Dear highschool senior, You are about to embark on a very strange, exciting adventure in your life. You need to start preparing now. You need to drop all the distractions, like your cell-phone, your toxic friendships, and any close-mindedness you may have. Start with a pen and paper: write your life-goal, your 15, 10, 5, and 1 year goal. Declutter all doubt and self-misconceptions about yourself, and embrace your future success as if you already have it. Study your SAT/ACT books thoroughly, ask questions, and make each day the first day of your future.

zynthia

The advice I would give to my highschool self would be take career test online, figure out what your passion is before you go to college. Also go purchase a ACT study book and go take the ACT until you get a 25 or better. Know exactly what you want to get a degree before applying for college. Research the colleges before you attend. If you can avoid loans do so. Apply for scholarships all the time. Apply for as many scholarships as possible before you start and while you are attending. I would also tell myself stay focused dont get distracted. I will also tell my highschool self never give up even when it gets hard, dig deep and continue your journey it does have a end that will be beneficial to you for years to come.

Camera

To be my total and complete self. When getting ready to go to college, some may think that they need to create a whole new identity to seem "cool" and that is totally not the case. You will make friends regardless and whoever judges you shouldn't be your friend in the first place! Just be your normal and natural self. People will be drawn to your glow of individuality.

Gerald

I would have told myself to step out of my comfort zone and leave home to attend college and then to apply to the military. I believe that the balance of the two would have developed both my educational and work environment skills quicker than the route that I took.

Shawnette

If I were to be able to go back in tiime and talk to myself as a high school senior knowing what I know now about college life and making the transition, I would say, "Persevere, it is worth it". In addition, I would tell myself to use the resources available to incoming freshmen. Talk to advisors and groups that are there to help you integrate. I would remind myself that it is not about everyone else and their future. It is about your future. Do whatever it takes to suceed. Do not be distracted by social concerns, but do not neglect them either. This will be the best time of your life - so live it. In doing so, make sure you live it responsibily. Surround yourself with like-minded people that will help you grow. Get to know your professors and don't be afraid to ask questions. Never forget your purpose in being there. Dream bigger than you think your dreams will take you, because they will take you even further if you let them.

Keirston

There are many things that I would go back and tell myself about college. The one thing that I think would be the most important would be to tell myself to try and determine what kind of a job or area of work that I would be most interested in. Along with that though, if I had known what area of study that I would be interested in I would have been able to make my transfer to my desired college much smoother by knowing what classes I needed to plan on taking, allowing for an easier transition. High school is the best time to try and “figure” out your life. I wish that I had a little bit more guidance and what to expect, so that way I was more prepared for the college life.

Miranda

Take the scholarship to JSU. You can survive a few more years in this town, and things to get better than this. College opens up so many more life opportunities. High school was just a small stepping stone. Don't let the drama hold you back. You were made for this. Follow what is really in your heart, not just to the career path that makes the most money.

damon

I would tell myself that when I leave high school and enter the college world alot of the people who i talk to now will move on with their lives. I have to not only accept losing firends but when I get to school i need to get active around the campus and meet and friend as many people as i can.

Antonius

Apply, Apply, Apply! As an honors graduate from high school i expected scholarships to waltzed right into my pocket. I believed if I did well enough in high school, I would not need to make the effort everyone else is making to find money for college. After graduation, I quickly found I was wrong. If I could go back to give myself advice, I would tell myself ,"It's not only how well you apply yourself in high school to recieve help for college tuition, it's also how much you apply for scholarships too. It's great you stayed dedicated to making good grades and stayed involved in high school, but now it's time to let others congratulate you with monetary support to advance your education. Go, now, and apply for as many scholarships as you can. It will only hurt you the longer you wait." If I told myself this as a high school junior, or even a senior, I wouldn't have had to sacrafice so much to stay enrolled in college. I know i can do great. I already have the intelligence that is needed. Now i just need the money to support my education.

