Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Doug

Im not sure whats the stereotype ? Just kidding sure they must be right if they have come about then they are somewhat true. There are tons of kids from New York and yes they are Jewish, and yes they all live in the same apartment complexes and join the same fraternities. There are tons of hicks from all over indiana, and yes they are hicks. They run things here at IU because everyone knows everyone from high school. There are some fraternities (FIJI) haha that actually bypass rush and recruit students from their home town and are basically a cult. Are the girls hott? yes they are and there are plenty of young upstanding young ladies, and gentleman. This is a very diverse school and its a great school.

I'd say the stereotype for IU student isn't exactly accurate. While we do enjoy a good party on Friday night (and who doesn't?), we are very studious during the week. Sadly, the party reputation sometimes covers up our academic excellence.

no

Taylor

In my opinion, not at all. The majority of students are academically oriented and focus on being a successful college student. Sports and other recreational activities are a great way for students to get involved. People party, but in moderation.

Leah

I'l have to admit many of the students I've met love to have a good time, but their also some of the most dedicated students I've encountered. Many students know what they want to do after school and I think that's important if you want to be successful in school and in life.

Chris

There are the typical college aged kids that do meet that stereotype, but they seem to always get flushed out. IU is concerned with students continuing their progress on their degrees and don't tolerate those with other game-plans. The majority of people that I see take an active role in their education and are very concerned with their lives. Long story short, no, the stereotypes are not accurate.

Alex

College is what you make of it. The way I see it, IUB has a lot to offer. If you are looking for an intense academic environment, then IUB is the school for you. If you are looking for a big campus filled with a diversity and opportunities, then IUB is the school for you. If you want a well-rounded experience, then IUB is the school for you.

Jonathan

Very much so.

Charlie

For the most part, yes.

Amelia

Yes, we are a party school, there is no denying it. We like to party and we're good at it. However, what most people don't realize is that we party hard, because we study hard. We keep a nice balance, we are, after all, a dry campus. haha

Sara

NO!

Rachel

There are parts of campus, and the downtown social scene that don't seem to involve these "greeks." However, if not into this life, it can seem disgusting and one may feel engorged in this lifestyle.

Drew

IU is a large enough school for you to find whatever subset of people you are looking for. If you want the wild party crowd, you surely can find it. However, if you are looking for people who are low key, have diverse interests, or strong convictions, you can find them here too. IU has a wonderful culture which allows you to experience anything you set your heart to find; for you this may be exciting Big Ten Athletics, world-class music performances at the Jacobs School, or socially engaging with a greek organization. It's all here. With regards to classroom attire, the dressy stereotype definitely is false in my opinion. You probably will see me, and many others, rockin' an IU hoody to class often. You are never out of place with casual in B-town. Finally addressing the snobbish stereotype of the B-school, I personally have found some of the most genuine people on campus through my associations with the business school. While Kelley is competitive, the students who truly rise to the top realize treating people well is more important than perfectly discounting cash flows to the true net present value. Business is not a science; its an art of moving people to accomplish great things. For this to happen, you have to lead people by their hearts. This leaves no room for malice, spite, or superiority towards your peers. Students who understand this and learn from others in humility are the ones who hold positions the snobby students envy.

Caleb

Hell yeah! Bring back the General. We need Bob Knight!

Amy

HOWEVER, these stereotypes are far from the truth. I have only met a handful of the thousands of students at IU who are not completely devoted to their studies. College students are in college to learn and grow. IU might have more parties than the average college, but who knows for sure? Many students go out and party ONLY when they have free time from school work on the weekends. Please do not be fooled by this stereotype of IU... a great education awaits you in Bloomington.

Dale

I haven't gone to other campuses to see what people have to say and to compare notes about colleges, so I can't say.

Alyssa

I think that this stereotype is accurate to a degree but I think that it should really read more like, "IUB students know how to get the grades despite majoring in throwing awesome parties on the weekends."

Ellyn

There is plenty of immature and unconfortable activity that happens around and near campus, but as a student, I'm not so exposed to it because of my motives. You really won't find trouble and parties and so many distractions if you don't go looking for it.

Cruz

In fact, the percentage of students who gave us that reputation is pretty small, and the academics at IU are almost all nationally ranked.

Ashley

No

Gabe

Yes, exept music students, we're kind of wierd (aka. our parties are lame and scarce and none of us know how to play sports nor care to watch them).

Melissa

Yes, but class and grades and other non-partying activities are really important too.

