I am happy to finally be in an Institution that will teach me what exactly I want to learn. I really like to study chemical engineering and physics. The campus is beautiful and the school is really concerned with the environment.

I am learning to work and tolerate others. IIT encourages students to work together and embrace other cultures. IIT encourage students to excel and willing to help their students in whatever situation they encounter. Its a warm and welcoming environment even for the most anti-social individual.

Initially, I started my college career with the expectations, pressure, and notions of becoming a doctor. After many attempts of studying sciences, I was uninterested and unsuccessful. My true passion dealt with crafts, technical skills, and art. It was hard to explain to my parents that I did not want to pursue their dreams for me, but it was the best decision that I had made for myself. I am having the most fun while learning about architecture and being able to express myself through arts and model shops. Being true to myself and standing up for my passion resulted in having fun while learning. Thus far, the fun of the atmosphere is valuable to education because enjoying your classes are rare for many students to say.

My college experience has given me a chance to meet very a variety of people. I'm continuously discovering myself and learning important lessons about life as I go. Attending college is helping me build my future and form goals that I want to achieve. I learned to challenge myself and collaborate with others to work as both an individual and group.

I attend The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM). I am a Merchandise Product Development major. I love going to FIDM. It is such a great enviornment to be in. I have only been attending for one quarter, but it is all i thought it would be and more! The classes are really focused toward what you need to know to make it in this industry. I feel like i have learned so much already and have so much more to learn. It has been very valuable to attend because this is what I am passionate about and its helping me to learn what I need to, to succeed in the Fashion Industry.

I plan on getting a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Upon completing my studies at IIT, I will be returning to Turkey to start my career. Electrical Engineers are in high demand in Turkey. Turkey is making major investments in infrastructure. They are investing in green technology, solar and hydropower, and in upgrading the power generation facilities and supply facilities. There is a great emphasis on power transmission and developing a power grid structure to deliver power to rural communities in Turkey. These areas have not been easily accessible in the past. As Turkey begins these upgrades, there will be a huge need for electrical engineers. I plan on using my degree and the skills I learn from IIT’s engineering program to be a part of the upgrading, and development of Turkey’s new infrastructure.

Having the IIT experience has helped me become more persistent in reaching my goals and the desire to make a difference in the lives of others. I believe that if you want to accomplish great things, then you must be willing to sacrifice. Because of my burning desire to excel, I am set apart from my peers. I believe that IIT offers an education that gives me the power to reach my full potential in order to navigate complex ideas, the opportunity to recognize the broader needs of society, and to rationalize important problems as they arise while being insightful with relevant perspectives. IIT gives me the opportunity to prepare for the realities of today's competitive environment and also the opportunity to make a contribution that will have a deep and long-lasting impact on the world.

Charles

I just actually started my college experience here at IIT. Before coming to IIT, i attended a community college to obtain my Associate's degree in Science. My experience so far has been totally changed on what i thought college was all about. My other college was nothing compared to my current school. I'm asked to accomplish much more and I feel like im being pushed to my limits, in a good way. IIT is changing me and my life in a positive way. It is helping me grow up and also teaching me good moral values. I'm extememly pleased with the teaching staff compared to my last school, because all the teachers at IIT are all professionals and they show that in the classes and thier teching methids. IIT is valuable to me in so many ways and I know for a fact when i get out of this school in five years i will be prepared to tackle anything in my future and be prepared for my future career.

College education has redefined my life. We all compete but share our wisdom and knowledge in order to make our life easy. We want the earth a better place to live. College experience has helped me to feel more gratitude towards my parents, despite their illiteracy, I have opportunity to decode the meaning of life, and participate with intellectual minds from all over the world. We all have some responsibility towards the society we live. My experience should be availabe for the benefit of the world and for better future of the society. Being in a engineering school has helped me to feel more humble and get involved to share my knowledge and wisdom. Every lecture I attend I feel blessed and full of joys to know the logics hidden behind all the secrets that happen. A simple falling of an object thrown up to the complex idea of virus, bacteria; which can't be seen, but can create a havoc in the world intrigues every mind. College education has not only rationalized material world but also spirtiual world. This has helped me to be kind, loyal, and honest person. It has helped me to appreciate for what I have.

Hope the school will help me find a good job in the future.

