James Madison University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Marissa

They are all very nice and helpful. No matter how much of a diverse group they are, they are a family.

Alexandria

For the most part my classmates loved thier major, thier classes, and thier school.

Walker

There is a strong sense of community between my classmates at James Madison. While the school size is growing, JMU is still small enough to where each individual student feels like an integral part of the James Madison community. Students often share common stories of balancing a challenging academic work load, social life, and the ever elusive quality night's sleep. Despite students ranging from all over the world, we are able to appreciate our differences, which gives a sense of family. Truly a home away from home.

William

My classmates at Jame Madison are all very nice people. They are all open and willing to talk when I sit near them in class or even just approach them and some of them I have gotten to know on a more personal level.

ronique

Ambitious and world traveled, many of the students who graduated James Madison University came from the suburbs of Washington DC, Richmond and Hampton Roads, Virginia. Most of the students were well versed in world events and many of the students cared deeply for the world and communities we would impact post-graduation. This is an important trait of JMU students. When they mentioned to us to "be the change"you want to see, most of the students took this advice seriously. Many of them have done just that regardless to the profession they chose to work in.

Anna

My classmates are passionate, beautiful people who have a lot to offer the world.

Abbey

Very active, involved, friendly, smart, and attractive

Laura

My classmates are very career focused and looking for ways to better their learning experience while they are here at JMU.

Hailey

The students here are great. It is a very relaxed and accepting community where anyone can be happy I think. On the Commons, on any given day, there are a ton of different clubs and organizations raising money for a good cause. A couple weeks ago, two guys on the bus were casually discussing current events. This is definitely a socially aware environment and getting out into the community and into the world is highly encouraged with things like the Alternative Break Program.

As I said when first describing JMU stereotypes, it is easy to say that students are extremely diverse here. There are a good amount of organizations that cater towards specific interest and orientations in life. These people are all accepted, and in most classes different types of people always end up becoming good friends. This is what makes JMU such a great community and provides a prosperous environment for learning and making new connections. All students are engaged in what is going on in the world and this is a good thing. A lot of kids come from wealth but recognize what life has to offer when you're not greedy. JMU has proven to me that I will make a lot of money when I get out of college and most kids have that general attitude of success.

At JMU students are very friendly and understanding. Even when people have different opinions or beliefs they try to respect those of others. I would say that although there is ethnic diversity, we could still benefit from more diversity. But people do not treat you differently because of how you look. There is a wide variety religiously and people can get involved with groups that have similar religious ideas. JMU does have a high Christian population though (although not all are practicing Christians) and there are a significant number of Christian organizations for them to be involved in. From my understanding the parent of the average student at JMU makes $120,000 a year. That is not the case for me, or for many of my friends. Although there are quite a few students who are from a higher economic standing, there are still plenty of people through out the spectrum. We have a noticeable LGBT community on campus that is active and growing and I have seen growing acceptance in my years at JMU. One thing I would change is that people seem to cluster with their racial/ethnic group and I wish there was a way to work on that because ideally the JMU students want to have everyone interacting with each other. About going to class, most students dress comfortably, although girls tend to dress-up more than guys.

Lauren

JMU is not as diverse a school as many other colleges. It is predominately a white campus but there are people from different backgrounds. JMU is said to be full of girls wearing UGG boots and Northface jackets. That is probably the majority of the people on the campus but not everyone dresses like that. There are a lot of people from northern virginia who are of high socio-economic class. I would say JMU is probably more liberal than conservative. There are a lot of religious groups on campus for people who want to get involved to get involved. It would be so much better if JMU was more diverse than it is especially since I came from such a diverse highschool but sadly it isn't as diverse as I would want it to be. I don't think people would feel out of place at all based on race because JMU is such a loving community.

JMU may not seem like a diverse campus at first glance (as it is majoritally white girls), but the range of personalities and backgrounds that can be found at this campus are astounding. I think it would be difficult for anyone to really truely feel out of place here, there is so much to offer on this campus and something for everyone. The majority of students though seem to be from either VA, NY, NJ, Pennsylvania or Maryland. It's not uncommon to see girls dressed red carpet ready for class (for some reason??), but its just as equally common to see your everyday jeans and hoodie filling the same classroom.

Allison

The student body is extremely diverse. This can be seen any day on the Commons, on the Quad, or really anywhere you go. Clubs and organizations are huge on campus and play a big role in putting on campus wide events and activities. Greek life is prevalent, but definitely not overwhelming and all encompassing.

Michelle

My classmates are very outgoing, friendly, and love to socialize.

Leslie

According to their attitudes and interaction between me and them, my classmates are both friendly and eager to learn as much as I want to learn.

Emanuel

All of my classmates look at the big picture. Our lives are only worth so much, and we all seem to be searching for an identity and a purpose at our insitution. While, first and foremost, academics is the key to our time at JMU, probing the depths of what it means to be connected and human are constant topics in the classroom. At the end of the day, all of my classmates display love for our university and for one another.

Sara

Although most people are too preoccupied with the party life, there is another side of students here who are intelligent, hard-working and involved people who have their own respectful interests and passions.

Sydney

To many girls, but overall pretty good.

Mikaela

It is fairly easy to make friends in class, if you really want to get to know them just put forth an effort and make it happen. They are willing to help with missed notes or chat before and after class, as well as wanting to form study groups if necessary.

Tyra

I love my classmates. Everyone is inquisitive and here to learn just as much as I am. Everyone here is so nice and friendly. Something I am not use to.

Lee

Student body is great! Fun to hang around with, and generally a friend for everyone.

Ingrid

Completely different from where I grew up, more open and want to help those around and no one wants to leave James Madison University!

Graham

My classmates are interesting, and I cannot describe them all in one sentence as they are each different, whether they be the two-thirds of my class that lounge around, do not participate, and try to sleep in class; or the good section that asks questions and are willing to work with each other to solve difficult problems.

Sarah

My classmates were enthusiastic, heavily involved in the plethora of student activities, supportive, socially conscious, school-spirited, inclusive, active, encouraging, determined, and they worked as hard as they played and they played as hard as they worked.

Laurel

For the most part the students here are good, open-minded people, but there are some immature, close-minded jerks. Don't let the jerks ruin it for you, and don't waste your time with them.

Kelley

They are very friendly and would always help you out in any way, should you need help.

Stacy

My classmates are a mixture of focused students and slackers, and there are more women than men.

Cierra

My classmates at James Madison University are different(in a good way), unique, talented, very educated, social, very friendly, kind, willing to give a helping hand when possible, and all around good people.

Rebecca

James Madison University has done an amazing job of bringing together smart and dedicated students who are yearning to receive a well-rounded and valuable education, so that they can impact the world significantly in the career of their choice.

Mari

Many of my classmates that I've had the chance to meet and work with are kind, helpful, and very friendly- exactly the kind of people I'd like to be around for the rest of my college years; I've never met anyone who wasn't happy with the school choice and everyone is so enthusiastic about being here.

Candace

The majority are not considerate and spend most of their time focusing on what their social plans are instead of school.

Amy

They are generally ambitious, driven, hard working and engaged. They strive to succeed and do well in their classes for the most part. Most people participate in class discussions and complete their homework and readings on time.

Christine

My classmates at JMU are nice people with a lot of school spirit; however, there are a few out there that are just inconsiderate and rude, but you'll find that at any college.

Marisee

The other students I met at James Madison University were very free spirited, deep in thought, and more open minded then I had met before or even expected to encounter.
