What is the stereotype of students at your school? Is this stereotype accurate?

Rachel

Since I am doing an online program....I think that a stereotype is that students are all workers with families and careers who are trying to expand their education. I find a lot of my fellow classmates all have such experiences. But that makes it wonderful! I have had the honor of learning with those in the military, parents, grandparents and various careers. It brings many different perspectives to the table.

I do not think that there is a stereotype as you might think like geeks or jocks but rather I think that there are people who assume going to school online is easier. I can tell you that this is not accurate. I have been a student for a little over three years now and while I love being able to turn in my work at different times of the day nothing else is easier. You have to be self-disciplined and know how to manage your time. You do not go to a classroom where you can sit down and have someone looking at you telling you to do this. So in conclusion there will always be stereotypes wherever you go but that does not mean you should listen to them. I know I am glad I didn't.

Stereotype at Kaplan University are everyday people there is not an accurate stereotype is very diverse.

Tamara

Since I'm an online student I have come to learn that the most common stero-type would be the 'Dinosaurs' such as myself. The older students.

Katherine

I don't think there are stereotypes attached to Kaplan University. I have never heard of any.

Dee

I think people have the misconception that online students have it easier, when in fact we really don't. We have strict deadlines that we have to stick to. If our work isn't submitted on time we get penalized for it. Unlike on campus schooling, if we miss a class we have to make it up or we lose points for that as well.

Lissete

I study online, however, from the friends I have made most are parents. Parents is not a stereotype, but I don't believe the typical stereotype fits in this new era where school is done online.

Christopher

There is not really a stereotype at my school as everyone is there to complete schooling while living there life.

Jose

Well I feel as though that there's different kinds of people that attend my school. There's people that work a nine to five job to people that have been in some kind of army or military branch part of their life.

When I tell individudals that I attend college I often get asked the question where? Once I tell them I attend Kaplan Univeristy and my program is 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} online I get comments such as "online colleges are cookie cutter school", "online is easy", or "can you really get a real degree"? Most people steroytpe online students as being lazy. However, this type of steroptype is far from the truth! My boyfriend attends a local college and after hearing his experiences I have never seen such an unorganized college! He made the comment to me a few days ago that he can see why everyone looks so upset when they do graduate from his college. I am very impressed my Kaplan University and feel that I am getting top notich education from highly trained professors! I proudly tell everyone that I attend Kaplan Univeristy!

At Kaplan University online, there is no stereotyping in our class forums. We all share our different opinions, and we respect each other.

SHELLIA

Since I am an online student it is hard to say about the different sterotypes that can be found at Kaplan. I can say that that there are students from all walks of like, all ages, and at all level of experiences. I am in the Information technology field so I could say we were all geeks which is the sterotype for it. But I have found that you cannot lump all people interested in technology as geeks. Take me I do not think I should be considered a geek just because I have an interest in learning the ever increasing technology of today. I find technology very interesting and enjoy learning more about it.

Michel

Since attending Kaplan University online, I have noticed that there isn't a sterotype here. We come from a variety of backgrounds and environments. I have met other students that are parents and achieving their degree here as well as others who work fulltime and find this the best way to achieve their education through Kaplan. We do have our share of comedians though, which makes class even more lively.

The thing I love about Kaplan University is the fact everybody I talk to, whether it be staff or students, are that they seem happy all the time. Distance learning gives me the opportunity to interact with many different people quickly. The downside is that I never really get to develop a substantial relationship with them because we are always moving on to something else. Another class, or another tool we need to learn gets in the way of personalization. The typical student, in my opinion, is someone like me who is taking advantage of a unique opportunity to learn through the internet where we might not have had the chance to do so because of our geographical location. I can't say enough good things about Kaplan. I'm really happy to be here.

Georgia

Since I attend Kaplan in the online environment, I have often been told that I am just too lazy to go to an actual campus. I truly think that this stereotype is definitely incorrect because you have to be disciplined to attend classes online. You have to be focused and committed to your education in order to be successful on an online environment.

