What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Go with a will to learn and improve. Stay open to new things and new people, make the choices you think are best for yourself and be careful of your surroundings esp when you may be new or uncomfortable. College is suppose to be a fun learning experience and if you stay open and try to get all that you can out of it , it can be one of the best and most life changing experineces you'll have.

What's unique about your campus?

The student population was very smart and atristic, same but different and very motivated

What kind of person should attend this school?

An individual who is extroverted, ambitious, expressive, and ready for a challenge should attend Howard University. There are a lot of social clubs and events to get and keep students involved in campus activities and to encourage socialization amongst our peers. If you don't possess ambition, you shouldn't enroll in school. Not every student has a clear picture as to what they want to ultimately achieve, but they do know they want to be successful and alone takes hard work and commitment. Students should be ready to think beyond their comfort zones and take leadership roles at Howard.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

In all honesty, the worst thing about Howard University is the administration. Students are unable to receive the help they deserve without getting the run-around, encountering unncecessary negative attitudes, or being made to feel at fault for not knowing certain things. The administration's job is to provide students with the help they need to ensure a smooth matriculation through the university. The matriculation is all but smooth. The administration makes things so much more difficult than they have to be and we, the students, have to suffer. Customer service is not a priority here.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Before beginning your research, it is very important for the parents and/or student to determine his/her career field of interest. If the student isn't sure about what they want to study, determine their interests, what academic, social, and extra-curricular opportunities they would like to be available at the school, and financial aid opportunities. After these have been determined, begin researching schools that meet these criteria. It's important to find a school that fits the student versus making the student fit the school. In order to make the most of the college experience, I would suggest that students give their best in all they do. Be active participants in school activities, don't be a passive student who's only involvement with the school is attending class. Be sure and befriend people and establish a group of people you can call on for anything. Focus on the work you're doing in school, all the while keeping your future goals in mind, which will motivate you to do that much better. Remember that school doesn't have to be all work and no play, so make time for fun and relieve some of the school stress.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

FIrst i would have to say, find and visit the top three schools a student/adult would like to atend. Second, what ever his/her major is, make sure they have it. Third, also make sure the have a large networking program that comes to the school. Last but not least, make sure you interact with students and make friends to really get the whole college experience.

What kind of person should attend this school?

Describe the students at your school.

My classmates/peers are a positive aspect within the classroom. Majority of the students are on the same mindful and level headed learning as I am. Some may be brighter and smarter in some aspects, yet we are all focused on that one goal which is to gain more knowledge each and every day.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing at my school, i would have to say is the weather. We are located in Washington, DC; which is the eastern coast, and it's very cold. Being born and raised in the Northern coast of California, we do not experience cold winters or hot summers.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

From previous experience, I would first tell parents/students to defintely visit ALL the schools that are most interested in, and get accepted to, so they can make sure the school fits them. Second, do tons of research on your major at the college to make sure your department of your major is accrediated. Third, make sure the college has flexiable finaicial aids services within loans, grants, and scholarships. With making the most and best experience is college, I would have to say is to always remember what you are there for in college; which I mean always stay focused and keep above a 3.00 g.p.a. Also have fun, socialize, experience new things, and network with organizations. Don't be ashamed if you have to do college for 5 years instead of 4 years, because the percentage is low for students that actually go to college and finish in four years. Last, dont rush college it only comes once, and will be the best of your 4-5 years!

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

When parents and students are choosing a university to attend time should be taken out. I strongly suggest visiting the school and maybe even staying a weekend with a current student. Always take a look at the dormitories and the caf?(s). Do research on the department the student is applying for on campus. Students should also do research on how helpful the financial aid and student accounts departments are. Going through all these steps can be tedious but in the long run it is well worth it.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst part of Howard University is the adminitration and the way finanical aid and student acccounts is handled. The adminitration, finanical aid, and student accounts are the worse at Howard because many documents get lost, and nomorous students have problems and issues within the financial and student accounts departments.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The most I can tell students about finding the right college is to alway visit the college you would like to go to. Once you get there and explore and maybe even peek in on some of the classes, if you can see yourself walking down its halls, sitting in the classrooms, or socializing with people then thats the college for you. If you can't imagine being there for four years then maybe there's another college out there waiting for you. For art students, especially art students who went to art high schools such as I did, I would suggest that they give regular colleges a chance. I always wanted to go to art school, but I chose Howard because I never had the chance to see what other people in different non-art majors do or how we could work together. At a regular university you become exposed to so many different things and it opens your mind and heart to more than just the arts .

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

I mostly brag about the sense of unity here. Also, since I attend an HBCU (Historically Black College-University) I like to brag about how wonderful it is to see so many young black people trying to make something of themselves and better themselves.

Describe your favorite campus traditions.

Howard University is best known for its legacy. I believe that the best and brightest students attend my school. Howard alumni (Phylicia Rashad, Ossie Davis, Thurgood Marshall, etc.) have achieved noteworthy success. In addition, five of the divine nine sororities and fraternities were established on Howard's campus (Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Omega Psi Phi, etc). Howard is also home to the Moorland Spingarn Research Center which is one of the world's largest repositories for the documentation of the history of people of African descent. We are the future leaders of America and we make history.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Choosing a college can be difficult, but the one thing parents and students should keep in mind is that the atmosphere of the college is the key to the student's success. The student must be comfortable with their choice. The organizations, clubs, extracurricular activities, volunteer opportunities and job opportunities contribute just as much to this atmosphere as campus safety, technology, and resources. A student must be able to know that their school will assist them in achieving their goals. Every student excels in a different atmosphere. The task therein lies in finding the perfect atmosphere for the student to succeed. The student's personality will determine his perfect atmosphere. Taking a tour is the best way to explore the atmosphere of a college. If I had not taken a tour of my top college choices, I would have certainly chosen the wrong one. In order to make the most of the college experience , the student should get involved with campus activities. It is an excellent way to create lifelong relationships and network which will certainly help further your career. Also working and learning from and with your peers can be very rewarding because you gain insight into various perspectives.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing about Howard University is the administration and financial aid offices. Dealing with the workers in these offices can be very difficult. Majority of the students take issue with them. They tend to be rude to students, unorganized, and unhelpful. However, the new president of the school has been asking for feedback from students and is working with the administration and financial aid offices to better serve us. I think that a training course that teaches hospitality skills is greatly needed for the employees.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Allow the child to choose their own school, parents don't make the choice for them. Don't keep reminding your child how much you are paying for them to attend their school of choice. Allow them to be a student without that pressure.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The administration building is a total mess but with our new president things should change
