What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Matthew

Aggieville is the most popular event at K-State.

I play in the Symphony Orchestra. This has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The conductor is fantastic. Good music is always chosen. It is a lot of work but worth it a hundred times over. It is a very social environment, as would be expected with any college campus. Students leave their dorm room doors open, and there is never a dull moment. Students who live off campus, even starting their first year, seem to have no trouble meeting people and becoming an integral part of the social scene. Fraternities and sororities seem to separate themselves from the rest of the student body for anything not academic. They seem to stay off in their own little world. If you are awake at 2am on a Tuesday, it is probably a typical tuesday. You may be studying, if it's right before an exam, or just chilling, quite possibly eating pizza, or walking back from aggieville.

Greek system is strong but may lose some of that strength with proposed regulations and rules. Athletic events are really popular, and guest speakers are usually full (many teachers use guest speakers as an opportunity for extra credit) Aggieville is awesome, and usually reserved for upper classmen over 21. There are a few bars that underage students can get in to, but they usually go to house parties, fraternity parties, etc. This way the bars are fun for the entire time you're 21, you're not sick of the scene by the time you're actually legal. Bars in Aggieville range from hippie joints to classy non-smoking places, so there's somewhere for everyone to go with their friends.

I am in ROTC and this requires a great amount of effort and fortitude to do well in. There is also Aggieville to the south which is where all the bars and some of the restraunts are. Faternities and sororities are good places to meet people but I am not part of one at the moment.

Chris

Plenty of greek life and GDI life as well. Athletic events are hugely popular as school spirit runs sky high. Guest speakers include presidents and other world leaders. Bar scene is first rate. Student lounge is a great place for fun non drinking activities. Lots of great restaurants. Manhattan is a pizza lovers dream.

Katie

I have met my closest friends through my sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. Greek life at K-State is huge with the majority of the school involved in a fraternity or sorority. While there are a lot of students are greek, life is not only about drinking like most would expect. The greeks are involved in Go Green and making the community of Manhattan a better place. I love the social life at K-State and have found when I go to visit friends at other schools that there is no social life that can compare to KSU!

sarah

There are so many ways to get involved at K-State. Greek life is a big part of social life at k-state, a large portion of students participate and enjoy every minute of it. There are also non- greek activities everywhere.

K-STATE FOOTBALL!!!! A big thing here on campus, reguardless of whether or not we're winning that particular season. Tailgating, cheering, student bonding, you name it, football provides it. It also brings the community into the college scene. The dorms tend to leave their doors open, most at least, especially the coed dorms. There is always something going on campus, whether it's a sporting event, something put on by the Union Program Council (they bring in different bands or acts etc.), or something put on by any of the other organizations. Aggieville is the major part of K-State social life. Although there isn't much to do if you're under 21, there are a few local bars that are 18 and over after 9 pm. Kite's, is the coolest sports bar ever, and the place to be when games are out of town. Fraternities and Sororities are... well I'm not involved in them. I have a few guy friends in Frats, but that's about it. They think they're big on campus, and I'm not really a fan of them. Some of them however are amazing groups of people... the tri delts i would suggest staying away from.

Amanda

On campus there are of course sororities and fraternities to get involved in, however there are many other ways to get involved. Just living in the dorms provides a bunch of friends and activities. I lived in Moore and my floor because very close and almost 2 years later, the majority of us still are good friends and my 2 roommates for next year are both from my Moore floor. I would recommend if you are a girl and want to make a lot of new friends not to live in Ford Hall just because I've heard from almost every other girl who's lived there that people don't really leave their doors open or socialize much probably because it's suite-style. Even if communal bathrooms don't sound great, it actually is a good thing and being in a co-ed, communal dorm myself, people on my floor left their doors open all the time and we even sang in the showers to our "communal" radio.

Andrew

Dorm life in general can seem fairly seclusive. On most floors, people leave their doors close and rarely socialize. However, on my engineering cluster floor, the environment is much more positive. Most of this is the work of our RA's. Athletic events are hugely popular at K-State, with the largest examples being football and basketball. The dating scene is OK, though nice restaurants are in short supply. Parties are extremely common on Friday evenings, as the dorms seem almost like ghost towns. Frats and sororities are common and popular, as many are wet. There are campus provided activities for the evenings on weekends, but not many people attend them.

Andrew

The Greek social atmosphere is awesome. Kansas State does a great job of encouraging interaction and making events fun for Greeks.

