What are the academics like at your school?

Its great the lectures are good too its just great

Seth

Challenging but appropriate

Well I can tell already from this semester that students strive for A's. I read and heard about students GPA's being above 3.8. That to me is amazing. I'm going for an bachelor degree in Engineering with a major in construction science and management. I'm taking all the prerequisites right now and need a GPA above 2.5 to change to that college. Then in the fall I will officially be taking the required classes for my degree. Some of my classes are lecture's with about 100 students and there isn't much involvement or discussion's that go on. But we do have in class activities that are very competitive. One, I can remember, was make the tallest structure using toothpicks and marshmallows which was fun. But in the smaller recitation classes it seems more formal. Being able to ask the teacher something, and have them help you individually. I've only been to some professors office hours. Mainly asking due dates and details on an assignment. They are good about letting students know that they can ask them anything. K state's engineering department I found out is in the top 10 in the nation. Its cool to be a part of that and help keep it there.

Megan

Our academics are very good.

Timothy

The academics are great at KSU. I have nothing to complain about

Xinchi

It is not very pushing.

Here, at Kansas State everyone, and I mean everyone cares about academics. Even the hardcore partiers still go to class, do their homework and care about how they do. There aren't a ton of lecture classes, like Public Speaking...a class where everyone on campus has to take to graduate, I only have 20 kids in my class. Kansas State tries really hard to make it easy on the students, and make the classes fairly small. Every professor here works hard to know every student and will answer any question anyone has. We are a huge academic school.

Katie

Classes at K State are about the same size as my classes were in high school so all of my teachers know my name and know that I am a good student. Since I am an engineering student I do spend quite a bit of time studying but I still have lots of free time to be in clubs do other extra curricular activities. Plus our school does a great job of helping us get prepared for life after college. Every fall we have the all university career fair that at least 100 companies attend. Then in the spring most of the colleges have their own career fair.

I think the academics very much depend on the department. From my experience, if you talk in class or engage with your professor, it is very easy to get to know them. They are generally friendly and willing to help. Some departments are more rigorous than others but I do see people studying in the library at all times. I also hear that the farther you get in a major the more you need to study and the busier you get, especially if you participate in other activities on or outside of campus. I think the general requirements are on par but the system used to reach the requirements is fantastic and very personal. I (like to) engage in intellectual conversation outside of classes and I think both of my majors lend themselves to meeting people who also enjoy doing so.

Jasmine

The likeability of classes vary from professors, to class size and subject. My least favorite classes are the general education courses. Of course, no one really enjoys general ed courses. My favorite class so far was the Introduction to Communications class. The professor was fun and so was the class. Unless you're taking a huge lecture class, professors will know your name. The library is one of the best resources K-State has to offer, so it's always filled with students,

Kassi

At Kansas State, most professors will know your name within the first month or two of classes unless you are in a big lecture hall. Class participation is extremely common and if needed, professors will take the time to meet with students individually outside of class to discuss material. I have done this a few times to help understand material I didn't quite get in class. My major/department is Bluemont Hall, which is the College of Education, and I am studying Elementary Education- ESL (English as a Second Language). I try to study every day for about an hour total to cover all my classes. This sometimes turns into an hour and a half or sometimes two hours. Outside of the classroom, conversations are both interesting and intellectual. These conversation sometimes turn competitive, especially in the classroom in discussions. Students are competitive about their subjects. Passionate would probably be a better word. One class I took was called Human Development with Dr. Kelly Welch. It was probably the most interesting class I've taken so far. I'm sure I'll have more to come seeing that this is only my second semester here at K-State. Dr. Welch was passionate and extremely open about things that are sometimes shunned or simply not discussed, such as childbirth and sex. The education provided at K-State helps towards whatever career one is going after. The administration ensures students are enrolled in the right classes and get all the material necessary for the course. Not only that, but the instructors are passionate and enthusiastic. The academic requirements are challenging, yet attainable.

