Lewis & Clark College Top Questions

What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Tate

When I announced that I was going to LC, my friend's mother said, "That's a hippie school. You won't fit in there." She thought that everyone there had dread locks and never showered. Of course, I'm from Indiana, and my friend's mom is conservative and not outdoorsy at all. She was right about the stereotype, though!

Sara

Some stereotypes are that there are basically two kinds of people: jocks and hippies; that a lot of people don't take showers; the dating scene is non-existent, just random hook-ups.

Quinn

Stoners, hippies

Parker

That we are all pot smoking hippees.

Whitney

Everyone thinks that we are all hippies... but that is not true. People do care for the environment, eating healthy, and being outdoors.

Maverick

When most people hear that i go to Lewis&Clark College one of two things happen. They either look at me with a most puzzling look because they've never heard of it, or they reply with some sort of hippie comment while laughing.

Rogan

That we all have dreadlocks, and wear Birkenstocks, and smoke heavy weed and cigerettes! But that we are also extremely smart and diverse, and have a strong emphasis on the environment and political affairs. Current events are present everywhere, when you look for them, as are just about all extracurricular interest related crowds. Its intellectual conversation everywhere!

Hippie town, USA

Harper

A student body that is overly PC, smelly, hippie.

Torry

The big stereotype my friends & I hear is that LC is the standard hippy/pot-head liberal arts college, off in its own little bubble, occupied by a small population of well-to-do students, whose parents have way too much money. There is also a stereotype that LC academics is not very rigorous. And of course, everyone is ultra-liberal/ultra left-wing.

Amy

White elitist liberal hypocrites who talk a lot about activism, but mostly sit around their dorm rooms smoking pot. Constantly complaining about the administration. Desperately trying to prove that they are more liberal than someone else. Despises Christianity, but other religions are ok. Cares about environment, human rights, politics, and international issues.

TIm

Lewis and CLark is dedicated to helping students. They view academics as the highest priority.

Brittany

Hippies who smoke pot a lot, enjoy Barack Obama and gay rights protests.

Brett

Smelly high hippies. Lots of people don't shower. Everyone is either high or drunk.

Melissa

everyone smokes pot, we're all hippies

Chris

Hippies and a college full of potheads

Some of the stereotypes of Lewis and Clark are that the students are liberal hippies who are intelligent, but who don't shower.

Annie

That everyone here is a hippie and smokes a lot of pot.

Casey

Hippy-Rich-Stoners-academic-Liberal artsy-internationally diverse-chill

Jess

That everyone is a hippie who doesn't shower and smokes pot all the time.

Kelly

The biggest stereotypes about Lewis and Clark students are associated with the belief that the entirety of the student body is "hippies". From there, it is assumed that most people smoke marijuana, that students are slackers, and that they are full of dead-ended idealistic, liberal ideas.

Jacque

Supposedly we are all hippies. With iPods.

Daniel

Everyone is a pothead. We're just a bunch of hippies. We are just a bunch of atheists.

Aleta

They are all smart, and either pot-head hippies, bay area hipsters, or total west coast granola living in a tiny isolated bubble.

Antonio

They're rich, preppy, lots of wannabe hippies. A lot of people consider it the preppier, less-intellectual version of Reed College, as if all LC kids wished they could go to read.

Maggie

That they are rich, white, snobby, and liberal? Also that they are smelly hippies I guess.

Dylan

That we are all stoners, and all rich, or the common "trust-ifarians"

Lindsay

That all students are hippies and do drugs all the time. Student athletes get superior treatment. You get a stellar job right out of college.

Madeline

1. All men are skinny, have brown curly hair and mild acne. 2. Everyone smokes weed all the time.

Kelsey

We are all dirty hippies!

Casey

That all LC students are hippies.

Ava

That everyone smokes weed. I would say 70{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} smoke occasionally, but its not weird to abstain. Another stereotype is that we are smart rich white hippies.

Madison

That we are rich, Yippies and Trustifarians (Rich kids pretending to care about environmental and existential issues because it is vogue)who pay no attention to religion and smoke a lot of pot.

Royce

we stomp around in sweaty crocs, half blind from drogas, never ready to act. and we are always smoking something.

Craig

extremely liberal, hippies, anything along those lines...

Alex

One stereotype is that we are all a bunch of hippies and smoke lots of pot. I would say this is not true at all. In my four years at LC I have hardly been exposed to pot and had lots more friends in high school who smoked all the time then my friends here.

Harper

we are allegedly into drugs

Denali

That every student is a stoner hippy who only cares about the environment. Another stereotype is that the students are separated from the community. Also that the student body as a whole is not social and school events are not attended very often and school spirit is lacking.

Sasha

We are all tree hugging hippies, and everyone just chills and smokes weed and loves everything around them. Also people don't wear shoes a lot.

Harper

Many people consider Lewis and Clark to be an extremely liberal (hippie) college.

Torry

Er. It's not exactly a ridiculously well known school, so I don't think there are any national stereotypes... Seeing as how the school is located in Portland, the assumption is probably along the lines of what the Princeton review says- birkenstock wearing, clove smoking (along with other substances), hippies who denounce god on a regular basis and see showers as a waste of personal and earthly resources.

Rory

1. students at Lewis & Clark are all pot-smoking hippies 2. students are all politically liberal 3. students are not religious

Jessica

Some people like to classify LC as being full of hippies and while there are people that I guess you could see as being 'hippies' there is a lot more to the population of students. In fact, even those you could call 'hippies' go around smoking cigarettes, littering, and not doing much good for the environment- but that's just some of them. But we have people that strive to improve the environment, we have students who want to become doctors, teachers, politicians, musicians, teachers... it's a huge range.

Ryan

liberal, crunchy, politically active, culturally and environmentally friendly

Lee

People think that everyone here SHOULD be a hippie or at least hippie-ish. They think there are no jocks and lots of stoners.