When choosing a career in nursing, there are many options. After obtaining a license to practice as a registered nurse (RN), you can pursue a primary care nurse practitioner role in advanced practice nursing (APN). A master of science in nursing (MSN) will prepare you in a specialty role. In the short term, this sort of program will provide a graduate education that is clinically relavant to the challenges in the practice environments. In the long term, the driven information based health care enviornment will require the RN to have a broad knowledge base for an effective evidence based practice. Keep going, obtain a certificate by examination in the family nurse practitioner (FNP) specialty. FNPs are trained to be providers of a wide range of primary care to a diverse group of patients beginning in childhood and continuing throughout the aging process. The responsibilities include treating both the physical and mental conditions of patients. FNPs advocate an effective reduction in re-hospitalization and an increase in the quality of life. The health care system is constantly changing. The primary care nurse practitioner role is expanding to meet the new demands of patient care. This can become your new identity.

If I could go back in time and give myself advice as a high school senior, I would advise myself to take everything serious and into consideration. I would explain that it is not the end of high school, but the beginning of adulthood. I would also explain that college is where you will learn more about yourself than thought of. Finances, studying, time management, socialization, and overall life lessons will be discovered. There are no parents, teachers, or counselors to tell you how to handle every situation. You have step up to the plate. I would tell myself at 18 life may be a breeze but a 22 life begins to hit home. Be cautious and wise, not everyone is here to hurt you but not everyone is a best friend.Take care of yourself mentally and physically. There is nothing wrong with talking to someone about what may be going on with yourself. There will be fun times, spring breaks, and social gatherings, but you have to learn how to distinguish your good times from your study times. College is a great experience that I would never go back to change, but it is a challenge.

Audrae

I would tell myself to keep going and stay strong in following my dreams. Don't let these people bring you down and call you weird because you act, sing, and enjoy learning. They don't have the drive that you do, and they won't go as far as you. College is so much better and you will find people just like you. These people will love and accept you, and they'll be in your life for a long, long time. You will learn so much about acting and all the career paths you can follow. You'll find a friend named Katie who will listen to you, understand you, give you advice, and tell you how proud she is of you when you succeed. You'll find friends named Allison and Meri who are nerds just like you, share the same interests you do, and show you that you are not alone. And you wil find your best friend, named Vance, who will show you how beautiful and amazing life, love, and you are. Stay strong, these peopl are just around the corner. Your new life is just around the corner.

Nicole

I would recommend taking atleast one college course during the senior year, so students can get an idea of what to expect from classes. Taking atleast one online class will help you learn how to discpline yourself more and how college work/teachers are different then highschool work/teachers.

aaron

The main piece of advice i would give myself is to work on my study habits a lot more. In highschool I never had to study and I would make tons of A's. Coming from high school into college is totally different. The classes are harder, there is more work to be done, and it requires twice as much thinking as high school did. I dont think my first semester would have been as hard if I had just studied more. I would have also told myself to focus on the big picture of my future instead of worrying about what was going on at the moment. With all of that said even though that would have been nice to know I'm glad i didn't because i would not be the person I am today without having to learn that lesson on my own.

gabrielle

I would tell myself to reconsider going to another college. I would let myself know about the changes I had to make that were necessary and unnecessary. I would tell myself to fill out scholarships, get a job, and save. I would tell myself to watch out for people that want to be in my life and do not be so quick to let them in. I would let myself know that my original roommate did not work and I need to rethink that choice. I would tell myself to get a tutor in every subject I already know that i will need help in.

Ashley

I would love to go back and have a talk with myself when I began college. There are many things that I would like to tell myself. I would first tell myself to get ready for lots of studying. I would also tell myself to go straight into the field of Education. I could be graduated by now if I would have only done what I thought I wanted to do. I would tell myself to study more so that my GPA would be a lot higher. I know I could have done a lot better, but I didn't apply myself as well as I should have. I would tell myself that it was a great choice to not be in a sorority because I have made really great friends that are not in a sorority. I would like to tell myself to try and be more involved in the school activities because it wouldn't hurt to have been a little more involved. The most important thing that I would tell myself would be to apply myself in each and every way.

kelsey

I would tell myself to work alot harder. It may seem as if it is hard and boring, but later on in life it will all be worth it. I would tell myself that work is not the most important thing in life but my education is. College life is fun and it is also really expensive, and if i would want to be able to pay for college up front I will need to really focus and try to really push myself to the limit I know that I can achieve. Senior year maybe the best year of some students life but when in college thats where things really matter and the fun of your life beginning really is.

