What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Lynda

I have learned some very valuable information. What I am learning here is setting me up for success in my future endeavors. This experience is so valuable to me because it has taken me so long to figure out what I love to learn about. I can't wait to put my knowledge to work for a greater good.

Danielle

To ask what I have gotten out of my college experience is a loaded question. I feel that I have of course received an education in basics such as reading, writing, math, etc. But I think that I have learned something more important throughout my college career thus far. I have learned a lot about myself and through much discussion, usually ones that are awoken because of a disagreement, I have been able to examine my beliefs and convictions in life and the logic behind them and really understand why I believe the way I do. I have been able to look at life through the eys of others to see why they believe what they believe. This has given me a greater sense of who I am as a person and solidified my foundational beliefs even more so. Sometimes we have to put into words what we believe and why and that makes it come even more alive to us. This is the most valuable thing I have experienced in college so far. I hope to experience so much more!

Shelley

I learned that College is harder than expected. I didn't do so hot my first year in college because I played around like most first year college students. I found the field that is right for me now though and am working toward that goal with straight A's. I am attempting to get some help financially so that I can quit band. I love music and band, but my life would be much easier to use the time that Band takes up to study.

Chris

I am 37 years old and have experienced a great deal of life; at times putting me on the top of the world and others having me experience the worse loss and pain ever imagined. In all cases, I have gained and lost assets, made and spent money but the education I have gained in college can never be taken from me. The theories and experiences I had in college will stay with me a lifetime. These experiences will also allow me to continue on with rebuilding the rest of my life. My low times have cost me relationships, bankrupted me, and even cost me a house but now I want to make my comeback with the help of this scholarship to rebuild my life with education. Help me make this come true.

Christina

I do not regret the classes that I have completed as I work towards my Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice. However, I do regret the fact that I may have to withdraw for a period of time due to the absence of funds available to me. I love learning and it has been wonderful to feel as though I was working towards something. I hope to finish someday and find a job working with juveniles in order to give them opportunities and show them that there are people who can support them and who believes in them in a world where all they know is pain and fear.

Marsha

I have learned how to manage my time wisely. When I decided to get my degree, in my 50's, I was determined to complete this within 2 years. I am still on course but it will be well worth it when I am able to assist other brain njury survivors, like myself.

During my previous years in college, I felt that I was on the right path. On a path of accomplishing a great thing for me and my family. I felt that I was keeping a promise that I made to my grandfather, who has passed, and myself. I've found that I'm more motivated now than I've ever was to make sure that I complete college. Being laid off, looking for work and finding work in today's economy has made me value the benefits that college has to offer more . I've held and am currently holding a job that 's not utilizing my experience and skills. Not to mention , that I've had to take a pay cut of half of what I was making three years ago. Needless to say, I'm more motivated and truly, truly value what college has to offer. I'm also glad that it is not to late for me to keep my promise to myself and my grandfather.

Amanda

I have only been attending my college for a month now, but I have learned alot in just that one month. My Academic Strategies class has helped me to become more organized in both school and everyday life. My readings have taught me to manage time and to make to-do lists and keep up a calendar. I know this does'nt sound like much but, as a first year student it is very helpful to learn how to stay organized and manage your time to fit in school and still get household chores and such done. Kaplan University is very valuable to attend because it helps me get my education online so I can stay home and raise my son and wait patiently for my deployed marine to call me. Going to school online helps me teach my son new things, spend time with him, and act as both mommy and daddy since his father is currently deployed. Online school is truley a blessing.

Israel

If I look back at the knowledge that I had before attending Kaplan, I can see that I do have indeed learn much more that I was able to learn by myself; The professors and classes are designed so everyone can take it at our own peace as we consume and process the material provided and work in our assignments, which is a benefit for those with busy lives or work. I do not regret my decision to go into an University, as I now feel much more prepared for the future and to start developing my career path.

sheena

I haven't gotten to try the college experience, until now. I wanted a better future for myself and for my child i'm expecting in the next couple of months. However, i'm trying to get my degree online for the time being because of the lack of transportation to and from school and also trying to find a job for some source of income. When, I do get accepted into the virginia college online program it will be very valuable to me because after the program is completed i'll have my assosciates degree in criminal justice and my future will already be ten times brighter than these past two years of no schooling.

