What are the academics like at your school?

Dana

Hale Library is really an amazing place. I go there at least three times a week, whether for projects, studying, or even for a quiet place to spend some down time. It is a beautiful building and there are many places to study, whether it's the more social main floor, the quiet zone with its vaulted ceilings and murals, or a quiet cubby that offers more privacy.

Alex

Overall academics are varied. If you are in a smaller class it is always always always better. In smaller classes the teachers do know your name and you get a better learning experience. So far my favorite classes have been Abnormal Psych and my Structures spanish class. Both Dr. Barnett in a big classroom and Angelique in a smaller class did a excellent job of involving the class and making the topic easy to understand as well as interesting. I have had some troubles with both the Psychology dpt. and the Spanish dpt. as far as enrolling for classes and everything else. However, i believe that part of that was because i was a transfer student and it was my first semester at ksu and the other part of it was that until now i was simply pre-psych and that i didnt declare spanish lit as my second major until part way through the semester.

Little something for everyone

Andrew

My professors have been great about knowing people in the class, and very approachable outside of class, and most importantly, they are more than willing to help students succeed.

Caitlin

The College of Architecture Planning and Design is sort of special at K State. All three programs are incredibly strong and prepare students well for the work force.

Matthew

In my major I have to submit a portfolio to get into my concentration. One of the big issues I have with this process is that until I get into my concentration I am being taught by GTA's and not professors. The professors are the ones that vote if you will actually get into your concentration, so I feel that more professor classes before the voting would be benificial.

Classes are organized well, with larger classes (300-900 students) usually being divided into a large lecture and smaller recitation classes, labs, or studios. This way students hear the material and then have a chance to get one-on-one help. The lecture professors are usually easily available for one-on-one help too, during their posted hours or if you just drop them an email. I have not had a lot of trouble with teachers with incomprehensible speech due to foreign accents. Many of them are foreign and have accents, but you get used to it very quickly and have no trouble understanding. Students definitely have intellectual conversations outside of class. I have many-a-time seen situations at parties analyzed with principals of physics by inebriated engineers. The academic standards are demanding, but anyone who puts forth the effort will be successful. A number of programs are available to help students succeed, such as free one-on-one tutoring.

Monica

Classes are alright, get much better your junior year when you finally get into your major's classes instead of general classes. I don't spend much time with professors outside of class but they are usually willing and available. Professors want to help you find a job.

Torry

The only issue I have with classes is the classes your required to take, like statistics, have foreign teachers and I spent most of my time trying to understand them and not the material. I honestly think this cost me a letter grade.

Paul

I have a couple favorite classes which are Calc 1 with Professor Moore, and Leadership studies in general. Students are competitive here and there is a mutual sense of camaraderie as far as succeeding in your studies go. Your professors are always there to help and they will work as well as they can to see to your assistance.

Chris

Professors were friendly and knew my name even though I may have had 50 or 100 classmates. They were always willing to take time to help me out, even when I knew they were obviously busy. Education at KSU is geard toward you getting a job when you graduate. I still count some of my professors as friends although I have long since graduated. The best class I ever took was a livestock production class (advanced beef) - no boring textbooks - actual tours of livestock industy companies and seminars covering real world topics.

Katie

My absolute favorite class at Kansas State was Sex and Health with Kelly Welch. I felt that this class was interesting and helped me to learn about the different things that students can go through in their every day life. Not only was it interesting by every class that I have taken with Kelly Welch has been fun and exciting. I feel that the academics at K-State are top notch. The professors actually care about their students and for the most part the classes are small. I think that having small classes helps to make the learning more personal and it is easier to ask questions.

sarah

The classes are typically small enough that you can get to know your teacher if you so choose. However, in the majority of my classes, I have had to make an effort to make a relationship with my professors and they have all been more than willing to help. My favorite class Human Body because my teacher, Dana Townsend, dedicated so much extra time into helping her students and making sure we understood/ felt that she cared about each of us.

