Very poor school for student support, safety , housing and diversity. Shootings, muggings, homophobic attacks, racial intimidation, theft in student housing that Kirkwood takes NO responsibility for, additionally they are not actual properties owned by Kirkwood and the people who do own those apartments prey on students. 3 units in my bldg dropped classes within like a month, yes 3 in just my building if thats any indicator on students feelings towards kirkwood but If you live there only one month you better plan to pay for the entire 12 month year, they will sue you top to bottom if you miss one DIME! This is also secretly the WORST neighborhood in Cedar Rapids and the drug rehab place and the transitional housing across the street from campus dosent help. Read the review before you move into any apartments near kirkwood. This is a sad state of higher ed, I felt like I was in a good place but then I was passed around from program to program to program and then back in the same circle, TON of support programs but no real viable support ( these people dont know anything) and put their students through an endless cycle of meetings and shenanagans and then they make you act like you never took advantage of services because they dont do anything its a complete joke offering no viable or relatable resolutions, very out of touch with the student expereince. I walked out of one meeting after 3 minutes , just walked out because it was a complete waste of time the person helping me could barely speak and, they actually said the exact same thing as the program before Im confused LOL Its a full circle of nothing but wasting students time . The staff have NO idea what they are doing or talking about if they are even welcoming enough to help you. I am going back to the cc in my town its smaller and easier to navigate on my own. For one class the software we were using was giving out wrong answers on occassion and our instructor said just ignore it and move on why are we using something to learn that gives the wrong answer, thats called not learning lol . The people in the bookstore look like they are in misery and hate their jobs ( they should quit) . On the plus side Kirkwood is a beautiful campus, rec center is awesome, library is great ( aside from the rude staff) and they have plays each semester in a nice performance space. They offer a lot of different program options and the classes are challenging

Kirkwood Community College has several locations that span across Iowa to serve thousands of students, with the main campus in Cedar Rapids. Overall, of my experience at the main campus, I think that the professors are very knowledgeable in their areas of study, and they keep regular office hours to serve their students. Communication between students and professors is strong as you can reach them by email or phone, with a short turnaround time for a response. My advisor has also been a great resource for helping me stay on track for when I transfer to another university, making sure I take the right courses for my major. Kirkwood Community College also offers great options for students, as you can either enroll in a two year program leading to a career or to take classes that will transfer to onto another college or university.

Jacob - 07/15/2020

Kirkwood has made it extremely easy and efficient for a new college student to have all the resources and information I would need to know, right at my finger tips. Along the way the counselors and staff have been extremely helpful with answering all my questions that have came up and taken the time to walk me through everything I need to know.

Danielle

It is a great school not only for vocational programs but for people who plan to transfer to a university. The classrooms are small which allows the students and professors to learn about one another. There are many opportunities outside of class to be involved in the community, but also to get tutoring if necessary.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

  3. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

There aren't as many classes to choose from at a smaller school. Plus Kirkwood doesn't have dormitories and you really miss out on that part of campus life there. They have apartments, but the rent is higher than getting a place on your own that isn't in their complexes.

  4. Describe the students at your school.

I only get to chat with my classmates online, but they are all very easy to talk to and helpful if need be. We all lend a hand if anyone needs some pointers on an assignment or test.

  5. What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

One important factor that I wished I would have know before coming to Kirkwood, is all the financial opportunities they offered. There are so many opportunities to help lower your tuition cost that I did not take advantage of.

  6. Describe your favorite campus traditions.

Kirkwood Community College is best known for it's strive for excellence, it's encouragement to keep their students reaching their academic goals and for their low tuition and fees. I believe Kirkwood is a great place for high school students to go to for their first 2 years of secondary education based on the low $111 per credit, having small classrooms where students are not intimidated to approach their teachers, and a great enviroment with alot of events that make it easy to meet others and gain new friends.

  7. What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

I like to talk about how Kirkwood's class sizes are so small. The average class is around eighteen students, which allows for more one-on-one time with the professors. I think that this is more valuable for students compared to a university setting where there can be three hundred students in a class. With so many students, there is little to no interaction between the professor and student.

  9. Here's your chance: Say anything about your college!

Kirkwood is Iowa's largest community college with learning centers spread out over eastern Iowa which makes it easy for students to attend classes without having to drive to the main campus in Cedar Rapids. Kirkwood is also the cheapest community college in the area and also the most renowned. Kirkwood also has programs set up with the three main universities in Iowa that students can be a part of which will help their transition to one of those schools easier.

  10. What is your overall opinion of this school?

It's a good place to get an AA or gen eds taken care of for a reasonable price. The classes and teachers have been good for the most part, but I have had a couple teachers that weren't the best. One thing this school is lacking is an organized and helpful administration. When I ask them a question, I get a different answer from everyone. I also have asked them for information about scholarships and no one seems to be able to point me in the right direction.

  12. What's unique about your campus?

The small class sizes have really been a good step for me to go from a small high school into a college program. I had considered starting at a 4 year state university, but I am glad that I started at a 2 year college now. It is also less expensive and that really helps.

  13. What are the academics like at your school?

You get out what you put in. If you take time to talk to the professors, ask questions, and participate, they will be more willing to work with you. Its a small school so for the most part all of my teachers remember who I am. I seldom miss class, I pay attention, I study, and I have a 4.0. Going to class alone will earn you at least a B. I go to the smaller campus, so some classes aren't offered there, but there is still a wide variety of classes.

  14. What kind of person should not attend this school?

Don't attend this school if you think that the classes here are easy just because it is a community college. The professors expect you to do well and turn in your assignments on time.

  15. What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

The way financial aid is processed and distributed. It takes a long time to go through the system, which is understandable but I have heard of way too many mix ups in how the processed money was distributed and people getting smaller amounts than they originally qualified for.
