Kaplan University-Hagerstown Campus Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Lisa

The students at my school are wonderful. The student population of racial, religious, LGBT, socio-economic and other backgrounds are diverse. I can't imagine someone not feeling welcome during their time at Kaplan University. We never see each other during our live seminars or in the classroom. We interact with each other on discussion boards, where we show respect, even when a difference of opinion exist. During seminars we listen to the Professor and view the whiteboard presentation along with our typed comments in real time. This really takes a lot of the politics and pressure out of the classroom environment. We have honor societies and clubs just like you'd find at a brick and mortar institution. As for what to wear to class, that is up to you...

All of the students are so diverse. Everyone has different experiences and lives in different places. Students don't have interactions like a traditional campus with dorms and dining halls. However, this allows students to live their lives, work and raise families while gaining a degree.

Anibal

Student are Great, I make a ton of connection and some of them have there own company in other word there success and responsible student.

Linda

I love going to school with the students that I do. Having all of my classes online gives me the opportunity to get to know people from all over. You get perspectives on different races, religions, etc. I have had students from every state and multiple countries. They differ in every aspect. I go to school with people who are 18 and up. In my last class there was a 57 year old. You can definitely get diversity here. Nobody ever feels out of place.

I have had great success in academics. The Professors call you by your name when you are communicating with them through your seminars, DBs, and e-mails. My favorite class so far would have to be Interpersonal Communications. This class is explaining mnay ways of communication and how aand what we should consider when communicating with people. My least favorite class was Math. I am not very good with numbers. I don't know about other students but I study at least three times a week. You do have opportunities to have study groups. Class participation is very common. The most unique class I have taken is Honors, Social Perspectives of Death and Dying. My major is Early Childhood Development. The school's academic requirements are fair and accessible. Kaplan University wants your learning to coincide with you getting a job in your area of study. They also have job listings which they e-mail to you in your area.

Dee

I would say that Kaplan is such a huge melting pot when it comes to the student body. We have people of all ages, lifestyles, economic backgrounds and experiences that attend classes here. We have parents, high school graduates, miliraty personnel, former and current police officers. It really is a very diverse school.

Christopher

A lot of students strive to do well in academics in order to be invited into an academic group.

The best thing about attending on online school is that you come in contact with individuals from all enthic backgrounds and from all over the world! I've been in class with other students that are just graduating high school to indivdiduals who are in their fifties and starting over in life. Furthermore, I've been able to develope deeper relationships with some of my classmates and after class stayed in contact via social media.

LaNessa

They are simply the best.

Samantha

My school accept students from different background, race, color socioeconomic status. As long as a student come to learn and abide by the rules of excellence, all will be great.

SHELLIA

The students at my school are all different ages, different races, different social backgrounds and have varying religious beliefs. I do not believe that anyone would feel out of place at this school. My first class after thirty years away from school was scary but everyone put me at ease and made me feel welcome. In our online environment I could not say what people wear to class it could be from uniforms from work, pajammas, shorts or a mix in between. The lady I have become good friends with in Vegas is black and I am white but too me color does not matter it is the person within that matters. We at Kaplan try to make everyone feel comfortable and at home here . We have a lot of service men and women who are going while still serving their country which I give them my deepest thanks and gratidue. The four tables in the dinning room are filled with students of all ages and nationalities. At the first table we have a 19 year old bllack girl a thirty year old white business owner , a black male service member. At the second table we have a 24 year old father from the virgin Islands, and a fifty five year old asian business executive. The third table is filled with four women enjoy a break together. We have a 55 year old disabled black woman, a fifty two year old disable white woman who used to drive a truck, we have a 24 year old from greece, and a 19 year old from Brooklyn. . At the fourth table we have two 24 year old African Americans and a twenty year old Mexican american. The financial backgrounds are as varied as the ages and nationalities are. In one class I have a African American woman who has her masters in accounting and owns her own business and is backing taking certificate training. We have a 65 year old business man, I am disabled but beofre becoming disabled I worked in the restraunt industry for fifteen years then for a change of pace drove a truck across country for ten years. We have housewives, waitress, fast food workers many different occupations and finnacial stability. The only time I have ever heard of students talking about how much money they could make or want to make is when wee had to do it for an assignment. Next week in my management class we have to look at different fields their qualifications and salary.I would say that most of us at Kaplan are focused on learning as much as we can.

