Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?
The stereotypes are somewhat accurate. Parts of Montana are still very rural, where is it rare to have more than 100 students in a graduating class. Cities, like Missoula and Helena are great college towns with lots going on.

The best thing about UM is the closeness to outdoor activities, you can be in the wilderness 30 minutes after leaving school. I wouldn't change anything! The school is just right, its not too big where you feel like a number. People often think there is nothing in Montana and why would I choose to go there? I spend most of my time in my dorm room between classes doing homework. Certainly a college town, you can bike anywhere and there are many bars to go to downtown. The Montana administration really looks out for the well being of students. The biggest recent controversy is how far the UM Productions is bending over backwards to bring Elton John back for a concert. Griz Football games=School pride. There is nothing unusual about Montana unless open skys scare you :-). I will always remember backpacking with the Great Burn Study group my freshman year to remove knapweed, quite a fun experience. A frequent student complaint is not enough parking, but UM has an excellent bus system, so students should utilize it more.

Most of the Environmental Studies professors know my name. My favorite class is the one I am in right now, Globalization, Justice, and the Environment because the professor is great and I am learning a lot about the IMF, WB, and WTO. Least favorite was Microeconomics and I am sure others would agree. I study every night, I have to for Spanish because it is everyday. Students study during the week, but not the weekends because that is when everyone goes skiing. Class participation is very common, especially in small upper division classes. I would say some students have intellectual conversations outside of class, mostly graduate students. No, I think very few students are competitive. Montana students just like the learning environment and applying it outside the classroom. The most unique class I have taken is Music of the Worlds People, we learned and listened to music from all over the world. It was fun! Environmental Studies is a laid back major, it is a hippie major, I will admit there are a high number of students with dreadlocks. It is so integrated though and you get to know professors well. Plus the program is connected with a local farm where students can work for internship credit. I spend time with my EVST advisor outside of class because she is the advisor of the Environmental Action Community, which I lead. I feel Montana's academic requirements are normal, we have a writing examination that students have to pass before graduation. Students will gripe about it, but it isn't that bad Education is geared towards getting job, depending on what field you are going into. Professors make sure you have the skills necessary when you leave, like field research methods.

The people here are awesome! First thing I noticed was how everyone I walked past smiled at me, and how everyone opens the door for eachother. There is a easy going, laid back, friendliness that just oozes out of this town and University. There is every kind of person imaginable and I truely thing anyone could find their own little niche or group here.

Intramurals is always popular, whether it is volleyball or ultimate. I am the leader of the Environmental Action Community, which is an education network for students about local issues in Montana. We have monthly meetings with a speaker and some service that includes volunteering at the local farm. I enjoy working with students and community members. Students don't typically leave their door open unless you are in a suite or pod. Griz Football is huge, we have the largest stadium in our division and it is growing. Guest speakers and theater draw a fair amount of people depending on the topic or popularity. The dating scene is normal, I am not really sure. I don't think it is hard to meet people you are interested in, everyone is downtown on the weekends. My closest friends I met through EVST classes and through dorm living. I am never awake at 2 am on a Tuesday, so I can't answer that. Other people might be doing something illegal though. The Foresters Ball happens every year, it is a huge dance put on by the Forestry program where they build a country town inside the gym. Another tradition is attending Griz football games, you just have to. People probably party every weekend, usually low key. Fraternities/sororities have their place and they do active community service, but they are not a huge part of campus life. Last weekend I went to an REI Scratch and Dent Sale and to a Methodist church servce, exciting I know. Saturday nights you can watch a movie at the University Center theater or the Elk's Club usually has a dance or band you can go to. Off campus I am mainly hanging downtown or off in the mountains :-).

I like UM muchhhhhh more than I expected to. This is the third college I have been to in as many years (Oberlin, which I left after about three weeks because I HATED everything about it, and NYU which I loved but just handle for more than a year) and I plan on staying here. Bottom line: UM is a good school with great people in a beautiful place. You couldn't ask for more.

The sports scene is CRAZY and if anyone tells you otherwise they don't know a thing! Grizzly football gets all the hype among students and the town but I also thoroughly enjoy the other sports...like basketball and volleyball. I do have to say though, on any one Saturday in the fall I can be caught tailgating with my family and friends...the Griz football games are the best and you haven't experienced anything like it until you go!
Read all 1 answers What should every freshman at your school know before they start?
The best advice I could give myself as a high school senior would be to never give up. I would tell myself that college is necessary and I must work extremely hard to accomplish my goal of earning a degree. I would also tell myself that on top of all of that hard work college is also a great time to meet new people and have a little fun. I would remind myself that college can be a very stressful time, and not to get bogged down in everything that is going on, but instead to stay on top of all my school work. Also, the best way to deal with college is by being prepared. I would tell myself to do this by spending a lot of time studying for tests and making sure to reward myself when I have done a good job. By knowing this bit of information before making the transition from high school to college I would have felt more confident about the change.

The most unique thing about our campus is the beautiful lawns and the magnificent views you see right from the Oval (center of campus). Standing on the Oval, one can see Mount Sentinel, which has the infamous "M" plastered on its side. A quick hike to the "M" and you can view Missoula from above.
Read all 1 answers Why did you decide to go to this school?
I decided to go to UM because I knew I was going to attend business school and UM has the best business school in the state, and arguably in a few surrounding states. Going in state is more affordable and I had no good reason to go out of state for the same education at a higher price. Also, my dad is an alumni and I was raised coming to campus for games and tours...it's in my blood and I heart Missoula!
Read all 1 answers What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?
The stereotype at The University of Montana in Missoula, MT is one of outdoor origins. This is because the UM campus is nestled right up against Mount Sentinel in addition to the Clark Fork River. The University has a stereotype of "natural living," commonly referred to as the "Hippy" style of living. Don't let this scare you off! Missoula is an extremely welcoming place of all walks of life. Because the campus is so near mountains and rivers, Missoula is a great place to do anything outdoors, however, don't be fooled by the stereotype because we have great restaurants, bars, and sports teams to watch, just like another other place.

There are many things I would like to have known before attending college. I would have like to have done more research about schools in order to find which school is best for me. I also would have liked to have taken more classes in high school which would have helped prepare me for college, like dual credit or honors classes.
