The majority of students at Ithaca are white and middle-class. Last year, Ithaca had their highest percentage of ALANA(African American, Latino/a, Asian American and Native American) students which was around 17{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}. That being said, minorities generally feel out of place at this school. However, students are very accepting of other cultures for the most part and I've made a bunch of friends here. The campus as a whole is politically aware. We've had Occupy Ithaca on campus. Many students are from the upstate area. If not, they're generally from the surrounding states. It's hard to label but if there were only four tables in the dining hall, one of them would definitely be student athletes/jocks. It's kind of hard to place labels on each table since many don't fit a label besides one of their own race.

Ithaca is an extremely accepting community, with a very high number of LGBT students here. Before coming here I have never experienced such welcoming and understanding from such a large group. However, because it is so dynamic, a lot of people tend to be overly politically correct and that can get on my nerves quite often.

Shannon

As I mentioned previously, there are many different types of students at Ithaca. However, I would say that most people I came into contact with were pretty liberal. There were conservatives, but I'm not sure how welcome they felt. Ithaca was very tolerant and accepting of LGBT students. Most students are white, however, and many came from comfortable, if not privileged, backgrounds. There was a small but tight-knit community of international students. I think overall though it was a very welcoming and accepting place for people of all backgrounds.

Laura

Who would feel out of place at IC?

Laura

A student tells us who would feel out of place at IC

Laura

A student's opinion on who wouldn't fit in at IC

Mike

There are about five black kids total at IC, there is almost no diversity at all. For the most part everyone is basically white and middle class. A student who is really into sports may feel out of place, because although there are a few kids who you could hang out with, athletes tend to only hang out with members of their own team. The wrestling team was seen around campus everywhere together and was basically an exclusive club. Most kids tend to be from either New York or New Jersey. The student body as a whole is very left of center.

Jill

Lots of LGBT- but everyone is great! Much greater white population but diversity is increasing. Special programs and often financial assistance for ALANA students. I ahve friends of all race and religion- but the college does have a greater white population so more friends are caucasian. IC is VERY Liberal! Although I am moderate in my views- the school is extremely liberal with all politics professors being Democrat. Students do come from all financial back grounds. Yes there are some "uppities" but many come from very large families with little assistance at home and work a lot of hours to keep up.

Dan

Amazing high percentage of attractive and well-put-together men and women (far more women). A nice blend of cultures and ethnic backgrounds and overall a very friendly and outgoing student body.

Josh

Ithaca claims to be very diverse, but really isn't that diverse. Everyone is respectful to everyone elses culture and beliefs there.

Greg

IC is not very diverse. Mostly white upper middle to upper class students. There are minority groups and clubs to help promote diversity but its still mostly a white school... Different groups interact extremely well though because of the education and willingness of student groups to work and learn together. Students are very politically active, with a great communications school and journalism programs, there is a lot of reporting and discussions of politics both US and world. For the most part everything gets a leftist slant to it.

Ryan

There are LOTS OF JOCKS here. I wouldn't say that there are any kinds of students who wouldn't feel welcome here. The one thing I would strongly emphasize about the campus population is that it is not diverse. Everyone is pretty much from the middle to upper-class and white. Ithaca advertises that it is really diverse, but this is just not the case.

Sam

The student body at Ithaca College is extremely diverse in every way except racially. A majority of the population is white, but the college's admissions office goes to extreme lengths to try to attract a larger minority group to the college. Religiously Ithaca is all over the place. You can even find a Kosher Kitchen in one of the dining halls. The chapel on campus is a multi-use facility and is home to many religious services held weekly. Ithaca has a quite prominent LGBT community, and the campus community as a whole is very accepting. Students of all types and background interact throughout the school, and beyond sports teams I would definitely say that Ithaca is not very clickish. While a large majority of the population would consider themselves liberal, there is a small fraction of campus republicans who tend to be better at mobilizing then their counterparts. Ithaca College is a community of students whose goal in life is definitely not to get rich, but is much more about simply learning how to do something they love.

Jennifer

There are a lot of diverse groups on campus. There is a large LGBT community, a very active community centered around ALANA issues on campus, and several communities serving students of various religions or faiths. Politically is mostly left-wing, and every now and again there are rallies protesting one or another social ills, political figures, or what have you. This creates a campus that is alive with discussion and debate, which makes the college experience that much more rich and full. There are, however, a large section of the student population that is not involved in these issues, and the college's wide array of sports teams, fun clubs (anything from a Knitting Circle to chess club to culinary arts society), or community service programs give those students who do not wish to become politically involved on campus a way to be involved as they see fit. There really is something for everyone at IC, and students of varying interests and backgrounds often interact through one or another of the programs at the college. The student body is overwhelmingly progressive minded, so hardline conservative students may not feel as at home on campus as elsewhere, but those communities still exist and are just as welcome as any other. Most students are wealthier, from the Northeastern United States (though there are a lot of International students at IC) and tend to be white. IC tends to be casual, with a hooded sweatshirt and jeans being the most commonly seen ensemble, though miniskirt with Ugg boots is also popular and widely ridiculed.

