Lawrence University is a liberal arts school located in a small town in Wisconsin. It is located on a street with many shops and other things to do. Small class sizes and extremely involved professors make the academic environment rich for each student. The campus is beautiful with many beautiful buildings and ample trees. However, housing leaves a lot to be desired. Only one dorm has air-conditioning and many of them do not have elevators. When it gets hot, people sleep in the campus center or the library to prevent heat-related illnesses. The food is also not the best, but not the worst ever offered. There is only a café and the commons, no outside restaurants or variety. Student life is vibrant and there is always something to do. SOUP provides many fun events, including my personal favorite, bingo! Greek life took a hit sorority-wise, but they are trying their best to bolster their chapters back up to regular numbers. Overall, I enjoy my experience at Lawrence and I am glad that I chose to be a Viking.

Lawrence University is an amazing place for someone who is looking for smaller class sizes, a small town feel, loves to be active, and wants to get involved with campus activities. The campus itself is beautiful, it is along the fox river and it has a safe feeling even while out and about.

It is a good small private school to attend to and its cultural essence is just great to be around and learn about. I play football here and the school spirit is great they all come and support the football team when there are home games and the culture around is great with students who are new and learning the tradition it has.

There are a few really great professors here and plenty of great students, but this university will screw you over financially if you aren't a trust fund baby. They give huge scholarships for first years and then diminish it the next year. My out-of-pocket tuition cost tripled from freshman to sophomore year despite the fact that I'm a Pell Grant recipient. The staff here is like 85{6f65e1278338a62264eed73e2adc5af8e2841420db12ceb4f80b8db22f3260ec} white, Appleton is a depressing little city where all there is to do is drink, and it's impossible to get around anywhere without a car (which you have to pay $600/year to park)!

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I would tell myself to focus on what I want and not get pressured by those around me. Sometimes the best school for you isn't the highest ranked, or the one that gives the most financial aid. You have to find out as much as you can about schools before you can make a decision, but you'll never know what it will be like until you try it!

  6. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I think the worst thing about Lawrence University is the lack of communication between the administration and the faculty. Lawrence recently had a new president take office and, while she is doing a great job as a fundraiser, communication between the faculty and the administration is weaker than it should be. This gap affects the variety and the strength of incoming freshmen and therefore the dynamic of the student population both in and out of the classroom.

  13. What are the most popular student activities/groups?

There is always something to do on campus. Although we obviously don't have football games where the streets get blocked off and thousands of people are chanting, we do have tons of athletic events. I think it's cool to go to these events knowing the athletes and being able to support your friends and vice versa. The opportunity to continue athletics has been great and I've made some really good friends through soccer and track. Weekends are whatever you want them to be and what you do depends on your interests and friends. You can go to athletic events, concerts, guest speakers, play Halo, read, sleep, watch TV, play games, whatever!

  16. What is your overall opinion of this school?

I love the type of education I'm receiving at Lawrence. Lawrence doesn't teach you how to memorize, Lawrence teaches you how to think and develop ideas, research and support those ideas, and then discuss, argue, and present those ideas. Lawrence truly produces well-rounded people and has tons of opportunities for leadership. I find the size of the school to be just right as I can walk around campus and know a good deal of the people I meet, yet I still make new friends all the time. The smaller class sizes allow an unbelievable amount of interaction with professors and also lead to amazing opportunites that are simply not available at other schools. I just got back from a weekend at Bjorklunden (the school's beautiful property in Door County) talking to alumni doctors and learning about the medical field that I attend to get into. In class, you can always ask questions, are able to give oral presentations, and professors are available to you outside of class.

  17. What are the academics like at your school?

The level of interaction with professors is simply unbelievable. I know I keep repeating this fact, but I love getting to know my professors and the fact that they are always there for you. I also think it's awesome that I have an adviser who knows me not only on an academic level, but also on a personal level. I always know that, no matter what, I have someone in my corner willing to lend me a hand.

  18. Is the stereotype of students at your school accurate?

I'll admit that some of the things I see going on around campus are strange to me, but it's a quirky/fun sort of thing. Everybody finds their own group of friends and niche, I'm sure some people look at some things I do and scratch their head.