Ruth

Well honestly I don't think I could answer that due to I do online classes and to me all students are hard working and parents of kids or students who just want to better themselves and pursue a career.

Jason

I go to school at Kaplan University. However, I must confess my classes are online. We hear many stereotypes about online schools. While some may wonder how in what we learn, I would argue the program is equally as challenging as a traditional school. In fact, I believe it is the future with many traditional schools in addition to major Universities going to online programs as well. For me personally I know I am getting my money’s worth. Kaplan has quality instructors as well as outstanding resources to enhance the learning. Grades are earned and not given however the quality resources gives you the ability to achieve the impossible.

Stephanie

I would guess the stereotype of the students at Kaplan is that we are non-traditional students. From my experiences, most students have jobs and families that take up a lot of their time and doing Kaplan online is the best way for them to advance their education.

Karen

Stereotyping occurs in schools all over the country from elementary to high school and yes, even college. I found that people that I would discuss my education with automatically stereotyped me as a geek or nerd, which pegged me as being smart or bound to make it somewhere in life other then where I was at. Because my college was 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} online education there was even a bigger threat to stereotyping as a nerd considering the hours you spend in-front of a computer. What isn't usually understood is that you don't have to be computer savvy or smart to educate yourself through online courses, you just have to have the motivation!

Marlena

I believe that their are many people who judge online students as being lazy, uneducated, and unintelligent. During my first term at Kaplan University I had the opportunity to speak with some of the hardest working, determined, and smartest individuals that I have ever met. I want to prove to everyone that just because I go to an online school does not mean that I do it because I am a slacker or lazy but because it's the only choice that I have. I work and take care of my sick parents.

Karla

The stereotype of Kaplan University online is that it is all adults that are starting late in their college education. This is not quite true. Some are changing careers or just furthering their degree plans.

Beverly

Geeks love to learn.

ValerieAdam

There is no stereotypr in my school. As an older person returning to school, I have never felt that I was older than my class as everyone is treated equally by the Instructors and your fellow classmates.

Paul

When I speak of my experience to friends of mine I find that Kaplan Online University tends to peak the interest of those that are self motivators, able to learn on their own, and knows how to meet deadlines. Originally, I found online schooling a little frustrating because I did not attend an actual classroom where I could speak to a professor to get my answers quickly. Instead, I would email professors and hope that I would get an answer back before the assignment was due. Now, I am much more confident in being able to work alone and solve my own problems as I have been very successful with my assignments and projects. Being motivated to get my work done on time has also helped me to be successful. Self motivation and family support allowed me to attend class and be on vacation at the same time.Kaplan University also has the schedule for the term planned out for you and as long as you meet those deadlines you will gain the most amount of points and be very successful. Attending an online university comes with some negatives, but for those that can do it, Kaplan University is a great place to attend.

Shawna

This question is difficult for me to answer. I am an online student so I do not attend a campus in order to accurately answer this question. I could make an assumption but I do not think that would be fair.

Dalen

Through Kaplan University's online program I would say there isn't any stereotypes. it is hard to stereotype people you cannot see or hear. This is what makes this school exciting because you don't have to worry about others grouping you into certain groups.

Shelby

To each their own and honestly stereotyping is jugding other people without truly knowing them so I believe that we are all here for the same thing.

Stephanie

I don't believe there is a stereotype of students and Kaplan University. The students are of all ages and backgrounds working on their degrees via the internet.

Shana

Kaplan University Online allows for a very diverse set of students. I have met many men and women of all ages through the online courses and I have learned much from them. There is not one set stereotype for these students except for this: they are all trying to better themselves and their families through furthering their education. Online schooling requires self-motivation and perseverence, and each Kaplan University Online student that I've met has had these.

