Kent State University at Kent Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Kelsey

Some things at Kent are hidden and you learn them the fall semester of your freshman year. For example, there's over 500 different clubs. I wouldn't have dropped a few hobbies if I knew Kent had clubs and scholarships for them. In all honesty, I can now keep doing what I love, but before didn't know it was an option.

I wish i would have known how difficult college would have been, and i wish highschool would have prepared me a lot more.

Kayla

Looking back on my senior year, I wish I would have realized the amount of scholarships that were avaliable to me. My class load was tough, so having time for extra scholarship essays was last on my list. Most the scholarships from Kent State had due dates before March, but being the first child in my family to go through this college process, I missed my oppurtunity. Now, I am a constant deadline reminder to my rommate and friends at Kent State.

Hannah

Before I came to Kent State University I attended a small all-girl high school with a graduating class of just 112. I had never been to a large school and didn't quite know what I was getting myself into. At times, I wish I knew how different a large school is. I wish I knew ahead of time that there will be people I will never get to know or become friends with. Not everyone is going to like you or understand your personality and I wish I had known that before hand.

Justin

I wish I would have known where all the two hour parking meters are located on campus. Anytime I was running late for class I tried to take advantage of the parking meters but was unsure where all they were located. I also wish I would have known about all of the different types of scholarships available. I didn't realize how many great opportunities there were out there to get the help you need to pay for school. Don't wait last minute for anything.

Amber

Before i started Kent State Univerity, I wish I would have know how much was going on all the time. There was never a night in campus with nothing to do. In all honesty too much was going on at once that it made getting anything done difficult. My first year of college I tried to take care of my class work during the day and have fun alll night. However my grades suffered for it. The lack of sleep and focus had a damaging effect on my academics in the end.

Ashley

I wish I had know that college is more complex than high school. It takes dedication and commitment to succeed. I also wish I would have known how expensive books and art supplies are on top of tuition.

Ashley

I wish I had known that it was so rainy, that way I could have invested in an umbrella beforehand.

There is really nothing I wish I would have known. I knew I would have to work hard in my major, find a part time job, and also get involved to make friends. All this has happened easily on this campus, making it exactly what I expected and easy to adjust to. I was also granted scholarships and financial aid from the unversity, making it easier to afford.

I wish I would have been more prepared for bigger lecture classes especially coming from a smaller high school. Also I wish I would have known about all the different groups and/or fraternities/sororities prior to attending Kent State to be prepared to get involved because once you become overwhelmed with school you lose those goals.

I wish I had known not to doubt myself and my morals. When I entered college I had ideas of what I would be interested in, but was never certain. I wasted time trying to figure out I might like for a career, and realized almost too late that a career in history and politics, though not "practical," would be the only thing that would make me happy. In addition to my career resolution, I wish I had learned to stand up for myself sooner and be more confident in my abilities and what I believed in.

Megan

To be totally honest, I am happy with the way things worked out for my my first year of college. Granted, I made quite a few mistakes my first year such as getting lost, saying the wrong thing to a professor or hanging out with the wrong types of people. Yet because of all my mistakes, I learned strong lessons on how to be a better, more intelligent person. If I had to tell myself something, I would just tell me to relax, enjoy the year and be the person I want to be someday.

Elizabeth

Apply for any and all scholarships. Every little bit helps. In college you realize that there are many things you have to pay for on a daily basis. Budgeting and saving money is the key for financial stability.

Katherine

krista

I wish I had known just how important it was to get study habits set for college. In high school my habits were not as great as they could have been and becuase of this I believe that if I had focused more on my studies instead of the friends and relationships I had I might have done better and would be even more prepared for college.

ZaNon

The first thing I would tell myself is that I wish that I knew in high school what I know now, and with knowing that then I would be a level higher than where I am now. Before I came to this school, I did not know much of mathematics and other studies that incoming freshmans already know. But working with classmates who know and who are up on the new technology and the new math formulas, they teach me and I learn from them things that I should have known before I came to the university.

