The open-curriculum and emphasis on study abroad definitely set this school apart from most.
Kalamazoo College is well-renowned for its emphasis on the 'K Plan,' which involves the first year experience, externship, internship, study abroad, and a SIP (senior individualized project). Kalamazoo focuses on course rigor, active social leadership, and discussion and participation in the classroom. Classes are generally under 25 students, ensuring quality learning time and close professor to student interaction. The liberal arts program allows students to gain a broad understanding in all fields, rather than focusing on one specific field. Kalamazoo boasts high participation in service learning programs and ranks 19th in graduating seniors into doctoral programs.
To many people, going to college is about preparing yourself for a job. But I would rather learn and grow in college to prepare myself to be a global citizen than pick a compartmentalized career path and limit myself. Kalamazoo College offers interdisciplinary majors--like Human Development and Social Relations, my intended major--that allow me to become a well-rounded individual. All six classes I have taken so far have been in different departments and all six have contributed to my intended major and minor. There are no general education requirements, but we as students naturally seek diversity.
The school is very small so the relationship between the students and professors is much closer than at larger schools. Kalamazoo College also has an excellent study abroad program and nearly 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students participate in study abroad.
Kalamazoo College is known for the "K Plan" which promotes well-rounded students that are accepting and understanding of many different cultures, societies, and people while giving students great opportunities such as externships, internships, study abroad and the completipon of a senior project. Also, a huge percentage of students at this school (approx. 85{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}) participate in study abroad (3, 6, or 11 months) and the programs are in many countries and very easily accessible (built in to the school schedule and financial aid), making this study abroad program different from other schools.
Lots of focus on the individual, with much individual attention given.
One of the best study abroad programs in the states
It's small and has a good reputation among people who have heard of it, especially because of the Study Abroad program.