Beverly

Thestudent at Kaplan University are awesome everyone seems to get along quite well, we have developed a team of Tech student that we help one another when we can, our communication is just as great, as well as enjoy a challenge when it come to class assignment.

Paul

I attend Kaplan as an online student as do my fellow students and I have found that most of us have responsibilities outside of school, such as full time jobs and families, that prevent us from attending a traditional college. We do have some chance of getting to know one another as we have to post on weekly discussion boards, attend online seminars in chat rooms, or work on team projects throughout the week. Most of us are pretty focus on getting our work done and we all treat each other with a great deal of respect.

Georgia

I do not know how the student environment is on an actual campus. I know that I can attend my classes in my birthday suit or in my pajamas!

Jason

Starting answering! Here at Kaplan we are all here trying to better ourselves I truly feel we do not look at race religion or even sexual preference. I think the majority of us are seeking how to keep our grades up. One of the great things about online courses is an individual can wear what they want. The students interact well with another for it is required in our discussion posts. Furthermore the students can be from any walk of life.

Stephanie

The students that I have worked with have been great. I have attended many different classes with the same students. This allows you to get to know the people that you are attended classes with. It also makes it great when you have to do a project since you may already have a rapport built with some of the students.

Marlena

The students at my school are very interactive. I speak to everyone and when I do it is nothing but nice and actual conversation. They are very sociable and when it comes time to learn they feel the same as I do. No one interrupts the professor during class and we all take our time and helps eachother out when we don't understand something.

Karla

One of the great things about going to school online is that you do not know any minority status of a classmate unless they discuss it. There is no discrimination., When you are in class you are all equals.

Katherine

All the students that attend Kaplan are students that you have something in common with. They are either parents that need to attend school online to help take care of their kids or they are students that have jobs and only have time for online schooling. The only students that stand out are the students who do not participate in class with the other students. Everyone that is taking the classes are all involved with you. Everyone communicates with everyone. Everyone shares their life experiences that have to do with the field they are entering. Other students will also give you their opinion of what they think about the topic that they are leaning about. I was scared to go to an actual school but with Kaplan and being online I feel more comfortable meeting and getting to know my fellow students because the Kaplan online students do not judge you. And by them not judging you by first sights makes getting along with other students easier and learning from everyone more of a great experience!!

ValerieAdam

There is no racial, religious or grouping in Kaplan University. Everyone is uniform in what they want from the school. The students are there to achieve their dreams and that is their priority.

Dalen

The students in Kaplan have been great. Because we are not able to really interact on a face toface basis, it makes it a little hard to interact. I think that we are all on the same page as far as goals and what we are in class for. They are all willing to help each other through classes. Because student are from different parts of the country you are able to learn the different cultures around the United States.

Shelby

I have met students that I have gained lifelong friendships with and all students treat each other with respect!

Stephanie

Students at Kaplan are of all ages and backgrounds. Some are working adults, some have children, and some are right out of high school. There are military personnel attending from all of the world.

Carinn

One great thing about getting your degree online, is that you do not have to worry about fashion or your appearance. Most of the students that I worked with, were hard working and willing to learn from others. I have connected with many of my classmates through facebook and exchanced phone numbers. This has helped for last minute questions about assignments. I know that I can turn to these friends (classmates) and they will help me figure out the answer. We work together as a group to encourage eachother to get our work done. And as I have said before, many of my classmates have experience in the field, so I have learned a great deal from them. Overall I have found all of my classmates to be helpful and encouraging.

Linsey

I can't really tell you what type of students the school has because Kaplan University welcomes everyone!

Eric

As far as students are concerned there isn't much to say. Everyone is casual and very friendly to say the least. As I said before most students seem to come here out of a last resort and some of us, me included, were suckered into coming here by the lies of the admissions department. It seems as though all students get along relatively well, however, given the extreme variations of intelligence and common sense.

James

The students are like family. We communicate very well with each other. There are no group assignments or group projects at Kaplan, but we stay in contact with each other very well. If someone has a question about an assignment, seminar, etc we make sure everyone in the class gets the information via email, phone call, text or anyway possible. Most of the students are from all over the country. There is a large part of the student body in the military so they attend online class overseas. Being a single parent, attending online is easy for me. There are many other students like me who are single parents or just dont have time to go to a classroom. This is why we have such a common bond among one another.

Cindy

The online Kaplan I have come to know well, has many different people, we all come from different back grounds, different religion. That's what makes Kaplan a wonderful experience.