Brittany

Out of my college experience I have gained the ability to continue moving forward towards my dream rather it gets tough or not because in the end I will definitely get rewarded for the hard effort

Amy

So far I have gotten a lot out of my college experience. What I have gotten out of it is the fact that i know more about myself as a student. I learned time management, how I study best, how to keep my stress down, and I also learned that I love learning on line. My first term I met a lot of other students and we became friends. Even though my program is on line, I still am able to connect with other students. I've also gotten out of it is the fact that I know I can accomplish everything that I put my mind to. I learned that I can succeed. It has been valuable to attend this college because I want to get a degree and get into a good career. i know that without this college, I would not be able to do what I really want to do. It also has been valuable because I am able to learn so much and I will use everything that I learned when I get a good job. I hope that when i am finished I can get a job as a Medical office manager.

Maresa

College has been a valuable experience for me for a variety of reasons. First, college has challenged me to push myself to excel. As a homeschool student, I found that the college learning experience was drastically different from anything I was used to. The deadlines, in-class discussions, and constructive feedback were all valuable parts of my college experience. Each of these factors helped to drive me to excel by going above and beyond anything I had attempted before. Secondly, college gave me the motivation to continue to try to improve my life. Working two jobs and attempting to raise money for school has taught me the value of improving my quality of life. College has helped me to realize how much I love to learn - how new information and new experiences are an invaluable part of my life. Overall, college has taught me to be responsible, to have integrity, to stay motivated, and to love learning. College has been an invaluable part of my life and I hope to continue learning more in the future.

Arquelle

I'm not in college yet, but I would love to start right away.

Jacolby

Out of my college experience, i was able to learn alot about my major and was able to discover that it is a very interesting subject to learn and to make out of in my career later on in the future. Also I love the campus, it really gives me the feeling that im my own comfort zone and able to rely on myself, as far as a where I need to go, what I can eat, and my own schedule that allows me to go to the classes that I need to attend regularly. Along with my college experience, I'm able to have strong friendships with the other students, especially when we have things in common, whether, its the love for video games and art, or if we have similar problems or experiences in our personal lives. During my first year of college, I have learned to value anything and everything there, and it has given me the courage and strength to be able to make it on my own, and to bond with the right kinds of people that can allow me to move forward.

Shannon

I have previously attended a traditional college. I earned my Associates Degree in Nursing with a 4.0 GPA, in 2000. In the ten years since, I have learned many more things in the "institutions" of marriage, motherhood, grief counselor, and nursing among so many others. Now, as a working mother of 3 young children, I am finally able to complete my earliest formal educational goals. I intend to attend until I have earned my Masters Degree. I am able to do this now only because of Kaplan's online degree program. I have 3 young children. My youngest was born 16 months ago with a congenital heart defect. She is our angel! She requires lots of extra prayers, time, love, and so many medications. I also work, as I can, as a RN. So, physically attending school at specific times and dates is virtually immposible! Kaplan has helped make my dreams come true by offering me access to all the education I need and desire right from my living room! I can use my advanced nursing degree to help so many others in my future career! I am so grateful to Kaplan for finally making my goals achievable.

Anthony

I have been attending college for a few days now and it is wonderful. I am getting started on a new career. I am doing all of this for my daughter. It has made me more of a man than I was and also a better father.

Patricia

I have learned I need to find a school that will be trustworthy and help me get my degree instead of ripping my lifelong dream away from me.

Earlie

My college experience has taught me, you are never to old to go to school. Learning is a never ending process of life. To stop learning is to stop living. I have learned that I can achieve anything I put my mind to and have gained self-confidence I thought I had lost. When I lost my father to lung cancer last year, I felt my life had no purpose. I wanted to make him proud of me and now it was too late for him to see me succeed. Then I thought of school and realized this is what he had wanted for me. He was a highschool dropout at the age of 16. He had to work the railroad to support his mother and brothers. When I was in highschool he wanted to be something more and received his GED. He didn't stop there. He went on to complete several college classes and received an Associates degree himself. When I thought of his life, I realized how much more he tried to give me. So here I am, back in school and this time I will finish and make my parents proud.

Renee

This university has been very valuable to me because it has changed my life. I find myself organized and self sufficient in my everyday tasks. Not only has college helped me straighten my life out, it has given me the chance to learn about my passion towards helping, and educating children! When I babysit kids in my neighborhood, I find myself excited when I recognize what to expect and how to interact with them more so then I had before I began college. I have only begun my experience with my school and am already noticing what college can do for me in my life. I believe attending has been beneficial for me in many ways as I conduct myself professionally in my work and in my intellectual conservations with friends and family. Overall, this experience has taught me that with hard work, determination and willpower, I can truly set my mind to anything I want to do or be. My mother never got the chance to go to college, which she regrets to this day as she struggles finically. That is why I value my college experience; I want to ensure that I will not have any regrets.

Cynthia

I receive knowledge from my courses, and it is a good reason to attend for a better life.