In my few semesters at IIT, I have made many memories and friends. Hanging out late at night in the city, doing homework till 5AM and just hanging out and chilling with friends has been probably some of the best time I've had so far in my life. IIT isn't known as a "party" school and many people think it is unsociable, which is wrong. I have learned that at IIT, as long as you are willing to talk to people, everyone is open to talk to you and make friends. I have made many friends at IIT; some are from Kazakhstan, South Korea, China, Philippines, Macedonia, Poland, Nigeria, and many other countries. I believe IIT is valuable to attend because it has many things to offer along with a great education. Among these are: a great city (Chicago, 5 minutes from Downtown), diversity, great clubs and extra curriculum activities.

I completed my undergraduate degree in China as a B.S., major Ecology, which built me a rigorous person. The four years of studying and two years of lab experiences pushed me into the ocean of knowledge, taught me careful working and thoroughgoing cooperation, and made me realize that what I've learned about technology are far from enough. Technology is a tool has two sides that you have to know how to deal with it. This is why I purchase a master's degree in Environmental Management here, in U.S., inIIT, that elsewhere do not have such a program. The most important thing that a college can offer is not simply just job preparation, but a quality that make me to be a good and honest person that have an ability to solve problems, to discover and dig new problems; that have an awareness of what I am lack of and what I should chase after; that have a confidence to face a more comlpex, quickly developing world and impossible-pass-through difficulties. Both the Chinese and U.S. College are valuable, they build me a personality that differ from others, making me an independent and optimistic person.

First and foremost, we are never too old to learn. As the education in the college will better prepare me for the competition in career and society, I believe it is a neccesary for me to gain both knowledge and living skills from college experience at the same time. Additional, I made plenty of friends in my school life, who came from various places and have quite different values. I can learn from everyone. Also, it is crucial for networking in the future, not only for the work but also for the life. Last but not least, I have an opportunity to live in a city that is totally different from my hometown. I can touch the culture of the city even the nation(when abroad). The kind of experience taught me how to be independent and survive by myself, which is a significante part of the whole life. In a word, college experience is an indispensible course of life, in my mind.

Jessica

For me, college is all about growth and I am getting the opportunity to stretch and expand in many ways that are and will be valuable to me for a lifetime. 1)Meeting students from different countries around the world is stretching my understanding of different cultures, giving me global perspective. 2) Learning new skills and gaining knowledge in the field of chemical engineering that will help me to make my contribution in the world 3) Making friendships that I know will last a lifetime, and are already helping me to adjust to living away from home. 4) Being challenged in a way that builds my confidence and fuels my passion for learning 5) Helping me make connections in my field of study that may help me secure employment after college. In summary, while I have only been in school for a week, I can already feel myself growing my academic knowledge, my social skills and feelings about my ability to make a contribution in the world and continuing on a lifelong learning process.

Bobbie

I have gotten quite a lot out of my college experience. I've learned that it's not really as different from high school that I thought it would be. The only thing different is you don't go to school all day and there's not as much drama either. It has been valuable to attend college because it helps me learn several things intellectually and even just about myself and some others around me.

Marcus

I have learned that school and academics is not the most important thing in the world. It is far more important to learn what we have a passion for and pursue that passion. Without passion it is hard to receive a good education. Many students will go through the motions of learning the material but will not actually internalize material. This is due to the fact that many students are concerned with getting the grade and are not concerned with how much they are learning. Many of my classmates were concerned with doing well on a test or homework and never realized that they would forget the material as soon as the test had passed. I myself am guilty of this and have come to realize that it takes passion in order to truly learn and get the most out of the American educational system. Society has determined that in order to be smart students have to excel academically and do well in school. However, I argue that society has begun to restrict learning by defining what it means to be smart. Going to college is not the only way of learning in the world.

Coming to college completely changed my life. I'm growing and learning every day. I've met amazing people that inspire me to excel spiritually, intellectually, physically, and socially. My college and my sorority helped me find out who I am and what I'm capable of. I love everyone I've met here and I wouldn't change my experience for the world.

Stephanie

I haven't been to college yet, but I am hoping that I will be able to do what I need to do to reach my dreams.

