Kent State University at Kent Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Camarae

That it would be so much work to maintain.

Jessica

Looking back now, I realize I should have known everything I know now; about financial aid, scholarships, and loans. I wish I would have taken it all more seriously. I failed to know deadlines and that has caused some stress, to say the least. I convinced myself that I had enough time to accomplish everything that I needed to do, but I was wrong. Now I am struggling to pay for college. If i could go back with the knowledge I have now, things would certainly be easier for me.

Aaron

There is nothing that I wish I would have known at this point.

Matthew

I wish I had known that Greek life was not all about partying and high school jocks all grown up. I have found that it is so much more, it's building lifelong friendships, and doing service projects to benefit the community. It's also partying, but it's so much more and I wish someone would have told me that before my junior year when I finally joined a Fraternity.

Victoria

I would have to say I wish I would have known the layout of the Kent main Campus. Very large compared to the Trumbull campus I was previously attending much more often. The first time I went to Kent main I was only taking one class there while I was maintaing my full-time status at Kent Trumbull. The campus was huge and I was pretty unfimiliar, I actually used a parking meter there for a full semester. I was much too nervous to be late or get lost then. I would definitely refer new students to take a tour.

Megan

I wish I had known how much more difficult the curriculum is in comparison to other schools. However, I really believe it is worth it, and I have learned so much more at Kent State University than I feel I would have at another school.

Christine

I wish I knew that the beginning GPA is the most important. If I could go back in time, I would work harder my first semester.

Maurice

I wish I had known more about college in general because I never planned on going to college and im lucky to have ended up at Kent State University.

Alisha

I wish I knew that there was a career service department. I was undecided on my major for a couple quarters last year. Once I realized it was there on campus I worked with them to decide my major. It made the rest of the year less stressful once I knew what I wanted to do and what degree I wanted to pursue.

I wish I understood exactly how expensive classes were before coming to this school.

Michaela

There is no information that was not hidden from me, or surprising. Every student is very informed .

Chloe

I wish I would have known what I wanted to major in coming into college. I started in a major having no idea what it was and I ended up hating it and switching. It was a hassle and very stressful. I feel like my college career would have been completely different if I would have started undecided. It is very useful having that option as an incoming student.

Rollin

The only thing that I wish I know about Kent State University before I enrolled is that the availability of some courses were very slim into getting because of the size. I have had to wait a few times for a class before I finally got in and it actually set me back a bit.

Daniel

I have always been told to apply early for scholarships, admissions, the FAFSA, or any particular deadline. Before attending Kent, I really wish I listened to that advice more abidingly. I failed to note how paramount this can be, and it resulted with much unnecessary stress. Always prioritize your submissions, as many systems that involve applications tend to favor first come, first serve. While this is not always the case, letting procrastination lead you will only be a guide to regret. Putting things off will only end with rushed, misguided effort and decisions.

Shawn

Before coming to Kent State University I had already known a good amount about it because of reasearch on the internet and a campus tour that I took. But in terms of the campus itself and the surrounding area I wish I had known that the surrounding town is not very large, this is not to say it is quiet and small because it is not, the town is largely geared toward the students and the community members welcome students with open arms, creating a sense of unity between the campus and the city of Kent.

Natalie

I wish I had known the direct way to become a French Major with a focus on education, rather than stumbling about what classes to take for the first year. While I got a lot of my Kent Core classes done my freshman yea, I could have gotten a head start on my major, and now I feel left behind.

Kara

That the advisors and fincial counselors here are terrible they seem very uncaring and the size of the dorm rooms are smaller than expected and the fact that sometimes you cant fit all your classes into your schedule. Also the lack of fincial aid given to in state students.

Holly

Nothing really. Kent was pretty good about telling me about what I was getting myself into.

Torri

I wish I'd known more about the difficulty of the major, Architecture, that I'd enrolled in. Hearing from a current or former student would have been helpful in understand what I'd decided to study.

Shane

I wish I would have known how unprepared for life I really was. In high school I just skated by with a 2.5 GPA not really caring much about my academics or putting too much effort into my education or saving for college. My first few semesters in school I still had that high school mentality and I didn't do very well because of my poor school work habits. It took a lot of hard work but now that I'm finally getting back on track money is getting really tight for me and my family.

Nichole

Honestly, I feel I had a fairly accurate mindset of what life as a Kent State college student would be. This school has lived up to my expectations for the most part. The only thing I wish I would have known is the extreme variety of majors and minors Kent offered. I had no idea and struggled to settle on a major for quite sometime. Had I actually known all the choices I had in advance, maybe it wouldn't have been so hard to choose one.

Erica

I don't wish to have known anything other than what I already knew when enrolling at Kent State University. It is a great campus and I love it.

Megan

In high school I had always heard to be involved in college, and I took that kind of advice for granted during my first year which is something I regret since I was pretty lonely and bored during that first year of my college career. Now as a sophomore, I am more involved and I appreciate my school more and I actually have friends and I have a really great time at school and I never want to leave my new friends.