Brenda

Kaplan University has a BS Forensic Accounting/Auditing Program designed for future forensic accountants. After completion of my bachelors, I will be well equipped with the academic knowledge needed to pursue my dreams in the forensic accounting entity.

Tammy

Having graduated from high school 29 years ago and having taken college classes periodically throughout that time, I understand the importance of an education. After my divorce, I decided that I needed to return to school to continue my education, both for my own betterment and as a role model for my two children. I feel it is imperative that they see the importance of an education beyond high school and the best way to teach that is by example. I have gained better personal insight about myself and the goals and needs of others throughout my studies. I anticipate completing my courses and acquiring skills to assist me in my next role, as a mentor/counselor/advocate for children. Without this experience, both as a student and as a mother, I could not have understood the importance of an education and its value in my life and my children?s lives. I believe the value will continue to be apparent as I progress throughout my career, hopefully having a positive impact on those I encounter.

Jennifer

Attending college for the third time has made me wished I had stuck with it the first time. I am married with a child now and it is a lot harder to attend school when you have a family. Not only that to find time to look for scholarships, do homework and house work, and spend quality time with my husband an daughter. I do enjoy college more now when I am older because it is my adult conversation for the day. I have a two year old and I am a home maker. I love talking with my daughter, but it isn't as intellectual as class discussions. It is valuable to attend college because it shows my duaghter that women to go to college and can still be mommies.

Brittany

I beive that every person should have to opportunity to an education and I love going to school. I am able to pursue a career that makes me happy and for the rest of my life I know that I will have a degree. That is one of the best feelings in the world and when I finally do finish, that is something that no one can take away from me.

Alexandria

I have learn that college is not for everyone but it is a great way to better yourself, even if you are not planning on using your college experience in the work place.

sharon

I was previously a salon owner until I became ill and could no longer stand on my feet to make a living. Without a job, especially in a downward economy where my husband's income had dropped by two thirds, I was becoming depressed. I saw a commercial about Kaplan Online, but had never been to college and didn't know where to begin, they helped me with everything and were so kind. The dust has been removed from my brain. Skills that I had previously enjoyed but pushed aside, as in writing and researching, have been restored. I look forward to school even though it is difficult, and I believe that soon I will have a valuable career in a growing field. I cannot imagine feeling hopeless forever with no security for a future, and going to college has taken away any hopelessness and fear of my future. I hope it is also a subconscience message to my son, that one is never too old for a new start.

frank

My long term goal is to attend law school. I am currently studying legal studies at Kaplan University. I hope to attain my BS in legal studies which hopefully will lay a firm foundation upon which to build andfurther my education in law school.

Susan

College has taught me that though a mother has to learn to be flexible, a time manager, and jack-of-all-trades, students have mountains that are sometimes insurmountable to climb. Many parents simply have forgotten with age or my case, never knew existed, the struggles of our young adults. I thought going to school was the cakewalk while my job as mother, breadwinner and homemaker was difficult. Learning is hard and my return to school has been a challenge. While it appears the student?s soak up their studies like a sponge, it takes me twice as long to grasp the same material. They are truly inspirational, the young adults I?ve met during my experience have taught me just how involved school is beyond studying; they are learning to save our world. Additionally, being a fulltime mom, I am a living demonstration to my two teenaged daughters the value of getting an education early in life before children. The value of my degree will be reflected when I am in the position to help them obtain theirs.

Sheena

Before I attended college, I cared less about where my life was going. I hated high school for my poor grades. It was like once I started failing, it kept getting worse and the less I cared about it. With college I was given another choice to rise above myself and give myself a purpose in life. I didn?t want to flip burgers for the rest of my life. I wanted to be somebody who was confident in what she was doing and enjoyed every minute of it. I never had a rich life with money as a kid, only rich experiences. I wanted that to continue by taking what I have learned and will learn and put it to the test with the real world. The education is just a bonus within this experience that I will be getting out of going to this college and the people I meet along the way.

Daniel

College requires courage and motivation. These two attributes have guided me through a great deal of experiences. One will never know all the opportunities available to him or her without the courage to discover and explore the many courses and situations a college campus provides. It is also through motivation and passion of what you discover as your calling or career that will allow you to endure and strive through all the challenges a college workload has; such as papers, readings, projects, reports, and exams. While at my college I choose to study physics and engineering because they peaked my interest and imagination. Understanding why and how things work whether in nature or in a lab grants me satisfaction. I am confident in my choice of study, and I believe it will lead me to a comfortable and enjoyable career. College paves our path to the real world as a time to experiment and make mistakes, all in search for the next step in one's life. What you gain from a college experience will prepare you for the vital moments that will shape your future.