Sarah

The academics are amazing! I give Kansas State so many props to their educational standards. I have yet to have a bad teacher, be it Doctor, Professor, or GTA. They have all been amazing and I have learned so much. The majority of my teachers I have gotten to know on a first name basis. Large lectures are a little different unless you choose to go into office hours, but in my major I know half the faculty by first name. In class participation is also a very common occurance as we like to dialogue and get involved with the material. It really depends on the class how much this happens. Also if the class is early in the morning there is always bound to be less talking than those in the afternoon. Studying outside of class is an essential. You are always bound to find people at Hale library no matter what hour of the day or night you go. I seem to always be at my desk or in a practice room and if I decide to venture to Hale there is always someone I can call that is already there studying their heart out. Don't get me wrong we have social lives as well!! We just know what it takes to keep those grades up before we go have fun. Going into my major a bit, I am in the department of Music. We are by far in the top 5 of busiest students on campus. We are either in class or seminars, at recitals or lessons, attending or performing in concerts, or if were not there you can find us in the studio practicing. We don't mind doing as this as it is what we love to do. The faculty know this and thus give us all of these opportunities to heighten our experience. Once you get involved in this department the faculty are bound to know your name. I know all of the voice faculty by first name, and the majority of them know me. All of the GTA's call me by my first name and have asked me to be in positions of authority, so it really makes you feel welcome and gets you involved. In concerns of preparing your for the real world KSU does a great job. They have multiple career fairs and internship opportunities, they have study abroad programs and competitive scholarships for Graduate study. We have recently switched to the K-State 8 program which is for incoming students core requirements making it easier for them to get their core requirements before jumping into their major. Overall I couldn't put Kansas State University at a higher standard for their academics.

Professor Kelly Walsh is the best here at K-State!

The academics at Kansas State University are the best part! Classes cater to everyone. Some are huge lecture halls that easily number in the hundreds, while others are small classroom settings similar to high school. There are also medium-sized classes for students who enjoy a little bit of both. I've taken classes that ranged from all of these sizes. The instructors care about their students. In the small classroom setting, the teachers get to know you quickly and learn your name. Of course it's harder for this to happen in a huge lecture hall, but sitting in the front or meeting with an instructor during his/her office hours can easily take care of that. I've come across some excellent teachers just in my first two semesters here. Something I and many others appreciate is the fact that there are wonderful teachers in every subject, and in required classes. The quality of teaching can be just as good in a general education class as it is in an advanced class specific to a major if you get the right teachers. To be successful in any class, you will have to study, study, study. On average, I study about 4 hours a day. The material that is taught can sometimes be difficult depending on the class, but there is always a purpose to it, be it preparation for a job or learning for learning sake. The students are much more competitive than in high school, which in an institution of higher learner, benefits everyone.

Anthony

Academics are awesome! I'm in architecture and the classes for it are tough, but I learn a lot. Courses for a particular area of study are well sized and you can get to know your professor easily. General education courses are usually larger than I would like them to be, but the learning atmosphere is still great. Architecture design studios, which I take one of every semester, are my favorite classes. In these classes I am in a design studio with other architecture students and we work on assigned projects at the direction of our professor. This class is a really time consuming class because of the amount of time needed to spend on projects, but everybody in these studios is passionate about design and architecture, so the atmosphere is great.

K-State class size and student faculty ratio rank among the best in the Big 12. Many of the classes I take have students with less than 30 students in them. Of course, there will be the large lecture halls with 100's of students, but I've had pretty good experiences with professors working to make sure that students are learning. As a public relations and marketing major, I'm extremely pleased with the amount of class participation in class. The typical lecture format seems to have gone by the wayside and now a more progressive, beneficial and conversational style has been adopted that allows students and professors to collaborate and work together. Over the past semester I developed great relationship with two of my public relations professors. They've helped me re-format resumes and cover letter and have shown me a couple cool places to apply to for when I graduate and are even willing to put me in contact with some people at those companies. An internship is required to graduate in public relations, so I feel like I've had some real experience that makes me more marketable upon graduation. K-State also hosts one of the largest career fairs in the Big 12 which opens up lots of job opportunities after graduation or internship experiences over the summer. I feel like I've been challenged at K-State, but is hasn't been so grueling that academics took over my life. I've had plenty of opportunity to get involved in other aspects of college life and enjoy my time here.