Tau

Although it is not much different than by high school, it was most certainly more enjoyable. I am able to work on projects and homeworks that actually indulges me and prepare me for my interest which is architecture, one could not imagine the excitements of doing something that I actually excels in unlike high school courses. although the tuition rate here is high and I have trouble paying it, I do believe that this school experience is still worth it, because to me, life is pretty short, it is certainly best to take what you can get and enjoy it, rather than dwelling in the past and not get anydone. and also, every minute on education, no matter what kind or what backlash that it may bring, is every ounce of knowledge.

Alan

I've only been in school for two days at the time of me writing this. In these first two days, I've learned that IIT is really the perfect school for me. From the first orientation day, I was graced with Generous Hospitatilty and a really fun time. On the first day of classes, I was shown kindness and friendship by the students at IIT. Also, I could tell that my professors were passionate about their jobs and that they were great teachers. Attendance at IIT for me as opposed to another school is that with the smaller class sizes, professors can really personalize the help that they give each student, and also the student body becomes very close knit. The feel at IIT is that you are apart of a family, not just another face in the crowd.

eunica

It gave me a good emotion to study toward something that was worth more than gold in the eyes of my family and society to better the lives of everyone whether it be for a high school diploma or some other degree. Attending a college so far has been really useful because I realize I have a lack of knowledge and now I can say that to some degree I've been enlightened whether on the subject or day-to-day life. Going to college has been a source of value whether it comes to my relationships or the subject matter that includes further help taken from the professor. Since college is a way to enrich the lives it does not necessarily mean that we will get ahead but to have the finances or its help to get ahead into college will mean that to some degree that knowledge will come back and in turn help those which it came from. It is really hard to come by with money in this economy but knowledge should not be too pricey because some way it will come that college is where the origination comes from. Thanks.

tokunbo

that with a focused mind, anything is achievable.

Christopher

I have gotten the tools needed to excell in the future. The further along I get, the more in depth the material I need is learned. The social connections made seems to have a great impact on me. Not only the friends I have made to help me with homework that I don't get but also for making the experience more worth remembering. Learning how to get along with people that grew up in different situations helps to put things into perspective. Also the connections made with others can have a great impact on your upcoming career. I have also learned that waht makes you excel is only fifty percent learned by what happens in the classroom. What happens outside the class is just as important. This includes but is not limited to hands-on experiences like clubs/orginizations and internships, social connections and learning how to work well with people, and the drive to achieve what you want.

Tiffany

As I go through each semester of schooling I realize that my education is more than just passing classes to get one step closer to that piece of paper that says you are a graduate; it is what is preparing me for a better tomorrow. Within that better tomorrow, I see a successful career, proper use of the English language when I speak to others, confidence in who I am, and the list goes on. You see my college experience has helped me to speak intelligently, and with poise. That in turn has given me a greater confidence in myself; which I know will help me in attaining a successful career... Without this education I was lost, and I was truly concerned about my future. I had big dreams and not the slightest clue how I was going to achieve them. Then I began my classes with Central Pennsylvania College and all of that changed. They have given me the tools that I need and find most valuable to make my dreams come true; and for that I could not be any more thankful.

The first year of attending college at IIT has taught me to really buckle down and work hard when it's really needed because if you slack off early from the get go, you'll create a habit that can be very difficult to break. My first semester opened my eyes to not only college life, but adult life as well. Come my second semester, I evaluated my life and career as a student and made some changes that I knew would help me in school and later in life. Over the summer, I really thought about why I was spending so much money on something that I wasn't taking seriously at first and I realized that I needed to concentrate and work harder like I know I can. I now have more confidence and higher hopes for this new 2010/2011 school year. I plan on communicating more and asking for help when I know I need it as opposed to suffering in silence and waiting until the lat minute to reach out. I know this school year will be better than my first as long as I do my part to make that hope possible.

Charles

I truly believe my time at IIT has prepared me for the real world. I have established strong connections with people in fields of work/study similar to my own and have deepened my knowledge in many diverse subjects. The combination of skill and friends I have acquired while at IIT will help me to get into a successful career upon reception of my degree.

suhail

the begining of my college experience started at a community college. life at community college was smooth sailing. after completing an associates degree in engineering science, i transfered to IIT. the transition from a community college and and 4 year university was difficult. the coarse load was much greater and it was compulsary to make friends and get involved in classes and with the professors. the transition has helped me get involved with the university community. helped me network, as i am part of many IIT clubs. and the friends made at a university are part of your networking tree and end up being your life long friends. the most important thing i learned from attending IIT was that in order to succeed in life, one must put effort and time into studying; education is a must!