Jerry

As a freshman, it's difficult to get acclimated to the large class sizes. But luckily the large classes tend to only be for Freshmen and Sophomores. By the time you have your major chosen, your classes shrink, your professors know you quite well, and you feel more acknowledged. Although, I will vouche for the larger class professors, they make themselves available to students outside of classes, making it easier to stand. I took a course on Harry Potter, moreover the impact Harry Potter had on society in general, but it was extremely hard, and absolutely amazing. K-State students often times get hired before they've even graduated. K-State is highly reguarded, and I am very impressed with how students deal with the academic side.

Amanda

At K-State for the most part I've had professors that know your name unless the class is a lecture style classroom with a larger amount of students. Even with a few of the lecture ones though, I've had professors that still remember the majority of the students names after awhile. My favorite classes are the Social Work classes I've taken because it is interesting because it's my major. But, a really interesting teacher to get is Kelly Welch who teaches FSHS classes like Human Development. She makes it so interesting and she's HILARIOUS.

Andrew

Despite large lectures for major classes, the professors seem genuinely focused on teaching undergraduate courses. Many stress their office hours and help sessions, and smaller recitation classes provide a very personal experience. The average grade in many classes and on tests is a C, and getting an A in many classes is an accomplishment. The range of classes offered is huge, both in the areas of extracurricular classes and within each major. The engineering college at K-State is widely regarded as very successful. With an expansive set of buildings and ample funding, the programs draw high schoolers from all over the world. However, the number of females in the programs is relatively small, with Electrical engineering being one of the worst offenders. However, upon completion of the programs, students genuinely seem to be ready for a real job.

Jenny

Classes seem to be a necessairy evil when it comes to college. Of course the lower level academic courses are going to be larger in lecture format but there are also recetations for the large classes that have a smaller class format. Also even though the classes in lectures are large for low level the teachers still know you and what to help you. As you get into higher level classes they tend to get smaller and once you are in your major courses you will have the same teacher over different classes which is always a postivie as you can truley get to know your teachers. The most unique class i have taken is Field Experience where i got to go and spend time in a grade school classroom two days a week. This really helped me to understand if my major was for me, as well as it was an enjoyable break from the "normal" class. Kansas State does want to gear you towards getting a job after college. They will help you to find internships and host job fairs throughout the year to help you find that job when it is time to graduate and move on from that college education.

Cassie

Professors are generally very intellegent and easy to talk to if you need help. But K-State is historically bad at making their math classes huge. They offer smaller once a week classes, but they are taught by TAs who sometimes don't care, or don't speak English. Math Classes should be taken elsewhere unless you excel at Mathmatics. All the other classes I took, I liked and enjoyed.

Andrew

I feel known in my department and appreciated in my college. Students have a positive attitude and a good work ethic to go with it, and the professors foster intellectual growth.

Jared

In smaller classes, the instructors do know names. I do not really have most or least favorite classes; I'm really just getting my general education out of the way. Some friends study hard, and others do not. Whatever they're study habits are coming out of high school seem to continue throughout college. There are some intellectual conversations outside of classes, but they all have to do with the students' interests. Students don't seem competitive, but they are alway willing to lend a helping hand.

Alex

Some of my professors know my name. The farther into my engineering career and into the semester I get, the more teachers know me. Some teachers really want to know everyone, others just have too many students and its not that big of a deal to them.

Alex

We have very wonderful and well educated staff. Many of our professors are highly distinguished outside of the campus and I am proud to learn from these individuals.

Royce

Differential Equations: Math 240 is very poorly organized. the Math department needs to reevaluate the objectives and the learning structure of the curriculum. The online portion of that class is so difficult to deal with it is impossible to get it right. The "parser" is so particular that it impairs learning the concepts and favors a specific keystroke. That needs to be examined immediately.

