I absolutely love attending Houghton College. The school is quite small (around 1,000 students) and I absolutely love it. Of course, you tend to meet everyone quite fast and grow relationships quite fast. The school is a Christian college with many opportunities to worship, through chapel or Koinonia (an hour long service of worship through music), and Bible studies. The biggest my class size has been was 31 students so interaction with other students and teachers in the class is not very scary and you tend to know the people your with. Being in a school so small you can feel suffocated, especially if you need to be around a lot of people. The college resides in Houghton, NY which is a very small town with not much to do. Don't worry however, because there are students who grew up around Houghton and know the best spots. You could even make a trip to Buffalo or Rochester, both only being an hour away from campus. The academics are phenomenal and the staff truly cares about the success of the individual student.

it is an amazing school that strives for students to grow in many different ways including spiritually, academically, and maturity. the students are all positive and love supporting one another. the professors are always available and invite students over for dinner even. its an amazing school, but is quite expensive.

Before I came to Houghton, I cried about coming. It wasn't my first choice---which was an in-state public university with an art school that could bring a art major to happy tears---but it was my wisest choice. While it is very expensive, the school also tries to help students be able to attend. For example, they're currently providing a $10,000 automatic scholarship to the upcoming class of 2022. The people are honestly what makes the school genuine. The people here are intentionally here. They know they could have gone somewhere else, but they came here. The student body as a whole is serious about their academics, serious about their faith. To think of leaving brings me to tears now.

Kayleigh - 04/06/2018

I loved it! Everyone there is so nice and welcoming. Their sports teams are all welcoming and don't do it for themselves, they do it as a team. The classes are smaller so you get to get as much help whenever, and the professors have schedules of when you can meet them on their doors. Everything is all close to each other so it's not a bad walk to each class.

Houghton College FAQS

  1. What is the Acceptance Rate at Houghton College?

The fall 2020 acceptance rate for Houghton College is 79%. That means, out of _____ applications received in 2020 , _____ students were offered admission. The number of males who applied was _____ vs the number of females which was _____.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself many things. I would tell myself to study hard and always keep up with my studies. In high school, I did not study as hard as I should have. I studied just enough to get the good grades that I wanted. Also, I would tell myself to enjoy every moment because time flies by so fast. I would tell myself to get involved as much as I can. Extra-curricular activities are a very good investment of time, and they help you stay motivated in your studies. I would tell myself to apply for college early and look at many different colleges before choosing one. I would tell myself to remain diligent in my studies but at the same time enjoy myself as much as possible.

  3. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

My least favorite thing about Houghton College is the chapels. I come from a very contemporary church and Houghton College follows the Wesleyan tradition, which is more traditional. Chapels are three days a week and we are required to attend 2/3 of the chapels in a semester. Also, since there are so many chapels, I feel that it is hard for the chapel administrators to keep them consistently powerful and relevant to the average college student.

  4. What kind of person should not attend this school?

People who like city life and being off campus should not attend Houghton. Also, people who are very opinionated and liberal would not find this school very inviting. Generally non-Christians would not want to apply to Houghton. People who do not place high value on grades and academic work would not do well at Houghton either.

  8. Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

Because of its rural location, Houghton College provides a strong campus life. Most of the student body lives on campus, and the majority of professors live in immediate vicinity of the college. Close relationships are easy to form with both students and professors. Professors tend to see their interactions with students as more than educational; they are open to inviting interaction with students outside the classroom, and often become personal and spiritual mentors. The warmth and supportiveness of the Houghton faculty and student body is unique to Houghton.

  9. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

For all that I loved about Houghton, there were taboos. Because Houghton was a small Christian college, the students, faculty, and administration were all held to a certain standard that didn't allow for things that are frowned upon in the Christian community. Depression, drug or alcohol abuse, sexual orientation other than hetero, etc. were all swept under the rug. However, some of us chose to talk about these things anyway, and I hear that the atmosphere has improved significantly.