Kelly

i am currently majoring in music education. my professors knew me by name, class sizes weren't too big, and there is tutoring or help when needed for free!

Kirstin

Academics vary depending on the college you are in. Currently, I am in the College of Education. I was also in the College of Engineering for 2 years before I realized it wasn't exactly for me. In most classes (with exceptions of a few gen-eds) the professors know your name. Every single professor I have encountered has cared and wanted to help as much as possible. It is nice for when extra help is needed or if someone just needs to talk to the professor outside of class. Like I noted earlier, K-State is sort of split up into colleges. Once in these colleges, people have an even greater opportunity to meet someone with similar interests. I love that K-State does this! I have always had wonderful advising experiences, too! The College of Education actually has appointed advisers who only advise! This means that they can focus purely on our academics and schedules and everything else! K-State is prestigious for many of the programs and has options for everyone. Even if someone is undecided, it is easy to take general education classes to help them figure out what they are fit for.

Joseph

Academics are fairly personalized at KSU. While lecture halls can exceed 200 students, as you get further into your major, almost all classes average 20-30 students. You can walk through campus and into a classroom and be greeted personally by a professor. These small classes make it comfortable for students and easy for total class participation. Professors almost always make themselves available outside of class for time to talk about academics, or just life in general. For example, my current Italian professor hosted an Italian dinner at his house for students interested in coming. Average students usually take a night or two out of the week to travel to the library to complete homework. This is a great chance to complete homework but also to socialize with friends and meet new people.

Here at Kansas State University class sizes can range from large lectures to small classroom settings. K-State does an amazing job of keeping their class sizes small for the most part, with the average class size 23 students it is extremely easy to become close to your professors. I have multiple professors that know my name even after the semester in which they taught me and are always checking in and making sure that my college experience is going well. Large lecture classes all have what is call a recitations once a week as well where students will have a small classroom setting of 20-25 students as well as a teacher's assistant to go more in depth over lectures as well as assign homework. This service is a great benefit to students because they will always have a small classroom setting where they will be able to contact a teacher or professor at any time. With class choices from accounting to astronomy it is easy to find your academic niche here at Kansas State University. Personally, my favorite classes are Leadership Studies. Kansas State University has a one of a kind minor known as Leadership Studies where students can grow culturally and develop themselves to be stronger leaders within the workplace. The Leadership Studies minor is one of the few nationally as well as the fastest growing minor here at K-State. Academically Kansas State is known the Ivy League of the Midwest. As the leader in Rhodes, Truman, Marshall and Udall scholarships the University has proven it's success in academics. The colleges of architecture, engineering, as well as our interior design program are all top 10 programs in the nation as well as the College of Education ranked first in the state. Kansas State University also the largest medical school acceptance rate from undergraduate in the state at nearly 90{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}.

The academics here are great! My favorite class would be Mass Communications in Society because the professor really tries to explain everything in detail and he really does get to know his students on a personal level. I'm double majoring in Broadcast Journalism and Mass Communications and I'm minoring in Law. I feel like the education at this school will help prepare its' students for future jobs and developing within themselves.