Gina

Start saving money now for college because the expense is too high to manage on one salary.

laura

My advice to myself would be, "Choose you major carefully! Otherwise, you waste valuable time and money." I didn't give much thought into what I would enjoy doing for the REST of my LIFE. My BS is in Finance. I became registered on state and federal levels to buy and sell stocks and bonds on the New York Stock Exchange. The stress was unbelieveable! I watched as several co-workers were moved into other, less stressful departments after suffering from heart attacks and strokes. I knew this would be my own demise if I did not find something else to do. I quit work (when my husband and I were financially able) in order to care for our three wonderful children. Now, that all but one are starting school, I've decided to get my Masters in Education. This will enable me to have basically the same schedule as my children. I anticipate that teaching 30 high schoolers math everyday will carry it's own level of stress. At least, I may be able to impart some wisdom to them about choosing majors carefully while still teaching them the value of x. Thank you for your time!

Amanda

I would research the colleges more before making a definite decision. You definitely have to take college more seriously, it is a lot more work than high-school.

Jacqueline

Attending JSU was one of the most inportant decision of my life. Moving three hours away I was scared for my life. I was not raised to be an independent person, so this was a test of a lifetime. When I got here I was warmly welcomed by many people who I now call my best friends. I joined the band here and now am opening for the 2012 Olympics in London, as well as playing for her majesty in the New Years Day Parade. My courses, yet challenging, are well explained and I am looking forward to pursuing my career in Computer Science. This school has open so many oppurtunities and has taught me the most important life lessons. I am truly greatful I picked the right school.

Tiffany

I feel like I have not only gained an education but a family. No, I do not mean being a part of a Soroity, but I mean the way the faculty attentively listens to the students. They are there to help with making schedules, encouraging you to do your best in their class, and even lend an ear if you are having a bad day. Inside the classroom, the teachers are all about teaching the material in a way that students can understand and using various materials ( i.e. movies, guest speakers, some times field trips, etc.) to get the point across. With my bachelor being in Social Work, I feel like I really got some valuable tools to work with people and feel like I can bring those skills to use in my master's program. My classes taught me to think in a completely different mindset. They taught me to see the "whole picture" when I am dealing with a person not only in Social Work but in everyday society. I also have learned more about myself. I feel I have grown not only as a person but as a professional as I performed different assignments in class.

Debra

After attending Jacksonville State University, I was able to learn how to balance school and athletics together, while still maintaining a social life. I believe that by going away to school, to Jacksonville State University, and being from the north gave me a chance to really learn who I am and who I want to be. I think that going away to school also taught me how to time manage and be successful. I believe that this school was valuable to attend because it gave me the means necessary to be successful and graduate within four years. It has also prepared me to be a beneficial member of society. Faculty and staff at Jacksonville State University really strive to have their students succeed in the real world. I am very pleased with my choice at attending Jacksonville State University.

Stephanie

The college experience to me as really been overwhelming. The first step I took was to prepare myself for the best, but that all changed. What I got out of my college experience is to keep up wth everything and notes that you take from class. Be aware of your surroundings, always take someone with you at night. College may be fun, but at times it can be demanding. When I first got there, I was head over heels to get to meet some different people from various races and different countries. Its true that opposites attract one another, but it got it got the best of me. From that point on I suffered my Sophmore year. Everything I prayed and asked God for was slipping out of my grasps, but I realized why it was happening. Nothing stayed with me, my grades began to drop, I began to experience problems that I thought I wouldnot have to go through as a young lady. I lost my job; my money was short, got behind on rent and was almost evicted. It has been valuable to attend the college to let someone else on the past experience. Its not worth it.

Richard

I have gotten many things out of my college experience that has proven valuable beyond education. I have learned what it means to live on my own and to make my own decisions. I have learned the consequences of some decisions from my own experiences and from the experiences of others. Also, college is much more challanging academically allowing me to grow in both self-discipline and knowledge, preparing me for the life that I am about to go into.

Stacey

In my college experience I have gained an understanding of the content required for my degree and an understanding of a diverse world. I have gained life long friends and a positive view of the educational system.

Darryl

While attending my school I have learned many useful things that are going to be an asset to my further education and life! I have recieved expirence in my field of study, better understanding of myself, better studying skills, and countless friends that are apart of support group. This is valuable because my expirence at school is all base on this and the school plays a huge part in me finding new things out about myself and learning something new everyday.