Linsey

The stereotype of students at my school is that they are lazy and no it is not accurate

Carinn

Since it is an online college, I don't think that there are as many issues with stereotypes. I went to my undergrad at OSU and sterotypes seemed to be more of an issue. Jocks were thought of as not as smart. People that wanted to do well in school could be considered nerds. But at Kaplan, I don't get any of that. Everyone is there just for the educations and not for the social experience. Classmates and teachers cannot see you, so they don't form any kinds of expectations about you. I felt that this allowed me to feel more comfortable being myslef.

April

I would say that many people believe that Online students are just too lazy to attend a classroom. I have to say that this is untrue. Most online students have full time jobs, are parents and are striving to better themselves. This platform is the only way to fit in school in to their busy schedules.

Weylin

I would say geeks and business individuals are the common stereotypes of students in my school.

Stacia

There are mostly working adults and service men and women going to school at Kaplan University.

James

First, I want to start by saying I absolutely love Kaplan University. The people that attend are neccesarily in any stereotype. Most of the people that attend are those that are single parents, have working careers, do not like the classroom setting and choose the online method, or have tried other schools and failed. Kaplan Univeristy is the 3 college I have attended. I tried another university and di not like the group project so I left and came to Kaplan. I am a single parent and this is the only way for me to get my degree. However, there are also many students that simply do not like the classroom setting or other schools so they came to kaplan.

Cindy

The students at Kaplan were well rounded, educated people. They were there to help a fellow classmate when needed.

Aaron

I think one main stereotypes of online learning is that we somehow are getting subpar learning. This is just not the case. All of our professors are professionals in their fields. They are a wealth of information about things inside and outside (the real world) of our textbooks and learning materials. Anyone who needs an adult education model that believes in their students, I suggest you go for Kaplan University!

Angela

Kaplan University is an online school with students from all over the world. Students are from all different walks of life. There are students right out of high school, working parents looking to further their job opportunites, single mothers working towards a career while managing a family, and even members of our military attend Kaplan University Online. Being that our student body is so diverse we don't really see the stereotyping that is prevalent in campus based schools.

Melanie

One of the benefits of Kaplan University online is that there are no stereotypes. The online environment requires alot of self discipline and a desire to learn and succeed. Every student is here because they have made a personal choice to further their education. Without having the typical stereotypes as other on campus environments their is no risk of bullies or not feeling at ease to be ones-self.

Eric

Not being from the area I had to rely on word of mouth as to the reputation of Kaplan University. For the most part, everything I heard was impressive. However when I actually started to take some classes I realized a few things. Most people seem to view Kaplan as the "Plan B" so to speak. Drop out of high school? Can't seem to get your life together? Come to Kaplan! Sounds promising doesn't it? Now I'm not saying I dropped out of high school or my life was heading down a one way street to destruction, but even so they dropped the ball.

Nadia

I cannot know, because do not see them, and talk to them, off line.

Sonia

I do not see Kaplan as having a stereotype of student. I have ran in to a lot of different people while attending Kaplan and the University has different kinds of students from different states and different reason's on why they are currently enrolled with Kaplan University.

marlon

I do not believe there any type of sterotypes at kaplan. If i had to choose i would say geeks! From my point of view Smart young individuals that are serious about their education and are willing to do anything to make sure their goal is complete. Whether it be to out smart another individual or to try and be a teachers pet assuming they will get a good grade for doing so.

Linsey

well, honestly because Kaplan University is an online school there.s not a stereotype of students. We KU students come from all walks of like in very different colors, sizes, ages, and places. The only real stereotype that is related to the school is the one where most new students think that because you work at your own pace the coures and assignments are easy. This stereotype is not accurate in the least students must work hard to excel at Kaplan University.

The students at my school are those who are eager to learn, succeed, and accomplish goals. Many of the students attending Kaplan University are education seeking individuals. Most of us are stay-at-home parents who needed a convenient way to continue our education, and found it at Kaplan.

Gina

Since I'm doing online schooling I'd have to say the stereotype is older people going back to school and have full time jobs and kids. While this is an accurate stereotype I have had students in my class that are young and single.