Aaron

We are a unique and diverse group of adult learners that in many ways understand what we need to do as students, now that we are older, that when we were fresh out of high school. Also we generally want to be active participating in our education to get the most out of it.

Angela

Students at Kaplan University Online are from all walks of life. From high school students entering college for the first time, to single moms trying to make a better life for their family, even members of our military attend Kaplan. An online setting takes away all of the social stressors found at traditional campus based universities.

Melanie

One of the best things about an online environment is that you do not have the racial ,religious, or socioeconomic prejudice you might experience on campus. I wear my pajamas to most classes and am relaxed in my recliner with my books, paper and pencil. If I get hungry during a seminar I eat, if thirsty I get a drink. Most students are very driven in their career goals are very excited to complete their studies and excel in the online environment. I have met some awesome individuals both facility and peers. For me Kaplan has been a blessing.

marlon

I have not had a bad experience in school with any student or faculty. Witht he exception of one time but it was a simple misunderstanding and it was resolved. Any student looking for a good time and not serious about their education would feel out of place in school.

Linsey

It is a very diverse group in my classes, and I love it. I enjoy hearing different points of view and learning different cultural things. I like online classes because people aren't judged by their looks, how they dress, or what they drive. All we can see is their great work and discussions. The students are from everywhere from California to Virginia. This is another great advantage because we can learn about different job availability and all kinds of things from different places around the U.S.

Gina

This question is kind of hard to answer since I am only online. I don't ever interact physically with any students. I do feel in our discussions that there are many different people that all have different views on a subject. This is great for having a discussion and to read how others react to certain topics. Most are in the same boat as me trying to better themselves and find a job.

Alicia

Attending Kaplan University's online campus is a great way to meet new people. There is no such thing as the "typical student" at Kaplan. There are students from all over the nation. I was afraid that taking 3 years off after high school would make me the oldest in my class who procrastinated and didn't do the "right thing", which is attending college right out of high school. I was proven wrong. There were students younger than me, yes, but there were also students all the way up into their 60's. I was shown that you're not a "loser" just because your life lead you somewhere else after high school. All that is important is that you have chosen to further yourself in your career and in your life by attending college. The students are supportive, friendly, and helpful. As Secretary of the KU Ambassadors and Leaders Group I have learned just how great the students at Kaplan are. People are always helping each other; in the classrooms, seminars, with homework, etc. I've also made many friends that I hope will be life-long. It is just a wonderful thing to know that you are surrounded by people going through the exact same challenges as you and who are ready to help when they can.

Samantha

Students mostly interact in professional manners. It is rare that a student attacks or discriminates against other students as there is zero-tolerance for this type of action. Discussion boards are open to all opinions and if topics go into that semi-red area where students may be offended, the professors remind everyone that there is no wrong or right answer to a question on opinion, and to respect each other's ideas. For me, I enjoy learning how other's feel about different situations and consider how their ideas are accurate.

Sara

I do not think there is any student that would feel they are out of place at this school. Being an online school, the diversity is quite large. You get people that are from various backgrounds. The great thing about online schooling is you can attend seminar in your pajamas if you wanted. There is no dining hall to worry about, most classmate interactions are during discussion boards and seminars. The students have been very nice and very helpful.

Brandon

The majority of students at Kaplan are female. They are primarily made up of stay at home mothers. I often am in classes where I'm the only male there, which can be very strange and make one feel like they're walking on egg shells. There are also a good bit of "bible thumpers" going to this school. You will occasionally run into the God fanatic that will make your learning experience miserable. There are also some students from out of country. There is also a lack of spelling ability with a good part of the students I've had the pleasure of being with in classes (as well as bad grammar). Everyone isn't perfect, but they do make spell checkers and grammar checkers for this. You do have the potential of meeting new "friends" with Kaplan, but since this isn't a traditional campus, your only outlets are social sites or if they trust you enough over the phone conversations.

Michael

Students at Kaplan come from all walks of life from young to older, single and married. Not everyone is always going to mesh with everyone else but, there seems to be something here going a long way toward mutual respect. We're all here for one reason. To get that degree and go out into the world and make our mark. Having that one goal seems to bring everyone to the same cross roads. As a whole, life here is good.

Rebecca

Students at Kaplan come from all over the world. In the online environment students are able to work, raise families and travel, as long as they remember to pack their laptops. Kaplan even has a vast group of people that are currently serving in our military.
