So far, I've attended Lamar for a total of eleven weeks. Overall, Lamar University is a great school. The courses are manageable. If you find yourself struggling in a class, then you can visit your professor during his/her office hours, and if for some reason you can't they are willing to be flexible. One of my favorite things is Lamar offers free tutoring services if you find yourself struggling in a class. Food on campus is actually pretty good, and it's an upgrade from high school lunch. The cafeteria offers food that can accommodate just about any type of diet. However, the building that held our favorite dining places is currently being renovated to add a Panda Express and Chick-fil-A, but the University was able to find another way to accommodate our favorite food into food trucks. The last thing is campus life. The dorms are pretty spacious compared to the dorms I've seen at other colleges. You'll have a roommate who you'll share a common space and a bathroom with. The room is already furnished with couches, a table, a microwave, and a fridge. Your room has a pretty big closet, two dresses, a twin bed, a bedside table, and a desk. There are many activities to be involved with on campus. There is almost something to do every day, and there's usually free food involved as well. Lamar can accommodate just about any type of student, which is why their population is very diverse.

Teachers have been great, helpful, and fair! The most difficult aspect I've experienced with this school is their process and systems when trying to speak to someone, you're almost always directed to someone else who might also direct you to someone else. I spent over 13 days trying to get a situation fixed, most staff wasn't helpful and even rude. I did my undergrad and some other post Bach programs and don't remember having to deal with anything like this before to this point so it seems like Lamar has taken more of turn for the worse. I do remember their process being pretty lengthy. You have to go all over the campus to take care of one matter.

The food is great, the rooms in the dorms are good- but maintenance needs to be done and they're rather old. Lamar is located in a bad neighborhood and a bad area of town but there's campus police. There's a ton of activities that go around on campus! We have sports events all the time. It's a great school, I just wish there weren't as many ghetto-don't-actually-care-about-school people.

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Lamar is generally very safe, though there are certain areas you should avoid, especially at night. Our food is decent but it's frustrating when the good food is really only served when tours come to campus. The classes are not too large or too small. You do have some auditorium classes in the beginning, but they shrink as you go on. The professors are pretty cool and are generally there when you need to talk with them. Even if they are not in their office, they will usually email you back quickly. Dorm life is pretty good! You and one other person share a dorm room but have separate bedrooms! Just make sure you go do laundry during off hours or else you'll be waiting for a while. I'd recommend going if you're very into the STEM fields. While we have other programs, Lamar focuses more on these majors.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

That the truth behind how different it was going to be from high school to college in regard to studying was completely true. In high school studying wasn't that hard or sometimes not necessary but in college it's completely necessary and at times overwhelming.

The friendly atmosphere and professors' open door policy makes this school a great learning environment.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If, by some miracle, I could go back in time and give myself advice about college, I would tell myself to relax. I got really stressed out during the process of applying for college and forgot to breathe and allow the memories to sink in.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The worst thing about this school is the food.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Don't lose your passions in life because people want you to conform to their ideas of what life should be like. Don't let them tell you that your dreams are too big, that you aren't good enough, or that you can't succeed. Enjoy the little things in life and work hard to succeed at YOUR passion, not someone elses. Stop people pleasing and go for it! Life happens quickly, don't miss it by trying to be a "cool kid". The things that upset you now won't matter 5 years from now. You will still miss your best friend that just passed away, and it's okay to hurt. Don't hide from pain, instead grow within it. Wave your flag and be proud of who you are, but know you aren't perfect and can grow to become better. Smile more, cry less. You are beautiful, unique, and worthy of true joy.

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

That the school was so conservative. It's not as bad as it could be, but I wish it was more progressive in its ways. There aren't any plans in place for recycling or activism, which was surprising for a university campus.

What's the most frustrating thing about your school?

I am a pretty liberal person, and our school is not involved politically enough. Students aren't active in learning about what's going on in the world. The small town mentality is strong here which is really disheartening.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would tell my high school self to salways stay focused and get involved in campus organizations. Getting invovled on campus helps you make friends with the same common goal and intrest as yourself. It also keeps you busy and will make transitioning from home to college life a little bit more easy.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I would say the thing i dislike about Lamar University is that if you dont have any form of transportation, then it will be hard for you to get around the city. There are no store and food places in walking distance of the campus. The city bus runs on a weird schedule so you cant really rely on them. So I would recommend that if you dont have a car of your own then make sure you get everything you need when family visits or if you have friends that has a car then they may help.

What do you brag about most when you tell your friends about your school?

Something that I brag about is that I came to Lamar dreading taking any type of math class. But as the semester went along there was so many tutors avaialable to help in any area of study you may need help in. Their tutoring services are free and they are very friendly and patient with the students.

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

The best advice I could give any potential college student would be to get involved in campus activities and go to class. The course work may seem difficult at first, but once you set yourself on a schedule, it becomes much easier. Freedom is great, but remember that studies should come first.

What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

The location of the campus in relation to restraunts and other entertainment venues.