Matt

This is untrue (although stereotypes must begin somewhere...). I think what's closer to the truth is that Bloomington harbors a very liberal atmosphere, and this place allows a person to start anew as anyone they want to be without any real social repercussions. There's a crowd for everyone.

Melissa

1) Even though the Greek community has a huge presence on campus, we in no way revolve around that community. IU is full of things to do, and Greek stuff is just one part of that. Additionally, I would say that our Greek community has a largely positive presence -- fraternities and sororities are known by their philanthropy as much or more than they are known for their partying or anything else. 2) IU seeks to be diverse, and in the sense that there are 40,000 people here with their own unique experiences, it IS diverse. Racially and ethnically, however, the campus could be a lot more diverse than it is. I think that people should know that IU isn't necessarily as diverse as it claims to be. 3) Students at IU party. Students at every university in the country party. Our "party school" title is a negative thing about our university because even though you can always find parties, you can also always find people doing amazing academic work, and people who are having plenty of fun without drugs or alcohol. Don't come to IU for its reputation as a party school...come to IU for its reputation as a first-class academic institution. 4) IU football is getting better every year (well, at least from 2004-2007!)..don't hate!

Elizabeth

Although IU is a party school, the students are also concerned with academics. The administration is cracking down on academics and their standards for upcoming years. This makes this sterotype untrue.

Claire

NO.

Allie

I am sure that for some students this is true, but for almost everyone I have met here academics are very important and students spend a lot of time studying.

Rachel

Yup, pretty much. If you want to party, IU is the place to be. It's a great college town with a lot to do. And it is very diverse. There is a huge Jewish community with a lot of East coast, wealthy Jews, but there are a lot of other groups too. You can find any person you could think of on this campus, and everyone loves it!!

Erica

Every university has its own drinking problems. I wouldn't say that every single girl on campus is a super model but I also prefer not to judge peoples appearences. Our campus is absolutely amazing in every season.

Jessica

The Basketball part is pretty accurate, I'm not going to lie, we're pretty good. As for beer, I don't believe any more is consumed than any other college, we are just big enough to have mass amounts of arrests and under-age arrests on a daily basis. And for beauty...well, we may not be the smartest, but I must say that we are a pretty good looking campus. Modesty is one of my best features.

Melissa

A lot of the kids who come from the east coast are here for either Kelley or the Jacob school of music. Also, the partying here is intense. My whole floor just about is out on a friday and saturday night, but there are kids who do not go out. But honestly, if you don't like to party I think you are not going to find the social scene very fulfilling.

Scott

Just like every school around the United Stated IU does have its party life and little 500 weekend truely is the best college weekend ever but it is becoming increasingly more difficult to get accepted at Indiana University which is increasing the acedemic standard at which IU is viewed. There are so many different options you can pursue and Indiana is not just a business school. We have fantastic programs in sciences and our psychology department is outstanding as well as our foreign language programs. Becoming a hoosier is not something to take lightly and it is an honor.

Sam

All right, in accordance to all of those stereotypes and whatnot: 1) IU students are not "stupid." No college is just full of "stupid" kids. Firstly, Purdue=rivalry school. They know we're better (we did beat them in football and basketball this year-2008.) I will admit that there are a handful of not-so-serious students at IU than at Purdue. This is a liberal arts school-- it offers many rather easy majors. Purdue is a school full of engineers, etc. And yes, liberal arts students. But there is no comparison, they are two different types of schools. The academics here at IU are incredible (save for the chemistry department, which, once you are on campus, you will hear the horror stories; it is commonly said they "don't want us to pass!" I know from experience. And the math department could use improvement.) Newsweek called IU the Hottest Big State School. There is no doubt-- IU's name is getting more & more well-known. Our excellence is becoming a familiarity around the country, and around the world. A degree from IU is a highly respected one. Also our business school is among the best in the nation, as is our music school, said to top Julliard! Our biology program and life sciences programs are great, as well as our pre-law and pre-medicine and other medicine-related majors. Don't like our majors? You can make your own major at IU!!!! 2) IU is a party school with a thriving social life. Though we are a 'dry' campus, it doesn't show (note the popular "Dry Campus / My Ass" tee shirts from Greetings on Kirkwood.) There is a party pretty much every night, whether in the frats or a house on Grant. And the princetonreview.com lists don't lie ;) 3) Our campus can be greek vs. non-greek on some level. A lot of non-greeks are friends with greeks. However, it is noticeable that the greeks in general believe they are a higher up race than those who are not greek. Honestly, as it has been said, and been proven true over & over, greek life at IU is *the* stereotypical greek life. Take it or leave it. 4) Too many white suburban kids? Yes, the majority of kids at IU are white and from the 'burbs. However, our school is very, very diverse as is the town it resides in. IU is very popular with international students as well. This is the United States, people. There is bound to be more white kids in a midwest school than other races. However, IU is a diverse school and makes its diversity known through various events & celebrations & opportunities. 5) It is not easy to get into this school. Yes, it accepts a lot of people. But IU wont take just "anyone." People are waitlisted, and, yes, rejected. Also, our admission standards are being raised (see http://www.idsnews.com/news/story.aspx?id=49457&comview=1). 6) We do have a lot of pretty girls. We just do. They seem to flock to IU. Playboy had us in the top 10 for hottest girls. Sorry, Purdue... 7) Can we throw a kick-ass party? Hell yes. You just need to know where to go-- and there are many options.

