gets tough. So if I could go back in time this is the advice I would give myself.

andreana

I would tell myself to buckle down and ace every test. I realize that the time I spent idly should have been more focused on learning above and beyond my capabilities. I would tell myself that the more I learned here in high school, the easier it would be for me to adjust to college life. I would tell myself that as long as my goal is that of success, the journey must begin now.

Taylor

I would tell myself that I should try and study more to get good grades so I would be eligible to recieve more money for college and learn to be more outgoing and independent by going outside of the household to work or a summer program for the summer brfore college to have more experience of living on your own

Ramiro

If i could go back and tak to myself i would tell myself to take school more serious and study as if all the test were finals. I have realized that I actually do need to study in college and I just cannot get by as I did in highschool. I would also tell myself to read books because it will help me expand my vocabulary and also make it easier for me when I read books for assignments. Lastly I would tell myself to follow my passion and never to quit or backdown from a challenge.

Louvensky

Knowing what I know now, if I had the chance to go back in time I would advise myself to upgrade my vocabulary, because if I did, the way I express myself now would have been even better if I would have worked on it around high school or even earlier.

Ski

If I could retrace my footsteps as a high school senior, with the knowledge that I have now about college, there are many things that i would tell myself. Although I did maintain a great GPA, I would give myself the advice to not focus on the parties so much, and get actively involved in school activies. Everything one does as a freshmen in college determines and affects the following years that one plans to atten school. If on gets in the habit of being involved with school activities, one will be guaranteed to network with many, accumulate a resume, and experience the postive impact on wanting to achieve great things in school from the support of others. Also staying actively involved in school activities keeps one focused on their education, and helps one to not get into any trouble.

Location Location Location, do not choose a college only on location but dif deer, look at graduate rates academics so much more and be there for the right reasons

Ashley

Ensure that you discover an institution that will provide you with the best educational experience. Also, serving the commnity and campus involvement displays character and the ability to balance more than one task. Work hard, play later. Take advantage of every opportunity because you never know if it will happen again. Value your education! Never put a price on the value of a long term investment that will eventually pay off.

Raven

Go to a school that you want to go to not one that all of your friends are intrested in! make the best of your college experiences!

Tiera

For parents/ or students trying to find the right college , the advice i would give is that you need to take time out to critical think. What i mean by that is, brainstorm, figure out the problem, and then take action. You have to figure out what will work best in your interest. Is this college going to help me prepare for success in the future, is the main characteristic you should look for in college searching. When it comes to making the most of your college experience, you need to be involved. Involvement in the campus life is extremely helpful. Knowing your peers, and having school spirit can only keep a positive effect on your social life.

Fredrica

My advice would be to the student to really sit down and think what type of environment they would like to spend the next four years of their life. Whether it's a big university in a small town or city, or a small university in a small town or small city. Once that is realized the student should decide how far they would like to be away from their family, whether in state or out of state. After those important descions i would say to the parent and child to visit the schools of their choice if possible to get a feel of the school and the area it is in. Along with the visit the student and parents will be able to decide if this is the right school for them or not, its mainly a feeling one recieve that will allow them to make such an important descion. In conclusion the main thing to know is the Student needs to make the descion for themselves and only for themselves, because they have to live with that descion and the consequences it shall bring. Goodluck

I would first ask them what type of person they are. This will allow me to tell them on how they should chose the area they would be most comfortable in. I would then tell them to select a college in the area based on the type of person they are based on their social life. This will allow them to become involved in the school and love it. They should also pick a school based on the cost of the school that best fits their budget and that best fits their academics. They should also ask their self do this school provide the education they need for the filed of study they want to go into.

Jarlon

The advice that I would give parents or students would be to look at the cost of the university, location, and how attending that college or university would help to make their child or the student accomplish this milestone in their life. A college experience prepares an individual for their life to come and helps as an aid for future employment, so the activities and social life play an important role in the ability of becoming a well rounded individual. Make sure to research and visit the campus. Find out if the university or college have companies that come and recruit for their field of study. Regardless, of how smart a student may be, make sure that the school has a tutoring center, just incase one is ever needed. A good university produces successful and well rounded people, so I would recommend researching the success stories as well as the graduation rate of the school. Success is around the corner for the student and this is just the beginning, education and fun become one in college, so pick the college that will make this experience one that will be cherished for a lifetime.

Jacqueline

The key thing I would tell parents and students is to plan ahead for the cost of an education. And if you have the chance to go straight out of high school, do it! There is a better chance of getting financial help then, instead of waiting.

Krystle

I would tell them to make sure they visit the school and collect as much information about it as possible before making a decision. Also when the right school is chosen, see what extra-curricular activities they have and join the ones that best describe your personal character.