Morgan

Kansas State views academics with high regard. A large number of our students are a member of a Greek house, all of which require a minimum GPA of 2.5. Campus-wide, we have a high average GPA as well. Some classes are very large, around 500 students per lecture hall, and others are very small, with around 20 students. Many off the entry-level classes are quite large since many students are enrolled in those classes. Once you start taking more major-specific classes, the smaller and more personal the classes will be. No matter the size of the classroom, however, most all of the professors are very invested in their students' success, and are willing to get to know you if you let them. Hale, our main campus library, is located in the center of campus. I was told by Dr. Bosco, Vice President of Student Life & Dean of Students, that Hale was placed in the center of campus purposely because academics is our #1 goal here at KSU. Oppositely of what most people would expect, going to the library here is very common for all students, and it's not considered nerdy at all. Going to Hale to study is a norm on our campus, and most students go to the library regularly, not just the week of finals. Although our campus believes academics to be very important, it doesn't completely consume our lives. Our administrators want us to enjoy our time at Kansas State, and they do a good job of making school fun.

For your general requirements to be able to graduate those classes are very large, so it's a little more difficult for professors to get to know students on a personal level, but all are very willing to help students with any questions outside of class and have an open door policy. Once you get into you start taking classes geared towards your major class sizes are a little bit smaller and professors do get to know their students. With me since I am a student with a disability no matter the class size my professors know who I am and I normally have regular contact with them and all are very willing to help me succeed in their class.I have a dual major in Advertising and Criminology - both departments are amazing and very interesting. The education here at K-State is geared toward employment, but also making you more knowledgeable about the subject matter.

Katie

I really love the academics at K-State! Like most schools, we have more students in the general education classes than in major-related but even then, all the professors have been great and really do know my name. Classes are hard for those who don't pay attention or show up, but if you make an effort to learn the material and do the work classes can be as enjoyable and educational as you want them to be. The only thing that I think more students and prospectives need to realize is there is an attendance policy in most classes, where skipping does affect their grades.

One of the things that attracted me most about K-State was the family aura that surrounded it. Here unlike many other large universities students are able to really connect with their professors which really motivates the students to work hard. Although there are a number of lecture halls students can enroll in, there are even more small classroom courses that really encourage students to feel more comfortable asking questions and being involved. The professors really express their desire for their students to do well and go over and beyond to make themselves available as often as possible. As a student in the school of journalism studying Mass Communications and Public Relations it was very important that I was provided an advisor that could get me all the right classes and keep me on track to graduation and that's exactly what I got! My advisor and I were able to sit-down face to face (unlike many other universities) and discuss my academic and career goals to get me in the right classes. We were able to plan out my courses for every semester here which was incredible and really helped keep me on track. She would even email me from time to time to see how I was doing with my classes and ask if there was anything she could do to assist me, which I appreciated greatly. I made sure many of my courses were small class sizes because coming from a small school it was what I felt most comfortable with. These small classrooms also allowed me to meet new people through group projects which also made studying for exams easier. I often scheduled my classes for every other day so that on my days off I could work or spend the day studying which worked out wonderfully. The professors also try to teach you the best ways to learn and study in their specific courses which I believe helped me tremendously. They also encourage you to push yourself not just so that you can graduate and get a good job but so that you can learn as much about yourself and of the world as you can.

Sarah

I am a person who needs a challenge. So, naturally, I choose to switch from an already difficult major to a more time-consuming, difficult major. I started out in the Pre-Veterinarian Sciences major; yes, the classes were difficult, (this is coming from a 4.0 HS student) but NOT unmanageable. You just have to learn to manage your class load. Meaning, do NOT take Biology and Chemistry I at the same time, or Genetics 500, MacroEconomics, and Chemistry II in the same semester. BAD IDEA. I ended up being super stressed and got B's in all of those classes! Which, if you are trying out for a super-competitive position in the KSU Veterinary program, is a no-no. I basically was consumed by academics, however, despite the hard classes, I still managed to have TONS of time with my friends and was able to attend many on-campus activities which our school so graciously provides. Some things happened this last year which made me make the awesome decision to switch to the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design. I couldn't be more happy with my decision! However, the program is extremely time intensive! So, learn to manage your time early and consider taking a smaller class load so that you will have extra time to work on projects. The rumors are NOT all true about having to pull all-nighters. I have never pulled an all-nighter before, and I have turned in two of my projects early. All you have to do is learn how to manage your time. So, K-state has many challenges available, in case you're looking. Just be sure to learn how to manage your course load and your time. Make an effort to take a break now and then to hang out with friends on the weekends or go home and visit the family. Never make yourself feel overstressed with something (classes, projects) when you have plenty of time for it later. Enjoy college. It goes by fast!