Erin

My college experience has been amazing. I have learned so much in the past four years. The farther along I advance in college, the more I consider going back for further education. I have learned to look outside the box and become more knowledgeable in all aspects of life. I have also learned how to live on my own and become an independent person. When I started college, I thought it would be like high school. I learned really quickly that college was a whole new ballgame. I have learned more studying is required and living on your own without mom and dad is a difficult challenge. College is not only about school work, it?s also learning about who you are. I would not trade my college experience for anything; it has made me a better and more knowledgeable individual. Thank you for your time in advance and opportunity to apply for a scholarship.

Andres

I have learned a lot about responsibility and taking things into my own hand. I have also learned how to prioritize my life and create schedules to make my life easier through organization. It has been valuable to me because I have learned a lot about life and how I will use my knowledge gained once I receive my degree. I have learned in college that the key to success is responsibility and dedication. Time is of the essence therefore I must make good use of mine to learn from all my experiences gained in college. I have gained wisdom from my professors that were willing to teach me, but It was me who chose to listen and put into play all that I have gained. It is a gift for me to be able to attend college due to my circumstance of not coming from a wealthy family. I gained the ability to socialize with others to give input on my thoughts and decisions within the walls of school. I treasure the opportunity given to me because not everyone is given this present.

Elizabeth

Through my college experience I have gained knowledge and commitment. I have learned about many subjects I never knew existed. The knowledge I have gotten out of my college experience will help me further my goal in becoming successful. I have learned to be committed to my goal as a student in getting my degree. College has given me the opportunity to further my wisdom within different genres. I value attending and taking up my seat in each classroom I have chosen because I know that in the long run I will be prosperous. College has also given me the perspective of giving to those that are in need. Therefore I want to be successful to give back a lending hand to those in need like I am at this very moment. I have gained synchronism with time itself through living in rhythm with my schedule going from class to class. I have gained the knowledge of knowing I must be fully committed if I want to pursue my education. I am the only one responsible for my education so I value every fact I learn and every professor that is willing to pass their wisdom on to me.

Shirley

I have received experience, responsibility, and organization. I have learned that it's my choice to be in college; therefore, I am the one in charge of being dedicated to my job as a student. I have become organized in order to follow through with my tasks as a student. I owned up to my new experience as an adult in college and have learned to do the best I can in any circumstance. Every day is a new experience; as a result, in college I have learned many lessons. It is extremely valuable for me to attend college because I am being given the opportunity to excel in life. I am the first person in my family to attend college so I want to succeed mentally, physically, and economically in order to be able to help not only me but others as well. I value the open door that leading to the path I have created towards college, but it is up to me to reach the other side at the end of the path. Everyone is given an opportunity but it is an individuals own responsibility to pursue the chance given which I fortunately have learned in college.

Brittney

I have learned that the connections you make in college can be invaluable and irreplacable.

Anna

What I have gotten out of my college experience are friends that will last a lifetime, education that will help me with my career. It has been valuable to attend because withou furthering my education I couldn't get a higher paying job or support myself or a family.

Sarah

I am the first in my family to attend college in the U.S. I am from Afghanistan. Came to the U.S as an refugee in 1990. My family and I started a life here with $350.00 in our pockets. I am really proud of my self that despite all the problems I have faced in life that I am getting my A.A degree this May. I am gonna continue my education at CSULB to obtian my bachelor's degree. I have come back to school after 10 years. I understand the value of gaining a good education now than I ever did before. I apreciate school and i am so eager to learn now compared to when i was in school before. I learned the hard way. I have had many financial struggles in the last ten years of my life where I had to work full time to make ends meet. Right now I am unemployed and surviving on pennies. I dont want to have to leave school agian and go back to work without a degree. So please help me in any way that is possible to keep my dream alive. Thank You

TIVORIS

I have learned the importance of classwork. Going to this institue is not all about parties. It is about finding yourself and receving the education that you desire.

Chareda

I got a very marketable degree that has helped me stay employed for 10 years now.

William

I have learned to put my priorites first. I have learned that once I have completed my studies then I can go out and socialize. I have also learned that it does not hurt to study. I feel that if I had this same menatility in high that I have in college then my grades would have been all A's.

Michael

Apply for as many scholarships as you can before the second semester of your senior year. Apply to more than one school, don't just settle for one.

Alina

If I were able to travel back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to live in the moment. There are a number of things that I look back on and wish that I had not missed because I was so reserved and just not comfortable enough to open myself up to strangers. I would tell myself that it is best not to regret, but better not to give oneself a reason to regret.