Channing

Parents should make sure this is the right college for their child, not just the student, and go visit the college with the student. Parents and student should just visit one college but several to make sure they make the right choice on what college they would enjoy and get a good education. When a student goes to college they should be sure that is wat they wanna do because they wouldn't wnat to waste any money. The student should also try to make friend but not just any friends. Friends that are focused and will encourage you and help you with whatever you may need help with. Just try to make the best out of your college life and do not give in to any temptations. Good Luck!!!

Carl

I feel in order to find the right college you need to know what you want to do in live first. After finding what you want to do in life you can look up different universities and colleges dealin with your career choice. You must look at where the college or university is located, what it's surround by and also how diverse it is. Another thing that would help is to go and visit the college and ask some of the students that already attend the school information about the college.

Damien

Success is not determined by where someone goes to school, it is the effort put forth to succeed at that school that will determine their future. When looking for a school, search for a place with a comfortable environment, so that distractions are not easily found. Also, have a plan for what you intend on achieving, and focus your activities around that plan. Surround yourself with positive people that have similar goals, for the purpose of encouragement and guidance. Just in the same way have the attitude of achievement to encourage yourself. While at school do not hesitate to talk to the professors. They are inclined to help someone out that shows that they want to be helped. Lastly, do not wait for things to happen, go out and make them happen.

Johnicon

I would have to sa ybefore you accutaly apply for the college go to there campus and see what type of environment it is. Ask students or amluni how their experience is at that school. Attend a college that is diverse. You don't want to be at a college that only has one group of people. When you find the college that's right for you join a club that interest you. Don't be anti - social, becuase if you are then your college experience will be boring. Make alot of friends you never know if you will need them in the future. And lastly don't do any drugs or alcohol. It will make you lazy and eventually mess up your school work.

Angela

First of all you need to find out everything you can about the school you want to go to. You have to make sure that it fits your needs, and that it is fairly easy for you to adjust to this school. College is all about higher education, so learning should be the very first thing on your mind. Once you have that out the way, you can then socialize with friends. Remember to make the most of college, because it is a once in a lifetime experience, so take chances and make good choices.

Sharilyn

Make sure you visit the school and if it feels right it usually is. Make sure they have your intended major, and a few backups incase a change of major is required later on. Make sure you can afford the school, and it will not put the student or parents in detrimental debt. Make sure they have organizations that you would like to be involved in as a social life is just as important as academics. Make sure the teachers and administration truly care for educating students. Make sure that you are able to do well in those classes, some schools are acedemically harder than others. Remember it is better to get great grades at an average school than to get poor grades at a superior school. Weigh your options between schools in every aspect, scholarships, activities, social life, adademics, etc... make sure the one you choose is your top school. Check out housing options and what the rooming situations will be. Make sure those situations are conducive to your learning style and habits. Bottom line check out everything, do more research and you will be better off in the long run, and won't end up regretting your choice.

Dawn

The advice I would give to parents and students about finding the right college and making the most college experience is I would really stress to them to plan early and take care of their business early. Finding the right college is a gamble; there are a lot of things to consider. First, research the programs, majors, and any sports and activities the school has to offer. You have to know what's offered at the school in order to be satisfied. Find out what the criteria is for the students and see if the student is able to uphold those standards. Also check to see which schools offer good scholarships opportunities or the most money. The student must find a way to be financially capable to pay their way through school. An astute student would start on their college essay; ask for recommendations from teachers or ones who know them very well. Fill out all the necessary paperwork and documents that the school requires. Do that as early as possible then submit it at least by the deadline. Also it's very important to keep copies of all documents that you submit and ones that you receive as well.

Alexis

My advice to parents and students would be to allow yourself enough time to research the schools your interested in by making sure the school caters to your academic needs and personal needs. I would suggest making an unannounced trip to the school on a school day just to see what the campus is like and also schedule a date to visit with the adminstration to view the campus, including dorms and other facilities. Also make sure you feel comfortable at the school. Lastly, once you find the school your most interested in and your enrolled there remember your not at school to just have fun, your there to get an education and prepare yourself for future careers. Its ok to have fun but you must have your priorities in order. Be cautious about the people you meet and allow in your space and never allow people to persuade you to do something your not comfortable doing.

KYLE

Choose the college that best fits you. Do not base your decision off of another individuals experience. College is what YOU make of it. Everybody's college experience IS different!!!

Baaron

make sure you put your education first.

Courtney

A student in search of a college should definitely take a visit to the campus(es) in which he or she is considering. The best possible time to visit the campus would probably be on a normal school day, and not when the school is having such events as "High School Day" or anything similar. Visiting the campus on a normal day will allow the prospective student to see what the school is really like without all the hype from the events planned for such visitation days. I also encourage prospective students to attend orientation. Orientation helps with the social aspect of school. Students that attend the orientation have already made friends with many classmates by the time the fall starts. Good Luck!