Jennifer

The point of going to college is to further your education but after your time here, a job is in your future. I am currently a freshman and getting a job in the "real world" seems very far away but even in my first semester, I have been in contact with future employers and the Career and Student Services already. K-State makes it difficult to not have a career in your future and they prepare you well for it.

Kayla

It's obvious that our courses are not as rigorous as other top colleges, but K-State academics can challenge our students to do their best and still be able to take away something from the course they take. There are an array of classes to consider enrolling in, and class size is typically between 15-30 in a major-driven course. I love my major in Family Studies and Human Services, because the classes are fun, easy to understand, and the professors seem to truly care about the students and our success in college. K-State focuses on tools and skills to help us succeed out of the college realm, and students learn how to be strong and independent leaders in life. It's just awesome. Plain and simple.

Blair

My overall academic experience has been great at K-State. The teacher's in my major of Business Management have been attentive and dedicated to my personal success as a student; if I put forth the effort to learn they've put forth the effort to make sure I understand. The only area I've been disappointed with in my 4 years at K-State was the math department. The teacher's I've had are so smart that they have had trouble relating to students. Fortunately for me K-State has FREE tutoring available to all students on campus. The greatest classes I've had an opportunity to be a part of were the Leadership Studies Minor classes. These classes have opened my mind about and allowed my leadership abilities to grow to a new level. By understanding that our backgrounds make us unique is has allowed me to understand more clearly how to resolve conflict and lead a group more effectively.

Lori

I'm in alot of large lectures right now, so most of those teachers don't know my name. However, I'm part of the smallest department in engineering and they all know my name which is astounding to me. THere is always studying going on, but the big majority of it occurs around finals and midterms. Theres also someone always playing or having a good time. Sometimes at the same time. In my department, Bio-Ag Engineering, we are around our instructors a lot. We had picnics and they help with the different design projects. I don't know about all the other majors, but with mine, everything is always tied back to how it applies in the field. It's nice because I'm one of those people who want to make sure what I'm learning actually matters.

Monica

Being in the College of Architecture the relationships between students and professors, as well as students and other students is unbelievably close. There are about 180 of us who spend entire days and even weeks together becoming a family with not only classmates but with intructors. This also makes te major very competitive because that number quickly dwindles. The requirements are exhausting but coming out of K-Sate with a degree in architecture makes it very easy to get a great job.

Dani

Classes are challenging...as they should be. College is not easy like highschool where you can bull your way through. Teachers are always willing to help a student who is struggling. I love the tutoring option. Professors communicate well with students. If one has a question, they can easily email their teacher and have quick responses! Not one teacher was unwilling to help me if I had a question or was struggling in class.

Melania

I think at K-Sate you get the chance to build the right background for an amazing career as you learn many other things maybe not completely related to what your job would be. just from interacting with other students you can learn things related to their fields, plus you can easily find frequent speakers that visit campus to give speeches in a great variety of fields.

Chelsie

For the most part the professors here are fantastic. They are willing to give up their time to help you if you need it. Even more importantly most of the professors love the subject that they are teaching and that always makes class more fun.

Melissa

I really enjoyed the classes in the Family Studies and Human Services department. Classes like Human Sexuality were really interesting. There is a lot of open class discussion and interaction with the teacher.