Tiffany

Definitely, I can find a party or someone to go out with any night of the week, if I really wanted to.

Rose

While the weekends here do tend to start on Wednesday and roll on until Tuesday, consider yourself warned - students at IU do (occasionally) study. We also sometimes go to class completely un-intoxicated.

Kelsey

Well, IUB IS a big sports school AND a big party school, that's for sure. People live and breathe IU basketball and football here, and the soccer is great, too. However, once you are here, you can find that there is MUCH more to IU than those things, for example, we have one of the top ranked music schools in the nation, on the level of Julliard. It's amazing! Basically, IU it is whatever you make it out to be. Also, I feel that by living in Southeast neighborhood I am able to avoid most of the partying and the sports atmosphere since I don't live by the North Jordan frat and sorority houses and the stadium, because the stereotype IS true--Northwest is THE party neighborhood as is evidenced by the people who live there. But, if you really want a party and don't live there, you're bound to find one somewhere. IU does have excellent academics, though, that much is certainly true. I've met so many genius students and I've had great experiences with classes so far. Sure, you have your share of classmates that make you wonder how they even graduated high school, but you'll find that everywhere. As for the rest of the neighborhoods...the stereotypes are generally true, and it's what attracts certain people to them every year. Although, some people think Southeast is super tame, but we have some really interesting people here and there are still frats and houses nearby if you are the partying type.

Ali

Among a certain cross-section of the study body, they're accurate, but with 40,000 students, there's a lot more to IU than that.

Ryan

For the most part.

Amberly

no

Brittany

Depends on who you talk to. I, personally, don't drink, and I know a lot of other people who don't, but make no mistake, there ARE some drinkers at IU.

Dorothy

These are not true. -Only 17{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the IUB campus is Greek. -IUB is a party school, but what college isn't. College is an oppurtunity to get away from home, so most students take advantage and drink and party more than they would if they were at home. -You do not have to party or drink. There are plenty of other oppurtunities on campus to get students involved and keep them out of trouble. -IUB is a large school, but that does not mean you have to feel like a number. Get involved and get to know your professors, it makes life easier and allows you to meet different types of people.

Jessica

The choice is yours! There is absolutely no pressure for you to do anything. Yeah, people do go out everynight on the weekends, but that happens at every and any college.

Heather

I would say that the drinking stereotype is wrong because a majority of teh people I know here don't drink at all.

Nathaniel

I already discussed the validity of the first one. With more than 10 percent of IU subscribing to Judaism, there are a lot of JAPs. That being said, not all are interested in partying five nights of the week, just most of them.

Brogan

The partying stereotype definitely has its flaws. There are people who do that just like at all the big ten schools. It is such a big school though that it is really easy to find a large group of the student body who are not into that scene at all and are very academically competitive and driven. The stereotype about the snobby girls on the otherhand definitely has a good base. I was actually surprised, as a born and raised Hoosier with family in Bloomington, to find how unfriendly a large amount of the student body seems to be when compared to other campuses I have been on. I had never really heard that many bad things about IU students, except from Purdue fans of course, but once I got here I was surprised I hadn't heard more.

Joshie

Both of the previously mentioned stereotypes are in fact true. While it's upsetting and pathetic that guys in frats have to resort to raping women in order to get any action, I love the fact that I can always find a party.

Abby

To an extent, these sterotypes are accurate. IUB students are very supportive of football and basketball at their two main sports. However, other sports do not recieve the same recognition.

Nathan

To an extent, but not really.