Lisa

I will be able to obtain a long over due associates degree in Information Technology and we able to provide my daughter with the life that she deserves.

Kathy

I have had many positive outcomes from my college experience: Besides the ability to earn more money in the professional world, there are the friends that you make, the experience and challenges of learning new things. I try to find value in all things that I partake in, whether it is a positive or negative experience. If I do not receive the grade that I want I work even harder for the next assignment, learning from your mistakes as you go. This is a very valuable life lesson. If I can ?breeze? though a class and someone else is struggling I take the time to mentor that person. According to many experts, everyone should partake in mentoring. That is anyone who hopes to have a successful career. This is another valuable life lesson.

Isabelle

The time I have spent at my two-year community college has been a priceless experience. The education I have received has impacted me far beyond my expectations, and has changed the way I see the world. Every course I take opens a new window to the world. Philosophy has helped me explore myself. Public speaking has given me the courage to converse with anyone. Biology has helped me understand my surroundings and art appreciation has inspired my creative passions. As each of these subjects calms my hunger for learning, they begin to form a chain. Suddenly the material we have been going over in earth science class is cross-referenced in a book I am reading in psychology. I get feverish with excitement and often find myself exclaiming, ?we just learned about this the other day in class!? I love learning, and thrive for the opportunity of challenge. I often discover the connections between speaking publically and thinking critically while examining bacteria under a microscope. My experience excites me for the future. I eagerly look forward to discovering more connections between ?unrelated? subjects.

Since I started at Kaplan my life had changed. I learn not to take things so serious and that nothing comes easy in life and if you want something you have to work for it. The courses that I have taken I really feel that they will be useful in my career. I also have met a lot of new people some of them I have become friends with. I feel that I have grown so much while attending Kaplan. I feel like I could go out and get any type of job.

Darcie

I have gotten many things out of my college experience; dedication, discipinle, structure and an advancement of knowledge in my field of choice to better prepare me for graduate school. It has been valuable to attend because without my education I would not be able to become a doctor. In order to succeed at my goals, I need an education. The dedication and discipline that I have learned by attending college helps me for my future. The stucture helps me with being able to obtain my goals. Education has always been extremely important to me and I value my education. Being able to work with other students and see their ideas helps to expand on my own and view things outside of my own perspective. Working in the externship that was provided by my previous school gave me a step into the backgrounds of what goes on in a medical practice. Everything I have learned along the way and everything I will learn yet to come will give me a great opportunity to be able to succeed as a doctor.

Robert

A sense of accomplishment and self-worth that I haven't felt from anything else in awhile! Confidence, happiness, humbleness, Avery good job with good pay, job security, some admiration from others! Useful skills learned to use in a professional setting and volunteer and help others. Knowing I can take care of myself and be on my own during college. Student loans were worth it and have since paid them off as planned. Friendships! Great memories! The greatest benefit was the completion of a long term plan/goal. Realizing because of college that there are a lot of things I can accomplish if I want to.

Beverly

My college experince has taught me to embrass myself. I was always afraid to come out and tell everyone what I wanted to be when I grew up because each time I had told someone they gave me the same look without fail. So over time I just stop telling poeple and gave them a simple answer. I have heard countless times of people who wanted to be a fireman or a doctor but never have I heard someone tell me that they wanted to become a Advertisment Executive. Ever since I was in middle school, I knew this is what I wanted but I grew tired of the looks. The look that made me feel that maybe being so different wasnt such a good thing. So I went on telling people I wanted to be a Lawyer instead, so that I wouldnt have to taged as different. However, being in college has made me realize that being different isnt always such a bad thing. I learned to embrass who I am and college has given me something that I didnt have before which is a sense of self which is the most vauble reason to attend.

Amy

I?ve learned that I work tirelessly to complete my academic goals, and beyond, and don?t skip a beat, in fact, start looking for my next challenge. Even though the online classes allow for a bit of flexibility, I don?t let myself sleep more than eight hours as I have such a yearning to proficiently meet my various obligations, both within school, and within my honor?s program, which includes volunteering, and student mentoring. Through my years, I have strived as lengthy and as intense as I can to achieve valuable values in both discipline and humanity today. Stimulating my fellow peers to thirst for wisdom encourages my individual expedition to take in the human race and the society all over the place. In addition to my contribution in scholastic and tutor situations, I am dynamic in exercise, which only adds health to a student?s mind, in my opinion. I have also volunteered as a Mother?s Day Out teacher, as part of my Honor?s Student Program commitments. The ethical structure that I hope to implant in them will last them their whole lives. I find establishing a constructive model for these young children extremely gratifying.