Connie

The professors at K-State have many students, but if you take the initiative to meet them they will remember you. They are very much concerned about the academics that they are teaching their students. They take pride only in the fact that their students are succeeding. Some classes can be a little boring, but if you go in with the right attitude then you have nothing to worry about.

Michaela

I am an architecture student so my college experience is slightly different than the average students. I don't have regular lecture classes, I am in studio probably 75{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the time making models and rendering. Not only are we on a first name basis with our professors but we have their phone numbers and have called them outside of class on more than one occasion to ask them questions about projects, etc. The other first year students in my major are like a family. When we started out, there was approximately 180 of us, and now at the end of the first year there is close to 150 students left. We live together, work together, eat together, hang out together, get in trouble together. I love the people I work with and I think that makes a big difference because I enjoy going to class and I enjoy participating when 150 of my best friends are right there with me.

Austin

K-State is pretty big and the only thing bad about that is there is hardly any one-on-one time with your instructors but there's really not much you can do about it.

Harper

The professors of the smaller classes know our names, but not always in the really large classes. My favorite class would be Collegiate Chorale, since the director, Dr. Yu, is AWESOME!!!! My major is Pre-Vet/ASI in the college of Agriculture, and I enjoy it.

Alex

There are quite a few professors who know my name. Also, there is an honors program with smaller class sizes and very interesting course work. I took Honors Seminar Psychology in Film, a class of less than 15 people. It was a blast.

Alex

K-state has some of the best acedemics in the nation.... yes, the nation. You look at all the top scholarships won by K-state students year after year and it shows.

Abbey

The one thing that sticks out to me the most when it comes to academics is the fact that teachers DO care! When I first started at K-state, I was taking with me the stories of my elders, ones that including getting the shoulder from teachers who were ready to hand out as many F's as possible to getting kicked out of class because a student proved the teacher was wrong. Well, when it's finally my turn to experience this sort of thing, I found that it wasn't completely true to me. I've had teachers spend their own time helping me out with things like acting techniques and argument writting. One of my professors even answered questions during her lecture and gave us study guides for tests and mini quizes online to help us be better prepared for exams. I have to say, the expectations of students from way back has changed and most, if not all professors are willing to give you a hand if your willing to put forth the effort.

Blake

Classes at K-State are so varied. I had Natural Disasters, a class of 500 people, and then went across campus to my Shakespeare class of about 20. I had zero communication with my Natural Disasters class. I was just a body. But in my Shakespeare class I got to know the class and instructor. People at K-State are smart, but school is usually left in class, in the library, or at your desk. School isn't really brought to Aggieville or house parties. I'm an education major and I really like the way K-State's program is set up. I am actually an Ambassador to the College of Education. I know my advisor and she knows me. You have the same advisor all of college and they actually care. The curriculum is very organized and you get a wide variety of choices.

Barbara

Some of the lower level classes that everyone has to take are HUGE! You are just a number and you know for damn sure you can't get any 'special treatment' if your grade is 0.4{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} off from what you need to get a better letter grade. Luckily I can only think of one that was that narrow minded setintheways. Higher level classes are usually small and more fun because you can actually make a friend or two and enjoy some of the material taught. There are quite a few sucky teachers who make you fail just because they feel like it. Don't ever go in expecting to make good enough grades to have the GPA you need to get farther than graduation. Oh and transfer credits are a joke. They won't be factored into your cumulative GPA at all. Be warned! If you are a biology major you just missed the best teacher we had. He finally retired =( Although classes such as Mammology, Behavioral Ecology, and Biology of Aging are fun, small classes where the teachers know your name and a few of the students might also. Unfortunately, only the higher level classes give you any advice for the real world and even then they mostly leave that stuff up to the grad teachers.

Rachelle

Classes are fine, just drag yourself to class and you will be fine. Every class and every teacher is different. Your bigger classes the teacher may or may not ever know your name, the smaller ones within your major the teacher will often know your name and see you out and about in town and say hey.