I've learned how hard it is to commute to/from school ( 3hrs using public transportation roundtrip), and I know now that I have the ability to adapt to the commuting lifestyle while maintaining a high GPA. Most importantly, I've learned to organize events. For example, I led efforts in organizing a Game Show Night where randomly drawn students were able to come up to a stage and play one of the famous television trivia game shows. All of these experiences were especially wonderful with the backdrop of downtown Chicago at my campus' doorstep, and I couldn't be happier in any other city or rural area.

Shatoria

From my college experience has boasted my confidence and I now know that with determination and discipline, all of your dreams are possible.

I am taking Architecture in IIT, when I choose to taking my college here because I think it is a good place to study architecture. And now I think I made a right choice. It have a very good professor team in Architecture field, and many alumni also.

Jennifer

I've gotten a lot out of my college experience. I've met a lot of new friends and build a lot of strong relationships with my professors and new friends. College has been very valuable to attend because it provides us students with a plethora of opportunities to meet new life long friends and gain an education that will help us with the rest of our life.

Amanda

I have gained alot from college. I realized a major is not just a paychck after graduation it needs to be something a person really wants to do with the rest of thier lives. College has also showed me that I can do things i never thought I could do and that I am smarter than i gave myself credit for.

I sit writing this essay at my summer desk job on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus. So far, I have updated my timesheet, submitted my application for further financial assistance to IIT’s Financial Aid Office, updated and submitted my resume in pursuit of an addtional job, and brainstormed ideas for the mentorship program I recently founded. I know I will produce a quality draft of this essay before the next Community Desk Assistant arrives to relieve me. Through my college experience, I've learned that productivity paves the way toward limitless success. Productive study habits landed 'Anita Thomas' on IIT’s Dean's List for two successive semesters. My productivity in the classroom earned me a rare first-year undergraduate research position. The list goes on. Soon, I will present my research at several math conferences, serve as Math Club Vice President and Resident Advisor within IIT’s dorms, and I will lead the planning and execution of IIT’s Motorola Math Camp. After I complete my academically valuable IIT experience, I will obtain my Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, serve as the most dedicated national security employee to grace the field, and exhibit model behavior within society.

I work and attend college, so my education has given me a new perspective on work and has motivated me to be more professional. My expectations of my own career have been stretched by my education at the same time I have more to offer to my industry. I plan to continue my education throughout my working career and if possible teach toward the end of and after my industrial career. The complement of education and work experience makes both more valuable and more enjoyable. I recommend any student take full advantage of any internship opportunities, best of luck!

margaret

I have not attended college yet but I would like to attend college so that I can better my education and get a career started in my life.

Daniel

I have not attended college yet I hope to start in the next few months. When I do start I hope to complete web design and interactive media and finish with a bachelor's degree. My dream is to work for the NRA and design web pages for them.

Sthabile

Aside from learning the value of focus, my college experience has taught me how to live assertively and with great confidence in who I am and how I think.

Ton

THe college experience in America and specially at IIT gave me the great opportunities to open my minds, to accept and learn great knowledge from other people and most importantly understand the cultures and soft skills required in real world which are not taught in my country's system.

Matthew

In my two years in architecture school, I have learned so much more about people than I have about architecture. I'm not in any way saying that this is a bad thing, as architects have an inherent need to understand people so they can design proper spaces for them. I figured college was going to be nothing but studying and memorizing things and drawing until my eyes fell out, and it was like that to an extent, but the people I have met and worked with these past two years have taught me more about myself and about life than I ever expected. Getting to know so many different types of people has helped me get to know myself better and has helped me become a better person, a better student, and hopefully, a better architect someday.

