What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

86 their footsteps (make your own footsteps at another school), or do not attend a certain school because your parents want you to be close to them ro because your friends are attending that school. Ultimately you have to live your life and make decision for youself and nobody else.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The most frustrating thing about Howard is the Administrative Building. There is hardly communication between the students and the administrative team. Another problem is housing. Howard accepts more freshman each years, being that freshman are the only ones guaranteed housing, leaving the other classes screwed. Stop accepting more freshman, set a certain number and stick to it!

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

They should definitely go to an inexpensive school. Either that, or never miss out on the opportunity to get a scholarship before your grades drop.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Personally, due to my socioeconomic status, the worst part is the little financial aid they offer students, and how expensive everything is. I'm ready to drop out of school due to the expenses.

Make sure that you have chosen the right major and understand what it will take in order to achieve that degree. College is fun but it is also a business. So understand you can have fun but at the end of the day it is serious business. And try and take extra classes before you get to your university or college that will put you ahead or give you college credit towards your major

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing about Howard University would have to be the surrounding area. Washington D.C has a nice atmosphere, but unfortunately the negativity surround the university is what everyone sees. The poverty and drugs and local businesses need to be handled with.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

I wish I had known that getting a job would be very helpful, but very difficult while being a full-time student. Unfortunately when you go away to college it is harder to maintain your bare essentials.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

College is an experience that will make you a better person mentally, emotionally, and also physically. It indeed is a learning experience that you won't be able to get anywhere else in life. Make enough research is done so when you get to the college, you are not shocked or confused. I personally advise students to make sure they are open to a lot of different things such as, food and people. Make sure you go to a place that is a little out of your norm because it will make the experience so much more meaningful.

When searching for the right college if it important to start early, search for grants and scholarships, and visit the campus. There are many school that are compatible to the student, so starting that search early allows for each optionto be researched. Also, there are many ways of paying for school with free money. There are scholarships for everyone. Visiting campuses also can help the students major decision. The atmosphere plays a role in the educational experience as well.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing about my school would have to be the financial aid office. They always seem to be unsensitive to your financial aid concerns or problems. Their main goal is soley to do their job, and not to help any student with their issues.

Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

We have a lot of business professional come and talk to students through out the year and talk to students and offer internships and jobs. We have one of the largest job fairs twice a year. It is very easy for students to recieve a job offer from major companies, such as BET, ESPN, NFL.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Parents and students should look for a school that offers a lot of opportunity. If they decide to change the field they want to go into that it is easy. It is better for students to go to a school that is close to a big city, because it is easier to find off campus housing and jobs. Look for a school that has a lot of networking opportunities and a great relationship with their alumni. Attending a school that is very socially active helps students find themselves and makes them more impressionable when applying for grad school, jobs, and internships.

What's unique about your campus?

This school has prepared me from the first step on campus to be outgoing and network with everyone. It is the most competitive place to be, and there is a lot of support to succeed from fellow students, faculty, and alumni. Howard gives you the opportunity to try different things and become the best at them. The school offers many opportunities to get internships in the field you are going into.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

To all parents and future college students, I encourage you to take time in making the decision of the college you or your child wants to attend. It is important that you look at all aspects of the school including scholarships, location, financial aid (if needed), social activites, and academic status. For the students, college is more than partying and escaping the supervision of your parents. It is a time when you start your journey on adulthood and find what it is you want to do for the rest of your life. That is why choosing the right school for you is so vital to your future. I advise you to visit the college campuses you desire to attend. Get a feel of the environment, because once you choose that school it will be extremely hard to transfer from if you change your mind. Make sure that the school provides all your academic/social needs, along with the community. For the parents, take a trip to the school to find out about the financial part. It is better to go in person than call over the phone. I wish you good luck in finding the shcool that best fist you.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Before I attended Howard University, I wish I would have known more about the community. Howard is located in Washington, D.C., which was quite different from where I am originally from, Dallas, TX. The city and the school has more hustle and bustle than my hometown of Dallas. It took quit a while to get use to. I also would wish I knew about the problems of the Financial Aid building. There were many times when I was quite unsatifised with the information/help I was given and the waiting process.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

My advice to students about finding the right college and making the most of their college experience, is simple: Stay focused, stay ahead, network, and live your life. Stay focused: Colleges and Universities are full of new opportunities and experiences. These institutions provide for personal as well as academic development. Stay focused academically and personally and you shall reap great rewards. Stay ahead: It is a dog-eat-dog world! I would advise that you stay ahead acedemically. Keeping up with your school work is key, as it only gets tougher and more comprehensive as you matriculate through your institution. Graduating with a high GPA will make you very competitive in the job market. Network. Sometimes it really is about who you know. Faculty and Alumni can be great resources when looking for a career post-graduation. Lastly, Live your Life!!!! This is the most simple of the four. This is a once in a lifetime experience. You will learn more about yourself than ever before and make life-long bonds. College can be one of the best experiences of your life so...ENJOY IT!

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The advice I'd give for parents and/or students about finding the right college and making the most of their college experiences is to make sure the school is where you've ALWAYS wanted to go. A strong desire and passion to attend an institution will play a key role in your excelling academically and socially. Make sure this is the school that your friends, parents, or boyfriend/girlfriend had little to no influence on. Be sure to aim high, and go for your first choice. Choosing the right college for you is an exciting and memorable time. You will be spending the next 4+ years there. Take a look at the past (high school, home schooling..etc) and decide which school with make an impact on your future. Congratulations on your new endeavors and Good Luck!

Its in the city. That is what I always wanted. I meet amazing and driven people. I've established meaningful relationships, and school pride is very high.

A person that shouldnt attend Howard University is someone who is looking for a very large state school with a large campus with plenty of resources and different races, be able to be who they are without constantly being judged, and where the school doesnt revolve around Greek Life.
