Grinnell students focus tremendously on the joy of learning, but are quick to judge those they feel are "grade driven." If grades and competition motivate you, this might not be the best school for you. However, that is not to say that Grinnell students don't work extremely hard, but the culture is very different than high school. Talking about grades, comparing them, or worrying over them is pretty frowned upon.
Few individuals are the only frustrating part of the school. I've come accross a guy who makes verbal attacks against the freshmen class on a networking site, and a person or people who sent out hate mail to the gay community on campus. I don't let that reflect badly on the college, however, because every campus has its share of that. Plus, the supportive community of the College counters that.
