What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Jaqweta

Since high school, I have learned to appreciate life more by experiencing events that have changed me forever. I would tell my younger self not to worry so much. Worrying does not prevent a loved one from completing their life and it cannot stop the hurt global suffering will bring. I would say to her not to be overly concerned with changing the entire world in one day. It takes time to see the effects of deeds and doing just one really wonderful thing for that one day is enough to rest her head. I would also say to that high school senior to be prepared emotionally. She was a very hardened and emotionless young adult. Life's experiences will always demand the most from her inner self and she ought to expect sometimes it is indeed ok to cry. If I had the opportunity to visit myself in high school, I would have arrived everyday to make sure I was as prepared as possible, but nothing creates a true appreciation for the time since then to truly know these pieces of advice.

Making the transition from high school to college was not hard at all. I wouldn't change anything. The approach I took once I got to college couldn't have been any better. I came in with the mind-set , I am going to give my best in everything that is put before me. I wasn't going to let anything discourage me and I was going to put my best foot forward. I didn't know what to expect from college other then hard classes. I am applying myself with all that I can give, and the classes are not as hard as I thought. Once I do my part with studying and all that I need to do, then everything else comes easy.

The first thing I would say is to not worry about finances as much as I have. The grades should come first and the money should follow. Also, you can't put your trust in everyone, as many people are bound to let you down at some point. Work hard, stay motivated, never back down, and keep your priorities in check. Also, find a job to help out your finances, but only if it won't get in the way of your classes. Other than that, be active in your community, be assertive and helpful, and act as if everything you do represents all that you are, because it does. Last but not least, be positive! Times may or may not get tough, but if they do, you should keep in mind that some people out there have it worse than you. This is what we work for - to make sure that this fact becomes false. We can all succeed together.

Finding the right college has alot to do with the students personality. The parents or students want to find a school that has an excellent degree program that fits with the major they want to study. You want to make sure you have fun in college but also make sure you get your education. College is the best place for a student to network because you never know who you will meet while you are in college.

Chelsea

Make sure you visit the school first.

Shannon

Always make sure that the school has everything that you're looking for the perfect college experience. Do plenty of research and always follow up on your status at the school. Make yourself social & be involved for it looks great on your transcript. Also make sure that all the classes that you want to take are available at the school. Don't let others bring you down or diss you. Stay positive & stay in your studies. Being in different crowds always brings conflict but as long as you are sure of yourself, you will have no problems. Drama follows you wherever you go but as long as you have a good friend or good mentor to go to, the drama will roll off your back. Remember why you're going to school. You're not going for other people. You're going for yourself.

Do your homework! Start early to look at a lot of different schools and know if you really want to completely change your environment or you want to go someplace that's like home. Visit the campus if you can to look at the dorms and the classrooms. Go to classes if they'll let you. Talk to other students there. Learn how the financial system works; understand the different kinds of loans and scholarships and how the money can work for you. Most imporatnt know yourself so you can make good decisions about who to hang out with and where to go. Don't be afraid to call home for advise or get with a campus conselor if you need help. Have fun; just do the right thing!

Austin

Visit the school several times before enrolling. Do your research. Look on the web about information on the school and talk to people who have attended. Look at the survey that students have filled out.

Dorcas

I advise the students to pick the college that is right for you, not what is right for your parents or friends. Once you are in college remain focused because it is so easy to to lose sight of what you are really there for.

Jasmine

I would ask the future student is this their first choice for school. As a student I know I would want to be at a school I know I would enjoy. For parnets Just for them to back their future college student in whatever school they chose. Education is first!!!

Angela

It is a very important choice, do not rush. Ask many questions, visit the campus, ask many financial questions.

When it comes to choosing the right college, most parents will push their kids to go to a big well-known school - the school with the best football team, or the one with the best medicine programs. They never take into consideration that their child might not want all of that. The best advise that I could give to a parent is to allow their children's voice to be heard, especailly when it comes to the rest of their lives. College is the best thing that could happen to anyone and when it is the right one, then that helps the child think positive and look forward to a bright future. To students, I would tell them to find something that is comfortable to them. I choose a college that was small because I felt that I would get the most out of school that way and also because it was overwhelming to me to be around so many people. And so far that statement is still true. If you like being around big crowds then choose a big school, the choice is yours. The point is to have fun and that will guarantee a good college experience.

