Ithaca College Top Questions

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Alex

The worst thing about my school is probably the ability to pick classes for an upcoming semester. If you are a freshman or sophomore, you have the last time to pick classes and don't get the classes that you would have liked.

Nicole

Ithaca is home to many hills. The landscape of Ithaca College, then, is home to hills as well. This results in the school's campus having a lot of stairs which make the multiple walks across campus very tiring. There's also the issue with the weather where Ithaca, New York doesn't seem to understand what season it's supposed to be so the area goes through all four seasons in one day.

Matthew

The cost was difficult to cope with at first, but the financial aid officers were very helpful and offered insight into many valuable financial resources.

Becky

Ithaca College is on a hill. This means that you will always be walking up or down a hill, no matter where you go. If you don't like stairs or inclines, this is not a good school for you! However, there is only the freshman 5, not 15 because of all these stairs.

Emily

I think the worst thing about Ithaca College is the tuition. It is very expensive, and it is going up by over $5,000 next year. I understand that it has to be high because it's a private university and gets no state funding, but I just think that if we pay this much money, we should at least have better dining services, more updated dorms, and better parking options for bringing a car to school. Other than that, I like it!

Giuseppina

Ithaca College’s education comes with a hefty price tag and a closet-full of fleece worn most of the school year. The hard winters and big price tag is what turns some students away.

Taylor

The lack of social outlets. There are few establishments that cater to the under 21 crowd, and there is little to do on campus after eight pm.

Cynthia

At the base of Cayuga Lake, one of New York's Finger Lakes, Ithaca is the coldest place I have ever been. The wind blows down from the north and slices through you.

Megan

The only negative aspect of this school is the fact that though it is advertised as a school which supports diversity of opinion, it is overwhelmingly liberal and students with conservative views can be made to feel out-of-place.

Kurt

The worst thing about Ithaca is the price. The cost of attendance along with other fees that the school charges for things such as parking, etc. strain the middle class student and make it hard to pay for school. It is tough to constantly have to worry about paying for school because it limits my ability to pay for other things that I might enjoy outside of my schooling costs.

Brittany

The fact that there really is no diversity at Ithaca is a problem to me. The college is a private school, and because of that it attracks mostly white, middle class students. I wish that there was more of a cultural difference because college is really the only time you are going to get to know people on such a personal level, and learning about different cultures and customs would be interesting.

Danielle

Ithaca College over-enrolled for the 2009-2010 academic school year and this institution was not well prepared to accommodate such a large incoming class. Also the campus is not very wheel-chair accessible.

Brian

To be honest, there aren't many things that I find unsatisfying with Ithaca College as far as academics go. Many people find the weather during the winter to be harsh, as it it located in the North East and located just south of the snow belt, getting a fair amount of the snow in the winter. To me, the snow just creates a beautiful powdery blanket that turns Ithaca into a winter wonderland.

Madeline

I think that the worst thing about my school is amount of financial aid available to middle class citizens. There is plenty for people that have very poor economic status, but for the ones that may need a bit of a leg up there is not a lot of wiggle room to get more money. You have to try to go after the scholarships instead.

Emma

The worst thing about Ithaca is the lack of easy access to places off campus. If you do not have a car you are at the mercy of the buses, which are owned by Cornell and definitely cater to their students. To get to the grocery store by bus is a thirty to forty five minute bus ride, whereas you could drive there in ten minutes. And while it is possible to walk places, the walk back up the hill to campus is brutal.

Mary

I find it difficult to be a political minority on campus, since the political views of the majority of the campus are so widely publicized. Also, the cost of tuition also leaves me with a lot of guilt (and gratitude!) towards my parents. The campus has recently gotten more crowded, too, because they accepted a lot more freshman this year, and I believe that it has led to food of a lesser quality.

Kathleen

Though the area Ithaca College is located in is great, there isn't anywhere close by if you want a change of scene. The town of Ithaca and near by Cornell are eccentric, interesting communities, but there are no large cities near by if you want exposure to a more metropolitan area.

Edward

The low level of racial diversity. They claim to be diverse and are in comparison with many colleges of similar size and orientation, but there is still a noticable imbalance.

Maggie

cost, because it cost a lot to attend college

Jennifer

There is almost nothing to do off campus, especially when its cold. And it stays cold for a very long time. Theres a mall nearby but its tiny and only worth a trip if you need something specific. Theres some hiking but its really only something to do in the summer, since the good trails are closed in the winter. There aren't house parties to go to in the winter since no one wants to walk that far in the cold. Everything is far away and it's difficult to get by without a car.

Rebekah

Some of the teachers don't seem to expect a lot from the students. I came from a program in high school where a lot of effort was expected from everyone, and here I feel like I put a lot more effort into my work than many other people in my classes.

Sam

The fact that it is freezing half the year, and the school sometimes confuses cheapness with sustainability. They are proud of the fact that instead of buying new furniture they simply restore the old couches, which is nice for the enviroment but not so comfy.

Daniel

It is more than three hours from New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Buffalo, and Albany. This makes it tough to have any type of internship with a big time company unless they are in the area.

Ashlee

The cost of the school and extra costs (cable, electric, internet) became a burden after the first year of school.
