What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Nicole

Before coming here, I wish I had known more about how tiring the walks across campus would be. However, the walks across campus will only help me out in the long run as they provide me with a workout that I would not be able to get in the college's fitness center. If anything, I wish I knew which type of shoe was the best for wearing around campus.

danielle

I wish I would have known that in the Exploratory program you cannot get into a lot of the classes because they are reserved for students of a particular major.

Christopher

I wanted to know more about the majors that this campus offered. When choosing my school, I blindly picked this one out of more than ten schools that accepted me because I had a lack of planning. I didn't really feel that my choice as a Biology major would fit my interests so I am dealt with the tedious teaching format of science. On another note, managing finance is not up to me, but my parents who have payed for my tuition would have liked to know more about the amount of tuition that they use from Sallie Mae.

That it's crucial to balance your social life along with your academic life. It's almost scary how easy it is to make the mistake of investing too much time in either one which can lead to future difficulties. It's good to have both during your freshman year. Freshman year is a crucial time to meet people, start relationships and find the right group of friends. If you miss out on these starts, you may be missing out on lots of fun, bonding moments. But it's also a crucial time to set your GPA off right. You don't want to be partying too much and letting your grades slip, landing you a sweet spot on the academic probation list. It doesn't even sound pretty-- academic probation is when you're basically suspended from choosing classes for next semester, dropping or adding any classes, possibly needing to meet with the dean of your school or even repeating classes (and your parents get a letter) because your grades aren't meeting your major's requirements. It's not something you ever want to experience, so beware!

Jamie

I wish I had known more about financial aid options before I came to this school. My family is paying for a lot of expensives out of pocket and I had to take on several jobs during my second year of school. I wish the college provided more opportunities on-campus and off-campus to earn money that is used for tuition or for personal expenses.

Andrew

That it was better than I thought it would be.

Jeremy

Before attending Ithaca College, I wish I had known what to bring. You don't want to take too much stuff to college, but you also don't want to forget many important things. I didn't really know what the weather was going to be like, being that I'm from the west coast, and it was very surprising to me the way the weather changes almost daily and fairly quickly. I don't think college life was much of a shock for me, but it was definitely a new experience.

Amelia

The only regret I have about making my decision to come to Ithaca is the amount of money I have paid to get here, but I'm sure I've been reimbursed in valuable experience. I wish I had known more about the musical opportunities in the community so I could have become involved sooner, but the extra practice time was much needed, I'm sure. Otherwise, I expected nothing less of the college and having lived an hour from the campus for my entire childhood, I was prepared for the long, cold winter.

Kristin

Before I came to school, I wish someone would have told me that it is ok to relax and unwind once in a while. I am a member of many clubs and I have a difficult courseload so I often find it difficult to take an hour to "chill". College is stressful as due dates for exams, papers, and group projects. are present all semester long. However, the best thing sometimes is to just get a good night's sleep, go out to eat with a group of friends, or take a deep breath.

Aubrie

Before I came to this school, I wish I had known how oddly time seems to work. At college, what seemed like mere days felt more like weeks or months. Relationships I developed with people transformed quickly which greatly helped my transition away from home.

Kurt

I wish I had known how demanding playing collegiate athletics would be, how to bargain for my tuition with the school, that most students were from wealthy families, and how limited the weekend social life was.

Kristin

Kelly

I wish I had known how much it snows in Ithaca. Get a really good pair of boots before you go there!

Rebekah

Jessica

Ithaca is very cold and windy in the winter and because of the lake effect it tends to last a while. Also first year programs are really helpful for freshmen to make friends that last a lifetime.

dana

that it snows every single day in the winter

I wish that I had known that the majority of my friends would either transfer, change for the worse, and how much stress would be put on the students during finals week.

Elizabeth

I wish that I had known how poor (in my opinion) the quality of the bureaucratic aspects of the school are, how little help my advisers would be and how little emphasis the students have on learning. I just do not think it was the best school for me.

Rebecca

Can't really think of anything. I felt pretty prepared once I was here. Maybe just alway to stay a little ahead with school work becuase that just makes it easier.

Sam

I wish I knew how to drive. I live in Manhattan and I haven't needed a driver's license but outside of New York City, it's much harder to get around. I also wish I had more of a sense of Ithaca's racial and ethnic diversity. It is not as diverse as I would have liked and that is a problem with the school.