Alyssa

Before I started attending Kent State, I wish I had known what it would be like to be completely independent and being completely responsible for myself. My success at school depends on me and only me. Unlike in high school, you don't have teachers or peers looking over your shoulder every minute making sure you get to class and do your work on time. Before I started college, I had no idea what it would be like to have so much responsibility and having my academic success in school be based only on me.

steven

More about financial aid and interactions at the university between faculty, administration, partiicularly financial aid, and students.

Olivia

I wish I would have known that the black squirrels are literally everywhere and they aren't afraid of you!

Edo

I wish I had known the vast amount of oppurtunities that are available at Kent State University. There are hundreds of internships, jobs, and other ways to be prepared for the work force much better than other universities would like to say they have available. If I had known this earlier I would have taken full advantage of these opportunities and have had a much better head start for my career in the medical field!

Kristina

Don't be afraid to speak up. Stop worrying about being perceived as weird. Get involved with as many things as possible. Stop thinking that you can't or you won't. The only thing holding you back is yourself. Campus food is heavenly. No one judging you. You don't need to talk to your boyfriend constantly. Your friends are more important. This is the last time you'll be able to sleep until 9:00 everyday, so: Laugh. Eat. Trust. Divulge. Flirt. Cry. Pretend. Try harder. Sweat. Focus. Relax. Believe in yourself. Be; You will go far.

kashif

I think Kent State university is one of the best place for undergraduate study. You feel like home where you are safe and sound.

Julianne

I wish I had known when the scholarship deadlines were.

Nazdar

I wish I had known how small Kent, Ohio is and the fact that Kent State University makes up most of the town. I believe, if not for Kent University the town would be nothing. I wish I had also known about the cost of living near the University, which is far more than I expected considering the town and school I attended prior had much more lower rates. I wish I had also known that finding a job in Kent is very difficult because the amount of students living in Kent is far more than the jobs available.

Jennifer

How to get around campus a little better took me a little while to figure it out.

Jodi

That life is uncertain and ever-changing and that you have to learn how to roll with the punches. That life is what you make it. It's all in your attitude and outlook and you should take every advantage of opportunities to explore and expand your thinking and knowledge base. Professors are a wealth of knowledge. Take advantage of their experiences and learn from them. In this day and age, in order to get a leg up on someone else, it's all about networking, so take advantage of doing so as well. Have fun while learning!

Adrianna

I wish I would have known more about other options for housing.

Lindsay

I wish I would have known that most of my programs first year was going to be people right out of high school. I am a transfer from a community college where there are all ages so coming to Kent, I expected to click with more girls my own age.

Brian

Nothing sticks out to me as something I wish I had known before attending Kent. I've always known that college was the place for me. Of course, I would like some information to prepare me for certain things, rather than walking in blind. But life is all about discovering the unknown. I believe that there was nothing I was supposed to know initially, and I think my grades reflect that.

Jasmine

How finacially secure I should be for all of this

Angela

Before coming to this University I wish that I had known how to study better. I got by well without studying in high school and was very unprepared for the workload that college brought. I was unsure on the most effective ways to study and had to take the time to figure out the strategy that was best for me, which would have been more effective if I had known beforehand.

Jacqueline

I wish that I would have known that college is a lot like baking. You need the perfect amount of each ingredient to make it work. When you begin college, you think it is just about learning and having fun. Then you realize that you need to study (a lot!). Then throw in extracurriculars, work, and friends. When you figure out how to fit all of these ingredients together in a way that works, then you can bake up the perfect college experience.

Aimee

How many parties there existed/

Thayer

I wish I had known about how the classes were set up, especially for each individual major. For example I wish I had known that when I came to Kent I wouldn't really be given a choice about my classes. I just went in and was assigned to what classes fit my major (and ended up getting put over the limit for credit hours allowed for freshman) without really being given a choice of electives or anything. It was strictly business from the beginning.

Kelsey

Kent is very good about getting information to incoming students, and the staff is always willing to answer questions. There was a great deal of information they provided incoming freshman; however, I wish I knew a bit more about getting involed in psychology research.

Shanique

That there is nothing around the school.

Ashlee

I wish I would have known some better studying skills and ways to manage my time. With that additional knowledge, my freshman year may not have been so hard and I could have recieved better grades (which would obviously have raised my current GPA).

Emily

Nothing.

Sarah

I wish I had known about more scholarship oppurtunities to help me pay for school. I also wished I had known that joining a campus organization is worth it and that you make great connections, in friendships and resume building.

Kara

I wish I would have known how easy it was to make friends! That way, I would have worried so much less the summer before my freshman year!

Kaylee

I wish I had known that I wanted to major in Biology/Pre-Med. If I had known this in high school I would have taken more science and math classes to better my education for college.