Lauren

K-State's class sizes are excellent, most are around 20 students except for some of the larger freshman general education classes which can be between 200-500 however, those classes are always accompanied with a smaller recitation period of 20 or so.

Alex

I've had a class with as many as 500 students once but most of my class sizes are between 12 and 30 people. Professors make an effort to know your name, but when you get above 100 students, it's kinda impossible. My favorite class I've taken at K-State was Cultural Anthropology, the professor was so interesting and we did a lot of fun things, I really learned a lot. My least favorite was definitely Biology, that class is super hard and K-State is known for that. Students should study as often as they feel neccessary to retain information for their classes. The important thing is to stay on top of assignments and don't let yourself fall behind. Class participation is not really a favorite, many students would rather just sit and listen. No one wants to be the first to speak up. I feel K-State is competitive which is good, we push each other to be the best we can. I'm in the college of education and K-State definitely strives to make sure everyone is ready for the classroom, so they do a great job of preparing teachers.

Christian

The academic life at K-State is as varied as it's students... literally. Every student has a different academic viewpoint. Some are very scholastic and study all the time, some go to class only because they'll fail if they don't. Some people don't go to class in spite of the threat of failure. Some people study when it's needed. Some people have a good balance between school and social life, and some unbalanced toward one side of the other. Really, the resources and opportunities exist to lead whatever academic life you want. It's college... do what you want, but live with the consequences and learn from your mistakes. That's what it's all about!

Justin

Nearly every one of my professors knows my name and that is a very reassuring thing. I love all my political science classes because they are obviously what interest me. I think everyone should take Human Sexuality because it is very informative and an easy A that keeps you interested everyday.

Krista

The professors here are amazing. Although most of the Intro. classes are pretty large if you make an effort to talk to and get to know the professor, they will do the same. Most of the upper level and major specific classes are at most 35 people. This way you can get to know everyone in the class and your teacher on a more personal level. When you walk around Manhattan you constantly hear people talking about classes and the new things they've learned that day. The best classes I've taken are probably the ones that challenge me the most. I recently took Social Problems and it was fantastic. There are so many theories and people to learn about that something new is constantly coming up. K-State is a great school when it comes to preparing you for future jobs, but some of the classes are designed purely to provoke thought and growth of knowledge. If there is any advice I could give to someone its just this... GO TO CLASS! I know everyone says the same thing and from personal experience, classes are much easier if you've been to them.

Leah

I have a lot of experience in both small discussion-type classes as well as large lecture halls. I find that unless you repeatedly introduce yourself (we're talking at least on a weekly basis) to the professors in the huge lectures, they're probably not going to know the difference between you and the other 400 students there. In the small classes of 20-25 students, though, I've always had great experiences with the professors. They get to know you on a first name basis, are willing to help you in their classes and in your extracurricular endeavors. These classes are the ones that students tend to put a lot more effort into.

Allison

Some professors know my name, but it is usually in my smaller more intimate classes. Large lecture classes of 150+ are extremely hard to know names. My favorite class this semester is microeconomics, but because of the course itself, but because of the professor. He is very crazy and makes class really enjoyable. How often students study is really up to the student themselves and how their course load is. Some study every night for 4-6 hours, others for 4-6 hours per week. Class participation again goes with the class size. It's harder to get 250 people to all participate in something together all at once. I believe that K-state students are intellectual inside and outside of the class room and in every day life. K-staters are competitive, but in a good way. They always strive to do their best and have as much sucess as possible. The most unique class I have taken is Leadership development. It was a class that did not act like other classes with just lectures and homework all the time, it allowed you to voice your opinon and participate at a higher level. My major is business management/administration. I am new to the major but so far I am really enjoying it and am looking forward to the classes that are ahead. I do spend time with professors out side of class by attending office hours when I need help or assistance on any given homework. paper, or other assignment. I believe that K-state education is geared both for learning and for the work force. They teach you so that you grow and learn, but they also help you towards your ultimate goal of what you want to do outside of K-state.