Kacey

I wish I would've understood how tightly knit everything was there. I didn't realize how easy it was to feel like you're a part of the whole experience, and that one of Kent's goals is to make you feel like a part of the Kent family for a lifetime. With this, I would not have been so worried about how big the campus was and I would've realized earlier that there was nothing to worry about when it came to fitting into that lifestyle of independence and self suffiency.

Walter

I wish i would have known how important it was to fill out scholarships. They really are very helpful to your education.

That there are very racist people in Kent but if you mind your business you will be ok.

Maria

Before I came to Kent State Univerisity, I wish I would have known to get more envolved with my surroundings. By doing this, I would have been more active in my community and gotten to know a lot of new people that would have helped me on my way to success. By getting envolved you find yourself to stay on track with your goals and you find yourself having fun and being yourself. Being active gives people more independence and gives them a real college experience.

kaitlin

the on campus bus system is terrible

I wish that I had been involved in more extra-curricular activities, or organziations. I was involved in some things such as student government, intra-mural athletics, but wish that I would have been involved in more volunteer, community based efforts.

Rachel

I really don't think that there is anything I would have liked to know before coming here. I started college knowing very minimal information about it but I wouldn't change it for the world. I believe that's how you should go into a situation so you don't have preconcieved notions or judgements.

David

Before coming to this school I wish I had known how to be a better student. Kent State University is a great school in all aspects especially academics. In high school I wasn’t the best student as far as grades go and after coming here I realized that putting a poor effort into my work and studies does work here. Kent State has a great college of business and they take their GPA score very seriously. Because of my poor choices as a student first semester, I got off to a bad start and regret it every day.

Daniel

I wish I knew more about their advising system and the detailed requirements for the major I initially started out for. I was a secondary history education major, but their department was extremely unorganized. I never met with an advisor until my 3rd year as this major. I am now just a history major and had to change my plans for after graduation.

Jessica

I wish I would have known how important my high school education would be when it came time for college. While I did fairly well as an A and B student, if I had tried harder I would not have to work to pay for all my education. By working, I am spliting time between a job and studying. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself as a sophomore in high school to study hard, because when time came, I would rather be studying than struggling to balance study and work just to stay in school.

I wish I had known more about financing my college education. The way that financial aid is dispersed is clumsy, and it causes some tight times for me as far as money is concerned; I have a few weeks at the beginning of each semester where I really struggle not to go in the red with my personal finances.

Kayla

I wish I would've known about the costs and the burden that it was going to put on my family. I was so naive about the cost of college. I wish I would've been more educated on the breakdown of costs and financial aid. If I would've known the extent of the costs, I would've applied for more scholarships, hence why I'm applying now.

Lisa

I wish that I would have known that this university has one of the best Education programs in Ohio. I also wish that I would have taken advantage of more of the organizations on campus right away. It would have been nice to be more educated on the importance of events that have occured concerning the history of the university. That college is not like High School. College is full of choices and no one is going to tell you whether the choice you made is a good choice or a bad choice. In High School your teachers would make that choice for you "you didn't turn in the assignment so you have to complete it with me during lunch". In college if you choose not to complete an assignment the professor doesn't hunt you down and hold your had through turning making sure it gets done.

Kelley

I wish i had known what exact major I wanted to pursue.

Randi

I wish I had known that kent is a very small town and that Kent gets very cold. I also wish that I had known to choose a better residence hall, because mine is a long walk to classes. More than anything, I wish I had known how hard it is to complete some courses that I want to do, since some essential courses are not offered every semester. My time here has stretched by a year because I wan't able to complete all the courses that I require in time.

I wish I would have known the importance of a formal education in society today. Had I put more effort into expanding my mind in the previous years, I would have so many more opportunities, both for myself and my children. Kent provides more information and resources than I knew were avilable for me.
