Indiana University of Pennsylvania-Main Campus Top Questions

Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

Kay

nope

Christa

Unfortunately, I have known several people that have in fact either failed or dropped out. Most cases due to excessive partying, others because of this "unintelligent" factor. And yes, the majority of the students do seem to be either black or Asian.

Lauren

somewhat

Robin

Yes.

Amber

I don't think that IUP is any more of a party school than any other college or university. It certainly has that "Animal House" side to it, just like any school, but IUP has much more to offer than that.

Heather

In reality, I feel that, like any college campus, there is going to be numerous students who attend strictly for the social atmosphere, however, there are also individuals attending for the pure love of education and intention of learning!

Nate

Average for every other university or college. So no.

Amanda

party a lot, freshman 15

Stephanie

There are alot of parties, but I dont think that the entire college should hold such a negative reputation, especially towards greek life.

Reese

Not anymore.

Jessica

No, they aren't accurate. THere is a lot of partying available if that is what you are interested in, but you actually don't have to go to parties to have something to do. We aren't a city, so it's a little quite here but there are lots of things to do if you are motivated to look. You can also go out to parties without drinking and have a good time. If you are into small parties and gatherings, its a safer way to go because the larger parties that get busted take the spotlight. In reality, people are here to go to school (a lot of us) and there are academic minds about , so don't think there aren't. If you're very interested in an academic community, the Robert E. Cook Honors College is nationally recognized and pretty well known for turning out good students. We've had a bunch of Fulbright and Goldwater scholars, etc. Check that out at www.iup.edu/honors Also, if the academic lifestyle without much or any partying is your choice, the Honors College is an especially good place to find like-minded students, and the Honors College dorm, where all freshman HC kids live is really happening all the time as far as card games, group studying, movie nights etc. goes. THere are, of course others who go out.

Tami

I do not know.

Sarah

No! IUP's party life was just like any other school. I found tons of friends that were just like me and was not pressured into going out to party. As for IUP being in the middle of nowhere, yes, but IUP has tons of things to do like concerts and activities to do, I never found myself with nothing to do on the weekends.

Amanda

This stereotype can be accurate if you want it to be. Not every single person at IUP is a partier. However, if you want to find a party I'm sure you will not have a problem. Believe it or not some people actually come to IUP for a great education.

Leigh-Ann

1.In a way that might be true, but for most students it is not. At least not on a daily basis. Yes, there is a party basically every night if you look for it, but if you dont want too, you really can avoid all that. 2. Along with what I just said, some my not finish and some may drop out. Its all in what you make of the experience of being away at school.

Amber

Yes and no, though there are parties more students come for the education than they do the parties because it's not worth getting an underage/DUI and screwing up your whole future (especially if you're an education or health professional major).

Brianna

A lot of students do drink but there are some that don't, like myself.

Grant

the first one is not, the second one is.

Francine

I personally do not have any personal knowledge of the drinking habits of the students that attend IUP. There are numerous restaurant/bars, beer distributors in the area. I read about some students getted cited/DUI and hear others talking about parties. I have never attended one nor plan to.

Sasha

Most schools nowadays are party schools, there is going to be a party scene wherever you go. Academically, IUP is held to a much higher standard than most people perceive at a first glance or from rumors. IUP is rated quite highly among some of the most highly esteemed academic establishments.

nathanael

some what. the easy "A"s aren't though.

Kyle

Don't know

Cody

Yes

Brendon

IUP is a party school, but it's not as bad as it used to be. Law enforcement is cracking down. IUP is not very difficult to get accepted to; however, once you're here the academics are difficult. IUP has a variety of races and ethnicities.

Christine

No. Of course there is going to be drinking, but nothing more than you would find on any other campus.

Jamie

There is drinking, I mean it's college. But it's not that bad, it's mostly on the weekends, and most students are committed to their studies. The professors themselves are excellent and you really do get a good educationt here.

Tara

No

Liz

No, not completely. Every school is a party school, so saying that IUP is one is just another statistic

Sarah

Yes, everyone parties and nobody cares about academics or extracurriculars

Marissa

Erica

absolutely haha

Lauren

As for the drinking, it is a college. Yes, people here drink but it is just like any other school. IUP students drink no more than any other college students.

Carrie

No, IUP is a very challenging university, and I have seen many students easily fail from not going to class or partying too much. And yes, there are opportunities to party, but every school is like that.

Bonnie

I belive typical party sterotypes apply to colleges all over the world. IUP maybe known as a party school but the majority of students realize they are here for an education, not an expensive party. Yes, there are many students that skip class to go get a case of cheap beer, but most attend to their studies before the party starts. Also, going into my third year at IUP I have learned a lot studying and partying. The party scene in any college can become a trap, but you live and you learn, and you learn what comes first from your previous mistakes.

Bill

Yes, A Huge Party School. I don't think there is an irregular number of STDs.

Breanna

honestly, yeah for the most part

Stacy

Yes and No

Kendall

indeed.

Denise

i should hope not. It is a great University. It offers a wonderful variety of classes, the surronding community is a great place to live, plenty of intersting things happening.

mike

yes

Helen

Yes and no! Yes that Indiana, PA is not the most happening place to be, and no to it being totally boring. The truth is, I feel very comfortable in Indiana, PA and found it the people to be very welcoming and kind. Philadelphia Street is the probably the most "city-like" part of Indiana, PA because of its eclectic shops and places to grab a bite to eat. Another plus to IUP's location is that it is only about an hours drive to Pittsburgh. "I Usually Party" is a popular slogan for the students around campus, but truthfully, what college campus doesn't like to party?! Given that IUP is the largest state school in Pennsylvania, ranking in at approximately 14,000 students, the large student population, perhaps, is what makes people feel that everyone is partying.

lindsey

some what but not all students drink

Alyssa

yes and no, plenty party but there are plenty that don't

Bryan

No, not at all.

Bethany

No

Kim

Not really. Most of the people I have met aren't partiers and have different ways of having fun.

Parker

No, it really isn't.

Emmerson

yes, these sterotypes are accurate. As a lot of ppl about IUP, they always say I USUALLY PARTY!!

Keith

To some extent I see many kids at IUP there for the wrong reason. However there are the select few who are more academically conscience.