Melissa

Listen Girl! You are about to embark on an epic adventure. I understand that you want to stay close to home and get your feet wet-forget about it! Have no fear! You won't be so far away that you can't get home in a day and you need the opportunity to find yourself. Live on campus! You will meet so many people from different walks of life and it will help you to be more open-minded and accepting. Be an activ participant in as many clubs and activities as possible. Don't be afraid to try anything...audition for the play, join an intramural team...you may never get a second chance. Make friends with people in your field of study and then study together. Go to the library everytime you think you should; you won't ever regret that! Most importantly, don't get in too much of a hurry. You have the rest of your life to work a full time job and pay car payments. Bum a ride, live in the dorm, and don't create needless debt. It will be an epic adventure you will never forget!

Travis

Take a few months off away from any type of school situation and just have fun then come back and make the best choice possible for ME.

jeremee

i am about to embark on a journey that will help me out in the future and make me more well rounded as a person. This scholarship will help me in the long run because my family has never been wealthy of any sort. i will do my best even if i dont recieve the scholarship and when i graduate help out all the less fortunate with my computer programming skills.

NICHOLE

I WOULD TELL MY SELF TO PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE. THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT AND NEW OPPERTUNITIES AND I SHOULD TRY SOMETHING NEW. ITS A TIME OF DISCOVERING WHO YOU ARE AND DISCOVERING WHAT YOU VALUE AND WHAT YOUR OWN IDEALS ARE FOR YOUR SELF NOT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK. TO FOLLOW MY OWN PATH BECAUSE WHAT IS RIGHT FOR ONE MAY NOT BE RIGHT FOR ME. SCHOOL WILL BE HARD AT TIMES BUT STICK IT OUT AND YOU'LL SUCCSEED AND YOU'LL BE HAPPIER FOR IT. GO TO CLASS DO THE WORK AND HAVE FUN.

Dalton

I would tell myself to study harder, make all A's, and be more involved in the various organizations my high school offered. I would tell myself to be better prepared to write essays and term papers. I would tell myself to enjoy the easy days while they lasted.

Meagan

If I could go back and talk to myself as a senior in high school, I would make myself apply for more scholarships. As a senior I was more focused on my ballgames and schoolwork then applying for various scholarships. As I entered my freshman year at a community college, I realized just how expensive college gets. College was always a choice that I was confident with and I knew I was going, but I just did not anticipate how much money would go into my dream. Knowing now what I didn't know then, I would have definitely applied for more scholarships to make my dream become more of a reality. One more thing I would tell myself as a senior, would be that college is nothing like high school and I should learn how to study. In grade school, studying was never something that I had to do. I was more like a sponge absorbing the information we learned in class, but in college, there is more information to learn for a test and studying is now a priority. Although I make it through, I still do not know exactly how to study.

Ayana

If i could go back in time and tell myself what i know now, I would tell myself to study more and be more organized with my classes. I picked my classes pretty well for the first time but i could have spaced them more apart so i could have time to review my notes for classes. I would certainly tell myself to get plenty of rest because college can surely wear you out. I could tell myself to make sure I join a club or group so that i could know more people because I come from a far place. Knowing more people will definitely help out in the long run. The last thing i would tell myself is be more attentive in class. My grades were good my first semester but i could have done better if I asked more questions and maybe payed a bit more attention.

Luther

The first thing I would be doing as a high school senior is making sure that I know exactly what I want or plan on doing when I get there. Secondly, Im going make sure that I register for all my classes, the meal plans, housing and etc; a couple of months before I graduate from high school. Make sure I visit the campus before I make my final decision on attending that college. Third, while you still a high school your senior you'll need to practice being on time for classes, being organized and most importantly, pick up studying habits. Last, is being responsible. At college there's no parents, your consider an adult so act like one. Do your work cause the teachers are not like high school teachers. Their not going to beg you to do anything its on you to remember the due dates and test dates. To put it in shorter words for my peers, "be about your buisness first and have fun doing it but not to much fun at the same time".

Sean

I would tell myself to study harder and not be lazy with homework/schoolwork. I would also tell myself to apply for more scholarships and work harder at the essays and surveys.

Melanee

I would tell myself not to procrastinate. It is better to start work earlier so that you don't feel so stressed when the time comes to complete that long term paper.