Everyday I would sit at work, typing away at the key board feeling a deep emotion I was meant to be more. My gift of creative story telling and visual media was calling out to me. I knew that the only way for me to really make a change in my life was to get a solid education in the field I wanted to pursue. The first day of classes I was intimidated because I was 15 years older then my fellow classmates. After explaining to the class why I chose to start school at this point in my life, they became inspired by my story. My experience has been phenomenal, with achieving a 4.0 my first semester, the praise of being on the deans list and accepted into honors classes, I knew that this was the right decision for me. I reached out to students to share stories of my life and why I felt that getting a college education was extremely important. I will always praise the idea of getting a higher education and hope that more young people fresh out of high school will take complete advantage of the opportunity.

Lidens

College has reaffirmed my goals in life that I had in high school. College has showed me that there are many fields out there that I could never subject myself to. It has taught me to be more independent and that it is not difficult to live on your own. Since I attend an out-of-state school, I have learned to support myself and I feel this has helped me grow tremendously. I am also confident that I want to continue doing research in physics. It has proven to be my absolute love in life. I have also learned that there is not a single way to approach a problem in physics. College has definitely improved my problem-solving skills.

Oduola

I have learnt about how various things that are like mysteries to me before, works. I have learnt more about the practical aspect of so many things in the world. It has made realise no matter how a problem might seem, it can always be resolved as long as someone is focused and determined in achieving those purposes. It is really valuable to me because, it makes me to be rest assured that future is fully secured as long as i'm focused the price which is diploma. It has also made me know how to express myself better in the public most especially when presenting a project for a group of people or company. It made realise the way most students view real life jobs just by studying is quite different from the way it really is. Using economy as an example, it is easy for any one conclude with statistics on how the economy is going to be in future whereas, real life experience shows economy changes every single day and it requires more than just the statistics to improve it. One needs to have the knowledge of a thing is in order implement more ideas.

The College Years can be a wonderful, fulfilling time in a person's life. I have been wise enough to be a student who has made the most out of my college experience so far. I have always been smart. I graduated from my city's best high school when I was only15 years old. However in high school I never really felt the need to apply myself. Something changed when I got to college though. I have been motivated to do well and I have never been more proud of myself. This is such a great feeling. I am getting straight As in every class. I am part of the honors program. My teachers are stimulating and encouraging because they see the spark in my eyes to be successful. All it takes is a little bit of effort, and things can run very smoothly. I just joined my school's cheerleading team, and I would highly recommend joining a sport. It adds another interesting angle to the experience. I have made plenty of friends by being kind and outgoing. My best advice would be to recognize how great college can be and GO FOR IT!

Lillian

My college experience has enabled me to realize that even though it is as difficult as I assumed it would be, I am able to overcome my fears of attending undergrad at the age of 40. I applied for and started school as a way to pay homage to my late son. He and I had talked about starting school together in the fall of 2009. He passed away a year earlier and I felt the need to continue on with our dream of attending school together. It's hard to sum up what I've gotten out of my college experience because it's still so early. I can say that I have realized that I haven't "lost it". My grades have not been as good as they were in high school as of yet, but I am working on improving them with each class I register for. I have also been given the opportunity to attend a leadership retreat which is unexpected. This retreat is giving me the opportunity to face the fear of water I've had since my son drowned. I may not have had this opportunity had I not been in school.

Bertha

I am currently a senior at Illinois Institute of Technology majoring in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics. My college experience has given me the opportunity to get well acquainted with the career path I have chosen. The dedicated professors, ample resources, and innovative ideas created by the university have made this a great education. My most valuable experience was an unforgetable research position at Argonne National Laboratory that introduced me to the world of research. I will be forever thankful to this college for showing me the way to becoming a successful scientist.

Certain aspects in life help you grow as a person. Certain experiences build character. Even setting personal goals can accentuate your inner beauty. Attending college has done all these for me, which is why continuing my education is valuable. My college experience has strengthen my communication skills, my academic and study skills, and even my life skills. College will open many doors for me. As odd as it may sound, I do not see my education being complete after graduation.

Arathi

I have gained so much from my college experience ranging from academics to friendships to independence. I have not only learned the textbook material through lectures but also the practical materials through research experiences. I have gained lifelong friendships through university sponsored summer programs and clubs. Most importantly, I have gained independence. Living away from home has helped me learned real life responsibilities from the mundane such as doing laundry and grocery shopping to the little less mundane such as learning how to use Chicago’s public transportation without getting lost. Everything I have gained from my college experience contributes to why college has been valuable. I have learned the book material and the real life material I need to succeed in life.