Jared

I not in any groups. A lot of the students leave their doors open, but the dorm that I live in, I either do not like most of the people that do have their doors open, or the doors are shut. Athletics, mainly football and basketball, are huge at K-State. There are guest speakers all the time. Most of my closest friends I have were introduced to me by my brother. If I am awake that early in the mornings, usually I play video games with a few friends at the dorms or doing homework. We have all kinds of traditions, my favorite: "The Wabash Cannonball". There are random people partying all the time. Last weekend, I went home and hunted a turkey and fished for walleye.

Alex

Athletics is a BIG deal here. If I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I am probably studying for a test in the morning or doing my laundry. People party every day of the week and definately Thursday through Sunday.

Paul

Fraternities and sororities are great for the campus. They provide an awesome opportunity for students to interact with others and develop life-long friendships. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience of the Greek life so far. I have met many people that I would not normally meet. Many of these people are going to help shape the rest of my life.

Alex

Manhattan is a very active little town. We have a bar/shopping/eating district right next to campus called Aggieville which gets pretty crazy on the weekends. I was a little turned off initially about how small Manhattan is, but have grown to love it and all its charm.

Royce

UPC does a good job but the main headliners need to be moved away from Wednesday nights. Shoot for Tuesday or Thursday and the attendance will double!

Alex

There are hundreds of groups to get involved in on campus. The most popular Christian organization is Navigators, it's a great way to meet people and grow in your faith. Hundreds of students attend. I'm also involved in National Residence Hall Honorary, Kappa Delta Pi (not a sorority, it's a honor society in the college of education), and Kansas National Education Association. Athletic events are HUGE at K-State, you definitely want to buy football and basketball tickets in order not to miss out! I met my closest friends through my roommate my freshman year, (I went potluck and it turned out great!) and then through my classes and other organizations, and the dorms. The greek scene is kinda overrated, you'll do just fine if you don't join! There's still plenty of people to meet and other things to get involved in. I like having my own space and not being cramped in a house full of people.

Christian

Social life is what you make it. Get involved.

Justin

Aggieville = pure sex

Krista

When it comes to the dorms, most people are extremely open to others. Most doors are usually open and everyone is super friendly. Most of my closest friends are people I have met through random chance. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday, its nothing abnormal for me. Usually I will be watching TV, hanging out with my roommates, or doing homework that I've put off or forgotten about. Athletic events are SUPER popular. Everyone loves to spend time with their friends at games and tailgating... along with sporting events comes Homecoming week. The greek community and the dorms have a huge week of competitions. There is Wildcat Request Live (WRL), Pant the Chant, Paint the ville, and the huge parade. The whole week is caped off with our Homecoming Football game. There is always a party to go to if you want to, but if you don't feel like drinking there is plenty to keep you busy as well. You can go to a movie, bowl, sing karaoke... almost anything you want to do.

Leah

Greek life is very popular on campus, though I am not involved with it and do not feel any outside pressure because of it. Another popular outlet are clubs related to major. K-State definitely does a great job finding ways for students with similar majors to get together and discuss career and class-related issues. And again, Aggieville is a popular fixture. Many students flock downtown to the bars on the weekends, hanging out casually with old friends, or possibly on a mission to find news friends and dating prospects.

Allison

Intermurals is popular to participate in on campus. Greek life houses a large amount of K-state students with-in their organizations. There are also many, many clubs that students are involved in, if it be with the residence halls, their major in particular, or special interest clubs. I am involved with the organization Association of Residence Halls, or ARH, where I act as president. We help with events, policies and other such things concerning the residence halls and their students. Many student in the residence halls leave their doors open, its a way of welcoming others in to talk, ask questions or just stop by. Athletic events are very popular on campus, a large amount of students attend such things as basketball games, football games, volleyball games, and so on. Guest speakers are also popular, but sometimes it depends on who is speaking. Theater is another even that is depends on the show for how much of a turn out it recieves, but I have attended many sold out showings here at K-state. I met some of my closest friends first in the residence halls by living down the hall from them or living in the same room as them. Also I ahve met many friends through my sorority Alpha Xi Delta. If I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I am probably studying or cramming for a test that I have soon. The amount people party at K-state is based on the individual person. Some like to go out many times in the week/weekend, others only once, and others not at all. I personaly believe that sororities and fraternities are a great way to meet many other people and be involved on campus and with other organizations. Last weekend, I mostly hung out with friends and finished any homeowkr I had to be done! If you do not drink there are still many things to do on a saturday night. One option that comes to mind is that the Student Union offers a movie on some Saturday nights for a small price that you can go see, you can also go out to eat, go to the rec, the list goes on and on. In my time off campus, I see friends, go out, go to the lake when its warm, shop, etc.