Cornelia

Please make sure u take time and start early in looking for the right college. Please go to school who offers the most money.

Robyn

I would advise students and their parents to visit the college first and ask a lot of questions. Not just to the tour guides but pull aside a random student and ask them how they really feel about the school because that is when you will get the most honest answers. Also assess whether you want to be at large or small campus because it really makes a difference. To make the most of their college experience I would recommend that they take care of all financial issues in advance in order to prevent the stress of financial aid coming up short or not have enough money to live as a college student.

Jerel

We often say that high school is and will be the best years of our lives, so enjoy it while you can. Stating that high school "is" the best years of your life can easily be said, considering the fact that one is still in high school and has not had a feel for what college is like. I agree with high school being full of very memorable years, but there is also life after high school. College is a stage of maturity and focus, but within all of that one will experience things that may not have been possible in high school. The only problem is that students may have difficulty finding the right college. First, I would advise one to analyze their financial status, and apply for many grants. Do extensive research on your top school choices so that you become aware of what that school is like, and if it fits your wants and needs. Then, if possible, make a visit to your school of choice. In doing this, you will get a better feel of the environment, which is very important. Hopefully after that, one shall be on their way to becoming great leaders of today.

Jeffery

I think you should pick a school by what best fits your personality, not by how good the football team is but by what enviroment suites you best.

Willis

go where you get the most money

heather

Research the school. Don't just go online and read there website, but visit the school. When you visit the school talk to the student who actually go there to see how the school really is. Sometimes the tour guide have a script to go by to where there are telling you the perks and be very professional about it. If you talk to a student they will most likely tell you what it is

Timothy

It is important that you tour the colleges that you are interested in. Speak to some of the administrative staff to make sure they have your best interest at hand. Try to find current students of your prospective college and talk to them about their experiences. As far as making the most of your college experience, it is crucial that you balance your time between studying and extra-curricular activities. Also, make friends with fellow students who have the same mindset as you.

LaKisha

My advice would be to find the college that is right for you. If you know you can not focus with a lot of people around, chose a smaller school. Just make sure you are making the choice for you, not for your parents or friends. Make the most of your college experience. Get involved with the student activities. But always make sure you dont overload yourself. Your first year is the most importatnt year. Build a strong foundation in the beginning so you wouldn't have to struggle at the end.

Looking for the right college has to do with what you would want it to be. I attend a small, historically black institution. Here the classes are smaller and I like it becasue of the intimate reaction that students have with their professors. We actually matter to these professors and are not just consisted of a number. Parents, allow your student to have an option at the institutions they want to attend, afterall it is the student that will actually attend classes there. Students, pick a place that will mostly fit you and a place where you know that you will sail academically. College is a once in a lifetime experience, so it is imperative that you make the best of it. Get involved in clubs and organizations that better you as a person. Also keep in mind of the balance that you have to maintain between your academic and social lives. If the college at first does not represent you, then make it represent you.

Gabriel

Make sure that you find out everything about the college before u attend it. Also make sure that you're going to enjoy the university ur going to apply to.

Alfraid

Find a college where you will feel comfortable. Go to a college where you can learn and will be able to find the job of your dreams. The college you choose has to fit you dont go to a school where the class are very large if you have learning problems.

Quintina

Take the time to research, visit and experience the campus before assuming that you want to go there. There are so many interesting things that are offered you need to take the time to find them to make sure it is right for you.

Jont'e

My advice would be to look into all schools of colleges. That just because one does not have a high gpa or top ten of the school that there is a lot of free money out there and to grasp any and everything you can because if you dont get it then someone or even no one will get it. People say school is not for everybody, but how can you know if you don't give it a try. Everyone talks about living the high and rich life, but before anyone can get there the step one must take first is their education with out this most jobs will tell you what you are worth. With an degree in hand and a firm education you can have a resume and tell the company this is how much your going to pay me. That I am worth this much and if you dont agree with my terms then someone else will hire me. This is the step I believe we all have. you can't always be whatever you want but you can get an good education an stress free job that pays all bills and let you enjoy life.

Amana

Crystal

Chacole