Alissa

Ithaca is gorges. Ithaca is also white. There are a lot of students who are involved in organizations or groups that encourage integration and diversity. BUT I think that there are a number of racial and even religious minorities that might feel out of place not just at school, but also in the town itself. Students wear whatever they want to class. There are some people who I've never seen in anything other than their pajamas and then there are some people who wear really nice clothes. The most amount of interaction between different types of students is probably in clubs and organizations, but I guess that every student group attracts a certain demographic. The real interaction between students is very seperated not along racial lines as much as social lines. I don't mean class, I mean who people hang out with. The football players, the theater kids, the Parkies (people majoring in some form of communications) etc... I would say that a majority of students come from the East Coast. When it comes down to it, there is some diversity, but it really doens't take a genius to figure out that most students are from white middle to upper-middle class families. In terms of political affliations I think that about 80{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the studens wave a giant flag in the liberal pride parade. I mostly spend time with the theater kids so the only discussion about jobs usually revolves around their future careers as waiters.

Shawn

People are rich but a lot of people dress down for class and no one will give you weird looks. I wear sweats pretty much every day. On the whole everyone is white and middle class.

Heather

Ithaca is a very diverse campus. There are a bunch of student organizations that hold alot of events on campus. I feel that every student, regardless of race, feels welcome on campus. Everyone, well most everyone, is kind and welcoming and willing to help. Same as high school, you have those groups of people. The greatest thing is seeing that all change. Working on campus for the last 3.5 years, has allowed me to work many student orientations. Lets just say at the end of their first year at Ithaca, most of them are not in those groups and have a large group of friends, instead of just 5 or 6. The students finanical backgrounds range. You have the students that are able to attend because of loans or scholarships and then you have students whose parent's are rich. We have even had celebrity bros/sisters here. Most of the people on campus are liberal. As far as planning for the future, most students are just trying to get through their work load from classes. I dont think they plan for their future until then hit the spring semester of their senior year.

Ashley

There have been a few rallies revolving around race issues. I have read in the Ithacan about students who have been discriminated against and whatnot. Most students where jeans or sweats to class. Freshmen are the ones who get dressed-up but upper-classmen usually dressed down.

Reese

Ethnically, the student body is not very diverse. However, there is a lot of diversity in personalities and groups. One of the best things about college is that there's no cliques. This remains true in Ithaca-there's a place for everyone...you just need to be willing to find that group.

Abbie

now is much more racially diverse and accepting than it used to be, there were a lot of racially charged incidents that occurred when I was there that lead to a more cohesive campus. We are pretty much all bleeding heart liberals, and conservatives are definitely the minority there is a definite gap between the financial backgrounds of the students. there is the extreme rich and the extremely needy

Ashley

Not very diverse. Very different in terms of sexuality. Very artistic people.

Kyle

it's split in 3: rich long islanders, working class central new yorkers, and then all the out of staters.

KJ

Students are predominantly left of center, mostly because it's very fashionable, and bumper stickers are easier to digest and cleave to ideologically than are actual political principles. I call the majority of the student body "bumper-sticker liberals" for this reason. They hate George Bush and the Iraq War, but they can't tell me why, exactly, they're so definitively opposed to those things. Uninformed. Yes, that's the term. The dress code is a divided landscape. Ithaca is either dressy, upscale, and fashion-forward, or sweats, slippers, and T-shirts. Not many students fall in between. I'm also dying to find out who drives the Mercedes E-class in the Hilliard parking lot. Because I'd like to possibly beat some sense into the mommy and daddy that bought their dearest a Mercedes before Junior was even old enough to sign the lease on a rental car or have his own health insurance.

Andrew

Ithaca's student body is very diverse. You'll find tons of different viewpoints no matter what your outlook on life is. It is a very liberal school, but even as a moderate conservative, I don't feel shut-out.

Jerry

The Ithaca student body is mostly very welcoming to all types of people. There is a large LGBT community who are often active on campus, with many activities available to help others understand and accept them, which is not too hard in Ithaca. There aren't too many cliques or groups like that, most students can interact with people they usually don't hang out with and still have a good time. I would say most of the student population comes from an upper-middle class background, with the occasional student going to school on a scholarship. The campus is extremely active in politics, mostly on the liberal side. There are many groups devoted to humanitarian aid and helping those less fortunate, and during election time there are a lot of people trying to get the students active in the voting process. The only problem with the political climate on campus is that those of a more conservative background might feel alienated. There is a group for Republicans on campus, but it is small and I don't think they're well liked. Religious life is a bit hard if you're not Catholic, Protestant, or Jewish. There are chaplains for those religions, but not for others. The town itself has a Buddhist monestery, so if you are Buddhist it is a very welcoming environment. There are a lot of atheists too, however. Because the campus is so liberal, there aren't many religious students around. I once had a really bad experience where I was put in an awkward position: I was supposed to be in a skit for a friend for her class, but what I was supposed to do was very blasphemous. Basically I was supposed to be Mary Magdalene with Christ, and we were supposed to make it clear that they were to have sex. I was extremely uncomfortable and had a bit of a religious meltdown, but I got through it okay and actually probably richer for it.

Lauren

I feel like a lot of the students here are very seperated from each other. There are lots of cliques that form friendships and those stay that way for a long time. The friendships that are made however, hold strong from freshman year on. I can't think of a single person that could possibly feel out of place at Ithaca. There are lots of students who are very liberal, and a few that are very conservative. Those in the middle usually end up on the left, and the conflicts between the parties are VERY entertaining! Friends seem to talk a lot more about the things they are doing outside of sitting in a classroom a lot more than their actual classes and grades.