Meghan

My education is very valuable to me. I believe that a good education is needed in order to have a rewarding, successful life and career. Therefore, I take school very seriously and believe in working hard now will pay off in the end. I have learned a lot about myself and what I want in life. I have discovered what I find interesting and what I want to do with my life. I truly love learning and have found the science classes the most interesting. This has influenced me to enter the health field and go into medicine so I will be able to use my knowledge to help others. In order to achieve my ultimate goal of becoming a Physician's Assistant, I realize that I need to work very hard in school and not take my education for granted. I believe that this mindset will help me accomplish everything that I want to accomplish and any help financially will be not be taken for granted.

Aristotle once wrote "the roots of education are bitter but the fruit is sweet," and I myself have found this to be true. I am a twenty years old and have suffered with childhood depression and asthma. I look back at my highschool years and wonder how I got through them. In the past that I did not even want to continue. I would ask myself, am I really worth it? I ventured beyond theses negative thoughts once I entered college. I realized I was put on this earth for a reason and I did this with not only the help of a wonderful family, but some amazing educators and students. In my second semester of college I was enrolled in a Speech class which truly changed everything for me on an emotional level. I gave a five minute speech on the struggles I have been through. I realized at that moment that my life is nothing to be sad about. I discussed my childhood more openly then I ever have before, and after that speech a student and stranger honestly said to me "you are worth it ." Overall College has been a great stepping stone for my future endeavors.

I actually returned to college after not being in school for four years, so it was a major kick in the butt. I realized that it is nothing like high school. Nobody slows down for you or gives you special treatment. I also realized that you have to have a certain degree of motivation and the drive to want to better yourself. If you don't then you are just waisting your time and neglecting someone else their right to be in your spot, and they actually want to learn.

Jessica

My college experience so far has helped me grow and mature as a young adult. It hasn't been easy for me since I have to work 25 - 30 hours a week while attending school. I see great value in education. With knowledge comes power and you can never have too much knowlege in my opinion. Learning and growing keeps me motivated and enthusiatic about what is to come. Completing college is very important to me as I will be the first in my family to earn a college degree. Neither of my parents optained one. Community college has taught me that taking multiple courses and doing the best I can to achieve good grades while working is helping me build my character. For each course I complete, I feel a sense of accomplishment. This has given me more self confidence and belief in myself that I can do anything that I set my mind to. During my journey at community college, I realized I have a love for art, I also have a good eye and am detail oriented. Continuing my education to study graphic design while attending Otis Art School is very important to me and my future.

Rene'

I have gotten the chance to get a promotion at work simply by enrolling and being accepted at Kaplan University-Online.

Renee

I have learned many aspects of the law while attending college. I have learned many issues that rest inside the justice system and that it takes more than just the government to fix them. In order for the justice system to work, it takes citizens of the United States to be involved as well. I have also learned that a higher education not only gets you respect from other people, or just your children, that it gives you more of an inner self respect. Since I have been attending classes, I have felt better about myself. When I recieved my Associates Degree in January, it felt like the biggest accomplishment that I have ever done. And to have my children tell me how proud they were of me, felt great.

Sara

Deciding to return to school and pursue a college education has changed my life in many ways. Some of the benefits are obvious; such as learning how to schedule time more effectively, boosting self confidence, and gaining a background to progress with a future career. The more subtle quality that keeps me coming back is the ability to think outside the box. I find that in all areas of my life I am better able to cope, problems solve, and see other viewpoints as a result of my education at Kaplan.

Christine

I have gotten a new sense of priority since I have been attending college. I have become more positive about myself and am drivin to do better and to succed.

Laura

When an accident left me disabled, I wondered if I was going to be able to work again in a career that I had planned since I was a little girl; nursing. Injuries to my leg prevented walking without severe pain and I remained under continual treatment. With an ADN, I believed if I obtained a BSN, more opportunities could be possible since I would likely not be able to work at bedside again. Thankfully, nursing offers multiple careers in different areas with continued education. I easily made my decision, set up a Stafford loan, and enrolled in distance learning. During the first term, we started a Professional Development Plan which required us to carefully examine our personalities and characteristics. Using that knowledge, we were to determine our personal and professional goals and how our educuation might affect those goals. For me, that examination was life-changing as I realized I could not reach my goals until I amputated my leg! Everything I wanted to do in life depended on my leg healing, and I did NOT have that assurance. My education and that assignment, I value to this day so I can further my career in obatining my MSN!

chrystal

I have been able to advance in life educationally and mentally. To me without school I wouldnt have achieved the things that I have now and have a career. I strive to be very successful and in order for me to achieve my goals I have to continue school.
